recently, superpitcher was invited to go on a safari in south africa. he bought a custom made safari hat at his favorite milliner in cologne (ju&#776,,,rgen eifler) and set off with big eyes and a pair of binoculars. it was wild and wonderful and he saw many exotic (and big!) animals, even a leopard in a tree that told him the secret of the universe. he forgot what the leopard said because his mind was still playing and replaying the sound of what he heard on the first night of his arrival – the hypnotic and moving sound of the voices of africa, the voices of the wonderful tanda tula staff choir. there, the choir members work during the day at the camp and at night entertain the guests with their captivating voices and energetic dancing. so impressed was he with their songs and beautiful shangaan language that he decided to record a cd for them to sell in the shop at their camp and now this precious recording is also available through hippie dance / bush recordings on vinyl and cd for you in whatever wherever camp you are. the lp of the tanda tula choir comes with a very pretty poster.

swedish artist ubx127 is back on figure with what might just be his most accomplished release to date. spanning an arc cross four diverse tracks, the story told is abstract yet full of imagination. gently pulsating crystalline opener woid carefully sets a vast open scene, covered in gushes of interplanetary winds. first contact is made on a2, its electro-esque drive and spiky synths hinting at its alien origins. a taste of their mighty technology is given on watch out below, booming with a propulsive punch and constantly swelling in intensity. relief comes in form of singularity, a beautiful, long-winding closer, on which soothing arps effortlessly outweigh their beaty counterparts. having already proven his mastery of the machines with three stellar eps for the label last year, this record further showcases ubx127s special talent of crafting tunes that are as ripe with drama as they are ready for the floor.

for the 108th installment in the ever expanding planet rhythm catalog, a various artists effort has been planned with some of the label’s usuals and some exciting names we have had our eye on for a while now. for the a-side, arts label owner emmanual brings his much appreciated e100 to vinyl. previously released digitally through his own imprint, this cut has been sought after for a while now. second up is eindhoven native albert van abbe. albert has been making a lot of waves for a long time now and we’re very glad to welcome him to the prruk family. more to ignore 04 is a funked out piece of machine music that will definitely turn some heads. the b side is opening with elyas the hangman. the mysteryman that gained some infamy through his releases on modularz and olympian delivers a cutting edge techno work-out. closing down this va 12” is mendy. returning to prruk for the 2nd time, mendy has come up with elevation which is a chordy techno theme for peak hours.

the debut dub syndicate set from 1982, pre-dating the involvement of mainstay style scott. this features various members of creation rebel and african head charge turning out a wild dub set, with hard-hitting rhythms and fx-mutated melodies phasing in and out of the mix . recorded quickly with track titles cheekily poking fun at the contemporary series by the scientist which pitted him against various b-movie foes. the tunes themselves however are deadly serious, with version excursions on some classic on-u vocal cuts such as “bedward the flying preacher” and “across the red sea”, and a continuing commitment by producer adrian sherwood to take his love of reggae and filter it through his exploratory and uniquely english approach. re-cut at dubplates & mastering in berlin. includes download card with bonus track and sleevenotes by steve barker (on the wire)

listening to unknown path s pathfinder for the first time is a claustrophobic experience. it s as if the tracks had been recorded to tape and left to decompose for 10 or so years, then dug up and re-recorded. a thick layer of grunge and an overall murky feel sets the tone for path 0.1 and continues throughout the ep. paths 0.2 and 0.3 add a more upbeat feel to proceedings, as the beats get scattered around like they were in a pinball machine. path 0.4 finishes off the experience by bringing the tempo back down, while all the time keeping the uneasy atmospherics that make this ep a unique and rewarding listen.

after releasing their first two releases on one disc, the third release on amsterdam imprint working titles is a release on its own. label founders scott franka & kaap are behind the label s third release that features two epic tracks from the dutch pair and again finds them exploring new and exciting techno territory with their lively machine jams.
first track poise i is a deep and dubbed out techno track with deft synths slowly shapeshifting and bringing sombreness to the quickened groove. it’s late night music to zone you out with sparse but rich detailing to keep your mind occupied and it gets ever-busier over the course of thirteen enthralling minutes. then poise ii is a 16 minute masterpiece that is watery and dubby. it has undulating synth currents and increasingly textured snares. building to a peak then pulling back, with occasional freaky vocal sounds and sci-fi motifs, it is a truly cinematic piece that closes out an ambitious ep.

backyard boogie present their first release from the new label coming out of amsterdam. the release comes from the friendship of charlie & jody and what they created together coming from two different musical backgrounds, now with their music crossing paths. they used a variety of analog machines and field recordings to help create the music. the release also sees a collaboration with a local amsterdam artist ardjoen mahangoe, who helped create the artwork for the release.

the extended mixes single of phase fatale s debut full-length album on hospital productions takes three of the most dancefloor-ready songs from redeemer into abstracted, surreal and uncharted territory aimed for unlit, claustrophobic chambers. aided by silent servant with additional production, together hayden payne and juan mendez transform -order of severity,- -operate within,- and -spoken ashes- further down the machine. with more percussion and editing, they tear apart and lengthen the tracks through temporal space. the redeemer (extended mixes) 12- will be released simultaneously alongside the full-length album, adding yet another dimension into payne s own universe of the degenerated present.

mark and clive ives have been prime examples of the second life reissue culture can give previously under-appreciated artists, and emotional rescue have been one of the key labels to support the enigmatic brothers from london. as with previous reissues, -a la luna- presents the delicate, naive yet deep sound of woo across a long form album that invites you on a curious journey of discovery. with a melodic instinct bordering on exotica, and unique range of instruments in the sound palette and a dreamlike approach to processing, there s nothing out there that sounds quite like woo, and as ever it s a joy to delve into their sound world and leave more earthly familiarities behind.

