la rioja in spain may not be thought of as a hotbed of avant garde techno and electronica, but psychoskunk has been quietly issuing an uncompromising salvo of proudly underground releases since as far back as 2004. error etica, an alias from label boss victor martinez, is at the controls for this tenth vinyl release on the label, and he s sounding as proudly left of centre as ever. diatonic scale locks into an insistent groove, but the real magic of the track lies in the grubby notes punching their way around the drums, capped off with artful distortion that gives a wonderful bite to the production. tetratonic scale keeps things fuzzy but blows the rhythms wide open for a more poised, patient kind of techno incantation. r2pis remix of the track meanwhile clamps it back in order with a stern beat and a slow-release minimalism guiding the evolution of the track.

solar phenomena continues a high quality and high rate of releases after eps from the likes of stl and fluxion with a new one from mystica tribe - the musical alias of tokyo-based producer, taka noda. here he draws on everything from dub, soul, bass music, rhythm and blues and will always freak you out with his unusual sounds.
this excellently absorbing ep starts with “love is all right”, a fusion of asian percussion and reggae drums that is high tempo and funky. the bright steelpan sounds offset the razor sharp percussion and make for a sunny dub that will get any crowd going. the same fusion vibes continues but in more blissed out and slow motion fashion on “lawn track”, the beautiful cosmic psyche-out that is “ash” and supple space journey that is “voyage” with its intoxicating melodies and loose, tumbling percussion. this is unusual but essential music from an exclusive talent.

"texas-based electronic music producer phillip washington aka cygnus was on bit of a hiatus since his phenomenal -cosmos- long play on fundamental records, released near the end of 2016. with this ep, titled -ne0 ge0-, he s breaking the silence and we re extremely happy to see it happening through barba imprint. the record consists of 4 cuts; -zone shifting-, -vertexing-, -ne0-ge0- and -astronoot- which all share common qualities of his previous work - deep, spacey, richly textured and really well crafted. -zone shifting- is what electro in 2018 should sound like. deep, emotional and futuristic but well grounded in the human condition through the vocal line which seems to haunt from the distance. -vertexing- is a slightly more paced, moodier affair with slow enveloping vangelis-esque synth lines bleeding all over traditional electro sounding beat. however, in this case that s exactly what s needed. title track, -ne0-ge0- is the first one on the flip side and the busiest one. creasing of multiple synth lines and pads is done in such an expertly elegant manner that you just can t resist but play it loud on a big soundsystem and see what it does to the dancefloor. and finally, record closes with -astronoot-, and as b2 tracks usually are - it s the deepest of them all, reserved for those heady moments when you need something to bring the magic to the next level."

poolside began as a recording project in a converted los angeles backyard pool house in early 2011, producing sunny tracks of subaquatic indie dance music in this makeshift recording studio. surfacing first in the form of a youtube video for the catchy track do you believe? poolside were soon gaining local and national attention, with djs like james murphy of lcd soundsystem, techno legend derrick may, and disco don todd terje spinning these tracks at events and a growing online following. throughout 2011 poolside continued making waves with a sound called daytime disco through tracks like their cover of neil youngs harvest moon and original tunes. in 2012 poolside worked on a remix for longtime disco punks the rapture and held fans over with a new single and video for a song called slow down as they prepared to release their debut album. that album, pacific standard time, was self-released in july of 2012. after the albums release, remixes for artists like matthew dear, little dragon and fools gold soon followed, as well as rehearsing and touring with a live band and doing dj sets around the world. as thoughts turned to a second album, poolside went on ice for a year to regroup, beginning to work in earnest on another album in the fall of 2016. while still revolving around the sunny, laid-back disco sound of pst, these sessions yielded the additions of up-tempo dance songs and more guitars, and generally more fleshed-out arrangements. poolside surprise released their second album heat in 2017. poolside have over 1.5 million monthly listeners on spotify and have fans all over the world. they are currently on tour as a live band.

phonica records welcomes spanish producer extraordinaire pional to it’s main label with the ‘xme / one night stand’ 12”. pional is miguel barros and the madrid based musician has been producing for over a decade. with a string of well received solo releases on hivern discs, permanent vacation, young turks and counter, remixing the likes of the xx, chairlift, the rapture, prins thomas and john talabot (who he also co-wrote the incredible ‘fin’ album ender ‘so will be now...’ with) as well as djing around the world, pional has been keeping very busy indeed. for his phonica release he has produced two versions of two very special tracks. on the a-side, ‘xme’ is a melancholic and uplifting electronic excursion with delicate flourishes of it’s synthesised melody becoming a real ear-worm throughout its six and a half minutes. the slower and more foreboding ‘quiet ceremony’ reinterpretation takes the same melody in a darker direction. on the other side, ‘one night stand’ is a bumping, stripped back and moody club track with ghostly vocals floating above metallic pads rising to a release of energy and emotion. the ‘slow drumapella’ lowers the tempo and alters the feel of the track, reducing its elements to a bare-bones drum track with the vocal, fx and pads eventually coming to the fore.

