pale blue, the duo of elizabeth wight and mike simonetti, released their debut album too much critical acclaim back in 2015. they come together once again with their latest ep you stopped dying due to drop on crosstown rebels in february. the you stopped dying ep takes influence from shoegaze groups like slowdive and my bloody valentine and moves it to the dance floor. the result is a strange hybrid that some have called technogaze. this would never work if liz wasnt such a strong vocalist. her amazing vocal range makes it easy. mike simonetti pale blue is a hypnotic affair, the driving bass sitting perfectly under wights powerful yet ethereal vocals. daughter of babylon takes the record into heavier techno territory with its thudding bass and wights breathy vocals delicately layered over the top. on the flip side love is an unapologetically industrial number with screeching synths that echo around wights vocals. simonetti and wight have each earned their musical stripes in their own rights. simonetti founded the hugely popular italians do it better as well as his own successful record label, 2mr. hes released a slew of records on highly regarded imprints such as me me me, correspondant and public release, and enjoys a fruitful career as a touring dj, which shows no sign of abating. wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the west coast band, silver hands of which she was once one half

manni dee might be best known for his upfront techno tackle on perc trax and the like, but he s also been quietly building up a separate identity as nuances, and it s a world away from his dancefloor output. following on from some choice album appearances on bastakiya tapes, it s up to tabernacle to give the project its first outing on wax. while tabernacle can have some range in their sound, this finds the label plunging wholeheartedly into ambient climes. heavily processed textures and delicate chimes all feed into a truly evocative atmosphere loaded with significance. ignore the familiar name behind the music - this is an album deserving attention all on its own.

swiss artist and veteran producer ripperton contacted the esp institute out of the blue mid-2017 to share a gorgeous mix of self-produced material, a collection of pieces made without any agenda outside of representing the self, not geared toward the dancefloor or a specific environment but simply a bi-product of introspective exploration. we were floored, the mix was on constant repeat in our world for weeks, then was subsequently pulled apart into separate titles to form this beautiful double lp, rippertons debut with the label. the title sight seeing speaks of someone stepping outside their current reality to look in the mirror, as if to ground themselves and keep sight of who they are in a world of extreme highs and lows. inspired greatly by expansive landscapes and views from airplane windows (imagine your commute flying over the alps every weekend), ripperton describes this collection as postcards to himself, messages from his subconscious recorded on tape (both conceptually and literally), melancholy soundtracks to the mondays that follow weekend journeys. while musical genres tend to cycle through bandwagon moments, the esp institute strives to operate independently of these, and while sight seeing is undoubtably an ambient album, were simply proud to revel in the chance moment where an esteemed artist such as ripperton spreads his wings in a beautifully unexpected mode of expression.

das selbstbetitelte album der avant-pop-musikerin sophia kennedy vom april vergangenen jahres auf dj kozes pampa label begeisterte fans und kritiker gleichermaßen. sophia kennedy gilt völlig zu recht als ausnahmekünstlerin in der zeitgenössischen musik aus deutschland. die symbiotische verbindung setzt sich nun mit der veröffentlichung einer neuen 10inch fort, inklusive zwei unveröffentlichten songs, auf der sich sophia weiterhin der handwerkskunst eines songwritings diesseits des mainstreams widmet. im zentrum von -being special- steht ein trio aus perkussivem piano-riff, streichern und handclaps, dass das herz mit der anmut eines großen cinematografischen gefühls wärmt. in kennedys version von -afraid- - einst von der all-time-underground-legende nico geschrieben - scheint eine spröde do-it-yourself-angelegenheit, doch der song entwickelt sich ausgeklügelt in kleinen schritten: sophias unverwechselbare stimme gewinnt an fülle und wird zeile für zeile dynamischer, wie sie durch wiegenlied-artige strophen schweift. -apple in the basket- schließlich ist das verschrobene schlussbild, verkörperung eines wirbelnden zirkuskarussells, das sich im verzerrenden glas eines spiegelkabinetts reflektiert und wo der ort, der eigentlich für den refrain reserviert war, der sich steigernden wiederkehr nun grotesk verzerrter orgeltöne überlassen wurde.

