this reissue contains the bonus 12-track album patashnik 2. allmusic review by ned raggett: one reason why jenssen s work stands out from the flood of early 90s ambient/techno releases is his strong sense of the quirkily creepy not in an aphex twin mode, but in his own particular way. the contrasting samples of a child quaveringly saying, we had a dream last night,-followed by a rougher sample saying, we had the same dream, gives opening number phantasm an unsettling feeling. intensified by the, on the one hand, pretty, on the other, disturbing music, buried synth strings and a soft pulse accentuated by clattering noises deep in the mix, it kicks off the striking patashnik very well. though not as openly dark as acts like lull, for instance, biosphere still has an edge which isnt just melancholic, its downright ominous at point. there s the slow crawl of startoucher, for instance, with its buried vocal snippets and deep bass drone, or the blend of the space signal atmospheres of mir into the low, brooding intro to the shield. not everything is so shadowy, though, patashnik is primarily a relax and chill listening experience, but not without its gentle high points. novelty waves, which became a crossover single in some quarters, has a good dancefloor sharpness to it even as jenssen slyly sneaks in odd drones and samples through the mix. the opening snippet talking about an extraterrestrial disc jockey on seti project is good for a smile, as well as acting as a sharp lead-in to a fast rhythm track. mostly, though, things continue on a deliciously unnerving pace throughout, gentle enough to go down easy but still just off enough to ensure you cant call this new age folderol for the rave generation.

stasis005 is another vinyl issue of elysia crampton s digital work, following stasis003, the bound adam 2011 7inch. it is the first pressing of the light that you gave me to see you, originally released under the name e+e. the arrangements were conceived between 2011 and 2012, and the l.p. was finally assembled in 2013, while the artist was homeless in los angeles, california. this edition also includes a previously unreleased bonus track, troll song, which originates from the same period. as with bound adam 2011, the art is by felix lee, and the master is by brandon hocura.

after putting the band on the map with their first ep two years ago, the band feathered sun has grown into a life of its own. the more live sets they have played, the better they have defined their style. they are spearheading a brand of sound healing music abstractly narrative, always poetic, sometimes flirting with darkness but always perfectly produced to carry the audience into their own world. feathered sun are the collaborative experiment of nu, jo.ke, raz ohara, chris schwarzwaelder, iannis ritter and acid pauli johannes laumer. each have active and flourishing solo artist careers, albeit still have time to collaborate with one another. the six-strong collective are a close-knit troupe who are primarily based in berlin and lima, peru. live improvisation is ultimately what brought the feathered sun project to life - they are open about their laidback, impromptu approach and this is apparent throughout this ep. side a was primarily crafted in peru by chris schwarzwaelder and jo.ke with raz ohara’s mesmerising vocals. the end material was then sent to nu in berlin who crafted two tracks out of it. the ‘bulbo’ ep shows a willingness to explore different approaches within the collective and the music showcases their long-standing affiliation. it is a downtempo ep that has immaculate instrumentation, dreamy pads and brooding vocals throughout. this is intertwined with organic sounds and moody atmospheric melodies, gives the release a timeless and emotive ambience.

electro kicks, raw textures, ominous choirs: l immaginario, previstos opening track, ties a bound between martellis two releases on antinote, giving us one last glimpse at the uninhabited post-apocalyptic landscapes drawn in menti singole. however, this time leonardo martelli explores a more urban universe, as the use of rap samples on negli abissi and lo schema suggests. martelli exploits their aggressiveness in a way that somehow reminds us of minimalist rap tapes from memphis. the third tracks title makes it even clearer: called leggende metropolitane, the song is a trip into the darkest blind alleys of the city, an invitation to wander among human wastes, driven by its light kick.

music is about discourse: it’s about ideas, about the intellectual project. anyone can build a “beat”, but not everybody can produce an interesting argument for it. this implies the idea of romanticism as a notion of tradition and respect for certain rules. romanticism understood as virtuosity in the manipulation of art production tools. virtuosi of their own methodology. certain pedigree of virtuosity is definitely needed…but in many regards it also remains an extremely conventional formalism, which is at the core of every artist. it doesn’t matter if you have to piss around in the subterranean electronic music trenches for over two decades. a true pioneer simply has to live with that sort of dichotomy. here there are two good examples.

