as much as, in modern days, it has become increasingly difficult to pin things down to a specific genre this release brings very defined genres but also a refreshing feature, a constant change of energy in one single track, and most importantly, it all comes with this modern feel to it which indicates it is the new generation rising making justice to what ultrastretch stands for, surfacing fresh and new talents. signed by austrian duo foehn & jerome. the a side is of the ep consists of the genius idea that it is a relatively simple track, however, with the feel that so much is happening, the type when you listen to a loop but one you can listen to forever and not get tired of it, always the best sign. a rolling and constant bassline makes it into a super fat and rounded dancefloor groover, while on top you have these fragments of chopped up vocal samples in and out creating a sense of confusion, a mind drilling element is then complemented by very loose and fine hihats floating around. on the b side starts with quirky minimal track with a galloping kick throughout, when the open hihats slam in with a vocal it quickly develops into a very happy and playful housy vibe and just when you are riding, the clap slams in now on a tighter hat sequence followed by the break and rebuilding, when it comes back however it adds another element changing the energy yet again, through introducing a synthline. the quirky frog sounding noises throughout certainly makes it a super witty track overall.

matuss takes techno and turns it on its head. the cybernetic sound has been filled with human emotion, giving it a more organic feel than much of the music that would fall under the genre. she opens her absence seizure 007 ep in trademark style, with a dark jacking cut entitled pitchureque, in which a pulsating bass line throbs alongside ominous acid swells and disorientating panning effects. next up, tektango takes a different route honing in on a set of live tribal tinged percussion, which sway and dissipate with hypnotic effect driven further into the depths with a bubbling synth lead and filtering atmospherics. this live percussion gives the track that organic feel mentioned earlier. escapade kick starts the b-side with a robust rhythm, built from the ground up with resonant hi hat stabs, echoing claps and sturdy kicks which forms the framework for a deranged lead melody laced with wide open synths and emotive chords to carry the groove. closing the package is fonque, where flanger-tinged snare rolls work in unison with driving rhythms, delicate arpeggios and an intricate 303 bass line to create an infectious closing cut.

the practice of pseudoscience, a three track ep by m parent, is the second vinyl release from the us based label chem club records. having been inspired by peripheral thoughts about pseudosciences, this ep is washed in steady emotional build ups using airy reverb, scattering percussion, throbbing stabs and solid kicks. the title track (a1) uses these elements to move towards a piercing synth peak while cycle of intellect (a2) spaces out these features as it creeps to a dubby impactful end. the b side temazcal rites was directly motivated by a scorching summer day when the intensity of the sun sparked an idea for a sizzling percussive experiment. what were left with is a funky but emotive soundscape that tops off the ep in a unique fashion.

who whom is a new label curated by scuba. the artists are various, the sound particular. the second 12inch comprises tracks by isaac reuben, glaskin, palendrone and markus suckut and is titled heavy on the magick.

after a blistering end to 2016, rhythm section intl begins its 2017 schedule with a second outing from peckham duo fyi chris. sitting firmly left of centre, these 4 tracks manage the very difficult task of being both unconventional and highly functional. highly recommended for fans of similarly difficult-to-categorise artists such as red axes, axel boman and baba stiltz.

after his acclaimed heatwave and shadows mixtapes, leonce releases insurgency on fade to mind, the first official ep from the young atlanta-based producer. insurgency was born from demos and sketches first recorded in 2014-2015, inspired by leonce’s favorite elements of house music and his desire to recraft these influences into his own club microverse. in leonce’s words: “if house is a feeling, then insurgency is me subverting that feeling across different tempo ranges and going into weirder and darker territory, like the classic raw house tracks that inspired me.”

making his debut appearance with the magic circles music label, smashed atoms lays down the law with a bubbly, warm and disco-inflected vision of contemporary house music for the groovier end of a warm up session. -holding on- bursts with positivity as chirpy organ stabs and plush pads swirl around the slow but strong rhythm section. -the people come together- meanwhile gets a late 80s boogie kink in its swagger, ramping up the bass and throwing in some powerful chord progressions to get the soul stirring. -wonderlust- finishes the ep off with a breezy, summer-ready jam for feel-good times in the sun or under the stars.

high-energy, rowdy, raucous, longhair mississippi glam rock. that’s the sound of easy, the week’s long-awaited followup to their breakthrough album, dear bo jackson. recorded at ardent studios in memphis, easy finds the weeks doubling down on a mix of groove, grit, and guitars. it’s swaggering and sharply-focused, shining new light on a band of brothers who, although still in their mid-20s, have already logged a decade’s worth of sweaty gigs together. easy consolidates the band’s strengths, it’s driving and direct, captured in punchy sound by producer paul ebersold. “we called it easy because every time i make music with these guys, it’s easy,” says cain, who has spent more than a third of his life as a member of the weeks. “but the other side of it is, there’s nothing easy about being in a band... we have the easiest job on the planet. but it works for us.”

mirror would turn out to be pearce’s final offering as fsa for 15 years, but at the time of its release in 2000 it felt like the start of something exciting and new – it was seen in some quarters as one of the first great records of the millennium. sonically, it was pearce’s most accessible and melodic album. “his sombre, acoustic folk still recalls the gentle melancholy of nick drake,” said the pitchfork review, “but for the first time, the melodies and lyrics can be clearly deciphered.”

new lands, released in 1997, was album proper no 3, described by pearce as “phase two” of the fsa project. it found pearce operating alone and finally realising the guitar sound that had been in his head all along. “something like ar kane’s god-like up home!,” he revealed in an interview at the time. it was a stark and often challenging listen (pearce stated in one interview that it was originally going to be called fuck you!), yet utterly beguiling.
