the second edition in our compilation series focused on regional producers quietly flourishing between the cracks of an increasingly complex online musical landscape. a shade under 30 minutes, the release features artists from malaysia, singapore, the philippines and indonesia, covering a diverse musical spectrum traversing hazy house, tropical electronica, fringe club and classical piano through to esoteric ambient.

originally released in 2015 on cassette by g.e.d. soul records. now for the first time on 1lp vinyl on kingunderground, remastered and limited to 500 copies. the album is a collection of delightfully smoked out, library inspired instrumentals. following in the footsteps of their highly enjoyable 2011 debut. “return of” combines many shades of many moods into a tight record that finds a nice balance between strange hype arrangements and super chill ‘couch-lock’ inducing slow jams. it embarks on a cinematic soul journey from the opening note, through the interlude, straight to the closing credits.

for our next excursion, we’re off to the library. in search of library records that is - you know the type, the crazy rare records used for soundtracks and such and such. we have a sick selection of synthed-up beats and pieces chopped together by one earl jeffers, making the most out of his international library digging card* (*not a real thing).
for those that don’t know, cardiff’s earl jeffers is one half of darkhouse family, regular family at our sister label, first word, on which they released their debut album “the offering” late last year. earl is a prolific producer in his own right, also releasing over the years under the aliases chesus and metabeats on labels like mcde, fat city and local talk, collaborating with artists like byron the aquarius, action bronson and kamaal williams / henry wu, turning his hand ably to house, hip hop, jungle, jazz and more. all this in addition to running his own label, mélange records.
a dedicated digger and record collector first and foremost, earl has provided us with a quadruple set of heavyweight stuttery sci-fi boom bap. in earl’s words: “this record was mostly inspired by my penchant for the more electronic / synthesized jams, mostly replayed from the original compositions then thrust in to 2028 and beyond….”

in the era of the brand, kutiman is an anomaly. a musician who’s a video artist who’s a producer who’s an animator who’s also the unwilling star of one of israel’s most successful recent documentaries, his every record contrasts with whatever it was that came before. but that’s fundamental to his appeal: no one, not even him, really knows what to expect next. unsurprisingly, therefore, ‘don’t hold onto the clouds’ is no different, which means it’s like nothing he’s ever done. most artists would acknowledge this by working under pseudonyms, but kutiman is – yes, you’ve guessed it – different again. “if i changed my name every time i wanted to do something new,” he laughs, “i think i’d have too many names!”

this collaboration between skatebård, philipp lauer & dj sotofett dives deep into flux borders of italo, new beat and the melodic sides of industrial. a-side is contoured by a synthetic bassline riff on trigged drums & percussions for a full club version. b-side’s two tracks are both differently bass driven, one with live piano solo and the other with airy whistles. all tracks cleverly composed with a richness of melody, rhythm & engaging arrangements.

peter kadergard has been active in the helsingborg (sweden) electronic music scene since the early 1990 s. he was involved in various collaborations during the 90 s and appeared on a few cassette releases under the names grodans fodelsedag, marchentraum and mannix system. peter released his first rittowski record on the borft sub label djuring phonogram in 2004. apart from this electro project peter is a member of the bands goz mongo alliance and inyurmania, who has made a few releases on the ufo mongo, pripuzzi and skiboy record labels. this is new electro!

no one confronts the abyss better than chris orrick. the michigan ex-factory worker formerly known as red pill has spent the last half-decade documenting industrial decay, familial pain, and struggles with addiction better than almost anyone inhabiting this poisoned soil. it’s somewhere between charles bukowski and michael moore, or maybe atmosphere if he couldn’t ignore the arsenic in the air. as orrick tells it, “portraits,” his latest album for mello music group is a return to form.

full disclosure...i changed the entire release schedule to jam this record in this year. when you listen, hopefully can see why. from getting the demos during my breakfast, the record was agreed and in the schedule by the time i’d finished my dinner. currently if you cut austin ato i believe he’ll bleed an amazing record. this record swings between a peak-time hands in the air pink loveheart vibe, hot and heavy classic sample based house, and some real basement orientated machine-made jacking house. its like a quadruple a side release, and i personally find it impossible to pick a favourite on here.

