the latest release on francis harris scissor & thread label out of brooklyn is another exercise in deep and meditative atmospheres. the label, comprised of a tight knit collective of multi-faceted composers, vocalists and instrumentalists, always strives to develop new projects based on a shared aesthetic, and this five track ep is both boundary pushing and fully synchronized with the labels approach. with melquiades blue caves melbourne based composer and sound designer alexander albrecht presents his solo debut ep following on from the tidal river album he released as part of the albrecht la’brooy duo. the title track blue caves is a skittering, weightless exploration of space, seemingly built around lush field recordings and fragments of melody developing out of the ether. avlemonas flows from a similar source, but crystallizes around an off kilter rhythm and occasional subby bass, balanced against swooping pads and piano motifs. morning breeze seems to revel in the evocative nature of its title, with hand played percussion backing more wistful, emotive piano sketches and wandering bass notes, before the track settles into a hypnotic groove. label head francis harris provides another take on the track for his re-form version, a more dancefloor aimed excursion that draws deeply from the classic deep house of the new york and detroit masters. ending the relases is patio, which drifts back towards the ambient territories of the opening tracks, with exquisite, understated instrumentation and a melancholic yet elated vibe.

milos arrives with his fifth release on his receptive visions label. two techno cuts with plenty of energy and emotion, aimed directly for the dance floor. contact high with it’s swirling sounds, moving in and out of this rather tasty techno groove. priming on the other side has solid drums with rave style stabs, that adds a different feel to this vinyl only release.

moss co. kicks off 2018 with the indivisual ep from the supremely talented mariano mateljan. mariano and label boss, archie hamilton have been talking about an ep on moss co. for a number or years, and it is a tribute to both of their perfectionism that it finally lands in all good stores april 6th. made in his home studio in split, the record came together from several analogue jam sessions. aimed squarely at the small hours, the deeply trippy and haunting tracks take influence from the micro house of the 90 labels like cabinet and perlon and producers like schatrax and matthew johnson. the record is a fine example of marianos ever-maturing sound timeless minimalistic house music that will cast a spell over dance floors the world over.

following our first release with opal, which aimed at the dance and the bodies, we wanted with this second ep to reach to people’s mind. as a geneva-based techno label, it was fundamental to work with our local hero: opuswerk. he’s already been working outside of the country with artists like francois x and labels such as arts, semantica or dement3d. it was time we involved him in our project. through this ep, opuswerk clearly shows what he knows and does best. much like his dj sets, he connects dots and layers in unexpected ways, like a rhizome connecting different multiplicities. inspiration for the original tracks came from designing systems of independent yet connected sounds, where events are triggered, un-triggered and alter other events, each behaving on their own. as one of those elements, the artist acts as a guide, directing them from one place to the next acting as and with the machines. the -mot d’ordre- is about becoming one of the machines, blending techniques with vibes and catching them like ever escaping dreams. the result is two uniquely sounding spaces, either filled with raw energy like on extensum or with subtle and serene ever-evolving bleeps on spatium. those two extremes are fitting to how we want present the multiple dimensions of our artists works to the world. the same logic went into choosing the remixers, with whom opuswerk had a human connection with. inland and antigone need no introductions, having both established their sound on labels like countercharge or token. each brought their own re-interpretations of the original tracks bringing them closer to the dancefloors.

prolific producer mathis mootz is very well known within the drum/bass and hardcore techno arenas as being one of the innovative pioneers to merge both genres with an unique approach. his contribution to the electronic music community is not limited to his explorations within only the drum and bass and hardcore genres, mathis also has various experimental projects, most noteworthy being his m2 ( squaremeter ) project with releases on mille pleateux, ant-zen and hands productions. the sound of m2 is defined as a combination of micro sound and industrial soundscapes. the panacea is no stranger to the world of techno as some may suspect, his command of the position chrome record label came from his close relationship with force inc. music works which was one of the earliest german record labels to fuel the underground techno/rave scenes in the early 90’s. since position chrome came under his guidance in 1997 it has become one of the most important labels in electronic music due to it’s integrity and an impressive release of quality music for it’s genre. more recently, he has been investigating the techno landscape with david frisch together known as new frames, their latest release on hands productions is essential for those interested in contemporary electronic music of the dark techno/industrial kind. “ above the absolute “ is a 12’’ of mercenary techno produced with expert skill. the opening track “ above the absolute 96 “ is pure sound wave balance with all the components for what is sure to light any dance floor on fire. “ most basic resolution “ is a dark, mood shifting, hard acid techno reminder of what it means to create music for warehouses, pure old school for the hardcore. “ overdrive ee “ continues in a more contemporary direction and demonstrates a mastery of percussive elements in tune with the kind of atmosphere that brings people together in the dark. the final track “ walter “ goes back into the future with a track aimed at the headstrong, an exceptional closing chapter that hits dead centre on the search of the perfect beat. an overall completely impressive work from an artist who has set no limitations for himself.

