savas pascalidis releases heavy new ep brain waves on atrophic society savas pascalidis is an artist who needs little in the way of introduction. having a career that spans the last 25 years, and releases on a staggering number of great labels (gigolo records, kurbel, non series, mote evolver, stockholm ltd, children of tommorow, skudge, figure and many more), were proud to welcome savas to the atrophic society family. brain waves sees further exploration of the techno that defines savas’ sound. savage, grooving and dripping in nuance, all four cuts on this ep will set the night on fire. distant dreams is a tunnelling beast that twists and turns over itself with insistent percussive slaps and grooving bass, underpinning a driving synth line that stacks up to create a furious ep opener. there were no parts to work from to make a remix with, so in a total class move echologist drops a cover mix of the b1 track resonate, though it could be said that it’s inspired by all the original tracks on the ep. he strips it back to the bare necessities and propels it forward in true echologist style. the original of resonate is noisey and blustery as the title would suggest, hissing and bleeping over a mid range bassline that tastefully peaks and troughs for the length of the journey. finally, rounding out the ep in total class, subminimal crescendo’s with layers of noise and delay over a funk-fuelled rhythm. all four tracks on this forward thinking ep for atrophic society are essential machine-made music and an outstanding addition to savas body of work.

a1/ guehi jean pantalon s craqué guéhi jean is a key figure of ivorian music and many of his records mixing funk, jazz and afrobeat are sought after nowadays. having left africa in order to make it in france, he recorded this digital afrobeat hit in paris, then went back to his native country where he died in 2012. despite his talent, guéhi jean didn t get the recognition he deserved.
a2/ michel conte & cie s magoshan a disco anthem composed for quebec cultists wearing flares, or the main theme from an obscure series? anyway it is time to acclaim magoshan s pulsing come back on the dancefloor!
b1/ jean-michel gascuel s dominus this french composer who collaborated with pierre schaeffer was also a great lyricist working for the likes of vivian vee or suzy andrews, and a fashion designer. with its latin touch, this track is a little ufo standing out of the rest of his french productions, so let us be blessed by dominus domine dominarum.
b2/michel robidoux les planètes this track by composer michel robidoux featured on a kidisk with a book called -visitons les planètes avec goldorak- and was released in canada in 1980. this incredible space jam was chosen as a macaroon for this new ep – our tribute to an amazing composer who wrote more than 325 songs and even collaborated with leonard cohen.

roberto aglieri is a noted italian flutist and composer, and his 1987 album ragapadani stands as one of his finest achievements. archeo recordings are ever hip to the finest treasures hidden away in the folds of esoteric music, italian or otherwise, and have done a great service in reissuing the album so that it might reach a wider audience. on this limited white marble edition of the album, aglieri s flute sounds haunting and evocative over the range of delicate synth treatments, largely orbiting the minimal realm but with a naive charm that makes the music wholly accessible at the same time. soothing, thoughtfully crafted music for tender times.

new york’s dj spider returns to rekids with four murky vinyl-only cuts this november. a highly respected label owner, dj spider is well known for helming esteemed imprints like plan b, sub level sounds and btu music. as a producer he has made appearances on the likes of the trilogy tapes, bleed, killekill and vanguard sound!, whilst last year saw him make his debut on rekids. returning to the imprint, the american artist follows dj deep, jon hester and fbk for the fourth outing in the rekids special projects vinyl series. opening with ‘mobius strip revisited’, a squelching bass line and rolling percussive loops underpin ethereal pads and airy atmospheres before an extended keyboard solo plays over inspired chord progressions and a grooved low-end to give ‘antikythera mechanism part 2’ an improvised feel. on the flip we have ‘sub-atomic vibrations’, providing a series of irresistible lead synth melodies and crunchy drum compositions followed by ‘struggles with phantoms’, an unrelenting rhythm section lays the foundation for an evolving mid-range giving the release a stylish close

following a run of local transmissions from a sagittariun, crump, rob smith and atki2, idle hands turns its attention to berlin and the straight-up, no-nonsense techno thrust of johanna knutsson and hans berg. both respected artists and djs in their own right, the pair have been turning out 12inches together for the free spirit society, klasse and crime city disco over the past few years, but most importantly they ve been steering the excellent ufo station recordings as a vessel for their punchy, primal techno tracks. the sound on this ep taps into the pure form of stern, dark dancefloor tackle favoured at idle hands – no extraneous filler, plenty of space in the mix, but equally built with warmth and personality rather than monochrome functionality. if you need further proof, just look to the fact the ep is named after a swedish soap opera from the 90s. the bleeps and bass tones that pulse through -taggen- are so finely crafted they need not skip and dance around the arrangement. the melodic interplay on -klimax- is subtle but ultimately uplifting and optimistic where so much techno concerns itself with oppressive gloom. -bimbo- finds the pair embracing a more psychedelic approach, but even here the modulating effects processes are kept within certain boundaries so as to not dilute the impact on the floor. after all, this is music to dance to, to be felt over a large system (where possible). moving from leftfield bass excursions to minimalist 2-step, uk techno and now onto this much more continental sound, themälarviken ep continues to widen the range of idle hands musical tastes without losing sight of the complete picture.