for the fourth installation on boogie box records, appleblim links up with the middle east crew to deliver one of two eps planned for 2018. first up. two original tracks by the bristolian artist, vurstep and dream wisdom. signature appleblim crossover sound, floating between bass, d&b, electronica and house influences, with early carl craig/psyche/bfc and 4 hero watching over. on the b side, vurstep gets a rework by shed and forest drive west. always on point, shed does what he does best. a grooving old school flavored bass and breakbeats remix. followed by forest drive west s stripped down, mind humping, feet tapping basement flavor.

following a standout appearance on dvs1’s mistress label with his “just pain” track, the man from minneapolis, doubt, returns to don’t be afraid for the first time since 2014’s “poor dog” ep. in the interim he has continued to record on disposable commodities under the doubt moniker, whilst also exploring experimental and ambient sound under the name time heals nothing.
for his most inclusive outing to date, doubt mines the outer limits of minimal house music whilst still maintaining the vibe of alienation and melancholy that characterises his work. the mood of “april” is euphoric and carefree but dig deeper and the fragile beauty also suggests an impending and ominous apocalypse. “what is happening” and “samusex” counterbalance the a-side’s brief suggestion of joy with a mood closer to doubt’s previous work. the title track meanwhile recalls the work of labels like ifach and trelik with a swinging, stripped down dub sound.

dauwd returns to technicolour with -theory of colours - versions- ep. a new 4-tracker ep containing remixes/reworks of various singles from his debut album. the ep opens with a piano rework of analogische memories , recoded at his studio in berlin and the result of countless hours work - -it took some time, as i had to learn to play piano- dauwd explains. dauwd also makes up one third of the berlin collective, party and radio show, african acid is the future having previously released on kompakt and ghostly international. ukrainian music producer and leleka label boss vakula provides a remix of macadam therapy . fresh from the release of his well received lp -metaphors- and following on from last years -techno game- released via arma and -cyclicality between procyon and gomeisa- released via dekmantel in 2016. aaitf partner romain azzaro aka rouge mécanique provides two remixes of murmure (one -walking-, the other -running-) - -romain and i returned to the studio where i made much of the album in utrecht in the netherlands. we got to experiment again with many of the wonderful machines they had there, in particular the original roland system 700-.

after the devotion trilogy, that kicked-off the label catalogue in 2017, sublunar cofounder sciahri is back on his own imprint with a brand new ep. following the recently released ep “demur” on manhigh, the record label by henning baer, metamorphosis is a focal point into sciahri’s musical journey, always searching for the perfect equilibrium between spacious, immersive sounds and complex structural dynamics.

echocord’s colour sub-label returns early june with a four- track ep from eindhoven’s albert van abbe in the shape of ‘klangbilder’. dutch techno artist albert van abbe has nearly two decades of experience under his belt in various forms of musical and visual expression, releasing on his own vanabbe imprint, figure jams, semantica and no comment, as well as playing live and djing at hot spots across the globe such as berghain, tresor, dgtl and awakenings festival. ‘klangbilder 1’ leads with a robust rhythmic drive, employing bumpy toms, shuffled hats and lumpy kicks at its core as vacillating synths, tension building drones and menacing pizzicato strings develop throughout. ‘klangbilder 2’ takes things deeper next, retaining the dusty drums sound of the previous cut whilst stirring in airy ethereal pads and choppy, resonant stab sequences. ‘klangbilder 3’ kicks off the b-side with modulating synth whirrs, emotive organ tones and a muted drum tones throughout before ‘klangbilder 4’ closes the package, taking things beatless and cinematic via emotive synth leads, droning subs and expansive echoes.

