having been on something of a hiatus following the birth of his kids, milton jackson is back and in best form ever on songs without words. his most recent releases have been on uk label tsuba and is responsible for remixes for recloose on planet e, al kent, and m a n i k. kito jempere debuted on freerange in 2013 but quickly got soon after got snapped up for ep s on dirt crew, let s play house and most recently room with a view. he also owns and manegs the fata morgana label from his base in saint petersburg. pittsburgh track authority are the genre bending trio releasing some of the finest house and techno from the east coast of the us on their own label in the machine age as well as esteemed imprints such as azuri, argot and finale sessions. kuniyuki is something of a japanese enigma, staying resolutely below the radar despite being heralded by many (including derrick may) as a major inspiration. the multi-instrumentalist has collaborated with henrik schwarz, vakula, dj nature and jimpster and has released on mule and sound of speed and remixed dj sprinkles, joe clausell and ananda project.

the inimitable ld nero with his first outing for running back. best-known for his merits on trelik and a poetic sound which is distinctively his own, ld nero immerses himself in a rare breed of deep house music that isn’t classicist, yet dateless, emotional but not kitschy, and most of all meditative without drowsiness. devoid of any second thoughts, these are three tracks made for those wee hours in the morning that may never end.

juan ramos lives on planet earth but channels voices from the aether. this is his first offering for the esp institute. on side a, last of the natives shows us just what we’re dealing with, a master manipulator of sound and consciousness. juan culls the toughest kick drums and thickest latex bass slaps from a deep burial in our psyche and peppers them with alien chants and fleeting electronic flutes—a combustible sense of spontaneity that may at first appear chaotic but after fully immersed in juan’s demented world, we find ourselves willfully under his control. on side b, enemy of enemy is friend also sets off from a disorienting place where a slow progression of acid, shakers and toms takes a good minute to allow us some footing around the groove. once settled into his sophisticated rhythm, juan opens the door to a glorious combination of chords, clanking guitars, shakers that scrub back and forth and the occasional smear of paranormal synth. we at the esp institute are enamored by juan’s seemingly infinite skill for crafting mood and extracting optimism from darkness, but seriously, what color speedotm should she wear this summer?

spanish musician alex font delivers the third release from his acme imprint this may with two groove led cuts set for a limited release of 200 copies on vinyl. since his first release in 2008, alex font has been etching his name into the worlds of house and minimal, building up an impressive back catalogue of releases on labels including oblack and nite grooves. his imprint acme s debut release 001 garnered support from dyed soundorom, ricardo villalobos, seth troxler, san proper and sascha dive amongst many, and font returns to deliver the third instalment in the labels catalogue. la buena onda kicks off the release with a series of punchy kicks, organic percussion licks and general funkiness before easing into a classic house groove reinforced by its compelling lead line and charming vocals. second offering sincopa y contratiempo switches things up with a minimal arrangement of shuffling hats, glitchy pops and clicks, a distinctly off-kilter swing and delicate nuances throughout its near 12 minute journey.

sebastian mullaert is of course first of all known as half of minilogue, a duo so influential in the hypnotic field of techno that korg recently named a synthesizer after them. lately, sebastian has focused on his solo path under the wa wu we moniker, releasing stripped back and personal music on his own wa wu we label, the cryptic s.e.l.f label and now on kontra-musik. on the title track travellers, sebastian mullaert uses a straight up techno formula that may surprise listeners who haven t followed his move into wa wu we territory. you almost get the impression sebastian buried a recording destined for a rigid techno label in a deep forest back in the 90 s and has now decided to uncover it again, finding that the track has matured under the black soil.

april showers bring may flowers, but this april claude vonstroke brings you the rain break. inspired by two different songs from the 80s - (razes classic break for love and oran juice jones the rain), claude has replayed and re-sung all the music from scratch to make a special cover tune of both tracks changed and combined into a surefire dirtybird classic. to quote vonstroke, i kept singing the break for love bassline over and over again in my head but the vocal that always popped in over the top was from the oran juice jones. i cant explain why that happened but i just thought they went together so well that i ran with it.here comes the b is a much weirder affair. built with massive psychedelic effects, a huge kick and almost no hi-hat pattern, this is late night cavemen music at its best. this big release from cvs will have you wishing for a downpour so you can go walking in the rain.

king ghazi is shadi khries and gilbert cohen. recorded in amman / may 2014. all the music presented here is original, and has been recorded in jordan in may 2014. this project was born when i met shadi in paris, at the percussion recording sessions for acid arab. from these sessions came the idea of&#8203,,,,,exploring local music styles on the verge of disappearing, in jordan and elsewhere in the middle east. it was also an opportunity for me to meet exceptional people and wonderful artists. for 15 days, we travelled through jordan, recording local musicians. here we hear osama al khairat aka abu sayah, an exiled syrian musician who plays the yarghoul (two flutes linked together by beeswax. one plays a drone, the other the corresponding range, all while blowing continuously). i want to specially thank shermine sawalha for allowing us to record in the living room of her parents house, as well as for coordinating the whole project. without her energy and patience, this record would not be in your hands today.

