bodo elsel has only done a handful of records and the two that i have known and loved since 1998 were put out on playhouse, the excellent housey sister-label of mighty klang elektronik. one track in particular, discount baby, has always stood out in my mind as a high water mark in the sacred art of groove (you may have heard of it). punchy accents and resonant bass layered with trippy vocal loops, its dubby acid house of the highest order, made by a mysterious german lego-master, who the a&r team of mike mind and thomas st shindig managed to coax back into activity.
it only took bodo a year to answer mr. minds email, but he eventually delivered three amazing tracks... >haustier< revitalizes piano house. >mai< is incredible, and >mein haus< is one of the top few all-time expressions of the greatness/meaning of germany, putting it in the fine company of the autobahn, sven väth and christmas-market schwein. nice wibes!!
the icing on the cake was that bodo made it very clear he wanted no part in royalties or any of that business crap... he just wanted 42 copies of the record. yes. 42.

massive trippy techno release by swedish rising star van rivers and it rocks like hell! van rivers worked as producer on the debut album of fever ray (karin dreijer from the knife) and also tours with her live band. his previous releases on stockholm ltd and islands & islets got big support from marcel dettman, josh wink, ryan elliot, joey beltram and this release will surely follow. stretched out on pavement is a deep, punchy and trippy techno piece for the floor as well as the mind, like you may expect from a sd records release. the nukubus remix on the b side takes everything into the pumping techno/electro arena with a soulful, spacey edge to it. both mixes are spot on and will rock many floors. big one!

clone classic cuts continues to dig in the crates to bring back forgotten or obscure records from the past! this is 3 tracks by da posse (produced by hula... one of the outthere brothers... and with maurice joshua, k fingers & martell). strings & its my life are chicagos take on detroit techno... a rare release that sounds like a early derrick may record (think the dance) but maybe slightly more straight forward (as one might expect from chicago). a rare piece in house and techno history since this is one of the rare examples of a record that doesnt show the clear difference between chicago and detroit in the late 80s. this record most likely got produced within 1 year after rhythm = rhythms legendary nude photo and strings of life releases (both 87 and this came out in 88). as extra bonus track we have the groove. a phat bass driven chicago acid track that still rocks it. another fine piece of powerful dance music history back in the spot light!

after almost a year hiatus the detroit grand pubahs are back with their detelefunk label. detelefunk being an abbreviation for detroit (det) electronic (ele) funk, they relaunch their imprint with a remixes series of some of their favourite producers remixing tracks from their last 3 albums. hence the title of the series being made up of words from all these album giving us the funtastic “buttfunkula and the remixes from earth”. this is the first of 2 volumes / eps that will offer new remixes, leading into a remix compilation featuring the finest remixes of the pubahs music from over the years. volume 1 sees the minimal originator himself, robert hood, take the reigns and remix the title track from the pubahs debut album >funk all y all<, while detroits underground resistance / interstellar fugitives dj 3000 takes one of paris the black fus first tracks >stalking you< (previously released on throw) and adds his albanian rhythms. finally, last but by no means least swedens samuel l session takes time out from producing for his own klap klap label to deliver this peak time dancefloor remix of the infamous >dr bootygrabber<. promising to take robert hood, dj 3000 and samuel l sessions on a galactic ass trip in their star ship was paris the black fu & the mysterious mr os way of getting them to do remixes. >now all i have to do is get them to deliver< comments paris from his secret lab >i do plan to bring them home after the remixes have been released. working with these artists has been a goal of ours for the past few years, and now that they ve been abducted may the funk be with all of us<

the word >detroit< is one that is used far too often in todayÆs techno realm. it seems that as soon as someone puts a pad over the top of a 4x4 kick drum they have the right to file their music under >detroit techno<. soà when tracks like this arrive in your inbox with no accompanying information, well itÆs a breath of fresh air to say the least. these four tracks by new boy mick welch truly capture the essence of detroit, bringing to mind the classic works by derrick may, kenny larkin and even hints of influences a little closer to home, b12, redcell, kirk degiorgio and the rest of the applied rhythmic technology crew for example. highly recommended.

flint kids are london based electronic music duo dave smith & daniel nolan. they began writing together in 2000 on an akai mpc 2000, s600, korg trinity and 303. years later, after having brought laptops, logic, ableton and other electronic goodies, it became clear that the sounds they were hearing in their heads were possible to recreate. their passion for so many different styles of music saved them from ever being pigeonholed, glitches & bleeps fuse with organic matter fired from a techno blunderbuss to create a pool of binary sputum that finds no home in any one genre. what may begin as a well earned candlelit soak in the tub of ambiance can quickly drain away as they pull the plug, leaving the listener cascading down a dank, jagged hole with only a rung less ladder made of plasticine.... not for the faint hearted!

disco fizz is the second album by italian disco group azoto. many say that azoto pioneered the whole italo sound, with incredibly ahead of their time productions going right back too 1977. disco fizz may contain one of the most covered disco tracks of all time san salvador, which has reared its head under countless of remixes and pop cover versions, however if you dig a little deeper this album is packed full of incredible and timeless italo disco. anytime or place literally jumps out the speakers to get you moving, while >exalt exalt< showcases their take on the darker side of electronic disco.

phantasma volume 2 by dinky, matthew styles and pier bucci is out now. this lovingly designed record is produced by three artists we really like and and it is just grea they decided to work with us again. matthew is damn sure one of our favourite producers and pier s skills are nothing short of his. on the last release we made with them, they d worked together as oblique strategies on balld inc. for phantasma volume 2 pier wrote a track on his own, highlighting the noble beats he is known for and expanding the explicit cadenced patterns with a chord phrase that leads the structure to perfection. dinky whose work was released on such labels as cocoon, traum, vakant and of course on her own imprint horizontal composed the other side together with matthew and you can sense their familiarity at once. the two arranged >choises< carefully, sleek and free of any kind of hubris. well, this attitude is hart to find these days and their versed piece may calm your stressed out ears both in the club and at home
