b.riddim is luis sequeira, a portuguese living in london. magic my ear is his second ep for third ear, following the (in) theory ep in 2012. formerly a driving force in the influential portuguese rap group g-ward under the name bellatur, luis followed his love of jamaican dub using electronics to arrive at a sound which is identifiable through the sum of its parts but which is quite unique.

the yore captain returns to his own yore imprint on the labels 21st release. shadow city presents different visions of funky house grooves. the a sides the y theme gets deeply moving with a funky house pulse before stoking the fire with the addition of speaking voices (trippingly intoning the q&a what are we doing this for? and the music), a move which single-handedly jumpstarts the track. after the voices appear, the grooves intensity escalates and plunges deeper, its gyroscopic house swing becoming more dizzying and torrential with each passing bar before coming to an acidy storming end. in its opening moments, shadow city opts for a deeper and more serenading vibe by comparison, but thats traded in for a slinkier attack at the three-minute mark that grows progressively more ferocious as the track makes its drastic upwards ascent. a trippin dangerous murder weapon to say the least. watch your heads! the b sides b2 track, mumbai dweller keeps the focus primarily on the bottom end, specifically a strutting tribal-house funk groove thats dragged even deeper by a throbbing bass undertow, adding dark chords to it, giving this ep a darker feeling towards the end. to sum it all up: this is raw house music at its best!

the model is no stranger to gigolo, and we (the royal we) are no strangers to the model. as a supporter of gigolo records, you, our fated reader, should be familiar with our protagonist previous gigolo adventure. but in the words of the late george harrison, >all things must pass< and with this in mind we would like to reintroduce...
the model doesnt just have his own sound, he has in fact attempted to engineer his own genre: dark-techno-baroque. the sound has been crafted through a penchant for aristocratic mannerisms and a passion for high fashion and low fetish. it also happens to pretty succinctly sum up part of his unique personality. set against a backdrop of refined charm, there s an underbelly of something dark and brutal, which is possibly the best way to describe the a-side >in the night<. in many ways this could be seen as a return to form for gigolo, immediately poppy but structured as a classic song with haunting vocals underpinned with a driving techno rhythm. to further consolidate the techno aesthetic look no further then >flex on the b-side and you have a pounding track that could have been played by daft punk in 96 and will probably find a home with a diverse selection of djs today.
the >vampire funk ep< is the first release from the models forthcoming album on gigolo. the concept is in the same vain, but delves deeper into the dark-side of the model. exploring his fetish with the night and creatures that occupy its opulent corridors. like classic transylvanian tales the music from this album will present details that set the mood and composition to create tracks with narrative regardless of lyrics or words. the result being music that moves both bodies and minds and stirs the blood. as pretentious as this sounds the author of this mindless scrap of paper has the fortunate privilege of speaking from experience. as the mind that moves the hands that moves the keyboard is the mind that is being moved by the music as i type and you read. so we are already part way there. the rest will unfold in the coming months.

markus schatz and brett longman brilliant combo delivers on frankie rec their so original deep and bleepy melodic techno à.we start with a1-funky bells phat bleepy house cut with warm weird female voices and heady original atmosphereàon a2-crazy bob is a piece of funky techno with distorded melodic synths àon the flip b1-frau jo with french vocals parts and a mental deep atmosphereàvery inspirated track with beautifull arrangements àsounds a great moment of contemplation àand b2-walking drops more straight techy beats with some jazzy incursions and shuffle cut voices àwell to sum up this ep looks like a great journey indeed!

after a break from solo production for his own blueprint label, during which he released a well-received album ( the dash ) on the mighty tresor, and a brace of singles as o/v/r (with regis), james ruskin returns to home-ground with a cracking two-tracker. sabre is a classic ruskin production, booming bottom-end and a mind-mangling filtered fx loop swirling around over the top. deceptively simple production that is definitely greater than the sum of its parts, as all good techno should be. on the flipside, massk follows a similar template, with only 5 or 6 parts throughout the whole track, but the subtle changes in arrangement lure the listener in to the deep and dark world of mr ruskin...

cynosure flag ship artist and label navigator mike shannon reaches into his archives and selects the much-anticipated “the box ep.” “the box is open” was always a highlight of many of mr.shannon’s dj sessions and live acts. this cut delivers nostalgic, old school of detroit, soulful, techno jack. a ton to digest there but there really is no other way to sum it up. adam marshall graces the ep with a stormer of a remix. taking things a step further, adam really explores a different use of the chords given to you in the original. a smooth kicking set of drums and ever elevating sequences of synth keep you on your toes never really knowing exactly when things will drop. definitely a production trait that adam is best known for and it never fails on the floor. howie mangel

its about time that i put you all up on some more electro...yeh, i know, ive been pretty biased with all the hip hop & sneaker posts! the blogs going to have a bit of a facelift soon, including some of the content, so stay tuned! anyhow, this gem comes from french duo donovan. to sum up their style, theyve got a chromeo-esque kind of sound to them, crunchy electro with an 80s feel. theyve also banged out some sick remixes for the likes of sebasiten tellier & in the club (their remix of turn you on is straight fire). breakin sounds great dave spoon (radio 1 - worldwide) yet another quality release from work it baby. this label really has developed its own sound release by release and its always a great quality especially in these days of all the same.matteo esse (cosmonote srl / various worldwide) charlie fanclub remix is real nice dj neoteric (many / dubsided records / national + international touring) i fucking love the charlie fanclub mix, totally up my street. i will be hammering it.
