walter gibbons, a true master of the mix, a disco legend, a pioneer of dance music. theres literally very few who can lay claim to progressing the artform of studio mixing and technique than the late gibbons. his contribution to contemporary music cannot be understated, first as a dj where his drum laced experimentation captured the ears and minds of his peers and the dancers, then later as a mixer and studio genius where he continued on his quest. often fixated on the percussion and breaks within records his versions would often dive into spaced out, dubby and stripped back territory that very few of his peers were even contemplating at that time, fervently reconstructing the tracks themselves and often the time, space and dancefloor within which the record was being played. a true original, gibbons was behind many of the definitive versions of the classics, his unique style often catapulting records that were just fine in their original form into brand new colourful, cosmic interpretations that flourished sonically and rhythmically with brand new sounds that bristled with vision.

ryo murakami is based on osaka entered the world of music playing piano at an early age, then was devoted to synthesizers and drum machines. his productions contain alternative dance music and classical contemporary music, a combination of atmospheric ambient, noise and drone. his production history had been varied up until his album released on his own imprint depth of decay in 2013 since between releases on bug’s poker flat, the dessous label and the more recent releases on german outlets baud and styrax.

this single is very special for visions recordings as we see a fresh collaboration between alex attias and luman child, two swiss artists reunited for the first time.alex proposed luman child a collaboration after listening to his music. then they met and talked about music , visions, influences, method of work and decided straight away to work together without knowing each other well and pushing them outside their comfort zone. they are both very happy with the resultjalex attias has been in the music for many years producing, remixing many great artists and djing all over the world. at the moment alex is about to release a compilation on bbe records ( lillygood party !) , plus a couple of remixes are on the way and he s also preparing other singles for his label visions .luman child produced in 2017 a killer first album with german label solid ground still available on a neo soul hip hop tip. he reached number 11 in the uk soul charts. as a musician and bass player luman child had a few collaborations with ferry ultra, gogo music and marc mac 4 hero.the project they present here is very organic soulful and musical. this single hold two killer tunes for the listener and the dancers.the a side is a 125 bpm disco jazz funk killer jam with live bass, fender rhodes and vintage keyboards sounds driven by a very funky drum beat and live basseline aimed to the dancefloor and good time party people keeping a smile on your face. its simply groovy and goes on and on for 10 minutes of pure disco pleasure.the b side is a funky number boogie jazz funk inspired by mr ayers vibes and sounds . the rhythm is groovy at 120 bpm and the moog bassline is round and fat. accompanied both track by fender rhodes and dope keyboards sounds, this one will definitely find place in dj boxes for those who play and love soulful music with an open mind. groovy , warm and soulful at his best.

a year after his debut outing on the label, max essa makes a welcome return to hell yeah with the han zon roc ep, which is another of his impossibly laidback offerings. essa is of course the long time uk talent who has become a part of the balearic mafia thanks to releases on labels like aficionado, music for dreams, and his own jansen jardin. this is the second coming together of artist and label and is another timeless excursion far out to sea. opener han zon roc (midori coup) is an epic 12inch minute adventure that slowly awakens your spirit with new age guitar plucks and heavenly ambience before organic drums slowly being to drift into earshot. they grow ever larger as synths start to spray about the mix, hand drums pitter patter and big chords bring the soul-shine. its like the soundtrack to an afternoon boat party all condensed into one brilliant cut. how you showed me everything then gets super chill with lazy drum tumbles, bendy guitar lines and scattered hits. withering cosmic chords colour the airwaves and its a track that will slow your heartbeat to nothing. last of all, rain birds alfalfa jam is a analogue drum work out with early 90s hip hop influences and diving basslines. it s light and airy, nimble and playful and of course filled with the sort of tropical rays that make all of essa works so brilliantly escapist.

long-serving us house champ dj dan dropped an absolute bombshell when his slammin trax vol.1 ep landed earlier this year, and now the veteran big room party starter is back with another clutch of tracks on his peerless instereo label. alongside fleetwood smack he drops the crazily funky vocal jam do 2 u, while his remix of conga squads live at k-market- brings a little fidget-esque hype into the mix. the b-side kicks off with jarred gallos feisty roller peep the technique, and then it s back over to dan in partnership with mike balance for the raw, jacking overworked.