left ear are re-introducing another ten lost tracks from nicholas georgieff and virgil work, st louis basement electronics duo workdub. the release spans material from 1989-95 and includes recordings from their sole lp and both cassette albums. workdubs music hardly fits into a vacuum and some might even say it’s otherworldly. tracks like reach for the stars and lunar module reflect dreams of space-age exploration, all the while their investigation into drum machines, synthesizers, samples matched with their organic live instrumentation work to create a unique atmospheric dubbed out sound.

a one of a kind track with a totally unique groove and a bass line not coming from this world. the dx sound that makes the track so powerful sounds like some kind of mutant machine that is going wild and the sublime combination with the robert owens vocals makes this a highlight in the history of house music!

after a feature on steffi s fabric 94 mix cd (and the accompanying dolly deluxe 3 release), late night approach debuts on klakson with a hyper funky electro twelve. the two tracks on the a side both show machine music that s simultaneously human, whether it s the melancholic shards of melody buried under -clarence mews- commanding rhythmic pulsations, or the beautifully striking chords on -luvquest-. however, the b-side takes us to gloomy subterranean pastures with the uptempo banger -primo-, while a2 -kit- crosses over into broken beats but still keeps the same shadowy atmosphere.

this may look like just another lp, but in reality, it s a journey. i always made electronic music, but sometimes i wanted to get a musical point across that a synthesizer couldn t reach: the human touch, the perfection of imperfections, atonal experiments, the euphoria of the slightly out-of-tune fuzz guitar. so 7 years ago, my friend weytkin and me started a guitar combo to see what we could do with our collection of guitars and vintage equipment. the only machine i was 100% familiar with was the drummer: my trusty roland tr-808.- – ruud lekx (rude 66, jagdstaffel 66, lekx).

in the spirit of pioneering library music manufacturers and archives like de wolfe and kpm, red bull music academy presents a series of library music releases by academy alumni. new zealandís grayson gilmour helms the inaugural entry with his unique combination of baroque pop, electronics, and new wave sounds, accompanied by a remix from bristolian ambient and drone producer paul jebanasam. mastered at calyx and manufactured via handle with care.

recording and touring together on and off for several years now, sonic journeyman dj vadim and californian songwriter katrina blackstone unveil their long awaited full-length album ‘double sided’, released on bbe music. after providing a pair of stellar guest appearances on vadim’s 2014 dubcatcher album, katrina blackstone joined vad on tour and the duo have been steadily laying down tracks ever since. eschewing samples in favour of drum machines, guitars and a dizzying array of synths, vadim’s compositions on ‘double sided’ range from dubby downtempo grooves to upbeat afroboogie business. katrina’s crystal clear vocals, catchy melodies and highly relatable lyrics provide the perfect foil for vadim’s raw productions.

from the twilight zone of rhythm section international comes a new label for 2017: international black. this is the offshoot’s 3rd release this year and the machine shows no signs of slowing down. bradley zero’s ear for new talent continues to pay off as we are introduced to yet another young pair of producers, mallard & lt, going by the name of ‘j deep’. mallard, a 19 yo jazz student who made a big splash with his debut rs intl ep, ‘verte’, returns with a track aimed more squarely at the dancefloor. although hypnotic and ethereal, it packs a punch, with the arrangement and musicality belying mallard’s musical training at trinity college. on the flip side, mallard joins forces with another promising producer who goes by the name ‘lt’ in their collaborational partnership known as j.deep. complex jazz chords swim around 909’s to create an elevating techno roller that climbs and climbs only to give way to sparse rave stabs and ecstatic snare patterns. tried and tested for the best part of a year, these are 2 serious jams, proven to cause dancefloor frenzy.

after releasing space control an intergalactic journey into synthesizers, back in 2012, the theremynt duo went on to release a successful, if steady, stream of eps, including robotique de l amou r and vampiros discos (a tribute to brazilian filmmaker ze do caixao). with remixes coming from the likes of david carretta, acid washed and club bizarre, these were playlisted by scene djs such as marvin & guy and ivan smagghe, amongst others. now yann and eva are striking back with their second lp, parallels. it s a record that sees them changing their colour palette and mood, but one that s still haunted by ghosts that lurk within their synthesizers and drum machines. the 10 tracks still exhibit peel s ever shifting vocal style and yann s sophisticated arrangements. but the second lp oscillates between ballad and dancefloor, landing between cosmic disco influences, krautrock and other progressive techno sounds. as a bonus, the album also features a cover of famous 80 s anthem self control. while they may have landed a fair while ago, it’s great to see emotional response revisit timothy j fairplay s crucial early eps with an absolutely on point remix package. scientific dreamz of u brings his distinctive signal chain to -stories of prison-, using grinding synths and some snaking broken beats to create an early 90s trance mood to die for. alessandro parisi keeps things on a distinctly new wave tip for -aim for the yellow sector-, and perseus traxx brings a bold set of machine beats and technicolour synths to -saco bay-. antenna finishes the ep off by creating a winsome, wavey version of -night ferry- for sensitive souls to do the robot to.

with previous form on colors and love fever, remi mazet returns on relatively new label social joy with a deep and refined trip through house music as played by a true musician. there’s a dusky, cinematic quality to the whole ep, from the captivating intro to the sweet rhodes soul of -safran- and on to the broken wheeze of -jazz e-. -shrine- has a more forthright club-ready veneer, while -jammin- brings furthermore machine-oriented grooves, but at all times the devil is in the details, and this record is most devilish indeed. one for all those craving a little more subtlety and flair in their house music.
