there arent many artists that can lay claim to having put out records on labels as divergent as rough trade and john talabot�s hivern discs. perhaps this is because few artists express such genuine diversity in their musical tastes and creative explorations as david kitt. since the turn of the decade as new jackson he has mined a seam of driving, ghostly house to run parallel with his solo strand of ambient folk electronica. his debut release in 2011 the night mail on pogo channeled early record collection heroes aphex twin and orbital through to drexciya and projekt pm but had one foot firmly in the 21st century beaming in like some futuristic cyberballad. on the flip side hussle free had that mix of house and boogie sensibilities with dark and dusty synths and vocoder that would become a signature. this was followed by acclaimed releases on hivern, permanent vacation, major problems, apartment and most recently cin cin. his debut album set for release on all city in may was recorded in kitt�s bedroom studio overlooking dublin bay, its nocturnal hues very much a product of the nightshift often working on headphones with the rest of his housemates fast asleep. it takes full advantage of the scope of the lp format, ebbing and flowing between deep house club ready gems and more restrained and meditative beatless moments for the morning after. the recording process yielded many eureka moments with kitt finally nailing sounds that had hitherto proved elusive. a key moment was getting a bank loan to buy an sp 1200 sampler

irenic. aimed at peace and brought to life as a steady output for spiritual groove based music. first installment by novio dub tribe offers 3 tracks that may differ in style but created with the same mindstate. �kakiuchi� is all about serenity and echoed drums, �solfa� brings some aquatic tech to the mix while �meguro� is a classic example of an oldschool dub workout.

seasoned memory athletes will no doubt recall the turbo�s past affiliation with the former soviet union (proxy, tiga tigayevich khristorozhdestvensky), and recent geopolitical developments have prompted the label to once again hedge its bets. our a&r team spent countless hours sifting through layer after layer of russian underground music, a shocking amount of which turned out to be fake soundcloud accounts from producers based in florida. in fact, our best intelligence suggests that dimitri veimar may be the only person making music in russia today. for the 30 minutes a day he is not trading in politically moderate twitter-bot futures, veimar produces dark, raw-dog electro. he has already released music with omnidisc and renate, so it makes little sense to us why we have to communicate with him via a mole in the canadian embassy in moscow, which is further complicated by the fact that the mole is also an aspiring dj/producer whom we have to keep happy at all costs. you have no idea how much has been sacrificed in order to shield you from the realpolitik of international dance music.

to the untrained ear a collaboration between mosaic boss steve o sullivan and minimal house maestro ricardo villalobos may not seem like the most obvious sound clash. however, dig a little deeper and you ll find that both these artists have a long history and shared love of stripped back aesthetics and dubbed out rhythms carving out respective sounds that have never strayed far from their roots. sullric is the result of a daylong session at the end of 2016 where the pair plugged in, switched on and set everything to cycle: recording several hours worth of material to tape with an edit of their favourite passage worked into two versions in post-production.

onboard having come up with an annual-ish drop of 12inches since 2010, even brenden aka chmmr set aside the spring of 2016 to challenge himself to a new format: a full-length album. a true nostalgic, he uses compass point-era and early italo sounds for inspiration and attempts to simulate these styles. this makes for a melodic, chuggy and graphic album that belongs a little more in the living room than on the dance floor. with 10 tracks of dusty rhythms and the honest, naive and spacious themes that is brendens signature, its a record designed to signal that todays technological future may not be as different as yesterdays. features a nice-looking cover painting drawn by the late harold cohens aaron program - automation at its finest. hidden behind his chmmr moniker is even brenden, whose summery debut found its way into the world via norwegian psych-disco label luna flicks in 2010. the record became somewhat of a soughtafter item and after making pit stops at relish, dødpop and untz untz records, he landed on prins thomas full pupp in 2014 and have stayed put ever since, all the while enjoying a steady habit of record jocking and the occasional keyboard duty in telephones now-defunct live band. even resides in oslo makes odd waves without vowels.

subb-an and adam shelton may be plenty busy with their own endeavours, but they still know how to bring it home to roost on their own one records. this time around they ve both turned to the same vocalist, isis salam, to deliver some insistent instruction atop their lean and mean productions. subb-an s -self control- is a cool and deadly workout that places the emphasis on the bass and places salam s classic speech at the front of the mix. shelton gets into a more jacking frame of mind on -only now-, whipping up a raw chicago flavour to devastating effect.

charlie watts meets the danish radio big band is the kind of album that many jazz fans had probably given up hope of hearing. in the glory days of big band jazz and arrangers like oliver nelson coming up with brilliant music, albums like this were, if not commonplace, at least more readily available. the truth is there is nothing commonplace about this album, it is a sheer delight.
anyone who knows charlie, knows how much he loves jazz. a few years ago when he and i were looking at a photo of the stones playing in the 1960s he pointed at a particular cymbal and said, �i�ve still got that cymbal, but i don�t use it on stones� gigs, it�s too good for them. i just use it on my jazz gigs.� there�s no doubt, that�s the cymbal you hear on the first part of the �elvin suite�.
charlie watts is one of the great ambassadors for jazz and every jazz lover will relish this record, and the fact that charlie is involved may bring jazz to the attention of some that are not sure if they like jazz. listen to this and you know you do.

