if osiris recent releases have signalled a change of pace, new artist the things they left behind represents the logical conclusion with this 12 inch comprised of two half-time, dubby tracks. the first, life through sepia, floats along to the ethereal backdrop of spoken word samples and distinctively melodic synths, the second, 68, sets a hazier and more abstract tone amidst on top of a sensual, rolling groove distant guitars ring as huge snares echo into the mist.

emerging through storm-like waves of distortion, opener ‘alpha’ sets the scene for this beguiling cassette release, with melodies rising out of — and then descending back into — the chaos. ‘3000 years’ takes vocal samples as a starting point, before melting into layer upon layer of delay, after which ‘confounded’ picks up the pace with its heavily distorted beats and the side then closes to the sound of a distant choir burning in acidic ambience in the shape of ‘fruitless clicking’. the nightmarish, malfunctioning machinery vibes continue onto the second side, with the more dance oor-friendly ‘strange conversations’ and ‘the brink’ bookended by the two-part ambient epic ‘pale blue dot’. dark, glitchy, and at times outright uncomfortable — perfectly suited to the cassette format.

celebrating osiris’ 50th release in two parts, label head simon shreeve unveils ‘deep summer’ as the first: a downtempo, vocal-led track with a pace and laid-back vibe not usually associated with his mønic alias. on the b side, a remix from none other than burial offers a distinctly smokier take on the track, full of percussive melodies that weave into surprisingly major-chord territory towards the end of the song’s ten minutes. this is a release that sees both artists pushing their respective music’s preconceptions.

emerging from what sounds like the unknown depths of outer space, new artist icore drops a debut ep on osiris music uk lled with ve exercises in hypnotic, polyrhythmic tension. the a-side’s two tracks ’sigil’ and ‘status field’ feel like two parts of a whole, each establishing a minimal, kick-heavy march in 6/8 that would perfectly ll the cavernous hull of an abandoned mining vessel, lurching through empty parts of the galaxy to the sound of ominous drones and malfunctioning, high-end bleeps. the b-side is more cinematic in its scope, with opener ‘substance from shadow’ summoning a distinctly b-movie vibe in its melody, before both ‘claimed by night’ and ‘axiom’ retreat into darker, more ambient territory, the former thick in sub- bass kicks, the latter ramping up the dread with unnerving repetition.

osiris music uk number thirty nine sees label owner simon shreeve finally come to the fore with the first full solo release under his mønic alias after a pair of successful outings on the open water and habits eps earlier this year. from the breathless opening charge of bloodhound to the tense recesses of the title track which closes the ep, human pattern sees mønic confidently steer both his personal sound and the overall aesthetic of the osiris label deeper into the realm of experimental electronic music. human pattern comes housed in high quality 300 gram outer and inner sleeves, fully printed and adorned with artwork making this a special piece even by osiris usual standards. early support: surgeon, regis, clouds, laurent garnier, amit, paul mac & lakker...

picking up where open water versions left off, the habits versions ep is another techno inflected project which again allows a cross section of the osiris roster to leave their own stamp on one piece of anonymous source material. leading the charge on habits versions is the second appearance from mønic whose tense, breakneck offering is the perfect complement to oscar muleros spacious interpretation, arguably the most dancefloor orientated of the release. the second half of the ep sees a heavyweight pairing of the seemingly inexhaustible killawatt and the lithe, forceful sound of amorce on their debut appearance on the osiris roster.

hand stamped and numbered, strictly limited to 320 copies. osiris music uks thirty seventh release *open water versions* sees the label taking an innovative, almost open-source approach to what could be a more conventional remix project, with four artists contributing their own unique perspectives to one anonymous track. the eps opening salvo comes courtesy of killawatt, who brings a dense combination of driving force and technical intricacy whilst ipman imbues his version with urgent percussion and sense of cavernous tension. the second half of the release sees the debut of osiris music label owner simon shreeves mønic project, the pummelling, cinematic sounds of which providing apt counterpoint to the staggered, churning techno of metrists version which rounds up the ep. early support from laurent garnier, eomac, bas mooy and paul mac.

following on from killawatts bring down the walls ep at the tail end of last year osiris music continues to expand their sonic boundaries as they move in 2014, with their first release of the year coming in the form of sleepers simulation theory ep. experimenting for the very first time with fm synthesis, the ep features seven tracks of thunderous production the majority of sounds for which sleeper drew from a mere four oscillators in a bid to recalibrate his production skills. the resulting record is far more than the sum of its component parts and, save for the skulking, static soaked tension of meth, moves with relentless force and purpose throughout.the simulation theory ep sees sleeper taking his already deft grasp of both dubstep and techno production and fusing them to a body of pummelling forward momentum perfectly suited to set osiris music off on what promises to be a bold and progressive year.

silver & black marbled vinylin a convergence of osiris musics heavyweights, kryptic minds and sleeper have built their first full collaborative release together, the pulsating peak-time pressure of axis shift backed with the heaving sub-frequency movements of solarized formation. both tracks hit brutally hard and low in the dance, featuring palettes of nightmarish industrial sounds laid over intricate techno / dubstep fused rhythms. axis shift is an amalgamation of flecked reese synths, paranoid atmospheres and plunging basslines that anchor the track deep beneath disorienting arrays of taut percussion. it is brisk, fluid flow is contrasted by the experimental rhythmic arrangements of solarized formation on the flip, centred around pounding kick drum trios, toughened slabs of sub-bass and minimal drum incisions, a unique and highly creative piece 140bpm music to bang soundsystems differently.

ipman has established himself as a force to be reckoned with over the last couple of years, bringing a lethal combination of unfaltering creative freshness and no-nonsense soundsystem pressure to the table. his music is held in high regard by kryptic minds, and this august sees them welcome ipman to the osiris music uk crew to drop two blackened cuts of bruising tech-edged weaponry for the imprint’s 32nd release. the results are unreservedly dark and punishing, with ‘persistent dread’ driven by hypnotising sub bass body-blows that punch beneath a jagged swell of menacing sound design and mazing glitch melodies. the flip features the fierce rolling beats of ‘signal motion’, a lurching stomper that hits hard with chest-caving intent, deft snarls of mechanised snyths and titanium-grade kicks accent waves of deep dread frequency. a monstrous debut osiris 12” from ipman, as both label and artist continue to make serious moves in 2013.

part 2 concludes killawatts largest body of music to date, the opposing rhetoric ep, a 6 track opus of truly progressive uk underground sound that melds his influences from dubstep and techno with expansive, high-tension sound design. the eps second triplet of beats feature his most overtly techno-focussed sounds yet, expanding his horizons and dropping the pace down to 125bpm, and delivers punishing dancefloor rigidity and bass-immersed sonic force. on black air, killawatt threads tightly coiled syncopations above a grinding 4×4 structure, and delivers a near-cacophonic but ultimately heavy full-sensory overload. the flipside is divided between the churning swell of dark industrial aesthetics on art of discourse, and the moody permutations of reactive technique, where rippling melodic shimmers provide accentuation to its pounding sub-density.
