fredfades is a norwegian producer specialising in the uncut raw hip hop. here’s his debut solo album, “warmth”. (vinyl includes download code) in 2013 he dropped a classic with ivan ave called breathe on kingunderground records. warmth is his debut solo album following a long line of singles, collaborative albums, cassettes and load of independently released projects. the album has 16 tracks made from jazz, soul and boogie samples with gritty drums and a dash of synth stabs, mixed by fred and mastered at strype audio in oslo by christian obermayer. the title track warmth is the last track on the album and was sampled from a live recording off one of fred’s favourite jazz records that is always on heavy rotation at the crib. guests at the table include med (stones throw), mndsgn (stones throw), ivan ave, (jakarta), moruf, koreatown oddity (stones throw), chester watson and more.
hands is the epitome of a fredfades & ivan collaboration, relying on supremely minimalist production and heartfelt lyrics. it came together naturally on a late winter night in oslo almost two years ago, and was released as part of an online ivan ave ep. according to ivan this is the one song that listeners/fans most demanded be given a physical release. so with no further ado, we present you with this throwback gem on a 7 inch. it also includes the timeless instrumental on the flip.
for this project fredfades remixes nine of his favorite rap songs. dense layers of samples from hard to find records, crisp drums and ruthless bass lines are some of the ingredients fred uses to create new versions of these hip-hop gems. some of them seem to have come out edgier and more interesting than the original songs. legendary to some, obscure to others, all the acapellas have been laced with the jazzyness fades has become known to represent. all beats via one were produced on the cult status sp1200 machine (the street smartz beat was produced using the mpc 2000xl). a few of the tracks were co-produced by deckdaddy & john rice (oslo sp ensemble). the result is a wide range of super tight raps and the distinct and consistent style of a young producer with an old soul. if you appreciate timeless rap flows over some bold reinventions of the golden era sound, this is a must cop record!
fredfades & ivan aves *breathe* ep is available on a limited edition 12 inch of 250 copies with full colour artwork and inner-sleeves. the ep contains 17 tracks all produced by fredfades, some of which were produced on the emu sp-1200 and the others on the akai mpc 2000xl. the a-side are all vocal tracks by the norwegian lyrical genius ivan ave, formerly known as ivan average. the b-side is like a mini madlib *medicine show* with a mesh of fredfades instrumentals, samples and cuts. it is one of those records where you can put the needle on the wax and listen to it the whole way through, with no gaps in between the songs. the song *waiting forever* is featuring kristoffer eikrem on the trumpet, who fred met through a fellow friend/musician, mathias stubø (proviant audio, bbe records) & tarjei, who plays the keys. the song was recorded at norges musikk høyskole / the norwegian music high school.