barcelona based producer maurice aymard joins parisian artist j.e.e.p to deliver their ‘mellocoton’ ep in may via seven villas, featuring three original cuts and remixes from manoo and closed paradise. having garnered support from industry heavyweights including laurent garnier and ricardo villalobos over the years, maurice aymard has certainly established a notable presence within electronic music. here we see maurice pair up with j.e.e.p, a name known to many from following his involvement in projects including ‘the hints’ with quarion and ‘the egyptian nipples’ alongside massimiliano pagliara, whilst his back catalogue boasts releases on labels such as apersonal music, sonar kollektiv seven villas where he returns to here

daniela caldellas is a producer and dj from brazil. having released music in many styles and guises over the years, burn the past, her debut offering as terr, sees her return to her electro and techno roots. this three track ep on hotflush recordings showcases caldellas extensive capabilities as a producer, with a variation of styles present throughout. from the vocal refrains of burn the past via metropoliss electro flirtation to the stadium-sized may day, caldellas flexes a sure-footed range that hints at whats to come.

molecule is the type of guy that does things his own way. and for his first album that will be released on may 20th, he chose to bring his whole music equipment aboard of a ship on which he stayed for 34 days. for the record store day, he is coming up with an insight of his work’s result, and even some songs of those that he has already experimented in live…a powerful and deep sound that could only be created with such an experience, in the middle of the sea. on b-side chloe and torb are his guest for 2 efficient remixes of “rockall” and “hébrides”.

mike ash returns to super rhythm trax after providing the very first release and gives us 4 authentic and acidic warehouse smashers. mike ash may be familiar from early releases on moving shadow and rising high records under a variety of pseudonyms in the early 90s but in the last 10 years has become synonymous with releasing mind blowing and true electro under his own name. when he turns his hand to acid house, the results mirror the high quality and his no nonsense approach shines through having lived and breathed the music and culture back when it was exploding in the late 80s and early 90s. in his own words i tried to keep with the original 1988/1989 vibe. i didnt use any synths / sounds / samples that weren t available past 1990. its all juno / sh-101 / 303 / jupiter / 808 / 909 / 707 / 606 and samples from the beats breaks & scratches vol 1&2inch the tracks exude a raw and strangled soul and are a bold and comfortingly honest take on the warehouse and pirate radio sound of the uk.

repress 2016 - the king of afrobeat is reinterpreted by the uks lodger. true sunshine music just in time for summer! for the third in the stamp series, we turn our attention to west-africa and the black president himself. englands lodger has crafted two superb reinterpretations that are part edit, part remix and all parts dancefloor dynamite. odoo and afro cuts may be instantly recognisable yet they are cunningly extended, subtly tweaked in all the right places and most importantly retaining the source materials core, that inimitable nigerian funk. limited vinyl pressing - hand stamped.

detroit pressed, official re-master another juan atkins classic from the incredible metroplex catalogue. the chase presents frenetic synth stabs and an electro back beat, further defining the new musical form, detroit techno. reworkings by derrick may add to the dance floor appeal of this classic. as fresh today as its original 1989 release.

next up on africa seven is the second edition of our -african funk experimentals- lps. with these we took some of our favourite african artists, choose the most funky we can find and then put together a compilation of their choicest and funkiest tracks. of course that may not be their most popular or best selling tracks..., but that s just fine. we are digging for the funk.

gari romalis and lello di franco - dreamin for the uninitiated, our man gary romalis is the unsung master of detroit’s house and techno scene. having djed across the motor city’s top venues for the last three decades, gary is somewhat of a seminal figure for many of detroit’s djs currently at the forefront. following a slew of high quality releases on various labels over the past few years, gary now unleashes that special flavour on us for skylax 142! he is not alone though. with him, he brings all round italian partymaker, and top selector in his own right, lello di franco. let me tell you, this duo’s collaboration is something to behold. throughout all 3 tracks on the record, gary and lello maintain the essence of what the detroit underground is all about, stripped back tracks with soul that never feel like they go ‘big’ for the sake of it. while dreamin (wanda mix) may be packing a big kick and power clap combo, it’s the elegantly filtered, jazzy sample that will leave you wishing that the track lasted forever. the vibe takes a dip right into the deep in detroit underground (beat dat mix). spacious pad synths alongside a mesmeric vocal carry us through. taking a step back up, afrobeat rounds off the ep, made with a solid toolkit of afro-centric samples.
