torn is a new face to the samurai camp and our first signing from russia. a st petersburg native, torn has been developing over recent years into one of the most interesting producers in the half step community with his tracks featuring heavily in the sets of many of the scenes most prominent dj’s including homemade weapons, loxy, clarity & presha.
the grethen ep is a gateway to the torn sound. ‘stagnation’ is the most traditional drum and bass of the ep with it’s bouncing, grunting lurch. ’grethen’ goes down low and deep, while ‘self reflection’ is the tune bound to populate many dj sets with it’s tribal percussion. ‘insomnia’ ups the intensity with frantic, restless energy to close the ep. more torn music to come on samurai later in 2017.

second circle returns with their first release of 2016, this time with an ep from australian producer tornado wallace aka lewie day. . following up on releases for the likes of beats in space, esp institute and delusions of grandeur, wallace takes a step to the left with his first record made in his new home of berlin. recorded earlier this year, the release presents a trio of oddball house excursions which are at times deeply spatial and hypnotic and at other moments heavily percussive and almost tribal.

ritornell’s richard eigner & abby lee tee originally teamed up to provide the score for a collaboration with filmmaker andreea sasaran and illustrator katja seifert entitled »melting sphere«. sharing a passion for the combination of filigree electronics with playful timbres of diverse acoustic instruments and odd utensils, the cooperation of the two producers was a logical choice.
»melting sphere« merges subsonic bass, kalimba rhythms, accordion sounds and toy bells, all framed by eavesdropping recordings of abby lee tee’s cat, bathroom squeaks for five minutes of organic downbeat bliss.
»tired dancers« on the flipside offers a melancholy tale of seduction relayed from the shadows, with field recordings of nightly city noise, a reversed music box melody, hypnotic chords and meticulous percussion. delicate, celestial cello (by lukas lauermann) and contrabass flute emerge as counterpoint to this rhythmic hypnosis.
this record is as shimmering as you would expect.

valcrond video, the label of brooklyn-based visual artist and producer luke wyatt presents its very first vinyl issue in the shape of two new tracks from torn hawk, one of wyatts aliases. first coming to the fore in a musical sense with a set of distressed guitar and asphalt beat attacks on the lies white label series, torn hawk has been closely associated with ron morellis label ever since with wyatt subsequently working with karen gwyer, secret circuit and willie burns. distancing himself a bit from the grime and grit some associate with his productions, the two new tracks have more in common with the more expansively voiced compositions on emotional response release teen hawk, or the cinematic melancholy of the untitled ep he released under the alias lossmaker. clearly wyatt is building towards housing all his musical instincts under one roof.

after his epic split with black deer, torn hawk comes back with a proper four track 12 inch, opening with an almost balearic/tropical, someone put something in my drink and i am melting house cut. trapdoor returns to wyatts skewed after school special add cali-speed freak bastard child drum machine/guitar lush not lushness. we get more end-titles on the b-side, as both songs could be the soundtracks for a night hanging in a parking lot drinking boxed wine and snorting ajax while auxilary police circle, threatening to harsh your mellow ... good times to say the least.

a melancholy tale of seduction relayed from the shadows, with smoky drums, a piano player stuck in perpetual motion and ethereal flutes combining with a dash of exotica. delicate, fractured vocals emerge as counterpoint to this rhythmic hypnosis. concocted by three graduates of the 2006 red bull music academy shortly after their departure from its olympian domain, the light was recorded in a series of separate sessions with andreya triana (known from her collaborations with flying lotus, mr.scruff and theo parrish) and richard eigner (ritornell, last critically acclaimed album golden solitude was released in early 2009 on karaoke kalk). some freak polished it off, blending richards beats and andreyas vocals with a soft layer of flute and a whole lot of tape delay. the result? an organic slow burner that sounds like a transmission from galaxies away.

dj miss torn belongs to best french female djanes. from cardiff to monaco she performs in all europe. specialized in punchy techno - london to chicago sounds, she also plays progressive house and minimale techno. she featured in famous magasine max in 2005 and played live on the mytic radio b.b.c. radio wales (uk). she was the 1rst female dj to perform in doha - qatar (arabian gulf). she now launches her criminal beat cartel together with davy schwarz - a welcome additional to respected labels like 50hz, nerven, jackstar and bass heavy music!
