if you ever have been seeking of tracks with a heart for pop music, the groove of house music and the humour of two guys who dont take anything serious but dance music you dont have to search any further - bottich (german for tub) is what you are looking for. a justin timberlake duo for the big-hearted, a groove machine for the lame and a couple of future hits for the karaoke machine

deadbeat. tikiman. infinity. dub. a quadrangle of such obvious statement and perfect musical inference may very well never have been uttered for those of the wholly weeded out persuasion. indeed, when the great book of dub music is written the names scott monteith and paul st hilaire will undoubtedly figure highly in its chapters devoted to recent years. monteith, the last great prodigal son of the doctrine handed down from the blue mount of lord scratch and king tubby, st hilaire the undisputed voice of a generation, those fanatical warrior monks, followers of the most holy house of ernestus and von oswald incarnate.

a new line (related) is the latest venture from lancashire-based andrew johnson (hood/remote viewer/moteer). utilising tools from the early days of home produced underground dance music (such as sk5 sampler keyboards and vintage drum machines) andrew has unearthed a beautiful album of downbeat, lamp-lit techno, industrial grade ambience and sonic experimentation which at times recalls early warp records, gescom and raw, 313 area beatdown house, as well as the more modern breed of electronic and techno travellers such as actress, mark fell (late period) and even theo parrish (the slow sound of your life).

after a successful first year, untzz twelve inch start off 2014 with their first extended player, a collaborative offering between friends freddie norwood & dass on 180 gram vinyl. freddie touched gold since his debut they never used to stay out all night, winning the hearts of selectors and home listeners alike, and the tongue in cheek how low can u go went on to become an anthem of both european and australian summers. all the while dass has maintained a strong presence in the shadows, honing a dark and atmospheric sound that remains inviting for the creatures of the night. together, they have crafted an elegant and timeless record showcasing a further look into what is still to come from untzz twelve inch.

next up on magic feet is a release by dark strands. tonys first release came via the first magic feet label sampler. since then his releases have caught the attention of a number of acclaimed djs, with daniel avery citing one of tonys tracks as one of the best he had heard last year. this is tonys first full vinyl release and shows exactly what he is capable of. the title track *return of the oscillator* has had people running to the booth every time its been played from london to croatia, as well as being fully road tested at alfos by sean johnston who also provides a superb remix under his hardway bros guise. the second track *galactic* slows the pace down and is perfect for those warm up sets.

of banks and gangsters - that basically sums up recent spanish history and also the new strand ep called *bankstaz paradise*. accompanied by the banksters and the financial horns, strand also has shuane singing on one of the songs and there is a remix by om unit which is seriously awesome. in addition to fact magazine, it has already been featured on dazed & confused, dj mag, earmilk, playground and dj shadow has said that it rules.

after spending most of 2013 focused on building the oktave brand in chicago, jeff derringer returns to production with the release of the *closer ep* on prosthetic pressings. with this record, jef s sound evolves into the steely, hypnotic territory of his live performances. both originals, *further* and *closer*, delve into sonic textures and ambient tones not yet heard in jeffs music, while still keeping focus on the heavy, syncopated beats that have become his trademark.

this is the year of peder mannerfelts rebirth. after seven years he has laid the subliminal kid to rest. with this new 12 inch, the chains have been locked in and the road map has been obliterated. ep1 is focused like a laser etching out intricate patterns in massive, humming machines. mannerfelts ideas have been reduced to a razors edge and he balances these freeform compositions like a master.
this ep could be seen as a prelude to peder mannerfelts debut album under his own name that will be released by digitalis industries in february and at the same time is the first part in a ongoing series of self released records by mannerfelt.

for its first release of 2014, sammy dees ultrastretch label has called upon monsieur georget. youre forgiven if the name is unfamiliar. his bio offers few clues—he likes his bicycle, vin rouge and analog hardware, the latter of which was apparent on his recent debut for le loup and seuils hold youth label. bold and auspicious, the ep may have left you wondering if it was something more than a first record. and as it turns out, monsieur georget is none other than chris carrier, the long-active french purveyor of hypnotically minimal house.luckily we werent left waiting for very long for more material from carriers new alias. his second release, le vicieu / colle de la bonette, shows that monsieur georget and monsieur dee share an affinity for pared down, wonderfully elastic club tracks. like carriers best work, the compositions themselves are minimalist, but their hardware-based sound pallet ensures theres plenty of meat on the bones. a-side le vicieu is a subtly melodic shuffler, where deep bass growls at the core of an expansive drum set and whispers suffuse the negative space with mystery. on the flipside, colle de la bonette takes the sound someplace stranger and more psychedelic. whatever weird place were whisked off to, though, its every bit as funky, with brittle drums undulating to the kicks deliciously irregular throb. >monsieur georget< might be a brand-new name, but we’re willing to wager you ll quickly get to know these rollers well.