two words is the debut release from the duo of canadian sound artist crys cole and australian songwriter francis plagne. building on a series of experimental live performances in which the pair toyed with possible common languages for their seemingly unrelated approaches to music, the lp’s two sides present a single piece that brings together abstract texture and slow-motion song in a sonic space where genre cedes to the logic of dreams.

veteran nyc producer and dfa regular juan maclean hops on the rnt wagon for a rolling ep of drum-machine driven grooves for the reserve sub-imprint. the record starts with the peak-time stomper fine time, building exquisite tension and release through looped and filtered samples, and then moves on to the boogie-infused swing of dont stop for nothing. everybody clap leads off side b with a soulful and string-laden vocal over a bouncing hi-hat-focused house arrangement, and the ep closes out on the dubbier tip with the eponymous panic in fort greene park, a synthy and smooth slow burner. all around beautifully produced and eminently playable, señor maclean has made himself a most welcome addition to the razor-n-tape family with this dynamic ep

“the spiral” is frederikke hoffmeiers third solo lp for posh isolation under her puce mary moniker, and follows where last year’s critically acclaimed “persona” left off. working more precisely than ever, “the spiral” binds the listener in a tight web of sharp synthesizers, hammering percussion, obscured vocals, field recordings, and blistering noise. puce mary manages to at once honour the history of industrial music and noise, as well as transform it.

crs ltd 005, -gray fox- is the first ep from the polish producer michal jablonski on vsk s label, following the last ep from the duo scalameriya and vsk himself. -find god- opens the release with an organic broken beat , which meet an evil cinematic voice. -post human being- is the hypnotic element of the release with a dark tribal groove. -gray fox- has a strong 4/4 kickdrum combined to a sound design high frequency scream. -phantom pain- is a madness slow beat rhythm with outstanding soundscape layers. crs ltd is really glad to welcome this amazing talent on the label.

legalize lambada step up for their 4th outing with four delectable afro disco edits from sputnik. ‘superlove see s sputnik channel a south-african take on early garage house before melting feeling fine , the reggae tinged, afro boogie gem. on the flip side, groove me unearths some feel good cameroonian disco gold complete with killer guitar solo, whilst rick closes out the e.p. dropping the tempo for a synth soul, slow jam. with early support from hunee, lexx and the likes, leg004 is shaping up to be one of the summers standouts.

patricia koketts sound is shrouded in a veil of mysticism. the brainchild of lithuanian gediminas jakubka, diabel’s metallic heartbeat underlies a magical superstructure that evokes some kind of dmt infused trip. or possibly even some kind of ancient ritual, where one is intoxicated by serpents blood. guided by repetitive drum patterns, it creates a slow joint dance that opens the path towards transcendence.

cong burn continues to exercise one of the most promising instincts for future-minded music on this, their third release. it s surprising they haven t done more previously, considering the maturity of their curation, but either way the quality remains at an all time high here, leading in with some light and liquefied 4/4 sonics from chekov before pirouetting into one of duckett s illustrious abstractions around the techno blueprint. label regular lack is back on side b with the stern and punchy -track 3,- and then haddon finishes the record off with -anabiosis,- a densely textured, slow creeping trip of a track.

originally released in 2015 on cassette by g.e.d. soul records. now for the first time on 1lp vinyl on kingunderground, remastered and limited to 500 copies. the album is a collection of delightfully smoked out, library inspired instrumentals. following in the footsteps of their highly enjoyable 2011 debut. “return of” combines many shades of many moods into a tight record that finds a nice balance between strange hype arrangements and super chill ‘couch-lock’ inducing slow jams. it embarks on a cinematic soul journey from the opening note, through the interlude, straight to the closing credits.

when it comes to deep and soulful inspired house grooves with a touch of sweat and grit we like so much, few comes close to soulphiction. this four track ep got that and more. ear-grabbing opening track bizzness starts things off in classic soulphiction mode with its deliciously bass-heavy funk stomp. cart people is a fine slice of deep house going deeper and deeper as the groove develops. the first track on the flip, slow glow , brings warm vibes and great melodies together in a clever way. finally sweet dreams is another fine example of house music that is deep, full of soul and comfortingly loose, mr fingers style but done the soulphiction way.