asher levitas is perhaps best known as part of old apparatus, the acclaimed and enigmatic london experimental outfit. over the last few years he has featured on releases for labels including deep medi, houndstooth and left blank as ‘saa’ with the singer linn carin dirdal.
‘lit harness’, his first solo album, started forming as a project in 2015 alongside the artist and writer michael crowe who worked on the live a/v show while asher created the music with vocalist marina elderton (from the ethereal psych band kull) who features on the tracks.

british art-rock band no-man (tim bownes & stewen wilson w mick karn, richard barbieri, steve jansen, ben coleman) recorded heaven taste in the studio sessions in summer 1992. it got first released as a complete 21 mins version on painting paradise ep on one little indian (1993). the track drew attention in the rising ambient techno scene and got played by djs like mixmaster morris. the track fuses ambient techno with art rock and features a distinctive fretless bass solo by mick karn. this super sound 45rpm 12- features a steven wilson edited 11.21 mins version of the original and on b-side jimi tenor s rearrange with some solos with flute and keyboard. file under: ambient techno

this is an album of deeply emotional music. it s not all heartfelt niceties and eye-welling moods though. rhythmic theory did after all come to light (or should that be dark) in the gloomy alleyways of uk soundsystem music begat from dubstep and all that other stuff. -creeper- is on hand to affirm that this is a record still steeped in true, stern moodiness, where a stalking sub line, some metallic percussion and an icy drone can still strike fear more than a thousand angry wobble basslines. it s worth noting how much attention has been given to shorter vignettes. as well as the aforementioned, cryptically titled -interlude-, -work of fiction- and -end (of forever)- both give insights into the places rhythmic theory cares to roam beyond the structure of a long form track. these are places where melancholic or downright ambiguous dispositions interplay with each other, from the synthetic to the earthly, the malevolent to the tender. in the end, even at its most monochromatic, nothing is black and white on rhythmic theory s debut album, and that s just fine with us.

energydream ep is entirely based on vocal house samples, deprived of their frenzy soul and arranged into a new melancholic mood. the frosty vibrations generated from the textures produced and the ambient arrangements bring the listener into a dimensionwhich lives within a purist vision of the dance floor and anastral journey. a typical approach which has been marking dave s productions for a long time.

with his project fred und luna musician rainer buchmüller (sugar ray buckmiller) from karlsruhe, germany is paying tribute to his favourite electronic oriented music by using its characteristics like repetition and beautiful melodies, putting them in a contemporary context and preserving their subtle and seductive charm. fred und luna play their self described elektrokraut (concerning songs that are basically kraut mixed with electronic elements) and krautelektro (which is elektro mixed with kraut elements). they live in karlsruhe which, like düsseldorf, lies next to the river rhine. perhaps karlsruhe is the new (neu) düsseldorf, with fred und luna (as pioneers/vanguard).

taylor deupree and marcus fischer created their expansive debut in a place of such graceful shapes (12k2021, 2011) over four days in a frigid, snow-covered new york only a few short months after they met. since then they have toured together, photographed, and written music together keeping the collaborative, creative energy up at every opportunity, wherever they find themselves. during a visit to the west coast in the summer of 2015, and after a long day in the studio creating, searching and ready to retire for the night, the two sat in tired silence contemplating the next day s approach. playing quietly in the background was a tape loop fischer had made earlier, filling the sonic cracks in the dark room. after fifteen or twenty minutes went by, with the sound of this loop having transfixed them, the two looked at the each other and said -this is it.- from there they formed a very focused conceptual process: two artists, two mono tape loops and four acoustic instruments, nothing more. creating one loop each of different lengths and recording the outputs of the reel-to-reel machines built-in speakers with microphones in the room, deupree and fischer started to craft their most restrained work yet, focusing on the raw beauty of such a limited system of creation. the title twine comes from the idea of the two tape loops as knots, as physical media, combining to form a single, more complex, piece. the seven tracks on the album are highly repetitive yet constantly shifting due to the asynchrony of the loops. all of the warm, tactile and dusty quality of the tape and vintage players is captured in the recordings and the listener can easily get lost in the slow, enveloping cycles. the instrumentation on twine is simple - electric piano, bells, stringed instruments... with careful and deliberate physical manipulations the sounds is subtlely abstracted, as can be heard on -buoy,- where the tape machine mechanics themselves join in the recording to create a piece suggestive of the abandoned dock the two photographed in iceland a couple of years earlier as it quietly knocked against the cold winter shore. imagery like this abounds through the tracks. slow, haunting melodies under a layer of warm tape hiss and accidental physical sounds give the listener plenty of room for imagination, reflection and the stirring up of lost memories. the intimacy of the tape loops combined with the loneliness of the sounds gives twine a complexity beyond its simple form. deupree and fischer have created a intensely focused new work that draws upon all of their creative interactions since their 2010 debut.