recording and touring together on and off for several years now, sonic journeyman dj vadim and californian songwriter katrina blackstone unveil their long awaited full-length album ‘double sided’, released on bbe music. after providing a pair of stellar guest appearances on vadim’s 2014 dubcatcher album, katrina blackstone joined vad on tour and the duo have been steadily laying down tracks ever since. eschewing samples in favour of drum machines, guitars and a dizzying array of synths, vadim’s compositions on ‘double sided’ range from dubby downtempo grooves to upbeat afroboogie business. katrina’s crystal clear vocals, catchy melodies and highly relatable lyrics provide the perfect foil for vadim’s raw productions.

funkadelic have created an enduring legacy, and the power of their impact is visceral in detroit. their records not only played with genre, but possessed a diabolical sense of humour that led to music domination by the late 70s with parliament, funkadelic, parlet, bootsy’s rubber band and the brides of funkenstein all releasing albums the same year for two years in a row. the music itself is beyond stereotype, but equally huge is that they were a black band not allowing themselves to be limited by anyone else’s notions of who they could be, having a massive impact on the next generation of detroit music, detroit techno. but more than just techno, it is a freedom of thinking that extends beyond boxes, so we included all sorts of today s generation of detroit musicians and producers to show the wide range of music that was funkadelic and how these ideas are still contemporary, they endure and inspire.

airhead has put out some great music this year. kicking off with the radiophonic ice of kazzt for mumdance s different circles and just recently the low slung cristobal on ps records his production chops get bolder by the minute. it s no surprise seeing as he spent much of the previous year producing key tracks for the incredible -1-800 dinosaur presents trim- album alongside bullion and boothroyd as well as regularly touring and writing with long-time musical partner james blake. back with another 12- on hemlock, his first since 2014 s rolling october / macondo this time the sound is dustier, warmer, but packing twice the punch all the while retaining his signature understated wild-man groove. both tracks are capable on dancefloor whilst richly layered, packed with detail and arranged for maximum connectivity with contemporary beat styles such as house, techno and breaks. what happened to ricky martin? shaded is the twisted latin stepper you didn t know you needed, so much, right now. polished drums dug into a tweaky sci-fi soundbed make way for the curveball drop not every dj will be able to style out but those brave few that do will reap the reward. captain, we have an incoming transmission. by now, antipolo will be on the long-range scanners of a several fleets in this sector and is finally ready for replication and deployment. beaming out to the far reaches of the dancefloor we have bass, breakbeats and synth hooks but not as we know it together forming an advanced composite bond of extreme strength and malleability.

over the last decade, huxley has produced a number of huge hits that fuse myriad four four styles into exciting and arresting new forms. his diverse lp from 2014 showed off a range of styles from peak time to downtempo to jungle and came on aus, while other labels like hypercolour have also showcased his ever subtly evolving style. here he is in fine form once more.

zen in space makes a prominent debut for moonshoe records with yellow jazz ep . the record captivates the feeling of a jam session when the vibe is on point. soaked in instrumentation, the record feels spacious. strong percussive grooves guide the listener through a range of moods that each compliment each other effectively. throughout the ep a combination of spoken word and soulful vocal hooks give a add a tasteful human element.
fourth&bak features a spoken-word that whispers atop of juicy guitar licks and a wobbly sub-bass line, but it s an aching, soulful vocal melody that ties the jam together.

sonic groove’s latest high octane addition to the roster is berlin based british artist rebekah. rebekah has led a successful artist and dj career in the techno scene over the past five years with releases on the prolific clr and soma imprints as well as her own labels elements and decoy. her soma album from a few months ago entitled “fear paralysis” shows her artistic skills of having a wide range of flexibility as she weaved through many styles of techno from deep to hard.
taking her artistry into further realms of sound construction, rebekah ventures into a much harder industrial techno terrain with her latest four cut release entitled “into the black”. designed specifically with sonic groove in mind. “loose mechanics” & “conquest” are ferocious industrialized peak time techno pulverizers that will turn stone into dust.
“into the black” is an advant garde broken beat track with a pitch shifting, hauntingly dissonant string drone would be the perfect score for a sci-fi horror flick while “war cry” turns the blackness into a lighter shade of grey with it’s complexly designed chord driven emotions layered over a very intricately programmed drum rhythm.