seriously dope 4 track disco edits ep. first up is jaz. the south carolina native is at the top of the disco edits game, with records out on universal cave, rotating souls, and passport to paradise. “the end�” is a 90bpm monster. easily suited for lovers of balearic, one of those rare slow tracks that can really rock a dance floor. the patchouli brothers are up and comers from toronto, with a 12” on basic fingers, “cheat, lie, kill, die�” is a mid tempo stomper. a versatile track easily blended with disco or house, and a hook so catchy, crowds are singing along before the end of the track. will martin opens up the b-side with pure fire. “rock me again” is the transformation of a 2 minute james brown production into 7 and a half minutes of dance floor ecstasy. martin is known for lo-fi house, with releases on 2mr, dolly, argot, and supply records. studebaker hawk closes us out with the b-boy jam, “say africa”. breaks for days, and even a heavy guitar solo. this track is for lovers of deep disco, classic hip hop, and afrobeat. limited run so don t sleep on this one!

is it balearic? welcome the mellow charms of chris coco and camillo miranda to lay down an unusual paean to a prehistoric love with the truly breezy drifter dinosaur baby. while the tale might be a quirky one, the music is the real deal, all tumbling percussion locked into a slow, head-nodding groove, and this comes through even stronger on the 12inch dub. on the flip, rune lindbaek delivers a remix that fleshes the original out with laconic disco flourihes, and then luke solomons version injects a little housey energy into the make up with his usual flair for off-kilter party fuel.

exactly one year after their sold-out debut album zest, die orangen (aka dreems & kris baha) are zurück! malka tuti and die orangen have concocted a double dish, a two part remix package, saft 1 & saft 2. the first part consists of a new live version of the track yaranabe, recorded in a live session as part of the duo’s infamous analogue live act. a2 is tapan’s remix of metal man. the poem-not-poem is taking shape as a low bpm banger when tapan’s heavy signature kick meets those trippy vocals. this is tapan’s first track to be made after finishing their debut album last year on mt, and its an interesting evolution of their sound, slow dark and punchy, yet with these vocals and bassline, also a catchy post-pop track for the later hours. on the b-side lies gordon pohl’s reimagination of mersey river (aka “the platypus track”). the tracks “epic-, long slow ambient opening and evolution into rhythm resembles in many ways the psychedelic collaboration works of the late pete namlook & move d on namlooks own fax records, which was always a significant influence on the malka tuti world.

laura jones returns for another ep outing on her label. despite weighing in with an incendiary first release that found mandar s sam remixing infuse s karousel and a follow up from jones that included one of the sadly departed trevino s final remixes, the label took a backseat to the birth of her daugter in 2017. a year on however and the pace has picked up with an ep from renowned modular wizzard kamran sadeghi at the start of the year and this latest ep from the label boss. the two originals are a snapshot of her evolving style. pathway places skippy beats and sub heavy kicks under a soaring chord sequence, abstract vocal samples and ethereal pad riff. tough crowd takes a moodier approach with a menacing sub bass and drum arrangement, bubbling filters building to a hook that unfolds halfway through to create a moment of formidable intensity. lee renacre s recent revival of his 100 hz alias courtesy of well received outings on slow life and bosconi among others, has found the producer on career-best form and he turns in a sublime remix that makes deft use of delicate top lines and bubbling oscillators to create a powerfully heady atmosphere.

having worked together as -thrinax- in the past, prague s duo exhausted modern & aliver collected their solo material for endless illusion s second white label series. their complimentary sonic languages speak in slow, percussive rhythms, sadistic, industrial sounds, and uptight bass lines transmitted through a chain of pedal effects. the track -project germs - cuatone- is another one of aliver s collaborations.

you got the stuff is not lovely day - that much is true. this ones a wigged out, extended, trip into deep space from 1978 that is truly baffling. of course, it features bill singing for the first half of the track but then all of a sudden we re launched into a cosmic wormhole as everything just falls back and the track is stripped of any earthly qualities. people find themselves asking this, this is bill withers? as lazer guided synths and rock solid drums pull us into the sonic vortex. truly amazing. obviously a nugget like this has not gone unnoticed and has been edited and chopped and sampled deftly by the more sarcastic, left-field oriented crate diggers out there but it has never been reissued legitimately - until now! a hugely sought after and collectible gem right here, backed with the wistful slow jam look to each other for love as per the original 1978 columbia promo 12inch version. this left-field, cosmic classic has been legally reissued by above board distribution in conjunction with the legal rights holders sony music entertainment. this high quality repress features original columbia pink label disco 12inch artwork and has been remastered from sonys original sources by optimum mastering, bristol uk.
