multi instrumentalist and deep house master lars bartkuhn returns to utopia records following his nomad ep in april with a 10 minute masterpiece, an ode to the massai . an epic journey of such depth and positive spirit it perhaps deserves to render a genre all to itself. with its musicality, complex arrangement and phrasing massai is a timeless and personal statement from bartkuhn as he seeks the essence in what dance music can and possibly should be. as a young child growing up in frankfurt, bartkuhn penned his first pieces of music with a synthesizer and sequencer, bought for him by his parents upon realising their son s obsession with music. mastering the guitar as a teenager bartkuhn fell deeply in love with the music of pat metheny, keith jarrett and john coltrane and styles such as soul, funk, brasilian sounds, minimal, dance, and others which is heard in his music today. by the mid 90 s bartkuhn began to explore the deep and soulful side of house music and formed lamaya productions and the now legendary record label needs (not wants) together with his older brother marek bartkuhn and dj yannick. needs rapidly became a synonym for soulful, high quality music and while labeled a house music imprint it was lars input that lead the trio to explore alternative, and at the time unorthodox, musical influences that allowed for original textures and arrangements to be included in their productions. countless remix commissions followed and their sound travelled worldwide with works for francois kevorkian, jazztronik, ennio morricone, atjazz to name a few. to date bartkuhn has produced five solo albums all of which demonstrate a never ending creative flow of ideas and artistic diversity, complexity and passion. after some years away from the dance music scene, residing in brasil, lars decided to continue this journey on volcov s neroli records, followed by a 12- for alex bradley s phonica affiliated utopia records. the latter release, nomad has found its way into the sets of the likes of jeremy underground paris, hunee, antal, ron trent, rainer truby, bicep and mcde to name just a few. it s at this point that bartkuhn gives us massai...his self proclaimed finest work

this june session victim return to delusions of grandeur imprint with their third studio album.listen to your heartis the result of a year of cross-continental scripting, started in their hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in san francisco�s room g studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 lpsee you when you get there. here we present the first of three lp samplers containing four tracks each, cut nice and loud for the vinyl crew. bring it back gets things rolling with session victim�s trademark live drum breaks, looped up pads and hooky vocal samples. only good vibes here, with uplifting keys bringing a warm and soulful edge whilst shimmering juno notes add a floaty element to get lost in. next up we have if we can make it here, the title being something of an in-joke with the boys when they find themselves in the more remote or far-flung corners of the world performing their music to an appreciating crowd. the track is based around a simple yet beautiful 4-bar chord progression repeating throughout and shows svm in a playful and jazzy mood, managing to include soloing flute and marching snare drum rhythms without as much of a flinch!moons and flowers is up next, another sublime slice of hazy house music with a wonderful organic and live sound palette. echoing rhodes licks join dubby synth fx, adding waves of colour whilst the gentle vocal provides the icing on the space-cake. lastly we have the hatch, which winds things down somewhat for a lovely, somewhat stoned interlude track which is over all too soon. an impeccable demonstration of retro-inspired yet forward thinking house,listen to your heartsees session victim at the top of their game.

next up on accidental jnr are 2 club ready tracks from sydney producer cassius select that straddle genres somewhere between techno, bassline and hardcore. 90 is a gurgling brutal post-dubstep wobble fest at a house tempo whilst herd offers up select�s trademark idiosyncratic vocal snippets wrapped up in most broken and shuffled of techno rhythm . cassius select lives in the undefined sonic boroughs of the hardcore continuum. his first ep explored the grittier end of techno under australian label hunter gatherer followed by a 12- of unstable rhythm workouts under dj haus� uttu label. the toronto native is hell bent on inciting movement in the most unorthodox ways. sonics crush genre-defining sounds into a pastiche of cryptic one liners and side eyes. drums that invoke an impossible sense of swing and momentum. most importantly select�s sound defines itself on the mission to deconstruct the world around him,to level out the playing field so everyone can have a bite. this year, select joins with uk imprint accidental jr. to release a two-track fury of sound that snarls with every grimace.

ibiza resident and darling of the white isle, davina moss returns once more to hot creations. having released on jamie and lee�s imprint in 2015, moss returns with two original cuts whilst cuartero supplies the remix. oh mama opens with tribal rhythms and a driving energy set against the enticing vocals of issa elle while like a proper star concludes with a dynamism and groove reminiscent of ibiza�s hedonistic parties. best newcomer at the dj mag awards in 2015, cuartero transforms oh mama into an after party dream drenched in rolling drums. the spanish dj and producer is no stranger to hot creations having previously released twice on the label. davina moss has been producing and djing for over a decade with a musical career that has allowed her to travel the world and release on a variety of labels, including viva music, pacha recordings, upon you and do not sleep among others.

following lone aka matt cutlers stunning sixth album levitates hallucinogenic joyride through breakbeats, he returns to r&s with ambivert tools the first in a series of eps for the floor returning to hypnotic 4/4 excursions. inspired in no small part by the rich seam of house that he�s been excavating with his fine magicwire imprint, a refreshed cutler delivers an ep stacked with sure-fire bullets, crafted for his intoxicating dj sets. first up is crush mood - crunching drums, lush resampled chords and dulcet female vox combine into a heady, peak-time rush. chroma comes off like a lost 90s anthem, with its shimmering vibes, airy chords and bumpy rhythm track. b-side closer from a past life could well be the strongest track on the ep - hazy emulator ii chords, spiral arpeggios, gooey bass and woozy african percussion that finds lone digging deeper into some of his more esoteric house music influences. ambivert tools finds cutler a true master, at the top of his game - taking all hes learned over his many years of beat exploration and condensing it down into rugged house stacked full of nagging melody / harmony that elegantly pays tribute to bygone years whilst simultaneously feeling fresh and vital to 21st century dance floors.

while david moufang, also known as move d, certainly needs no introduction, the label polyfon remained a tip for insiders. it might seem like a long shot, but that�s probably what led to the fact that the paths of david moufang and wolfram both � one of the polyfon founders � crossed a few years back. the erfurt located imprint was mostly recognized for its underdog releases from berlin-based tomtomgroove (the funkman), steffen baldo aka ugly drums from cologne (basement amusement park, the next room) and even workshops mastermind lowtec who released his critically acclaimed angstrom ep with the thuringian label.

* mikal takes his first bow for dust audio in the form of the spirited ep . the break and bass craftsman reigns down an assault of almighty weight for the imprint which holds no barred. * off the back of his critically acclaimed wilderness album on metalheadz, mikal continues to seek out the dance floor through his precision target and locks on for a serious assault of the senses. * the ep�s title track �spirited� see�s the sinister intro build up and transform into a bass laden drop. the stepping drums and jungle infused shuffles entwine with the ghost vocal, whilst the modulated bass will move even the harshest drum n bass skeptics. unrelenting throughout. * the flip sees mikal spread his considerable studio talent over two further tunes of constant surprise. low note wastes no time in getting to the drop before you�ve had chance to take a breath. a thunderous one note bass underpins the mid ranged reece and stabs whilst the chunky drums compliment the tidy percussion nicely. a haunting vocal then sets off another 16 bars of unclouded rawness. * linear finishes the ep with aplomb. synth chords open up into what you might expect to be a lovely liquid-esque style roller� think again! mikal takes that premise and turns it upside down and inside out before bringing the dirty funk. keeping in line with the 2 tunes before, this isn�t for the faint hearted. definitely one for the drum & bass purest, who may well be dancing, but will also be taking down mental notes!