us garage doesnt get more bumping than this of course its plastik people flying the flag for the evergreen sound where swing is king and a diva vocal is more than welcome. soledrifter wastes no time in diving into the funky house mindset on this various artists 12inch, keeping things heady and tracky where it counts before snazzy trax brings in a cheeky twist on a bona fide garage classic, now called the experience. joe olindo shines bright with the sexy, sharply pointed how i knew, and then lombard street takes things smoother on closing track whats wrong.

in 1989, an italo-house act sueño latino released a self titled track, which went on to become one of the most revered electronic music records of all time. louis botella is now set to release a sensational remake on emerald city this september. the track itself samples part of manuel göttsching’s influential e2-e4, an album known for its role in the development of house and techno. fast forward to 2018 and the record is again set to be revived thanks to louis botella, and with the blessing and support of göttsching and expanded music. on his interpretation of the track, louis has stayed true to the original, replaying each part and adding an extra dimension to the tracks through a sparkling piano topline, a new vocal hook and dreamy arpeggiations. louis’ passion for the art of djing was sparked from a young age. at sixteen he got his first gig at a club in luxemburg and released his first record in 1998. since then, he’s released on respected labels such as classic music company, ovum records and poker flat recordings.

grime originators macabre unit return to the nomine sound imprint with 2 absolute grime belters. the originals were released on nomine sound in 2017 and if you are familiar with them then these vips will not disappoint.

following sterling entries from derek carr, john shima and mihail p, distant worlds reaches out to perseus traxx for a demonstration of the emotional heft and utopian optimism that classic techno promises in its most compelling moments. this is relatable, familiar territory, but executed with finesse beyond the reach of the average producer. a new mystery is bathed in swirling synth tones as elegant as they are moving, while simulacra places a bold square wave riff front and centre for an impactful deep techno meditation. circumstantial reframes the same rich melodic approach in a frantic chassis of snapping beats darting around the grid with playful glee, and then the map is not the territory applies the same logic to a mystical but rhythmically charged trip into the netherworld of machine soul.

brendon moeller offers up his set in motion ep on echocord sub-label echo echo this september, comprising three originals from the dub techno veteran. south africa, new york based producer and dj brendon moeller aka beat pharmacy/echologist has long been respected as one of the pioneering figures in ethereal, dubbed-out techno with regular appearances at global hot spots like fabric, berghain and cielo as well as releases on labels like third ear, kimochi, neovinyl and echocord. here though we see moeller joining the roster of the latter’s sublabel echo echo, marking its fourth release. title-track set in motion leads with brendons signature murky synth textures at its core whilst lumpy low-end tones, shuffled hats and spiraling dub echoes fluidly undulate amongst one another throughout. eastern beach follows, and as the name would suggest, nods towards brighter sounds with airy pads, soft bell chime synths and pulsating subs driving the composition alongside swinging, heavily reverberated percussion. economy then closes the package, stripping things back to gritty dub stabs, dusty 4/4 drums and billowing noise sweeps.

my favorite robots next release is a very special remix by dj tennis. it initially comes as a 10 white vinyl and will then be available digitally in autumn. mfrs ‘barricade was first released on dj tenniss life and death label back in 2012. it was a huge house track that resonates to this day, so it makes sense the taste- making italian steps up to remix it. he is someone with a cultured take on brooding house and techno, as evidenced by the music he a&rs for his label as well as things like his own standout dj-kicks mix from last year. his new remix is a masterfully melancholic one that starts with a delicate ambient synth line hanging in mid air. breathy vocals eventually arrive to send shivers down the spine and finally, deep, rolling, mid tempo kicks bring a groove that carries you away into a reverie. its made all the more mournful and poignant thanks to some broad synth chords and swirling pads later on and is sure to provide a real centre point of any seriously emotional set. this is a stunning and absorbing single and another high point for my favorite robot records.

recorded in denmark in 1986 by the then up and coming afro pop singer kojo antwi from ghana, the tunes were issued in limited numbers as he was leaving denmark, sparking his international solo career after he left the classique vibes. though a popular favourite on cassette in ghana his debut album was only released in small numbers in europe and never achieved the same attention. the tracks selected here showcases kojos transition from the highlife sound of the classique vibes to the more drum machine driven highlife disco on ‘hini mi as well as the deep, computerized reggae

ghost in the machine return to perc trax to follow up their break out one louder ep that came out on the label last summer. since then they ve been focusing on their own genosha basic label, touring to great acclaim around europe and remixing perc & truss’ “leather & lace”, turning an already large track into a peak-time festival munching bomb. across the four tracks on their king dead they widen their sound, floating synth arpeggios over their trademark rock solid kicks and adding a deeper level of ambience that lurks with intent underneath their driving percussive sound.