the fourth release on trevor jacksons pre- label is by skull. a visceral journey into experimental noise and no wave avant grade beatscapes the last skull release snapz appeared on jacksons own output recordings label in 1999. a seminal collection of tracks that had previously featured on the first two legendary mo wax headz compilations (also featuring autechre, beastie boys, air, and dj shadow) as well as tracks that had also appeared on kevin the bug martins notorious macro dub infection albums during the mid 90s. reactionary sonic statements aimed at the coffee table world of trip hop, fuelled by his dissatisfaction and dissillustionment with hip hop of the time, trevor pushed himself into uncomfortable and far more extreme areas than he had before, areas he felt unable to explore with his underdog productions, which were mainly being utilised for major label remixes at the time. influenced as much by the industrial pioneers, post punk and new wave of the past as the burgeoning post rock scene in the mid 90s, this new set of previously unreleased recordings originally produced between 1996-2000 are equally as intense and visceral as the early releases. dusty samples, raw beats, tape loops, and primitive effects combine to sound as relevant now as when they were initially created.

optimo music don’t generally do limited edition releases but when the golden filter did these extra mixes of “end of times”, the a1 track off their recent ep we thought they were too good to remain in the digital domain so have pressed up a small run of 12” singles aimed specifically at djs. the original single version is a future synth classic. these new dub versions take it to the dancefloor and have been tried and tested around the world over the last few months. they are considerably extended, dubbed out and add extra dynamics & ecstatic synth power with hints of the original vocal. there is a slo mo version at 103 bpm and a faster version at 118bpm which means the track should work any time from warm up to peak set. there is also a drone-apella version included too.

following a series of standout releases on stateside imprint, astral plane, e.m.m.a returns to coyote records for the first time proper with new 12-, mindmaze / pumpkin emoji . having first provided a remix on spokes inaugural ep ( green eyes ) for the label back in 2015, e.m.m.a has since kick-started her angel food radio show on nts alongside aimee cliff, and also established producer girls — a nationwide workshop initiative aimed at helping aspiring women get into music production. on mindmaze , described by e.m.m.a. herself as medieval funky and originally made as a special for mumdance on rinse fm, she pokes fun at the club, going in sample-heavy and re-fixing anthemic windows 95-era melodies over a stampeding, heavyset 4x4 beat. -this tune is a homage to the encarta 95 cd rom-, she explains. on the flip meanwhile, pumpkin emoji references the glossy, crystalline textures and lo-slung 808 bass of early e.m.m.a. gems like 2014 s light years , a potent reminder of why she remains one of the uk s most innovative and quietly rebellious club producers. tracklist: 1. mindmaze, 2. pumpkin emoji.

following a double dose of newfound los angeles talent, apron records founder, steven julien (aka funkineven) returns home with the debut release from london-based enigma, molinaro. apron 35 is classic apron records material five slabs of soul-drenched techno anchored by groove and grit from a new name with plenty of experience. molinaro who has honed his production and djing craft for over a decade is one of the capital s best technicians behind the decks. a skill most recently recognised by nts radio, who rewarded him with a regular monthly slot on the airwaves. the first of which shot straight into the nts picks for the week. opener gio cements the tone from the off, drifting in with warm, enveloping pads, quickly joined by beefy drums and percussion in a five-minute sprawl out. jtl is arguably the standout a boogie-influenced roller aimed at prime time dancefloor. ty and -molow showcase the deeper, moodier face of molinaros sound palette before the beatless sofar rounds things out, paying homage to ryuichi sakamotos synth brilliance.

