reso the alias of london-based producer alex melia returned to the dance music world in late 2017 with the inaugural release of his new rx0 label, kodama, a four-track ep of spirited dance music. for the second release on the label, reso has chosen two productions that act as a counterpoint of sorts to the first ep. where rx001 was a broad mission statement, rx002 is a laser-focused burst of breaks, moods, and programming finesse.

for this release metrist delves into a set of carefully constructed and deeply rhythmic but ear-grabbingly idiosyncratic, mixed fidelity dancefloor-geared oddities. the first three tracks are united, in a fashion, by the artist’s skill at programming a series of drum tracks that set a definite tone for the productions. within a quite partisan field of often microscopic generic variety, largely pinned down to the tempo and timbre of electronic drums, here metrist has pursued a tricky-to-define path. the bounce of new jack swing is twisted amongst stripped back polyrhythms, equal parts groove and glitch seasoned by some futuristic acid filters that create a constantly shifting aura of space and textural nuance around the individual drum hits. quite often arrhythmic interjections punctuate these ‘grooves’, be it the sawing bursts of noise and snarled, incoherent vocals on ‘an soaep’, the non-language and playful, bubbling bass surrounding the half time feel of ‘on golden seize’ that builds to something approximating an industrial take on uk funky or the brash sub-wobbles that intrude ‘pantomimer tongue’s juddering knife-scraping-on-a-balloon stutters. ‘caaacel the horze’ closes the record in a less weighty style, with crunchy arpeggios running on a synth that sounds like it’s picking up interference from a radio channel, as snatches of moaned vocals allude to a deeply ambiguous yet chilling narrative behind the music. thudding kicks intrude on the skittish melody but in a non-rhythmic way reminiscent of someone trying desperately to snatch your attention by banging on the adjacent wall. gauzy melodic textures in the background provide a calming counterpoint to the uneasy qualities of the composition

with releases from lerosa, andy mac and piezo already under our belts, idle hands strides towards the summer with a transmission from a kindred spirit across the pond. area, sometimes known as m50, has been flying the flag for forward thinking electronic music in chicago for a long time. his radio shows on wnur have a distinctive quality one step to the side of the music his hometown is best known for, while his label kimochi sound has released incredible music from the likes of benjamin brunn, strategy and many more besides. as a producer area has been equally prolific since first emerging in 2007. from ethereal sound and steadfast to untilmyheartstops and sequencias, his various approaches to rhythm and texture are all bound together by a meditative quality that feels like a perfect fit for idle. on this single, both sides of the 12- continue the theme of dusty, dusky 4/4 area is most widely known for, locking on to a house groove while sporting the abstract atmosphere of techno. -rlgl- is an understated, emotional heater that uses looped up fragments as a counterpoint to the more lilting strings and static that bed the track. notice takes a more overtly melancholic approach with its lingering, heavily processed keys that drift in between a tough set of drums. theres a punch to the track that will translate beautifully to a big system, even as the melodics spell out a more intimate listening experience.

the next release on man power’s me me me features two emotive leftfield house cuts from dsc, the newly minted production alias of desert sound colony, aka liam wachs, the man behind the newly launched holding hands record label. wake up, is a sweetly melodic track of pulsing house, with coming round providing a pumping and muscular leftfield techno counterpoint. on remix duties man power invites north east upstart elliot adamson to remix wake up, before his full length ep coming up next on the label. hotly tipped by everyone from jackmaster to jamie jones, elliot is a superstar in the making, and relishes the opportunity to flex his more esoteric muscles with a slice of deconstructed electro that hints at the startling musical breadth, which the young producer is only beginning to reveal. coming round is remixed by none other the legendary rex the dog, who is not only an artist who man power has huge admiration for, but also someone he is pleased to call a good friend. the trust between the two artists shines through, as “rex” provides possibly one of the most unfettered dancefloor tracks of his career.

