phonica records welcome the latest addition to their ever-growing stable of talent, pick a piper! the brainchild of one brad weber, usually found behind the drum-kit at caribous live shows, angus fraser and dan roberts, pick a piper combines dance-music structures, polyrhythmic percussion, atmospheric sound design, loopy melodies and a focus on electronics and production technique to create a sound poised between the organic and the synthetic and phonica white have been blessed with two killer remixes to release on a limited stamped and numbered 12.

luv jam - better known as andy cole - made his name through outings on we play house and lany recordings, and >mature oak< finds him in fine form, an epic, atmospheric track poised on a bed of analog synths and warm pads, driven by galloping drum mechanics that gradually give way to its climax, an irresistibly squelchy acid bassline that marks it as one of coles most memorable productions to date. on the flipside we get treated to cottams first ever remix. cottam has made an impeccable name for himself, with his signature colourful series of untitled 12s and a contribution to the story imprint. true to his roots, cottams re-rub of >mature oak< is a slo-mo, motorik chugger that makes excellent use of the originals acid line while taking the whole track a step further. its a proper heads down affair that begs for a soundsystem loud enough to do it justice. limited vinyl pressing of 444 copies – hand stamped and numbered. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida.

up next on phonica white is brooklyn based artist justin cudmore. he is a well-known dj thanks to his memorable sessions at the bunker among other new york and many of the best clubs worldwide as well as teaming up with mike servito and gunnar haslam as hot mix dj collective. as well as djing, justin has always been a fan and creator of dance music, he started being part of chicago’s underground scene, deepening his appreciation for the classic house and acid that you can still feel in these new tracks. this new release follows in the wake of ‘forget it’, his last celebrated ep released by the bunker though in our minds his sound has progressed yet again, sounding fuller, faster and rounder. ‘twisted love’ gets straight to the point, with firm and strong percussion joined to a fickle acid bass line. in addition to this, justin weaves in some house-flavoured vocals to keep you hooked until the end of the track. a certified floor-filler of a track. on the flip is ‘about to burst’, a track that starts with a powerful kick drum and grows with new emerging elements, punchy hi-hats coming and going in key moments and a simple keyboard arpeggio that added to an acid bass line catches you instantly. justin’s new ep is unapologetically aimed at the dancefloor. its primary influence may be detroit-flavoured techno yet you’ll also find chicago house and acid elements floating over its powerful backbone, all combining in devastating way, primed for club use. artwork as always is supplied by the talented pedro carvalho de almeida.

sphonica’s white label series returns with a real deep house excursion by chilean producer massiande in the form of his ‘freedom ep’. massiande is an artist of multicultural roots. he was born in santiago, chile, yet he has lived most of his life alongside us american people and has dutch family roots, which has greatly affected the way he perceives and lives music. growing as a big fan of us soul, jazz and disco, he found his way into music production through house and his biggest influences have been artists such as larry heard, ron trent and chris brann (aka wamdue project).

to say the past 2 years have been busy for peggy gou would perhaps be an understatement. prolific both in the studio and behind the decks, 2016 saw the release of no less than four eps across three labels. her two-part ‘art of war’ series on rekids was interspersed with a contribution to ‘phonica white’ series of 12”s.

phonica is proud to present the song for mr. lewis , a new record from austin ato! austin ato may be an unfamiliar name to most right now but you will have undoubtedly heard his music before. the man behind the mask colin bailey - has a decade of music production experience under his belt using aliases such as drums of death, frankie dreams and the slumberjack. following on from his recent 12inch on futureboogie, phonica white unveils the fantastic song for mr.lewis ep. when it comes to producing electronic music, colin proves to be a dab hand at a variety of styles. his work as austin ato updates the classic house sound utilising live instruments drums, percussion and keys alongside electronic elements. at the core of song for mr lewis is a moving speech from civil rights activist representative john lewis on gun control in the united states, a message that sadly remains just as important to this day. on the flip, the dub versions strips everything back to the drums, a raw counterpoint to the deeper original, perfect as a dj tool but a powerful bare-bones track in itself. finally, the blissful morning closes the ep in style, with colin laying keys over the top of a dubbed out drum machine and bass loop that could just keep going and going. oh yeah! artwork as always is supplied by the talented pedro carvalho de almeida.

