frigio records is going back in time for its latest release, some 38 years into the past. back then a young newcastle man was experimenting with early electronic instruments and synths. mick clarke is his name and nearly forty years later he is still at it. two tracks have been borrowed from clarke s seminal games lp, each given a bit of modern boot polish from minimalrome s heinrich dressel and frigio father juanpablo.

-walls of the night- is a blissed out work of ambient prog rock abstraction. think rumbling horror score and soaring guitar strings. heinrich dressel offers a giallo dipped remix. the building bars of the original are maintained, beats added for ballast and darkened organ keys for a remake etched with murderous intent. the flip is introduced by the dreamy -time is now.- slender synthlines intertwine with gentle strings in a cerebral work. juanpablo tweaks the 1979 material. syrupy acid lines swim in meandering currents, a thick beat keeping time in murky waters of modulations and undulations.

dark entries present -a tape-, a double lpof early work by helena hauff, a dj and record producer based in hamburg, germany. at university she studied fine art, physics, and systematic music science. she previously was a resident at hamburg s golden pudel club, where she hosted a night called birds and other instruments. as a selector she weaves energetically between electro, new wave, and ebm. her music, often recorded live in one take, has a raw intensity to it. she debuted with an ep on werkdiscs back in 2013 followed by records for lux_rec and bunker sublabel panzerkreuz as well as two collaborative eps for pan, produced under the name black sites with fellow pudel resident f#x. ‘a tape’ is a compilation of helena’s earliest recordings from 2011 and 2014, originally released on limited cassette by handmade birds in 2015. clocking in at over 50 minutes, this collection spans hauff’s musical universe, from jacking acid-techno to krautish zone-outs and scuzzy feedback interludes. it’s tempting to consider it helena’s debut album, but she views these tracks as mostly forgotten sketches left on the cutting room floor. it a gripping collection of deep, sinister analog synth sequences, industrial dissonance, and heavy percussion. her equipment set up was a roland alpha juno 2, juno 60, tb-303, tr-707 and tr-808. both of the discs end with hauff stepping outside of the intentionally stiff, robotic rhythms, instead showing her skill at crafting less conventional electronic sounds. all songs have been mastered by james plotkin with vinyl eq and lacquer cut by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. the record is housed in a custom made jacket designed by eloise leigh, featuring a checkered graphic and black lines, highlighted by yellow and green for maximum visual tension. each copy includes a double-sided postcard with notes.

cadenzas head honcho luciano teams with house music legend david morales up for esperanza a long awaited release that will fire up the summertime. david and luciano composed the track together but then each one refined his own personal mix. lucianos flow latino mix is a long tribalistic ground moving crescendo with a sub-frequency dense kick and sparkling nuyorican flavoured percussions. the hand drums ensemble ride a magnetic bass provoking a state of hypermnesia slowly reaching a climax of celestial chords. this subtle spectral progression finally breaks down a feeling of positive trust and spiritual healing. david morales red zone mix is a lengthy dramatic ascension with a darker feeling. stretched textures are the background of a constellation of scattered percussions, over which fast paced hi-hats subliminally introduce evocative strings and arpeggios, as they were coming out, at last, as the hope from the pandoras box.

from time to time, you hear an ep and instantly can sense that it’s going to be significant. sad girl seasonal affective disorder does what few manage to do - it tells us not only a story from different perspectives but describes the journey of the heart and mind when losing someone we love - the conflicting emotions when we hurt and the evolution of emotions we experience as we heal. it achieves this by using a rich and diverse collection of sounds as its vocabulary, and a brilliant integration and structure as its grammar. also, this strategy manages to give each track its unique character, allowing them to stand on their own.

born roy samuel reid in saint thomas in 1944, i roy was one of jamaicas all-time greatest deejays. a natural-born toaster, his rhyming raps always sounded effortless, whether describing the harsh realities of the inner city, or making light of nonsense nursery rhymes. a former employee at customs and excise, he was first active on a sound system called soul bunnies in the rock steady era, moving to son’s junior in 1968, and later, to the legendary supreme ruler of sound, defecting to the rival stereo sound system after that. hits for harry mudie and other producers soon followed, and after the killer debut album presenting i roy impacted overseas, the toaster began spending frequent periods in london. his longstanding working relationship with hit-making producer bunny lee led to some of his most noteworthy albums during the mid 1970s, the 1977 set cant conquer rasta is a superb showcase-style album, on which the toaster blows hard lyrics over five of lees killer rockers rhythms (recorded with the likes of johnny clarke), each complete with a corresponding aggrovators dub on the flip, all mixed by prince jammy at king tubbys studio

tone depth has been making music for many years but he doesnt seem to get older...... he just gets better and better. this is his 2nd release on noir music and i can assure you there’s more to come in the near future. “escape” contains 3 instrumental and very intense tracks. they are all cleverly build for the underground floors. they each have their own special signature and carry that powerful tone depth production level. each track on this ep immediatley made me “escape” into the music, took me on a journey and captivated my attention throughout the running minutes of each piece. i have been playing these tracks since the day i received them track by track and they really do grow on you (play for play) like great music always tend to do.

adballons (made-up word from ”advertising balloon”) was a duo formed in tokyo and active only between 1986-88. equipped with some gear (casio cz-5000, teisco s-110f, roland mc-202, roland tr-909, korg kpr-77) and influenced by the music of d.a.f, kosmonautentraum, tommi stumpff, propaganda, the flowerpot men, cassandra complex, this heat, the pop group, spk and laibach, they released just one 7” in 1987 and played some shows in local clubs before disappear and become part of the obscure and inscrutable japanese underground scene. limited to 270 copies on 10” vinyl including the four original studio. everything remastered from the original reel-to-reel tape. each copy comes with a obi strip, an insert with some photos/lyrics/credits and a numbered card.