limit and asymmetric are in fact both the work of st. petersburg-based producer evgeniy sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary d&b productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. stormy is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and quarantine is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. the b-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of transzendental and the soulful yet ruff mood of jazz is making a smart counterpoint to the heavier a side.

alex cortex delivering the heat!! mr cortex is kicking hard with a direct and mental techno tracks! oscillon, a1, is a bleepy affair, direct and repetitive, but please, play it loud and watch. rheometric is in the same alley as oscillon but bringing the bleeps and glitches trip even more in your face. combined with the fat but quirky bassline, it does the peak time techno thing extremely well. b1 s title -shear wave- does the track justice. backed by a fat downtempo beat, the distorted 303-reminiscent synth line cuts through the mix in a way that s impossible to ignore. strain rate tensor rounds up the previous three cuts, also in a very dancefloor-friendly manner. bubbly main lead and anxiety-inducing pad sneaking in the background seem to be the main thing, until another synth hits you as a counterpoint and flips everything upside down. proper no-nonsens stuff!!

power station continue to present their penchant for dark dance club sounds as the third edition of the kris baha-led imprint looks to another melbourne local by way of lochlan denholm aka disrute. after surfacing on the labels sampler debut just last year, reflexivity sees lochlan a chance to explore his style of twisted, pulsing homage to new wave and motorik throb. anvil landing wastes no time laying down intentions. sparse friendly drums are met with a modulating bass line and lazy arpeggio, an incessant sonar pulses and drum rolls intensify. snorkel continues the mid-tempo intensity, distressed kick counterpoint with aggressive stabs that rise and swirl before reaching a powerful climax, a track reminiscent of the 2000 s turbo-charged italo disco edits. on the flip we see japanese supergroup mascaras, made up of chida and 5ive (cos/mes) tackle unreleased kabutops. vocal fans of disrute s kabu track from the label sampler, here mascaras provide a fast paced acid-heavy reinterpretation, intense yet restrained with erratic drum trickery taking disrute to techno territory. finally, disrute reflects with title track reflexivity. digital arpeggios and a brooding one note bass work around curt cress style harmonic drums, a low slung piece for the early evening. hand drawn picture sleeve and label, a complete package that signals exciting times for power station ahead.

ritornell’s richard eigner & abby lee tee originally teamed up to provide the score for a collaboration with filmmaker andreea sasaran and illustrator katja seifert entitled »melting sphere«. sharing a passion for the combination of filigree electronics with playful timbres of diverse acoustic instruments and odd utensils, the cooperation of the two producers was a logical choice.
»melting sphere« merges subsonic bass, kalimba rhythms, accordion sounds and toy bells, all framed by eavesdropping recordings of abby lee tee’s cat, bathroom squeaks for five minutes of organic downbeat bliss.
»tired dancers« on the flipside offers a melancholy tale of seduction relayed from the shadows, with field recordings of nightly city noise, a reversed music box melody, hypnotic chords and meticulous percussion. delicate, celestial cello (by lukas lauermann) and contrabass flute emerge as counterpoint to this rhythmic hypnosis.

where his previous effort, 2014s *the hollow organ*, dealt in dense, distressed sonics, *olympic mess* is younger responding to a period spent engaged with loop-based industrial music, dub techno, and balearic disco. these musical references, all of which can induce hypnotic states and feelings of euphoria, inform ten evocative aural landscapes which unfurl over the course of an hour and act almost as a counterpoint to the turmoil that spawned them.

locked groove marks his return to hotflush with the grandiose, puzzlingly-titled >enigma<. its a colossal record whose bass-centric melody looms large. large enough, even, to inspire what is nowadays a rare scuba remix. a counterpoint to these theatrics comes in the way of wandering in a cage, a broken-beat creeper flaunting the belgians ear for subtlety, and two beatdown versions of the title track that fit neatly into your dj toolbox.

