in its five years dgtl has carved its style and sound worldwide as one of amsterdams staple dance music institutions. this year the organisation is deepening its focus and vision. therefore dgtl is launching its own imprint dgtl records. the label builds on the festivals musical theme of an evocative cross section of the sounds and styles showcasing forward thinking, cutting edge artists. the one to kick off the new imprint will be the bulgarian hardware wizard kink. best known for his live performances, teemed with explosive energy, which for a consecutive year puts him to the no.1 spot of live acts on ra poll, he is also one of houses most in demand producers. kink has worked with dgtl for quite some time, including last years audiovisual installation transmission tower, where the first track neutrino was born. the melodic neutrino , kicks off with syncopating bassline. its interconnecting layers organically jump over and under each other, reflecting the organic character of kinks live performances, where every knob touch and turn matters. on the latter, he built the b-sider dynamo: i loaded my favourite element from neutrino in my computer and i tweaked the sound through various weird devices in my studio, till it sounded like a completely new track. as usual, he added a few endless loops on the record, for the adventurous djs, exclusively for the 12inch. the idea for the dgtl records artwork is to feature a different visual/graphic artist from the dgtl art program every year starting with the cover from tim buiting and his graphical visual of the liege train station, designed by calatrava for this years releases.

dj support comes from ben ufo, jon k and hodge. semtek returns with his first work since 2012, when he contributed 12inches to world unknown, awkward movements and in plain sight. in the meantime the cambridge-born, bristol-based producer and dj has been hard at work running his label don t be afraid, bringing through talent including mr beatnick and mgun. bad teeth consists of nothing more complicated than two complementary tracks for the dancefloor, inspired by bleep n bass, jungle and two-step. the title track rolls moody synths, metallic stabs and offbeat drums into a rugged uk house joint. jon of worcester twists similar elements around a broken groove, cutting between drum machine and breakbeats. both tracks feature rolling basslines tuned for maximum soundsystem pressure.

closing the end of 2016 and blueprint’s 20th anniversary year is a new blueprint ltd release by r.a.s.p. going straight for the jugular with their ‘deployment’ ep, we’re given four tracks of twisted beats and cutting-edge techno to mark their blueprint debut. whether it’s the dancefloor destruction of ‘deployed’, delving into the deep sonic depths of ‘fortified’, the sensitive touch of dark melody in ‘insert point’, or the speckled electronic groove of ‘strong hold’, the ep underlines another stunning year of releases for the label and its sister imprint.

all tracks have been inspired by cubist art, this creates results in a graph and cutting sound. effective techno for the dance floor and ambient futuristic passages.

the last and eighth release in this series opens up with christian wunschs remix of ex machina on the a-side which is all hypnotic bounce, roaring chords, cutting through the irrepressible groove. morbecks remix of ghost town on a2 is an atmospheric but tough interpretation of the original, kicking hard with jackhammered drums, coupled with metal scraping metal sounds and a simplicity that makes it a handy tool to build great tension on the dance-floor. the b-side kicks off with jonas koppss remix of miscellaneous pt. 1 – creatively pairing the heavy rolling 909 drums with a classic four-on-the-floor clap pattern and topped with the eroded drones of the original track. b2 is a re-mastered version of the utterly timeless and epic club hit “1969” by the mastermind christian morgenstern himself.

copenhagen’s music for dreams continue their string of pearls in 2016 with the 12” release of apiento & lx’s dish. at the request of cutting edge danish designer trine lindegaard, paul byrne (aka apiento) created this music to accompany her dish project - a playful fusion of food, fashion and art - when it premiered at 2016 copenhagen fashion week. for the project, lindegaard worked with members of integration organization itmv in copenhagen to produce clothing items based on their favourite food dishes, apiento and regular collaborator uk-based house producer lx, used the recorded interviews of their discussions as raw material with cut-up samples of the women’s voices woven into the music for the runway show. the result is an ethereal and avant-garde mix of crisp beats and featherlight percussion blended in a fresh and modern oriental-flavoured balearic groove packed with gorgeous flutes and kalimbas. the powerful dub on the flip-side brings a heavier more trippy feel geared firmly for the dancefloor. as well as a string of great remixes and edits as apiento, paul byrne is also well known for his behind-thescenes work with labels like junior boy s own, international feel and deewee, and for his highly influential blog test pressing. limited edition vinyl - don’t miss.