the 3rd release from detroit influenced japanese techno label select kashiwa. derrick may s already played a1.twilight and shadow. a2.life sounds like mixture of japanese game and animation music plus detroit techno. and anacatesthesia track b1.walking on the cloud. all three tracks consist of japanese sensitivity and detroit style funkiness + soulful sound. this is more classic detroit than recent tracks from detroit.

there is a couple downstairs they don�t specially like each other and nothing matches between them, but they are together everyday and they said things could be worst. they have two large boxes with one hole hiding their faces so they just see what they want to see. they select what is important to look at and stare at it for hours. sometime they may both look at the same thing but they don�t even know it. this is a small part of the soundtrack running in their boxes.

javonntte may hail from detroit but his sound more naturally aligns with the likes of kai alce and that soulful, bumping atlanta vibe. this 12- for troubled kids makes for a perfect case in point, not least on killer opening track -walking in the rain- with its irrepressibly funky groove and on-point vocal turn. -yes house- takes things in a more stripped direction without compromising on warmth, while -united we dance- heads towards an even more club-ready approach full of booming bass and sharp swinging drums. that s just the a-side, and with even more soul-powered goodness spilling out of the flip, there can surely be few house heads out there that wouldn t find a loving home for this record.

claremont 56 has always had close links with japan�s vibrant music scene, with founder paul �mudd� murphy making annual trips for djing and live performances. it�s perhaps unsurprising, then, that the label�s latest limited-edition vinyl release comes from japanese outfit okinawa delays, a project founded by producer, dj and long-time friend of the label takeo.
some of you may already be familiar with okinawa delays thanks to 2016�s hana, a cover of a popular 1995 j-pop hit featuring original vocalist satoko ishimine. the singer is a well-known performer in her native japan, having released a number of acclaimed records on toshiba emi throughout the 1990s.

inaugurating 2016 with lee holman�s debut �one man army� on raw waxes, the italian imprint welcomes the new year with a series of remixes of the irish producer�s release of last may, which feature four benchmarks of contemporary techno: cassegrain, distant echoes, haiku and kimyon. the record is out on 12� vinyl format. it comes on black vinyl with an additional hand numbered paper insert realized by german illustrator benedikt rugar, who also designed the illustrations of lee holman�s �one man army�, the drawing is a continuation of that release� visual abstract porn concept.

during the last ice age glaciers slowly carved away the landscape creating mineral rich sediment. for hundreds of thousands of years melt water carried this fine-grained sediment downstream to parts of north america. in some areas strong winds carried this sediment and deposited it forming a network of ridges and dunes. these deposits of loose silty wind-blown, or aeolian, sediment are called loess. flash forward to the present, and the duo of clay emerson and ian pullman may seem to have gone the way of the glaciers and all but disappeared. instead, their signature loose aural silt has been slowly and methodically accumulating and now makes up their new full-length pocosin. others may have no point of reference and pocosin is a welcome introduction to the sound of loess, in a mere blink of an eye from when they began.

22.02.85 is the new album from bastien keb. initially conceived as a concept album about a stripper lost in the city (like a straight-to-video follow up to showgirls), 22.02.85 has a distinctly nocturnal edge to it. the city at night, lost in a crowd, abandoned petrol stations, empty kebab shops, broken florescent lights. like a half-forgotten dream, familiar yet unnerving. he says all the songs are all about girls apart from two about a big lug. you may catch a phrase here and there but the context is all in the feel: there s a melancholy edge, but i don t wanna depress people. sad but hopeful? if that s possible.

dubfire and miss kittin have scored another big hit in the form of their second collaboration ride, the follow-up to the much-loved anthem exit. now, many destroyed dancefloors later and they�re unleashing a big pack of remixes to sit alongside their two original versions. solomun may best known for big melodies and hooks, but his remix boldly displays his affinity for heads down techno. a beast of a track, it centers around ticking percussion and pulsating synth delays with a throbbing low end. minimal in approach, maximal in aesthetic, it�s a no-nonsense groove. matthew dear dons his audion guise to remind us how instrumental he was in formulating that oddball techno sound a decade ago, making good use of the vocals in the heady breakdowns and matching them with unsettlingly wavering synth sirens and an almost tribal bass stomp. it�s full of atmospheric touches and pulls off a big room feel without resorting to cliches. depeche mode, erasure and yazoo legend vince clarke is a personal hero of dubfire�s, making his appearance on this package all the more of a special, rare treat. his chunky house groove is decked out with rolling congas, electro arpeggios and a yearning, bluesy guitar lick. french star djedjotronic has himself remixed depeche mode, and his version rounds off the package with throbbing low end, harrowing synths, techy percussion and brooding reese bass swells. with four very different mixes to choose from, this is an immense package that is set to cause havoc on dancefloors worldwide for some time to come.

matrixxman has been a dekmantel regular for a couple of years now. the san francisco producer continues to impress with a new triptych for dekmantel records. over the course of three eps (rhythm, acid, polyphony), charles mccloud duff displays his versatile and original take on house and techno. the concept of the triptych is to explore the range within the confines of a particular limitation. this second ep sector ii: acid- shows an exercise in acid. similarly, the tb-303 may conjure certain knee-jerk reactions at a glance, but acid has the potential to cover a broader palette of emotion than one might initially expect. sector ii holds three squirming 303 sequences and the classic rhythmic drum programming of arrival, bad acid and i am matrix. rites on the other hand is more subtle and fluent, swinging with hazy acid flourishes and dynamic syncopation.