alexander kowalski is someone you should know. not only is he a resident artist at our club, but with uncountable eps and several albums on heiko laux label kanzleramt and others, he has contributed more to electronic music than many others. to have a separate platform for the darker and harder productions of his, he created the alias d_func. a while ago. when he approached us with the tracks that are now on the record in hand, we immediately fell in love with the mills-like energy of them. perfect drum programming, driving synth lines two perfect tools for any proper techno set. the dirt mix of revalism which is included in the digital release package puts the original in a more modern jacket with its stompy beat – another proof of how well alexander knows what the djs need to please their crowd.let the dancefloors burn!

with *believe in love* yousef returns home to circus recordings with 3 cuts that have been turning heads all summer long. the title track features the legendary vocal of roy davis jr who once again, asks the world a poignant question. a rolling, infectious and gnarly groove develops and unfolds into a long and harmonic breakdown before a blistering crescendo. designed for the heads but with still enough action for the people that follow yousefs more musically trickier offerings.

following their acclaimed debut album, migration, on prins thomas internasjonal label in 2012, jamie paton and nigel hoyle (aka nigel of bermondsey) have seemed relatively quiet save for the odd remix here and there. tucked away deep in their south east london base though, a series of remixes and solo projects have been steadily forming. with new c&a material planned for 2014, plus more to come from jamies new solo efforts, as well as nigel making a long overdue reappearance in maurice & charles, now seems the right time to draw a line under their collective work to date. here then are a collection of unreleased interpretatons, including the sought after vocal remix of psychedlic darlings, in goats anthemic run to your mama. this is followed by a late night dub of 80s pop duo blancmange that mixes strings, guitar and some dub bass with a dose of space echo before bringing neil arthur s classicly recognisable refrain shining through. to finish is a remix of goats label mates teeth of the sea. fx-soundtrack vocal, bubbling 303 and 808 combine on a proper 3am dub that builds beyond some mere drug-chug.

whiskey disco #25: it started in 2009 when a friend rang sleazy mcqueen and asked to *press some of those edits he has been making* and has now reached its 25th vinyl release. time flies when you are having fun - and fun has always been the cornerstone of whiskey disco. back to the roots ep exemplifies the label mission and the disco hippies who cherish it. loops filtered, space rocked and jam band, whiskey disco has made a mark on the edit scene that few can dispute and we have only just begun.

cyber dance records return with a full-length double-vinyl album from manchesters kid machine (aka mark wilkinson) following a string of instantly sold-out eps for viewlexx, red laser and flight recorder. a long-time collaborator of world-famous italo disco dj flemming dalum, it is no surprise that many of the tracks have that hallmark space sound reminiscent of the likes of cyber people and koto, but mark stamps his own distinct identity on the genre by slowing down the bpms and incorporating many other influences throughout so that this is no retro affair but a distinctly fresh and modern take on the genre.

fresh from supporting claude vonstroke on the massive 25 date north american urban animal tour, j.phlip, has finally stolen a moment to complete her latest and much anticipated release. her last appearance on dirtybird called *coefficient*, found the girl from illinois flexing her european techno muscles and adding the likes of surgeon & dave clarke to her rapidly swelling fanbase. her incredible dj skills on the road have been catching everyone’s attention and she is currently prepping to go back on the road with vonstroke for the europe leg of his tour.

dungeon meat is the new label and production outfit brought to you by dungeon masters brawther and tristan da cunha. packing a serious punch, its aim is to present tracks designed specifically to rock the party and shake the sound system. originally conceived as a platform for their own musical visions it soon became apparent that they would have to open the doors to a select few who shared their ambition to make no messing, hard hitting house grooves. one of these artists is the mysterious blunt instruments who has the honour of kicking off the label. after road testing his huge club hammer hold back brawther and da cunha knew it had to be on dungeon meat as it epitomised exactly the sound they wanted to present. hold back has been a firm fixture in their sets and even got cut to dubplate by jeremy underground paris. its not all about the a-side though as blunt instruments craft 2 other killer club cuts for the flip side we wont go on too much trying to describe how good this ep is ... instead well let the music do the talking

piston recordings label boss rogerio martins is next up on his own well-established label with a new track that gets plenty of great remix treatment from joss moog, james dexter and jr from dallas. martins has steered his label through a dizzying amount of quality releases since 2007 picking up support from the likes of laurent garnier and john aquaviva who have confirmed themselves as fans in the past and this new release is sure to find just as much favour with the top dogs. >gonna be mine< is the one martins original and is a classical inclined bit of mature house music with sombre piano chords draped over nicely shuffling percussion. subtle human sounds litter the arrangement and more lively stabs enter the fray in the latter half but essentially this is all about the warm and inviting groove.

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.
