psyth launches with the debut ep from rob shields. with a delicate urgency driven by a pulsating post-punk bassline, shards lavishes layer upon rich layer of sound, evoking the cool grooves of peaking lights and chromatics, while a shimmering vocal sample from rebecca sawyer adds an otherworldly sense of longing that echoes through the soul of the release. silhouetted appears more conventional and dance-floor friendly next to shards, but under the surface is something unique and strangely exotic. a mantra-like melody loop gives a nod to minimalist composer terry riley and his solo organ works, while world instruments such as an african kalimba and tibetan singing bowl only heighten the hypnotic and intoxicating quality even further.

falk records will be releasing ‘spaces’ from icelandic experimental producer aaiieenn this august. aaiieenn is the solo project of electronic musician hallmar gauti halldórsson. halldórsson first came to music though being a mover and shaker in iceland’s punk and hardcore scene where he was the “harsh noise guy” with local band distill the world. with aaiieenn however, halldórsson moved away from the guitars and screaming to a fully electronic world of experimental synth music and gorging on the mathematical possibilities and expanses of arpeggio/sequencer driven ambient music. ‘calab-yau’ and ‘continuous property 1’ drip shards of pure crystalline sound into deep crevasses as harmonic droplets ping of gleaming surfaces coated with spongiform bass. the light and effervescent ‘euclidean’ evokes classic ambient works aphex twin, while ‘manifold’ is more direct with a muscular and sturdy bassline. spaces closes with the fluttering and lush ambient sounds of ‘zariksi’ that are carried into the skies by a pulsing and gliding techno beat.

maksim dark returns to his spiritual home of senso sounds - oliver huntemanns much touted imprint for his tougher, technoid leanings. maksim, born in serov, russia, has created an indelible impression over the course of his young career, and ‘movement is clearly the next step on his road to very great things. ‘attack disco is true to form - a lean, mean and tough to the bone piece of techno with a driving, powerful edge. growling, snarling synths sound like shards of metal ripping through the groove producing an intense vibe. ‘coordinate is a notch more reserved, but builds a killer, hypnotic groove through stripped back elements, before maksims off-kilter sound design provides the trippy topping. the title track ‘movement fits its name - the track bursts with energy and atmosphere, propelled by a thick, tactile rhythm and pitched down, demonic vocal by the man himself.

das langerwartete debüt-album der amerikanischen soul und r&b sängerin deva mahal erscheint am 23.03. und wurde von sir elton john bereits als fabelhaft bezeichnet. das verwundert auch nicht so wurde deva ihr enormes talent bereits in die waage gelegt ist doch niemand geringeres als taj mahal ihr vater. deva mahal hat in der vergangenheit bereits mit illustren künstlern wie tv on the radio, sharon jones & the dap kings als auch fat freddy’s drop gearbeitet und ist bei zahlreichen jazz festivals aufgetreten. als erste eigene vÖ erschien ende 2017 die ep “run deep”, die sich ad hoc in der renomierten new york times playlist wiederfand und den startschuss für ihre solo karriere bildete. das album wurde produziert von scott jacoby (vampire weekend, coldplay) und jarett wetherell (beyonce, fka twigs) und bietet einen einzigartigen sound der modernen r&b, pop, soul und gospel verbindet und dabei immer von der überragenden stimme deva mahals getragen wird. der ein oder andere song auf dem album würde auch einer adele gut zu gesicht stehen. die single snakes ist aktuell in der top 100 der deutschen airplay charts mit steigender tendenz!

something happening somewhere returns with a new collection of stories unified under the brand new nowhere compilation series. shards of tales long forgotten are told and retold by a group of fellow travellers, exploring sounds in many shapes and forms. sailing towards an unknown destination, revealed here are the hymns luring you into the abyss… the nowhere 01 vinyl sampler is a carefully curated selection of freshly crafted propellants pressed on wax for the very first time. quince gives us a saturated electronic work-out, combining gritty drum sounds with bass guitar and odd timed synth zaps. kurt baggaley’s detect was a digital exclusive from his remembering infinity ep, now finally available on black gold! it features a similar electro groove but uses artificial intelligence to add vocoder sounds and digitally aliased robot tears. fader from borneo takes a more frontal approach providing a catchy bass riff with warm pads and synthesised strings to guide you in a comfortable trance.

following the surprise release of his slow fade ep last month, daniel avery presents a collection of remixes from surgeon, actress and inga mauer. the remix ep will be released digitally and on 12inch vinyl on march 9th. widely regarded as one of uk electronic musics leading lights and arguably the finest techno dj in the world (fact), with a career spanning over 20 years, surgeon lends his clinical touch to radius, adding an erratic, propulsive beat to avery’s warm synth layers for one of his best remixes yet. werkdiscs head actress meanwhile delivers a pared back and introspective rework of slow fade, shrouding the synth refrain in hypnotic, distorted production, in his first remix following the release of his critically acclaimed 2017 album azd. bunker records inga mauer completes the package, offering a claustrophobic mix pierced with metallic shards that confirms what resident advisor said of the uncompromising russian-born amsterdam-based dj and producer last year: mauer is destined for big things.

