the debut offering from singer mark wystrach, lead guitarist jess carson and bass player cameron duddy, collectively known as midland. midland is the embodiment of seventies california country, all smooth eagles harmonies and heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics. their songs are intoxicating country sung with the twang of george strait. and it s impossible to resist. their no. 1 hit single “drinkin’ problem” earned best country song and best country duo/group performance nominations for the grammys 2018. if there was a perfect country album which combined those traditional sounds with modern hooks for me then this is it! (six shootercountry). this vinyl is only available in the uk as part of record store day.

after a two year hiatus graded is back with label founder midland at the controls and its been worth the wait. graded003 picks up where midlands 2013 drumtrak left off, left of centre club music for warehouses and basements alike. the a-side blush first aired during a particularly warm boiler room recording in milan last summer. it turned heads on the night and has garnered endless id requests on the recording ever since. stuttering rolling percussion and a synth line as bold as it is unusual make this one a very strong club tool. on the b-side outpost and holdup take a deeper turn, rich in suspense and expertly programmed drums, theyre unmistakably midland productions drawn from the more obscure corners of his sound pallet.

bicep and midland collaborate for a 12inch. midland plays feel my bicep

this new ep is no exception as this time he draws out immersive pads and understated melody over the top of percussive grit, in parts channeling some of that irresistible autonomous africa flavour. the release has already garnered support djs and radio alike with jamie xx playing out reflex on both his recent boiler room and bbc radio 1 guest mix, while another early unveiling of pitch drift dropped recently on benji bs show.

this is the third autonomous africa ep, the idea being that one ep is released each year and all proceeds are donated to a charity in africa. last years second volume, along with a fundraising night in glasgow and another in london raised several thousand pounds for the mtandika mission in tanzania (more info on that below).

harry agius has been making waves as midland since 2010, releasing a series of increasingly impressive 12”s as a solo artist but also collaborating with the likes of ramadanman (pearson sound), breach and pariah on labels such as aus music, naked naked, works the long nights and his own graded imprint. he is also a prolific remixer who has lent his talents to artists such as lone, guy gerber, julio bashmore, dusky and more. we can proudly say he came to many people’s attention via his first phonica 12” ‘play the game’ back in 2010 and he has remained a friend and regular at the shop ever since. midland’s well deserved rise has been a delight to watch from the sidelines and we’re glad to welcome harry back to phonica with the fantastic ‘before we leave’. it starts slowly but surely as reverb soaked percussion comes to the fore, cushioned by the truly beautiful string melody, which we’re sure will be stuck in many a head this year! this could well be midland’s most deftly handled arrangement yet. running back’s gerd janson wisely decides to stick to the original track’s feel, letting the strings weave their magic, yet also brings the bassline and drums to the forefront. delicately but expertly done. midland rounds out the 12” with his barebones drums and percussion-only ‘bonus beats’ version, perfect dj tool material. we wish more records had these!

now in 2014, we see the return of trace, with remixes from tribal techno legend grain and aus affiliate, leon vynehall.

ltd.repress! londons phonica records calls upon new talent midland for its fifth 12inch release, a four track ep that also includes a remix from dexter. the leeds-based producer is set to blow up in 2010, having announced his arrival last month with the >your words matter< 12inch on aus music, a collaboration with pal ramadanman.

following on from the successful launch of his label graded, midland steps back in to the fray to release another set of werido club jams. occupying the middle ground between classic minimal, oddball house and trippy electronica it is an intriguing new addition to his armoury. grd002 artwork by alexander sullivan.

many of the problems africa faces are a result of outside interference by other countries, and as the 21st century progresses we will see the continued pillage of african resources to feed the global capitalist machine on an unprecedented scale.

graded is a new label run by midland. it arrives after multiple releases on will sauls aus imprint and collaborations with pariah & breach. the focus of the label will be on vinyl, with full artwork sleeves, 180 gram pressings and locked grooves, it will however also be released digitally. initially the label will be used as an outlet for his own productions and collaborations, with a view to later releasing music from his peers. the first release contains two tracks which set the tone for the label, left of centre electronic club music.

hot on the heels of midlands placement ep, aus returns with a remix 12inch featuring lone & motor city drum ensemble. both producers deliver deep, melodic reinterpretations of the originals, with lone accentuating midlands signature sound (whilst flawlessly incorporating his own neon tinged atmospherics) and mcde dubbing out the original, pushing it into throbbing raw cuts territory. both producers are at the top of their game. lone is dominating 2012 with a residency at manchester hot-spot hoya:hoya, a full length dropping in may via r&s that will surely occupy the top of many year end lists, and remixes for radiohead, tensnake & underworld already under his belt. jazz enthusiast motor city drum ensembles sample-based raw cuts series made him a household name within the deep house scene and last years dj-kicks mix set him apart from the pack with its on point mixing and musical diversity. his notable november 2011 boiler room set is considered one of the finest, and is just another example of why mcde has been, and will remain to be, a musical force to be reckoned with. next up on aus will be an ep from bicep & friends with a remix from panoramabar resident steffi.

after his very well recieved through motion ep in 2011 the now londonbased producer returns to aus with the much-anticipated placement ep. staying true to his roots, he delivers four tracks that contribute to the continuing conversation between techno, house, garage and beyond. with a strong focus on intricate detail, lush texture and glacial melody the ep is just as captivating on headphones as it is on the dance floor. the placement ep is currently being remixed by motor city drum ensemble & lone and the fruits of their work will be released as a 12inch single on aus in april so keep your eyes and ears peeled.

last year put leeds-based producer midlands (aka harry agius) name on the map with his successful collaboration with hessle audios ramadanman, >your words matter< on aus music. this year, aus label chief will saul has invited midland back to take a solo swing. its an excursion that explores the boundaries of 2-step, uk garage and techno and consists of two original tracks. on the a side >through motion< shows midlands ability to seamlessly take the spirit of uk garage and fuse it with techno. the tracks moody piano melody is punctured by a dark, pitch-shifted vocal and encircled by the warm atmospherics that have become his trademark. on the flip side is >shelter<, a brooding and cavernous affair whose vocals and whispery atmospherics make this the perfect late night tool.

the enigmatic midland brings more joy with his next release on more music, in an experimental workout fusing the intricacies of dubstep with rapturous house sparks and the epic strands of techno, all highlighted by remixes from radio slave and youandewan.

* rust* is the debut single from the new collaborative project between harry agius (better known as midland) and vocalist robbie redway. the project was formed in leeds, written in london and finished in berlin under the influence of ewan pearson. as midland, harry agius has built a reputation for releasing delicately brilliant bass driven house and techno, and over the course of his various releases he has hinted at a desire to explore sounds away from the dancefloor. coupled with the songwriting talents and vocals of robbie redway, *rust* is the first taste of that exploration.

following the recent release of his stunning fabric64 album, international virtuoso guy gerber brings his mesmerizing productions back on to home ground to release on his supplement facts imprint. dop frontman jaw, london based producer midland and footprintz golden boy clarian north step in to lend their artist talents, creating nothing short of a flawless release.