best effort records jumps out of the box with their inaugural release ’number one’ - a selection of tracks that celebrate friends making music together. cold emotion are danny wild and rory stenning. the duo explore improvised club music using various keyboards and modular synthesisers. “toast” is a track taken from an extensive live recording session from 2015. accidental cv messages create unexpected cyclic baseline patterns while keyboard melodies float freely above jacking modular beats. the result is an imperfect, inspired club jam ready for any occasion. -cantao- pitches things down from the hypnotic frenzy of -toast- to offer a unique hybrid between computerized dub, subaquatic g-funk and triphop ambiance. canadian content! -manipulate me- is a collaboration between ivy barkakati and phran. the stark, alienated quality of ivy s spoken vocals & dark subject matter sounds even more claustrophobic and sinister backed up by the duo s frigid machine-funk, which is more in the spirit austere & icy 80s coldwave than modern house music. metric systems are a duo from somewhere in australia. the fathoms-deep -adaptation dub”, recored in 2009, is reminiscent of australia s after-hour dub technicians sheriff lindo or andy rantzen. look out for a full lp later in the year

limited to 250 copies, next up in tartelet’s limited-edition series is renaissance man n.o.t.e. with “night frames” – a compilation of barrel-aged sounds for the warm nights ahead. n.o.t.e. is a new project by an already established artist who might be of swiss or italian origin, depending on who’s asking. a seasoned sailor of musical waters, he enjoys jazz piano, fine wine and silk linens. though none of that matters. the first release under his new name could be described as a mini concept album where different routes are explored, bringing n.o.t.e.’s musical diversity and capabilities to light. starting with “falsa laudis,” n.o.t.e. takes the listener back to the 80s with clear references to italian boogie and jazz-funk of that era. the track is warm, fat and sparkly, and best enjoyed with a cocktail in hand. following this is the title track “night frames” – a bruk-jazz escapade not shy of elaborate rhodes solos and filthy funk. the b-side opener moves further south: “obaleyako” is fueled by tropical energy, mixing african percussions with soft piano chords. it’s weird, mysterious and red hot! last but not least, n.o.t.e takes on the finest deep house sound with “en route,” where endless layered melodies and percussion form the farewell. this is an ultra limited-edition release of 250 copies (strictly no repress!), written and produced by n.o.t.e. and mixed at panalama studios in copenhagen on the neve 5088 shelford console for good measure. enjoy!

as non state’s inaugural release, the lake ep by jarvus is a textural exploration into unknown realms, with each passing movement painting imagery of coarse landscapes, from the rolling, insomniac daze of “rock pools”, filled with warm, bouncing bass sequences and synth-pad whirlwinds, to the submersible resonance of “lake mist”, projecting feelings of fragility and under-water claustrophobia as tribal-esque rhythms act as a calming mantra.
produced by processing all kinds of expressive sounds through various guitar pedals and using circuit bending or diy instruments, jarvus fuses downtempo-techno into atmospheric, mesmerising movements rather than folding into conventional structures.

after the celebrated metabolism lp from last year, sigha is back with an untitled 4-track cut for token84. after the celebrated metabolism lp from last year, sigha is back with a 4-track cut for token84. this untitled record remains understated, playing with variations on a theme whereby the similarities exist seemingly to illuminate the differences between the tracks. the relationship between circular and hum is reminiscent of sigha s 2016 new puritan flip on the earlier offering of puritan from 2012, with circular presenting a tight, meditative loop in high-mid frequencies while hum inhabits a similar space, only seemingly from a distance. if those two are close, measured and controlled, the other tracks on the record demonstrate more freedom and abandon. gliss is huge and heavy, while flare s sonic elements interact playfully and scatter as the piece progresses.

glitterbox resident dimitri from paris and remixing pioneer tom moulton present their retouched mixes of ron hall & the muthafunkaz modern day soul classic ‘the way you love me’ now available on 12” vinyl. initially released in 2006, marc evans provides velvet-smooth vocals complimented by background harmonies and timeless disco production. for his iconic t.s.o.p. remix dimitri from paris enlisted the help of salsoul orchestra founder vincent montana, jr. for fresh strings as well as a new full orchestra arrangement in his version, and here he gives it an update with his previously unreleased ‘dim’s t.s.o.p. version - dimitri from paris glitterbox retouch’. tom moulton’s retouched sweet-sounding ‘philly re-grooved remix’, previously released on harmless in 2013, comes laden with guitar riffs, dreamy harps and xylophone for even more instrumental glory. two disco legends come together under one stunningly soulful glitterbox release leasing new life into this timeless record.