fouk might have been curating outplay since 2013, but their butterfunk ep is in fact the duos first proper ep on their own imprint. its not that theyve been resting on their laurels: they ve drip-fed a handful of eps on the likes of heist and house of disco over the past few years, and released solo efforts on kolour ltd and razor n tape that stormed the charts. it s been fascinating to see the dutch pair slowly break the mould, moving from heavy sampling in favour to an emphasis on original instrumentation and production. the butterfunk ep is fine showcase of their prowess in the studio, loaded to the hilt with contemporary dancefloor funk. things kick off with the rolling drums, off-beat percussion and seriously infectious hammond lines of organ freeman. title track butterfunk is aimed squarely at the hips with its smooth keys and perfectly placed vocal, while some acid lines give the track a little edge. flip over for the bumping wong way, a chunky workout with a rubber bassline. the finale of the ep is winter, a fantastic slice of 80s inspired downtempo mushroom jazz.

silent servant provides an always dark, always monotonous, always semi industrial and stripped down rework of color, a wonderful mixing tool. while kanding ray ads floating pads and flanging sequences taking the original form to cosmic new age territories. cassegrain focuses on the beat content of texture, making an almost strictly percussive workout aimed straight to the dancefloor.

the extended mixes single of phase fatale s debut full-length album on hospital productions takes three of the most dancefloor-ready songs from redeemer into abstracted, surreal and uncharted territory aimed for unlit, claustrophobic chambers. aided by silent servant with additional production, together hayden payne and juan mendez transform -order of severity,- -operate within,- and -spoken ashes- further down the machine. with more percussion and editing, they tear apart and lengthen the tracks through temporal space. the redeemer (extended mixes) 12- will be released simultaneously alongside the full-length album, adding yet another dimension into payne s own universe of the degenerated present.

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of ‘j deep’. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, ‘verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard’s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘lt’ in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

electronic music label sheik ‘n’ beik announces snbv012 the ‘vaadhoo’ ep from mr. dello. this ep is the second release in series aimed at celebrating the diversity and history of new york and its boroughs. as sheik ‘n’ beik’s hometown and source of constant inspiration. the label focuses the spotlight to pay homage to the five boroughs of new york including manhattan, queens, brooklyn, staten island and the bronx. each boroughs flag is given a modern and colorful twist via the cover art and design of each outer jacket. the first release in the series, manhattan, featured local nyc heroe and co-founder of voodoo down records, n’conduit.

for the third release on decoder recordings, filip xavi makes his debut to the label. the serbian producer and resident dj of the drugstore club in belgrade delivers four superb techno tracks. all of them are characterized by an obscure sound but directly aimed at the dance floor. the first track wd-4d is a powerful opening of the ep, with its successor aw-fl keeping pace nicely. the b side of this ep can t be ignored, as the opening track he-ap kicks off quite fierce. the final composition named d-ui is an excellent hypnotic dj tool.

milano producer turbojazz is back on gamm with food for cats vol.2 and this time he throws down fender rhodes fusion style with two full on jazz/latin/brazil-house assaults aimed straight for peak house jazz-dancin . both bara bara and the road is hard are full of tasty jazz samples (the heads will know whats up!) but are also equipped with additional production. and most importantly...they ll get u dancing !

dalmata daniel s next up is a collaboration with the bristol-born „weirdo disco guy- antoni maiovvi and also a contribution of heinrich dressel who is an unavoidable column of rome s electronic music scene. maiovvi s pleasure model project is all about youth – replaced by blade runner-esque replicas. his first release under this moniker was „kendo dynamics- on 100% silk in 2016. it aimed for presenting a persuasive world of fiber optic paranoia and technoid effacement. dd006 is the next level of the concept and the first time on vinyl. the tracks are driven by the characteristic haggard drum machine s sound on side a with a melancholic or dark synth themes what becomes a dreamy melody in the „prism riot- on side b. the remix by heinrich dressel is a turn back directly into the darkness, but it is faster and more like a film soundtrack with his own characteristics, of course. the whole ep has a strong vintage mood and sound. it can be said that update 1.1 is definitely dystopian, coming from the future of our past.