trolldans once again opens its musical tome of fairy tales, this time featuring the gif-ted sound sculptor edanticonf. in his chapter of the trolldans volume, edanticonf presents us with the three crying fairies. it is a tale in four parts of desire and tears - as every good story should be. the first fairy tells us about a lake in the deep woods where a young princess called tuvstarr once lost her gold heart. no creature of the forest could convince the princess to let it go, and so she stayed there by the black lake until she turned into a beautiful flower. the second fairy tells us how the princess, before she lost her precious necklace, would ride like the wind through the forest on the back a grand elk. the princess loved the thrill and the elk loved the princess. vril steps in and actually lets us hear the noble elks heart racing from both the pace and his devotion to tuvstarr. the third fairy ends endanticonfs beautiful but melancholy tale with a glimmer of hope: by the darkest of lakes, the loveliest flo-wers grow. the end.

the first r&b rec record is born from the encounter of two artists in the gloomy baltimore of the beginning of the millennium, after years in which their artistic roads proceeded in a very much parallel manner, without ever physically crossing paths, driven by their passion for analog instrumentation and the desire to find and create new rhythmics and sounds. it is in 2013 the two decide to join their forces to create their own personal vision of techno music and dance music in general. resulting in a hot and scratchy vinyl that combines dark, percussion sounds well known from detoit techno, with the sought after rhythmic of breakbeat and drum and base, of the british nineties. also packed with influences of acid-house, this record incorporates features of the so influential 80 s punk era, finally sinking it s roots in the psychedelic currents of the 70 s. the result is a brand new genre which is difficult, if not impossible to define. a unique way of defining dance music, in all its aspects, which is identified under the name of spaceship surgery techno.

rustling pillows, irate flamingos, drums thumped feverishly in basements. tweaked cassettes, noisy buses, restless hands tapping dashboard rhythms in thick dusk traffic. found sound, musique concre&#768,,te, stuttering drum loops forged in twilight boredom — hyperedited into ruminative dance collages. pillow by mischa lively (ne&#769,,e barton, blake): 4 songs, 25 minutes, a hybrid of exertion and uplift. pillow marks both the nashville native’s debut for racecar and the denouement of an evolution. once rigidly stuck to notions of how rhythm should be utilized — barton is a trained percussionist — the producer eventually realized the potential in limiting himself to a minimalist diet of new and archived drum loops from which to build songs. studying myriad treatment techniques, barton then executed a vision unmoored to binary ideas about “live” versus “electronic,” blurring lines as he composed with an ear for idm, dub, techno, and ambient music. hence pillow: a vast assemblage of rhythm and sound performed to mirror the spirit of dance records. indeed, the 12” is as ripe for warehouse parties as meditative nights alone, headphones affixed, candles lit, marveling at the mysteries humans conjure with physical limbs. “rhythm is instinctual to me,” barton remarks when asked about his preference for recording analogue patterns versus beats sourced from 1s and 0s. “and i dislike sitting nearly as much as working from computers.” movement, then, is a virtue to barton, and in mischa lively he’s found a taut, elegant, propulsive vehicle in which to explore it.