universal cave unleash the 10th release in their catalogue with the universal cave wizards and dynamic duo superprince sharing the re-edit duties. universal cave provide the goods for the a side firing off a percussion heavy, latin flavoured bomb in lambada - just wait for those epic fills, sure to whip any crowd into raptures. take your time (universal cave s 909 rubdown) then lays up a hip house vocal flavoured, 909 enhanced 80 s bomb. flip it over and superprince take the reigns with your kind of love - funked up disco goodness, reworked with an extra helping of devilshness. the last slice of gold, hang high takes the tempo down to a string swelling, souped up, cosmic swagger. two sides, two artists but four entrancing edits to add to the universal cave repertoire.

next up on duskys renowned 17 steps label is the return of long term pal kiwi. having supported the lads on 9 of the 17 steps tour dates and having also provided the 15th release in the label catalogue - the fellow londoner now readies his oooh ep which comes backed up with a remix from feel my bicep affiliate hammer. kiwis sound is one defined by positive, kinetic feeling joining the dots between detroit techno, soul and balearic. with previous releases on futureboogie, life and death and moscomans lauded disco halal imprint, hes garnered several accolades including reaching number #85 in mixmag s top 100 tunes of 2017 and sitting at #1 in the genre chart for a total of 9 weeks with his orca ep back in 2016. now continuing on his ascent, kiwi lays out a pair of rapturous, gooey house jams that lands right on time for the festival season. on oooh vocal lines swirl over a largely beatless backing track. a rich, balmy feeling unfolds behind synth chimes and layered delays which work together to form an irresistible summer dj tool. andromeda then follows up and blends 80’s soundtrack-tinged stabs with crispy drums and thick sub bass before being accompanied by a pulsating synth line that carries the track to a delectable crescendo. hammer then closes things up with a somewhat hallucinogenic take on oooh with lfos, analogue sweeps and blobs of acid bleeding together to cap off an altogether warm and woozy trip.

i like to move it, go on move and can you feel it had already established erick morillo and the mad stuntman as one of the biggest new acts in 1994 - and then came raise your hands . originally starting life as asuca by r.a.w. (another morillo alias on the legendary strictly rhythm label), the addition of the mad stuntman s unmistakable vocals helped give them their 4th top 15 hit of the year. the update comes courtesy of uk producer shadow child, no stranger to chart success himself. -i couldn t wait to get my hands on this one,- added shadow child, who also debuts his acidub edit as part of the record s release. -that infectious riff has been going round in my head since i originally heard it and it is such a honour to get to make 2 versions!-

london s release/sustain imprint returns this may with the a says hello ep from detroit s alton miller, chaos in the cbd step in on remix duties. detroit s alton miller has been in the game for the past three decades coming up alongside luminaries derrick may, chez damier and the late frankie knuckles and releasing material on the likes of peacefrog, moodymann s mahogany music, theo parrish sound signature and clone amongst others. suffice to say, miller stands as an extremely important figure in the history of authentic, soul-drenched house music. title-track a says hello opens the package and as expected we re treated to an elegant slice of house infused with a flawless musicality as multi-layered synth chords, pads and swells intertwine alongside dusty drum samples. cool but so... follows, embracing an acid-jazz feel with broken, organic rhythms, sweeping pads and warm chord progressions throughout. mule musiq artists chaos in the cbd step up to rework cool but so... next, adding their own spin to things via warbling rhodes licks, bright chord sequences, a wandering bass line and an insistent organic drum groove. below the underdog then rounds out the package perfectly with gritty bass hits, tension building synth swells and a rugged, bumpy drum groove.