7th storey projects is pleased to welcome back the myor massiv head honcho for his 3rd release on our label. earlier this year, coco bryce travelled to tokyo and osaka for a small series of gigs. thoroughly impressed by his experiences there, upon returning home, he immediately took to crafting a slew of jungle and hip hop tracks, heavily influenced by everything he d seen, heard, felt and tasted in the land of the rising sun. the ep kicks off with its title track, ayakashi. dark, fierce and mysterious like the mythical creatures it was named after, it builds up slowly, utilizing a combination of chopped up japanese percussion, haunting flutes and hot pants breaks, before switching to full on amen assault mode halfway through the tune. shinjuku is one of tokyos most well known wards, and also the place where coco found the records from which the samples were sourced to construct this number: a turntablism beat/scratch album, and a compilation of traditional work songs, this particular one originating from the gold mines of the island of hokkaido. on the b1 track, kaguya, he takes a more gentle approach: sweet, yet melancholic, like the miyazaki movie of the same name. the ep is rounded off with hotaru, which borrows from an entirely different source of inspiration, namely dj krush s abstract take on boom bap hip hop. shards of mid-90s mo wax are blended with anime samples, making for a solid two and a half minutes of golden era-esque head nodding.

pinkmans broken dreams welcome a new midnight malcontent into the fold, ernestas sadau debuts with his first 12inch - gonzo on tour. sirens blare, samples hiss in a haze of static before a grizzled snare introduces riots in jail near kaunas. grubby basslines curl into shards of acid, full figured thump sweetened by fragile bars. crackheads from lyon is steeped in the traditions of garage bands and d.i.y. punk. strings snarl and sneer at crashing drum beats, lonesome notes floating in the surge. the foul tempered hiroshima (acid breaks your body mix) demands the flip. beats break and buckle under the leer of lewd 303 lines, a finale bubbling over with violent intent.

after a feature on steffi s fabric 94 mix cd (and the accompanying dolly deluxe 3 release), late night approach debuts on klakson with a hyper funky electro twelve. the two tracks on the a side both show machine music that s simultaneously human, whether it s the melancholic shards of melody buried under -clarence mews- commanding rhythmic pulsations, or the beautifully striking chords on -luvquest-. however, the b-side takes us to gloomy subterranean pastures with the uptempo banger -primo-, while a2 -kit- crosses over into broken beats but still keeps the same shadowy atmosphere.

‘oma is an immense piece of work, taking its sonic cues from borderlands while expanding them into far wilder territories. organic clashes with electronic in a whirlpool of tribal head banging, fragile introspection and beautiful sonic architecture. skittering rhythms, rock solid basses, angelic vocals and heartbreaking instrumentation are guaranteed to make oma one of the most notable drum & bass albums of 2017 and conduct one of its prominent acts.

on top of running his highly respected hope works event series in the north of england, lo shea’s reputation as a producer is unquestionable, with recent years seeing the sheffield-based artist appear on credible imprints such as phonica, never learnt, sze, transit and dext recordings.
metallic percussion is blended with growling bass in ‘let’s roll’ before introducing spooky synths to generate a mesmerising aesthetic. energetic breakbeat drums and intricate melodies then forge ‘tundish’ before thor reinterprets ‘let’s roll’ by sucking you into a dub techno vortex, stripping shards off the original that cascade whilst driving you into an abyss.

Über die elf tracks baut iglooghost einen typisch intensiven, hysterischen und vollkommen durchgeknallten soundtrack auf, bei dem er neue charaktere in seine fantastische welt einführt und außerdem seine alten freunde mr. yote und cuushe zurückholt. mit artwork von iglooghost selbst, enthält das vinyl ein großformatiges, risographisch gedrucktes und zwölfseitiges comic booklet sowie einen stickerbogen mit den charakteren aus neo wax bloom.

shintaro.d is new on the scene, but this promising japanese producer follows up on his debut on his own label init with this assured 12inch for jus groove it, taking the stripped down deep house template and injecting it with an off-kilter approach to sound design that subtly makes for one of the most effective dj tools heard in recent memory. that track in question is kohisikarubeki, and its remix by rhythm & soul takes those intricately carved shards of sound design and smooths them into a more conventional house music shape. the b-side finds shintaro.d turning out more of that subversive, future-minded deep house business, with waganamidakana being a clear highlight.

having first linked up with london-based coyote records in early 2015, grade 10’s forever returns to the label proper for his first full ep project, hymn which explores the myriad sounds, layers and textures that have come to define his music.
the delicate, slow-burning cinema of widescreen opener gweilo, the shadowy eeriness of hymn and the crunchy, industrial club heat of swamped each point to different reference points, but all feel interlinked by forever’s grip on atmosphere and tone.

escorting sarah, a diy techno project that explores musical desires through the fetish of wax and the lust of hardware, return for a second instalment. kicking off with ‘video shop’, cavernous drums and discordant vocal shards rip throughout whilst ‘curb crawler’ is , a heady wall of sound that delves deep with a serious punch. ‘hotline’ rounds things off with a laser guided assault on the senses.

the second outing from btg follows, in tradition, their 2 originals and 2 remixes format. this time round toyc creates a slower paced dance floor obliterator titled ‘kicks’ sounding like a wonky laser gun trapped inside a broken 808 landing somewhere between broken techno and bass. on the remix project mooncircle and 20/20 ldn affiliated deft deconstructs and reconstructs toyc’s track into a maximalist beast fusing the current sounds of 160 bpm 170 bpm and half­time dnb with the technical precision of amon tobin. up next the booty­shaking stormer they call itoa, known for releases on bad taste and being featured in storming 160­/170bpm sets by djs and tastemakers such as om unit and sam binga. ‘snake pass’ is a classic itoa track, playful bouncing subs and flickering percussion and shards of vocal, landing somewhere between footwork and booty bass. btg co­founder etch sets the pace with his remix of snake pass, coming through with a schizophrenic beats influenced sub heavy stepper that slowly evolves into a breakbeat onslaught.