after the release on french label basse resolution and after a couple of years since his last ep on bosconi, having released with the -under the line- track one of the highlights of our latest 10 years compilation and as bss together with his mates fabio della torre and mass prod, rufus is back on bosconi with a new four tracker record which goes on a new direction compared to the past music he did. -ritual chants- was mainly recorded in the abandoned industrial area of milan called bovisa and probably for this reason the release sounds all around a bit sci fi, cinematic and especially gothic. all begins with the raw techno jam of -fast rituals- where structured mellow and dreamy synth lines combine with the dusty, aggressive and driving rhythmical transportation of its drum section. fast rituals is one of those electronic pieces which tells you a story from the beginning till the end, so please pay attention to it. -sapere sparare- looks calmer but actually has the more mental and psychotic feeling of the whole record, driven by an intoxicating and fat bass line, rough jazzy beats and a lot of twisted out fm synths goodness whose times are punctuated twice by the warning female vocal theme of the track. -last shot #5- instead is a jacked out, hypnotic and darker broken house track dense of pumping low ends and subtle but glorious synth riffs properly made for the late hours and totally in the vein of a baby ford - minimal man production.-tenebre- closes up the ep with its horror movie atmosphere, drilling drones here and there, big bouncy bass lines, reverberated snares, drama strings and a dominant sinister melody which slightly reminds of some old dbx track.

songs about the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and the fate of war orphans, backed by grooves equally taking influence from arabic sounds, american funk as well as neighboring ethiopia. kamal keila was among the first artist we met in sudan during our two trips to khartoum and omdurman last year. he is one of the key figures of the sudanese jazz scene that was a vital part of the musical culture in sudan from the mid 1960s until the islamist revolution in the late 1980s. when we meet kamal he luckily presented us with two mold covered studio reels. each tape included five tracks. one with english lyrics and another with arabic ones. musically you can hear the influence of neighboring ethiopia much more than on other sudanese recordings of the time, as well as references to fela and american funk and soul. his lyrics, at least when he sings in english which gave him more freedom from censorship, are very political. a brave statement in the political climate of sudan of the last decades, preaching for the unity of sudan, peace between muslims and christians and singing the blues about the fate of war orphans called shmasha. a note inside one of the boxes specified the track titles, durations and the fact that the sessions were recorded on the 12th of august 1992. both sessions stand as a hearable testament how kamal keila stuck to a sound aesthetic from decades ago, while incorporating current events into his lyrics. kamal keilas album is the first in a series of releases covering the sudanese jazz scene on habibi funk. be on the lookout for albums by the scorpions and sharhabeel coming soon.

after two incredible eps, wayne snow the nigerian-born, berlin-based vocalist and songwriter now presents his debut album on tartelet records. freedom tv is the natural sequel to the max graef produced tasters red runner (2014) and rosie (2015) a project marinated in afro-caribbean, soulful grooves and topped by waynes effortless falsetto acrobatics. as the title suggests, freedom tv is an album with themes of liberty, struggle and creative identity pumping through its veins. within ten tracks, snow fluently meanders between musical styles: from low-tempo soothers like album opener cooler and fall to the syncopated bruk of the rhythm and cosmic funk escapades found on nothing wrong. production comes from three varied and solid sources. the tag-team between snow and fellow berliner, max graef

12 inch with printed full colour sleeve and obi general purpose brings you len’s latest offering, initials. an electronic experimentation in forward-thinking balearic music. originally written between 2014 and 2015, these discarded, lost ideas persisted enough to require further investigation. taking a pause between his dub explorations, initials is the result of this inquiry.

first lp by visballa (also part of atelier records adopo) is a long avaited lecture in real industrial funk. hard edged & rhythmical, but sometimes also as if recorded underwater or getting stuck in between two charging electrons. where some tracks bare the quality of dub rhythms others are fast forward 80s - and there s also the psychotic ones - either way it s 100% excellent.

loco dice has unveiled his darkly eclectic album ‘love letters, a 15-track embodiment of his diverse production range. featuring the latest single ‘were alive, the most highly anticipated record of his recent sets. dices third studio album after ‘7 dunham place and ‘underground sound suicide sees him reflecting on his musical influences and connections to dusseldorf and beyond. the album is packed with the producers typically forceful tones, which blur the lines between house and techno. utillising the bristling sounds and smooth drum beats, dices love letters album serves as an aural embodiment of the tones which make his sound so unique. throughout ‘love letters, dice uses his own vocals more frequently than on previous albums, which makes the production both trippier and more personal, representing past and present.