nofitstate return with four tracks from hot talent a1 bassline whose reputation has been building of late from a succession of releases for the likes of dirtybird, get physical and gruuv amongst others. here hidden agenda finds the young producer in true devastating form. skippy percussion, a nod to the uks garage scene, vibes the track along nicely whilst the bass does the damage. burnt out piano island delves deeper, acting as a neat counterpoint to the more main room agenda. here the style is much more nuanced with a more hypnotic leaning. outsider picks up the pace against, albeit in a subtle, uplifting vibe with warped pianos and razor sharp percussion. t moe p rounds things off nicely with a moody bassline driven groove.

dense & pikas offshoot label kneaded pains returns with another techno focused 4 tracker from the mysterious moss a1 brings the heat with a spacious warehouse jam, kicking off with a warm pad before unloading with the tracks monstrous bass hook. a2 dives into lo:fi realms with a moody yet effective groove complete with male spoken vocal. b1 keeps things main room albeit in a more clean and serene way with razor sharp kicks and percussion providing a nice counterpoint to the rougher edge of the a side before b2s deliciously deep jam rounds off the ep.

returning with the love is a luxury 12-inch, a two-track ep co-released by matt weiners own cgi and geographic north, twins ventures deep into the collected unconscious of our singular broken heart. elegantly expansive and densely fluid, each track a fragmented careen of erotic house music. with more than an eye on the dancefloor and an ear for hypnotic luster, a-side *love runs deep* hosts dubby house perfectly suited for basic channels low-end minimalism. b-side *the empty deep* conveys the desolate counterpoint, enchanting in its sullen hysteria. weiners dubby explorations of an exposed vulnerability manifest in the vinyl itself, containing and exposing both tracks with complete transparency, baring themselves on clear crimson wax.

daze maxim adds another episode to his practice of long-form explorations, on this his second release for lisbon’s assemble music. this time hes joined by a master in this field, baby ford, whose remixes over the past few years continue his own distinctive development of extended minimal house trips. dazes beginning an ending rides a skippy, loose beat for several minutes, the snares and hats gradually opening up as wordless vocalizations exclaim and interject with increasing regularity, the bass bumping contentedly underneath. pads join the equation for an intricate midsection – evoking memories of alcachofa-era happy experimentalism that nonetheless fit within daze maxims disciplined and dancefloor-oriented approach.peter ford recasts the original into his now unmistakable soundspace, where the push and pull between front-and-centre rhythmic components and evanescent background atmospherics creates that recognizable but undefinable sense of emotion, felt but unexplained. in ford’s world there isnt anything as simple as a beginning or an end, so the remix provides a valuable counterpoint to the original. given their now impressive track record, its no surprise that assemble music has pulled off another cohesive statement that works equally on the body and the mind.

dva started off hyperdubs barrage of albums in 2012 with his brilliant >pretty ugly<, and now closes the the year with the >fly juice< eps bumper selection of machine tooled tracks, each created for optimum dancefloor damage and road tested by dva, kode9 and a select bunch of djs. these tracks are a brilliant example of what he has been describing as power house for a while, a colourful chunky techno sound that switches up every 8 bars like grime and has plenty of shuffle and offbeat swing as a counterpoint to the 4/4 drums.

the see it through ep is the debut release from kris le vay. the eponymous a side is the most dance floor orientated track, with kicking drums and a driving, melodic bass line guaranteed to get the crowd moving. its also an awesome headphone experience, with involved, complex percussive elements that keep the ear interested and euphoric breakdowns that truly pull at the heartstrings. the b1, entitled melt, is a cheeky little number that bounces around with plenty of polyrhythm. the counterpoint between the deep bass and twinkling top melody leads to the unconventional, yet mesmerising breakdown. the release is rounded off by one hot ride, which is one hot track! starting with ominous dark synths that spin themselves into a stomping hip-hop tempo beat, this anthemic rich blend of sound winds itself up from a menacing introduction on an exhilarating journey through a complex and intricate soundscape. limited to 300 colour vinyl.