the solar phenomena label welcomes achim maerz for its fifth ep. the hamburg producer is an associate of labels like dont be afraid, where last year he released his mini-album of rough and ready house tracks that are improvised and innovative. the four cuts he serves up here are just as special and have an ethereal air to them.
in my house opens things up with serene synth work and lush detroit stylings. its a deep and widescreen track that encourages you to dream. fresh air is a little more upright, with rattling hits and pixelated, long tailed synths lingering above the rooted drums. as the title suggests, leaving this planet is a cosmic exploration, with ambient keys and meditative atmospheres joined by only the most subtle and suggestive sense of rhythm way down below. last of all is two times, a beautiful deep house track with deft synths drifting, bleeding and wandering off into a starry night sky. all in all, then, these are truly thoughtful house tracks.

martin kohlstedts zweites album nacht (2014) bezieht sich direkt auf den vorgänger und ist dennoch die verkehrung seiner perspektive nach innen. hat der komponist in tag (2012) noch verspielt fragen gestellt, folgen jetzt in aller konsequenz neun monologe. diese reduzierten stücke sprechen mit einer unterdrückten ruhelosigkeit, distanzieren sich aber vermehrt vom leichtfertigen. in ihnen arbeitet kohlstedt hart an sich selbst, repetition und rhythmische verwandlungen entwickeln eine nach innen gerichtete dynamik. aus dem entstehenden sog befreit sich die -nacht- immer wieder neu, selbst in ihren schwerfälligsten momenten. und unterbewusst möchte man daran glauben, sich festhalten an diesem gerüst, noch während es anschlag für anschlag konstruiert wird. ein ankommen ist für martin kohlstedt aber noch utopie, die nacht erzählt vom suchen nach einem passenden ort dafür. sie ist deswegen nicht immer leicht zugänglich vertraut sich aber ihren hörern bedingungslos an. persönlicher können moderne kompositionen nicht werden.

a modular synthesiser and an urge to find interesting tones, textures and timbres... ekke s second lp klangfarbenmodular is due to bevreleased by detroit underground . it is electronic music with compositions that deal with abstract textures, glitchy beats, nostalgic synth melodies, and sound design. like the title of the album suggests, one of the main interests for ekke has been finding different interesting tone-colours, textures and timbres. second very important inspiration for ekke while composing this material was his instrument modular synthesiser. he has been studying free improvisation and composition on that instrument for years and the instrument has become like a good friend and music teacher for him. the album was composed and recorded during 2015-2017. most of the material has been recorded as studio jam sessions. all the pieces have then gone through many reincarnations. although most of the material comes from machines, there is a track where all the sounds are field recordings registered in tallinn, estonia, which is a current home for ekke .

to differentiate between his solo dance-oriented work to the darker tones, kaczmarek aka paul ritch launched his new album titled iiiiiiiiiiiiii on october 30th on his fresh imprint kczmrk. kczmrk is definitely a more personal project for paul, helping him define a newly found darker and more genuine taste to produce electronic music, which would even the most demanding audience left surprised. kaczmareks immersive sounds on his debut album were highly supported by respected artists of the underground scene such as sterac, vril, lewis fautzi, vsk and djedjotronic, who will contribute reworks that will come out in a remix ep in february 2018. the 12inch is gently introduced with a sophisticated remix of iiiii by techno pioneer sterac aka steve rachmad, continuing with vrils remix of iiiiiiiiii who delivers beautiful ambient tones in a euphoric travel of sound. the b side begins with emerging talent lewis fautzi and his iiiis remix in a deep and hypnotic cut, followed by the curtesy of vsk and djedjotronics remixes of iiiiiiiii. vsk sticks to the dark and hard forms of techno with glimmer of deeper and industrial sounds while djedjotronic enrich kaczmareks dark techno tones with some futuristic idm.