for lionoils 4th outing, formerly supine edinburgh top cat thinktank takes us on a dive around his subaquatic crib, drifting between its many chambers - each one stranger and more manic than the next.

a few years ago we received an anonymous email with a link to three tracks and a simple message: “hi, maybe you would be interested in this music.” it’s easy to be skeptical of yet another link from yet another artist in a world overcrowded with them, but listening is our job and so we do it. the songs were instantly striking: extraordinarily slow, somber, and spacious, each vaulted cathedral chord reverberating poetically into the distance, the melodies rolling out like fog across a cemetery. captivated, we requested more, receiving a single word in response: “yes.” then, nothing. eventually, three months later, we received another email with slightly more information: a name (irma orm), a location (stockholm), and a bit of context (she worked alone, and progress on music was slow but steady).
fast-forward to mid-2016: we’re informed the album is complete, and it is breathtaking. hermetic gothic swan songs conjured from funereal piano, twilit ambience, minimalist percussion, and spellbinding vocals. the mood is lulling and lush but lost in sorrow, stark grey structures looming in the night. majestic open spaces between notes heighten the melancholic grandeur of orm’s arrangements, blurring the line between lament and lullaby. the songs less end than ebb away, succumbing to their own downcast beauty.

favorite recordings proudly presents this new official reissue of arian: a rare and underrated disco album originally released in 1981 by pgp rtb label and fully recorded in new-york. arian kerliu was born in the small town of macedonia, dibra or debar. arian’s first recordings for a local radio stations were at the age of 14, appearing in almost every music festival in ex-yugoslavia. when he was 19, arian came to new york city, working different jobs and studying music. his first music engagements were in various clubs throughout the city, playing guitar and singing. he then met with james benjamin-fish, well known bass-guitar player, with whom he formed the band arian & funky family, mainly performing in the best clubs of nyc at that time. together, they came to an idea to record an album of their own. after travelling throughout the us, they got to know each other very well, and had connected with probably some of the best musicians you could find at that time. thus they had sinclair acey arranging three songs and hubert eaves, as a writer of -still together-, a beautiful ballad written in honor of his wife. by that time hubert had gained two grammy awards for stephanie mills’ albums. kornelius cambell also wrote and composed two songs of the album, which sinclair acey arranged. the album also contains a great cover of “can’t say goodbye” by bobby caldwell, a song that arian and james had interpreted almost every night when touring. and all of this completed with the background vocals of tawatha agee (mtume), shevill alexander and sybil thomas (raw silk). arian & funky family band was then invited in yugoslavia for a european tour, including james, kornelius and stacey, but also others great musicians such as william -spaceman- patterson, zane mark, steve kroon, trevor gale, alex foster, or reggie marks, not forgetting flame braithwaite and meli sa morgan on background vocals. having the material of the 4 songs ready and finalized, the pgp rtb label from belgrade offered them to release an album, with the idea to also adapt the songs with lyrics from the famous croatian musician and writer mario mihaljevic. today, favorite recordings is deeply honored to bring this brilliant lp back to life. in order to insure the best sound quality, the original tracklist has been dispatched on a double vinyl version, which should please all djs and music collectors

dub-stuy links bukkha with uk grime stalwart killa p for a dark, sound killing anthem. dub-stuy expands on their vision for 21st century sound system music with a new 12inch that brings together resident producer bukkha and one of grimes most recognisable voices, killa p . the result is a deadly cut that takes no prisoners and is backed by an equally heavy instrumental. death chat is arguably one of dub-stuys most ambitious collaborations to date. bukkha crafts a dub meets grime riddim that builds from filtered keys into a ten-ton heavy monster. killa p, who has collaborated with the bug and is fresh from a turn on sir spyros topper top, delivers cutting lyrics in his instantly recognizable patois-inflected style, with each bar building tension toward a sonic climax. backing up this dancefloor sureshot is ‘ethiopian dub’, an instrumental that samples its vocal and melodic hook from an obscure dubplate and whirls both around a steady beat and bass line solid enough to punch through walls. with this latest 12inch for dub-stuy, bukkha shows his versatility and delivers an anthem that no sound can test.

mood 24 returns with the mood series various artists. for this installment we have 4 special tracks each one to suit different styles and tastes. first up we have nima gorji with his contraction track. a groovy minimal track, repetitive but at same time brings you along through a little journey on the dance floor. dragutesku gives us a deep and dark track with special little sounds here and there to bring suspense and anticipation to this wicked track. negru has a more solid house style. 808 drums, sick sub bass and a jazz melodies. petar cvetkovic gives us some more tech house orientated sounds, simplistic drums, groovy rolling percs and a sick vox to wrap things up nicely.

pfirter and his label mindtrip are highly respected in the world of techno. being the main vessel for his own productions, it has also featured music and remixes by producers such as chris liebing, lucy, markus suckut, oscar mulero and developer, whilst also looking to support and break new artists. the fifteenth vinyl release is in charge of italian talent diego amura who makes his mindtrip debut following releases on the likes of arts, planet rhythm and konsequent. having played alongside leading djs such as ben klock, marcel dettmann, rødhåd, sleeparchive and dax j, his reputation is growing substantially with each gig and release. diego’s original tracks on the automa ep incorporate a raw, analogue aesthetic, with a nod to the old school. straight up jams ready for any dancefloor, they also have a feeling of menace and purpose from the twisted melodies. jonas kopp supplies the sole remix, who to many should need no introduction following his influential releases on tresor, polegroup, ilian tape, clr and many more. his rework concentrates on a more hypnotic flow, instilled with sparks of energy, funk and deep textures. this is mindtrip!