the masterful trio of timo mass, basti grub and eric volta showcase their combined musical muscle on the latest release forthcoming on supreme berlin imprint, mobilee. with an impressive remix package featuring rodriguez jr. and tiefschwarz. over two years in the making, ‚we were riding high‘ is a lucid after-hours track with an uplifting and catchy vocal hook that unfolds and develops fluidly. the alternative edit utilises dark synths and drums, retaining the positivity that make this track perfect for the last summer month. this record is the result of eric volta making the demo at an after-party at his studio. he then showed this to timo mass who in turn showed it to basti grub who loved the track so much, they were inspired to develop it. two time grammy nominated timo maas has an extensive musical background, spanning over thirty years. he’s worked with some of the world’s biggest stars including madonna, depeche mode and fatboy slim. basti grub heads up his own label, höhenregler, and is known for his exotic, african-influenced productions. he’s released on some premium labels including cocoon, get physical, desolate and cr2. born in london but very well traveled, eric volta shot into the spotlight with love your illusion and since releases on dirtybird, visionquest, four:twenty recordings among others.

the heavy pulse of sound systems synchronizes with the precision of musique concrète and the reconstructed memory of a masked folk dance of the swiss mountains. techno, drum n bass and dub are echoed within this sonic processional, where samples are pulled apart and recycled, cut at the beginning and end, then linked together.
tresque takes his name from an open-chain circle dance from medieval southern europe. under the musical moniker d’incise he has played on numerous solo and collaborative projects with cyril bondi, designing quiet, intensive listening experiences with various combinations of software, recordings from vinyl or in the field, modified objects, percussion and harmonium. as tresque the delicate minimalism he’s known for takes shape within driving grooves. airy, spacious, amplified noise from his collection of samples is sliced and tethered to weightier, physical beats. a tension forms between uplift and downfall, hypnotically oscillating between structural textures and collective dance.

monsieur-du-jour, chevals, graces us with his presence for an ep of exquisitely produced edits. la bouteille opens things up with a rhythmic workout combined with filtered melodies that erupt into a summery piano driven jam. under your command then comes in with the classic golden era disco feel, tied together with a shuffling beat. flip it over and fairy tales takes you into 80s boogie territory with those squelchy synths & irresistible vocals. closing out the ep chevals brings out the peak time, slap bass, disco stomper in croisades, complete with sultry sax licks, sure to do damage to any dancefloor its set before.

that summer i developed somewhat of an obsession with tonto’s expanding head band after having seen them perform at the big chill festival that year. the music blew my mind. later upon my return to civilisation and the ensuing research which then began in earnest i became as much blown away by the enormous t.o.n.t.o. (the original new timbral orchestra) modular synthesizer that had created the music as i was by the music itself. built in the early 70s, it s still the largest synthesizer around today. with the live show still resonating in my head i tracked down everything tonto had ever recorded. one of these tracks was an obscure outtake from the time t.o.n.t.o.’s creators, malcolm cecil and robert margouleff, were producing and engineering for stevie wonder in the ‘70s(https://youtu.be/wuaszff7yq0). the track, bittersweet, only ever appeared on a highly limited self-released cd put together to coincide with their appearance at the big chill. consequently i featured it on a few mixes i did over the years and invariably i’d be asked “what’s that track?” by those with an ear for something unique. and invariably these same people, many of them djs, would turn away disgruntled when i informed them it was cd only. although i didn t know it at the time, the seed was definitely sown for this vinyl compilation that you now hold in your hands.

4th tilly jam with four deep disco / house slammer
folks, here is tilly jam number four, served by till von sein with a striking can’t stop, won’t stop attitude. as if the first three fourtrackers were just heating things up, he’s firing out another ensemble of four to bring serious exercise to the floor. “say say say”, the opening title track of this ep checks many trademarks its originator is known and praised for. an explicitly soulful affair, even flexing some g-funk muscles here and there. crackling vinyl noise in the background, warm and thick bass footing, a bassline doing the filterhouse-routine and a sample heavy arrangement that even gets a boost-up after half of its running time. then there is “shadrach”. go do some exegesis if interested where that name stems from. we can assure you, this jazz-infused build-up including nervous hi-hat patterns, a boldly bass groove, a frenzy drum-solo, inciting chants and a horn section scaling things up, stems directly from peaktime heaven. and on b1, “impala” is taking up the thread of this rather outgoing vibe, tvs is going for with this set of tunes. find an energetic beat providing the ground work for filtered adlibs that kinda nail what comes to mind when this track gets mixed in. “whoo-hoo-hoo” – that’s right. just add some subtle percussive lining and let a saxophone take over and you’ll have another trigger for floor-ecstasy at hand. cooling things off a little bit it’s “baden powell dr” as closing cut. tilly is winding up the melancholy-meter on this one, reversing elements and by adding pianochords and synth-pads, infusing an overall mood of wind-whistling summertime-sadness