phonica white returns with two extended cuts from their mainstay artist iori. monsoon & rainfall mark ioris 5th contribution to the label and it may be his best yet. monsoon on the a-side is a deeply hypnotizing piece of dub techno thats destined to cause dance floor destruction. steady kicks & toms open the track up before a relentless downpour of intricate percussion and low-end stabs lock you in for the track’s 10 minute duration definitely one for the long nights in dark rooms. the b-side is a calming contrast to the a side storm. deep and meditative, rainfall comprises sparse modulating synth keys coupled with a bouncy rhythm section and airy spaced-out sound effects that create a dreamy atmosphere. this is iori on top form.

a new white label brought to you by a group of friends including moire&#769,,,,,,,, disguise, etc. in collaboration with phonica records. this marks the debut release from the creative imprint neversleep whose previous work includes the art direction and a&r of moire&#769,,,,,,,’s debut lp *shelter* - out now on werkdiscs/ninja tune - plus various visual work from disguise.
on the a side - a massive floor remix from moire&#769,,,,,,,, melding rhythms and percussion with a driving bass and lead. on the flipside, disguise makes an appearance first with a collaborative party girls edit alongside moire&#769,,,,,,, and then with his own take of mouth shut. this release marks the sound debut of disguise, whose visual and video work on *shelter* helped shape the strong aesthetic root of the album. this can be seen again in the video mixtape on neversleeps website - neversleep.co - presented to complement the release online.

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

phonica records limited offshoot returns with a second 12 inch from the man that kickstarted the label iori. the okinawan producer, whose >galaxy / urge< 12 inch won praise from across the board, has been working prolifically and this is only a brief glimpse of things to come. first up is >spatiotemporal< - a ten and a half techno odyssey towards the deeper echelons of the genre. starting off as a simple drum attern, >spatiotemporal< slowly but steadily builds up, with iori bringing layer after layer of synths proper mid-paced cosmic techno!! its definitely one of those tracks that need to be left to do their work preferably on a loud soundsystem! on the flip, weve secured the remix talents of one of the hottest names in techno at the moment. all the way from cold sweden, skudge have made quite a name for themselves in the last year, with solid releases on their own imprint. their remix of >grit< more than exceeded our expectations. its a masterpiece of stripped down techno that brings to the fore all the parts we like from the original, while taking it in a completely different direction. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida.

don froths >10.000cc / holiday (dubbed out)< is phonica whites sophomore release and it couldnt be any more different to ioris stripped down dub techno. don froth initially appeared on our radar last year with >foam< û a laidback, dubby disco number that effortlessly got us all in summer mood, practically teleporting us to his native venice ca. forget about such nicetiesà >10.000cc s< is >foams< rowdy sibling. a twisted, bass-heavy stomper of a track, that takes disco, dub-step and punk-funk, spins them in blender and spits out one of the rudest basslines weÆve heard in a while. weare talking big here û even giles peterson is a fan. on the flip >holiday (dubbed out)< returns to more familiar territoryà laidback, dubby disco that instantly brings to mind >foam< without being a carbon copy. its breezy, summery and very organic in an analog sort of way. very limited vinyl pressing of 300 copies û hand stamped and numbered. special artwork by pedro carvalho de almeida

the first release on phonica white limited series is from tokyos iori. this young producers impressive work ranges from woozy ambient electronics to full-on club tracks. the common thread is a highly developed sense of texture and arrangement.a-side galaxy is simply lean, expertly crafted techno, led by a rolling bassline and crisp hi-hats, with hypnotic melody patterns skittering off the surface. its a trippy but accessible heads-down affair that has the depth and the bite to do damage at peak-time and in the after-hours alike. urge on the flipside is an even deeper, sub-heavy cut, an insistent, club-friendly groove swathed in burbling synth arpeggios and fx. despite being stripped-back, the sound design and sheer warmth of the production is incredible. the track really breathes.
