the ep opens up with -plastic motion.- a techno track that is full of layers of subsonic pulsations. monolithically consuming the entire a-side. the sounds of the sirens are balanced against heavily stylized basslines moving in and out of the framework while bursts of white noise appear through the fog. creating a telekinetic hallucination. the b-side starts with the title track -confess.- a ruthless song that crushes together bass-heavy broken beat rhythms with straight-ahead kicks and snares. it s about to burst out of its seams any minute as psychedelic synths and buried vocals command it all to stay together.
the extended mixes single of phase fatale s debut full-length album on hospital productions takes three of the most dancefloor-ready songs from redeemer into abstracted. surreal and uncharted territory aimed for unlit. claustrophobic chambers. aided by silent servant with additional production. together hayden payne and juan mendez transform -order of severity.- -operate within.- and -spoken ashes- further down the machine. with more percussion and editing. they tear apart and lengthen the tracks through temporal space. the redeemer (extended mixes) 12- will be released simultaneously alongside the full-length album. adding yet another dimension into payne s own universe of the degenerated present.
phase fatale creates techno from disparate subcultures of dead industrial with a post-punk spirit. bringing back an immediacy and aggressive energy sorely missing in the contemporary electronic landscape.
with “redeemer.” the debut full length from phase fatale. conceived by dj and producer hayden payne in new york by way of berlin. deepens his exploration of the tension—both sonic and conceptual—begun on his eps released over the last three years on the jealous god and unterton labels. in intent and impact. phase fatale bears allegiance to the surreal influence of juan mendez aka silent servant. with whom payne has worked closely in collaboration.
TRISTI DI RABBIA (FEAT. PHASE FATALE AND UNHUMAN RMXS)
12" Vinyl D28.09.17
blacksilk proudly announces its third release. the second on vinyl. reissuing a selection of tracks from dsordne. experimental electronic band active in turin during the 80’s and early 90’s. thanks to the proactive and collaborative spirit of marco milanesio. band’s founder and author of most of the songs. deserved and proper attention is finally given to three stunning original masterpieces of dusky. heavily post-punk influenced tracks veined with some sort of industrial aftertaste. these songs have been selected from a span of works. mostly autoproduced. that dsordne released in the years of activity on various labels (primarily the related hax records) or fanzines of the thriving italian underground scene of the time. which provided the perfect environment to experiment while representing the dull. grey and nihilist reality of the already post-industrial turin of the mid-80’s. “tristi di rabbia” (sad of anger). title taken from the almost madrigalic song opening the record. is completed with the electronic punk of “love is my eversion” (that will meet the taste of fans of spk et similia) and “guardami”. melodic slow industrial gem. on the b side are featured two contemporary reworks of other original songs: “aria” remixed by phase fatale. gloomy dancefloor-friendly track that emphasises the vocal abstract games of the original bringing the song to a new rhythmic dimension. and “rimani”. remixed by the emerging artist unhuman. who deconstructs the dark ballad achieving the result of a brilliantly crafted lo-fi ebm banger. the artwork is curated by silent servant. that visually caged a picture from an unnamed orthodox icon taken at the national museum of art in bucharest reprocessing it in his own distinctive macabre-surrealist style. already appreciated in the numerous visual works for the jealous god’s catalogue and still delivering the shock of the new.
following on a trio of successes with established talent. for our fourth release manhigh takes an excursion to lesser-known regions with experimentalist desroi. previously known from eps on his eponymous imprint and total black the german newcomer quickly caught our attention. beginning with the opener. ‘indifferent’. we are introduced to his heavily sculpted. hypnotic sound world. where a rolling. repeating rhythmic framework is echoed in the higher registers with heavily-filtered delay loops. and a melodic lead line taken deeply into dub provides both a centerpiece and the basis for many other elements. another relatively new talent currently rising quickly to wider notice. phase fatale’s relaunch of ‘indifferent’ stays resolutely in his own world. a grinding. banging amalgamation of distortion. punishing in its resolve and propelled by mutated elements of the desroi’s original piece. his idea of ‘apathy’ invokes entirely more aggressive emotions than the word’s conventional usage. tightly winding bleeps around a rigid sequence kept in motion by constant effects and sporadic drum hits. which then transforms at is halfway point with the entrance of harder kicks driven by an open hat. ‘sopor’ induces trance states more than it does sleep. sophisticated applications of delay effects and patient acid combine for a deep. inward-looking hypnotic state with momentary shifts in rhythm and color evoking the ephemeral nature of dreams.

12" Vinyl D06.05.16
schwefelgelb is the electronic music project of sid & eddy. having carefully straddled the boundaries between techno. ebm and electro. the duo is entering 2016 with a 12” release on the new label incarnation of the berlin based fleisch collective. fleisch consists of a group of miscreants known for throwing some of the best curated dark underground dance parties in berlin. with a focus on sounds ranging from e.b.m.. new beat. acid to techno. the metamorphosis of fleisch into a label could not demand a more fitting debut than schwefelgelb’s newest sonic discharge. tight programming. catchy analog synth-bass coupled with well utilized & frenetic shouted vocals echo the golden age of electronic body music. a refreshing progression of sounds moves the style forward without being afflicted with the formulaic and hollow tendencies befallen similar attempts by others acts over the years.
the remixed tracks from ascetic’s second album ‘everything is becoming’ are a collision between industrial techno. ebm influenced bass lines. doom and dark ambient. four berlin based artists: ancient methods. phase fatale. unhuman & luna violenta offer their take on the two opening tracks ‘utterings’ and ‘exegesis’ from the album. roared vocals. guitar both jagged. creepy and ambient. live drums and samples are all melted down and reformed into at times recognizable and at times wholly alien compositions. ancient methods. phase fatale and unhuman offer different approaches to techno punishment while luna’s interpretation is a cacophonous build that explodes into sonic abstraction. this ep is a perfect example of what berlin does so well. where genres that share aesthetic values feedback. overlap and inspire.
back in print on vinyl and for the first time on drag city cds. damon & naomi with ghost is a sweet meeting of mind and soul featuring ghosts masaki batoh and michio kurihara in full collaboration with the titular hero and heroine. everybody brings their heaviest and lightest sounds and the album — a pre freak-folk freaky folk excursion — now meets us on the other side. all charms intact.