echodroides is a collaboration between chicago natives frank de la mora & miguel martin. their sound can be described as a trip through space with analog synthesizers and drum machines. they came together in 2011 first working on remixes then shortly after decided to work on original material. their music has been featured in tv shows, movies, promotional videos from peugeot, fashion labels and the ubisoft video game, watch dogs. for this special and limited release they re-created a track from 80s us studio project, experimental products, - paying tribute to -glowing in the dark- original and an instrumental. (words from the artists) experimental products has always been a massive influence on us from the very 1st time we heard them back in the 80s. glowing in the dark, in particular changed everything for us. mark wilde and michael gross were way ahead of their time. we wanted to pay tribute to them by re-creating this song from scratch.

after being one of the many standouts on the we are opilec…! vol. iii compilation back in 2016, i-robots glamouflage is now getting a full vinyl release with artwork by tomozo kevorkian, who was designer for nyc s body & soul, and remixes by a standout team of producers from japan to switzerland to south africa and the usa. opening up the ep is a fantastic new take ii version from label boss i-robots, who added exclusive chinese vocal samples recorded on the streets of huang jiang city many years ago. the track is inspired by ennio morricone and supermax and is a loose and infectious groove with brilliant drums and percussion and an elastic bassline that really gets you moving. it s a subtle update to the original—also included here as a bonus cut—which itself is a steamy and tropical sounding groove. swiss electronic pioneer schaltkreis wassermann then features on a version of the original that reaches for the cosmos with its rugged bass riffs, tumbling toms and busy, ever evolving groove. it has a big breakdown with exotic synths wandering through the night and oodles of effects and big guitar licks. the first of the remixes comes from kuniyuki takahashi who has been a big supporter of i-robots since 2000. he is a sound designer from japan who had a compilation of his works put out by music from memory back in february. his version is laden with cosmic synths and chants, grunting and organic drums and is sure to be massive this summer thanks to its open air vibes. detroit s underrated but vital gary martin is the boss of the teknotika label and his version featuring colten decker playing an unusual sax line shows another side to the motor city. it s a curious and mysterious tune that makes for an unsettling atmosphere that keeps you locked throughout as it snakes along.

some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as dub surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. the lost future was recorded at the former amsterdam film academy where dub surgeon. the recording engineer for the project was ricardo villalobos. dub surgeon and ricardo villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. the master copy was thought to have been lost forever. dub surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two eps on future dub in 2002/3. but one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of the lost future. pay attention to this, it said. attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on dubais ark to ashes, which is named in homage to the story of lee scratch perry burning down his black ark studio to rid it of demons. sounding as fresh as ever, the lost future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

for those that knoe delves deeper into the archives once more to repackage a bundle of hard to find cuts on vinyl that have been staple supplies in ben s record bag over the years. the early to mid 2000s was a period of minimal techno overload, finding quality house music then was a challenge compared to today. rather than follow the herd, some european producers took influence from the original minimal pioneers and fused those approaches with house music themes in order to push a unique sound of the era. they turned minimal on its head and gave took it in a different direction. canson from switzerland released a handful of records between 2002 and 2005 that were a prime example of this aesthetic. stripped back beats with syncopated melodies - perfect cuts for those early sets or hazy morning sessions. the three tracks featured on this compilation were originally released on two solo eps for canson: itsudemo and holiday plug in, both of which have claimed squatter s rights in my record bag for almost 15 years. i don t think i ve played one early slot or house set without one of them. this record is quite a personal one for me as it s a representation of my deeper sound as a dj. now the original records are a little hard to find so im so glad to share my choice picks of cansons material on a my label.

“great many arrows” is the 6th studio album from damien dubrovnik, the danish duo of loke rahbek and christian stadsgaard. it is also the 200th release on their posh isolation label, marking 8 years for both the label and project. the label’s inception came with damien dubrovnik’s debut album, and since then the two have been inseparable. without damien dubrovnik there would most likely have been no posh isolation, and vice versa.
