deru aka benjamin wynn is an emmy award winning american composer and music producer. deru’s last record, 1979, dealt with individual human emotions. his new project, torn in two, zooms out and deals with human existence as a whole. it finds feelings of frustration, dissociation and anger, but from a high vantage that affords perspective and allows the project to include acceptance, beauty and tranquility. torn in two is set for release on october 19th via friends of friends (anenon, shlohmo, perera elsewhere). the music lives in evolving landscapes of violence and beauty, with compositions that shape-shift, flutter, and decimate one s sense of time and place. the album is a collection of microtonal pieces where the pitches were derived from acoustic instruments, and processed woodwind and brass recordings. both represented new directions for wynn, and the results are pieces that are more dynamic and full-spectrum than his previous body of work. they explode into walls of distortion and recede into quiet acoustics.
commonly found lurking around l.i.e.s., technicolour and w.t. records, florian kupfer has plenty of credentials in the noisier end of the hardware house and techno scene, so it makes perfect sense to find him sidling up to valcron video in collaborative moder with torn hawk. the results are predictably excellent, from the gnarled emotional wrangles of -fake blood to the blown out ambience of hungry for candy. sweet tooth comes on like a dishevelled club workout, and then manipulation rounds the record off with a tongue in cheek spoken word and ambience piece that packs some serious music underneath the irreverent chit chat.
shiro is the samurai music offshoot created specifically for emerging artists first solo release on vinyl.
torn is a new face to the samurai camp and our first signing from russia. a st petersburg native, torn has been developing over recent years into one of the most interesting producers in the half step community with his tracks featuring heavily in the sets of many of the scenes most prominent dj’s including homemade weapons, loxy, clarity & presha.
the grethen ep is a gateway to the torn sound. ‘stagnation’ is the most traditional drum and bass of the ep with it’s bouncing, grunting lurch. ’grethen’ goes down low and deep, while ‘self reflection’ is the tune bound to populate many dj sets with it’s tribal percussion. ‘insomnia’ ups the intensity with frantic, restless energy to close the ep. more torn music to come on samurai later in 2017.
valcrond video, the label of brooklyn-based visual artist and producer luke wyatt presents its very first vinyl issue in the shape of two new tracks from torn hawk, one of wyatts aliases. first coming to the fore in a musical sense with a set of distressed guitar and asphalt beat attacks on the lies white label series, torn hawk has been closely associated with ron morellis label ever since with wyatt subsequently working with karen gwyer, secret circuit and willie burns. distancing himself a bit from the grime and grit some associate with his productions, the two new tracks have more in common with the more expansively voiced compositions on emotional response release teen hawk, or the cinematic melancholy of the untitled ep he released under the alias lossmaker. clearly wyatt is building towards housing all his musical instincts under one roof.
after his epic split with black deer, torn hawk comes back with a proper four track 12 inch, opening with an almost balearic/tropical, someone put something in my drink and i am melting house cut. trapdoor returns to wyatts skewed after school special add cali-speed freak bastard child drum machine/guitar lush not lushness. we get more end-titles on the b-side, as both songs could be the soundtracks for a night hanging in a parking lot drinking boxed wine and snorting ajax while auxilary police circle, threatening to harsh your mellow ... good times to say the least.
super-limited exclusive three track vinyl sampler ep from the upcoming l.i.e.s. >american noise< 2xcd compilation! this sampler expands upon three completely styles reflective of the diverse l.i.e.s. catalog to date. torn hawk pulverizing the entire a-side with his most unclassifiable material to date, marcos cabral returning to the label with a sinister 110 bpm techno track, and delroy edwards doing a blown-out barneys workout. a strong finish to the year.

THE ATMOSPHERIAN (CARPENTARIA & TORNADO WALLACE REMIXES)
12" Vinyl UK29.08.17
lovefingers heard the atmospherian years ago on milk beach settlers, a promo-only mix cd comprised solely of australian artists, mixed and released by seminal melbourne dj duo and good friends hey convict! (tamas jones & jason evans). tamas explained that warp factor 9 was a one-off project by john and russell kilby of esoteric post-rock bands the crystal set and bhagavad guitars respectively, and who are brothers of steve kilby (frontman of the church, a prolific australian band we’ve adored since adolescence). we had an immediate epiphany and this project was set into motion
vast and cinematic. inigo kennedys refined, courageous sound continues to be a definitive element of tokens output. after the ncg ep and surrender / castles in the air as his ongoing successes for the label in 2016, kennedy is back with a 3-trackep for token 74.
painter and electronic music producer noha marks nilla with his refined four tracker magic. the nabuco labelboss deep driven percussive style dominates this time too. the technically stunning and musically engaging eterno ritorno is a sweet spot for dub and house fanatics, and it certifies unquesationable success on dancefloors. get it and enjoy
the eye of the storm welcome to tornado wallaces debut album! the accumulation of about four years of work, with tracks written in berlin and melbourne, lonely planet is nothing like you may have expected from the australian expat. no stranger to fans and followers of esp institute, beats in space and music from memorys sister label second circle, tornado wallaces strain of releases so far merged functionality with a musical playfulness that led him to find himself as one of the producers behind josé padillas international feel album.
originally released in 1983 on the famous cam records for the obscure vietnam movie tornado (antoni margheriti), this highly sought-after soundtrack finally gets the official re-issue treatment it deserves! a very diverse lp with productions that range from classic soundtrack and horror to italo disco and pop... and even a featuring of the late toots thielemans. limited pressing!
second circle returns with their first release of 2016, this time with an ep from australian producer tornado wallace aka lewie day. . following up on releases for the likes of beats in space, esp institute and delusions of grandeur, wallace takes a step to the left with his first record made in his new home of berlin. recorded earlier this year, the release presents a trio of oddball house excursions which are at times deeply spatial and hypnotic and at other moments heavily percussive and almost tribal.
ritornell’s richard eigner & abby lee tee originally teamed up to provide the score for a collaboration with filmmaker andreea sasaran and illustrator katja seifert entitled »melting sphere«. sharing a passion for the combination of filigree electronics with playful timbres of diverse acoustic instruments and odd utensils, the cooperation of the two producers was a logical choice.
»melting sphere« merges subsonic bass, kalimba rhythms, accordion sounds and toy bells, all framed by eavesdropping recordings of abby lee tee’s cat, bathroom squeaks for five minutes of organic downbeat bliss.
»tired dancers« on the flipside offers a melancholy tale of seduction relayed from the shadows, with field recordings of nightly city noise, a reversed music box melody, hypnotic chords and meticulous percussion. delicate, celestial cello (by lukas lauermann) and contrabass flute emerge as counterpoint to this rhythmic hypnosis.
this record is as shimmering as you would expect.
