bliq continues its quest to mine the deepest shades of techno with this release from iakovos, who had previously appeared on the label as lowjac and in the formidable duo deemonlover. this is sharply focused mind music layered with subtle detail and rich textures perfectly honed for hazy hours at the far reaches of the party. -singers- melds hypnotic pads with gossamer-light threads of breakbeat and warm synth pulses, while -evil flower- pushes a tougher rhythmic agenda without losing the ethereal atmosphere. -adidas people- rides on a surging kick drum pattern, but leaves ample room for a distant drone, and then -hackney tower- heads into edgier territory with all manner of obtuse angles and unnerving sound effects pivoting around the insistent drum core of the track.

a teacher by trade, dr mary sullivan bain recorded her musical works to be used as an educational and motivational tool in the miami-dade public school system she taught in. the single was recorded at miami sound recordings, south florida and released in small numbers as a self-published 12 pressing for educational purposes. copies of ‘do you know black history did not circulate much further than floridas public school libraries and the vaults of some local radio stations when it was released in 1985. produced with no label constraints, mary worked alongside her friend and vocalist herman attaway. she would give him the words and the melody and together they translated her ideas into song. if one wanted to categorise it theyd have to put a copy in a few different boxes … 808s, bass synths, deep chords, live percussion and effects dubbed into the mix. the production leans towards the electronic diy framework that informed the local sound on the south side. whilst the categories are blurred whats clear is that the musicians who made this thought outside of the box.

design default makes a contemplative debut lp blending ambient soundscapes with electronica & jazz hints. entitled dawn chorus, the record sounds like a reflexion on awakening to new feelings and ideas as well as reminiscing and looking at those that came in the past. the lp opens in a playful and harmonious way with bells play, bringing forward the idea of awakening. the rest of the record designs a world in which slow unfurling soundscapes with heavy bass like the forest or two mirrors consistently stand alongside glitchy atmospheres like the distorted ecce or the celestial escale. tracks like peaks and notes or wood caving put the accent on harmonic and textural content. overall, the record is rooted in a cosmic almost new age ambient tradition, but focuses more on the idea of renewal than vagrancy and languishing. if ecstasy and euphory do not describe the feeling here, darkness doesnt either. the result is a balanced, mature and diverse lp, bringing many beautiful sonic atmospheres to life, and telling a journey of wonder of openness.

the son of a radio dj who introduced him to the world of record collecting, harris grew up with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum line, to the jazz studies program at virginia commonwealth university. he also continued working with other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. his development as a producer at first, without a computer or sampler came first learning to replay samples on the drums, piano, bass or guitar. dj harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the richmond scene thats as diverse and nonexclusive as they come. among rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to collaborate with. he lives and works in jellowstone, a house turned recording compound occupied by his band mates in butcher brown, a garage punk jazz funk group.

the superb forbidden planet is a shiny early electro cut with a great funk bass line, a real instrumental groove and fantastic melodies that shimmer like a hot sun. it s filled with joy and sounds as fresh today as ever, the way it ducks and dives and offers real warmth. the francisco remix keeps the funk vibe but changes the groove to be a more chicago house style cut. as such it has a rasping bassline, big drums and coarse percussion that make you want to jack. the masterful ali renault—a go-to disco and synth specialist who runs cyber dance records, human shield record company and most recently his own vivod imprint—then turns out a hypnotic version that is more driven and direct for the dance floor, with robotic bass and epic reflective synth lines. it s a cinematic track with great analogue textures that goes back to the future. the last original is the excellent stay with me , a cosmic love song with breezy trumpets and dreamy disco vibes as well as soulful vocals. italo melodies and infectious percussion finish it off and make it an instant crowd pleaser.

frío y vacío is a band based in méxico city, formed in 2015 by the prolific angel kauff (vocals, guitar, synths, drum machine) and jon gil (bass, drum machine). angel also created his more synth orientated stockhaussen and isotropía projects, jon is also half of the identik fact project, the other half being his twin brother jeremy key who in turn is the guest vocalist in frío y vacío s song autodestrucción . what frío y vacío do is a reflection of their name, meaning cold and void . they have been influenced by different music genres, from post-punk and goth rock to cold wave and synth punk, all with a classic 80s sound. the lyrics are a consequence of kauff s personal experiences and feelings. the music, a maelstrom of fast rhythms, sharp guitars, thumping baselines, everything to create an oppressive atmosphere, charged with a high load of electrostatic power that is released in almost every song. pure, dark energy. note: limited to 265 hand numbered copies - comes with download code and lyrics insert

scientists. white lab coats. the whirr of computers. sc-164 was a sonic experiment. greg schappert, an electronic musician known as donor, was the willing subject. its purpose? to melt man and computer in audio form, machine music created by an artificial being. but soon it became too powerful, self aware. the creators tried to pull the plug. they were too late. now this assailant floats from machine to machine, communicating its message through serrated snares and bruising bass. sc-164 was cast aside by its makers. now the project has one objective, to corrupt circuitboards and speakers with an infectious strain of corrosive electro.