just over a year ago cassy embarked on her largest and most personal project yet, her debut solo album donna , released on revered imprint aus music. since then, cassy has put out a string of remixes on powerplant, turbo, echoe and watergate, plus a track on muna s latest va. throughout this period, cassy has also been in the studio working on new material, the first of which to be released in september, and is titled cassy 004 . as the title infers, cassy is reawakening her self-titled imprint she created in 2006, and has had three previous releases until now. with no plan or set schedule, the remit was simply to release her own records, when the time is right, and the quality is high. the music always reflected the quirkier side to cassy s club tastes. and 004 continue in this vein. it perfectly encapsulates the sleek and hypnotic sounds of the harder end of her dj sets. the tracks are titled one and two , with cassy giving one a reshape to round off a trio of cuts aimed at the dancefloor.

following the b-side of its third release, bror records presents the debut ep of gothenburg-based dj lily with a four track vinyl. the ep takes off where dj lily showed initial appearance with the contribution of “folia” on bror03. focussing on ambient and dark layers across effective beat programming, dj lily presents an alluring set of atmospheric and floor aimed techno interpretations.

following the blistering inaugural release from talker comes the second release on the standards & practices imprint from label co-founder jonathan -stave- krohn, who returns with 5 tracks of dark, visceral electronic music for the discerning listener. -black hills- and -tasc us- kick off the proceedings in fine style – pummeling drums underpinning harsh blasts of noise and bleak, greyscale atmospherics, while -in/human- and -b5- on the flip take a different approach – 2 tracks not aimed at the dancefloor, but both retaining that cold, claustrophobic feel that characterizes much of stave s work. the brooding and sinister -stave 17- closes the ep, moving into exciting new territory with an intensely cinematic sound.

the latest dig from best record italy s eternal mission to release the finest roman musical manna features noted jazz man pino presti taking on manu dibango s eternal party jam soul makossa. presti s interpretation uses oodles of gleaming 80s synths in place of the original traditional instrumentation, but fear not as the iconic brass section remains a real-world force, and sounds mighty fresh with it. following up that cover is a sumptuous version of aint no sunshine which is aimed square at the heartstrings of the most balearic cruisers. i call your name / come back to me gets even smoother, the vocals capturing mediterranean getaway romance to perfection

‘this is my chance’ lay dormant until the 90s, when it was included on the ace cd “the heart of southern soul vol 3”. that series was aimed at ballad fans but art gentry’s mid-tempo gem proved ideal for the modern soul dance scene. a 12-inch promo issued at the time is now an in-demand piece of vinyl. mystery surrounds who wrote shirley brown’s ‘even if the signs are wrong’ but this splendid, lilting soul song deserves a vinyl release.

karl meier, ken meier and jon krohn, aka stave, are launching a label called standards & practices.
the three us artists, who share chicago roots, have a pretty straightforward mission in mind for standards & practices: “to provide a platform for releases by both talker and stave, as well as for material by other like-minded artists and collaborators.” talker is the downwards-affiliated duo of karl meier—a longtime techno dj, now based in berlin, who took part in ra’s playing favourites series last year—and krohn, formerly of the experimental rock group male, who’s also been putting out his own brand of abstract, industrialized electronic music as stave for around four years. ken meier, a new york-based graphic designer, partner at common name and dj—and karl’s brother—takes care of art and design for the label.
standards & practices’ opening move is a talker 12-inch, battle standards, the duo’s third full release and first since their 2014 album for downwards. a three-track ep built with material from their new live set and “aimed squarely at the dance floor,” it includes a new version of “my favorite colour is gold,” from 2015’s the immortal eye compilation cd. it’s due out in late july. next will be black hills, a five-track ep from stave that’s expected in september.
along with the soon-to-launch label, the meier brothers recently rebooted their fear of music podcast with some new mixes, including two from karl.

topping off another slow year at assistance hq, mr assister channels some slightly darker shades for the second release on beam, aimed squarely in the vague direction of the dance floor. in masonic forest , a rabble of delirious bongos get blown off course, trudging endlessly through the tangled grounds of the grand lodge. down below on jordan , drums pound incessantly and chants echo from the murky distance, valiant but ultimately inert on their futile march to nowhere.