the second release on werk is signed by j. manuel. the young producer has been polishing his sound ever since he first started experimenting with electronic music gear as a child. his commitment to following his own instincts rather than conforming to what was being played around him resulted in a very different aesthetic to the one commonly associated with berlin techno. drive fiction ep stands proof of that. all 3 tracks push boundaries in their own style, that being perhaps the strongest link between them. the title track -drive fiction- presents old-school leads over broken beats and electro inspired pads while the a2 -falling in sine circulation- is arguably the most dance floor oriented track, with a pounding 4×4 kick drum and an alarming 3/4 sine wave slaying the high frequencies. closing the ep is b-side -softer-, a melodic track with long, undulating pads that is nonetheless driven by a powerful rave-inspired beat. with its second release, werk comes to confirm the path it seeks to travel through both parties and releases: that of the sounds less rigid. gritty, wild and presenting a wide range of rhythmic patterns, drive fiction ep is a defying record. challenge accepted?

rsn, producer, dj and musician from athens – greece, delivers his 4rth album named “strange eyes” which is his debut on agogo records. the album includes 13 songs influenced by electronica and trip hop sounds. hip hop beats with fat bass-lines in addition to effected melodic guitar, hammond and atmospheric analog synths create an ideal soundtrack for the album “strange eyes”. rsn collaborated with exceptional vocalists and musicians under his executive production.
from 2009 until now, he participates as a dj in the well-known british band belleruche, a world-class band in the turntable soul scene with many concerts in greece and abroad (serbia, turkey, russia, switzerland, france, england, ukraine etc.). all these years he has appeared in major festivals all over the world next to great names, such as the wailers, charles bradley, kid loco, zaz, waldeck a.o, while he has opened the live shows of top artists, including alpha blondy, wax tailor, dj krush, parov stellar and others.

“self fulfilling prophecy”, la fraicheur’s debut lp recorded between underground resistance studios in detroit and her home studio in berlin, will be released early this summer on infiné, in the middle of her international tour through europe and south america.

psychedlic electronica on this new fututibile release (sublabel from periodica). icio omeghas psyco cruise is a collection of songs and private recordings made between 1984 and 1991 in his studio on the island of stromboli. icio omegha, formerly known as maurizio aghemo, is a guitarist, a sitarist and keyboard player who was a member of a world music band active in the late 70s (uco, universal condition orchestra). maurizio today is a record collector and painter who runs his art gallery in stromboli where he exhibits his works. currently engaged in the assembly of a modular system, he continues to produce experimental music on the island. over the years, he has explored various musical genres, from ethnic music with an indian flavor, up to the typical electronic digressions of the mid 80s. the only available source of these recordings are original cassette tapes from which futuribile made this selection. a small selection with pieces that best describe his artistic career. the audio was cleaned, re-mastered and edited to make the best possible presentation of these unique recordings of icio omegha who is finaly able to share them with the public. recommended!!!

laura jones returns for another ep outing on her label. despite weighing in with an incendiary first release that found mandar s sam remixing infuse s karousel and a follow up from jones that included one of the sadly departed trevino s final remixes, the label took a backseat to the birth of her daugter in 2017. a year on however and the pace has picked up with an ep from renowned modular wizzard kamran sadeghi at the start of the year and this latest ep from the label boss. the two originals are a snapshot of her evolving style. pathway places skippy beats and sub heavy kicks under a soaring chord sequence, abstract vocal samples and ethereal pad riff. tough crowd takes a moodier approach with a menacing sub bass and drum arrangement, bubbling filters building to a hook that unfolds halfway through to create a moment of formidable intensity. lee renacre s recent revival of his 100 hz alias courtesy of well received outings on slow life and bosconi among others, has found the producer on career-best form and he turns in a sublime remix that makes deft use of delicate top lines and bubbling oscillators to create a powerfully heady atmosphere.