somne debuts on just this. the italian producer, whose real name is federico maccherone, presents his first release of 2017 – a solo ep marrying the same ethereal, wide-angle synthesis and intricate drum programming that appears on standout work for boddika’s nonplus imprint and the afterlife label. more than ever, maccherone shows his range – rolling, meditative recordings sit comfortably alongside some more overtly dance floor material, with both approaches bound by the same high-end production values listeners and dj’s alike have come to expect from the somne project. in various ways, the ep offers a certain degree of insight into maccherone’s dual identity as a producer of both clinical, dance-floor fare as well as a cerebral, leftfield work – and in turn, how the artist draws together these two strands of creative endeavour to craft unique and profoundly emotive electronic music. nods to classic idm and ambient sit at the periphery of the recordings, although the main focus is on the propulsive, contemporary techno derivatives – from warping, half-time opener divided love, with its crisp, white noise washes and clinical use of distortion – through to endgame’s exacting, peak-time drive. and whilst the form shifts across the ep from half-time, polyrhythmic work to more direct 4x4 compositions – everything remains bound by the same exquisite, otherworldly atmosphere that touches on the grandiose whilst maintaining a gloriously introspective bent.

nice price deal !!! following on from the in demand subliminal kid release earlier this year, this sick new ep from label boss matt o brien serves up a fulsome diet of deep, dark and mindbogglingly wonky house and techno, in a release that is the apex of matts production skills to date. kicking off, the aptly named gauntlet throws down fuzzily tweaked and flanged raw beats, married to dizzying, tremelous synths, darkside stabs and general dancefloor frenzy. dodaso flips the script, sounding like a million orthogonal genres colliding and combining in deep dub sub space, underpinning the delicate melody while splurges of colour obliterate your senses. this is very different to anything else out there and will appeal to a wide range of djs and floors. rounding off the ep, blackwood freestyle at first sounds deceptively simple, hiding its dark secrets like an insane clockwork puzzle, unfolding like hell raisers lament configuration with each listen revealing uni-maginable contortions that pull you further into the groove.

jamie paton has been a regular fixture on emotional especial since the label first came to light, conjuring up a seductive blend of leftfield dance music with a broad range of influences. this time around he s turning out some of his remixes, leading in with the sweaty, dense throb of sexy merlins see you in the dark. guy schlaloms habibi by way of contrast becomes a lighter confection peppered with bubbly synth lines and an almost poppy persuasion. blancmanges feel me has a more cosmic lilt in its voluminous tones, and overdrive by gatos negros drifts out on an off-kilter kind of boogie for all manner of deviant dancers to get head-nodding to.

french artist marc nguyen tan released two renowned albums in the early 2003 and 2006 under the artist name colder on trevor jackson’s seminal label output recordings. in november 2015, colder returned after a decade in hiatus with his third, highly acclaimed album many colours followed by two other lps titled the rain and goodbye in 2016. kasper bjorke is one of the most acclaimed and versatile producers and djs hailing from denmark. kasper has released five renowned solo albums over the past decade and remixed a wide range of artists, from rebolledo to weval. the two artists first started working together when kasper remixed colders single ”your kind” - and colder in return remixed bjørke s track ”marbled blood”. the idea to take their collaboration even further was formed when the two of them met in person during sonar festival in barcelona in 2015. in 2016 they then teamed up in the redbull studio in paris for a three day improvised recording session. the result is the black magic ep in stores on september 8th via throne of blood. a collection of five raw, driving post punk / new wave and techno influenced compositions, recorded via the studio ssl desk in paris, using hardware synths and drum machines played through some exotic vintage effects. colder recorded his mesmerizing vocals on the spot along with french drummer julien sabourin and saxophone player thibaut javoy. the ep will be followed by a stellar remix package from the golden filter (optimo music), mutado pintado (paranoid london) and french producer and dj pilooski.

another very fine release in asthmatic kitty s library catalog music series, this album comes from william ryan fritch, a prolific film composer, sound recordist and multi-instrumentalist from oakland, ca. fittingly, music for honey and bile takes on the character of a cinematic score, collecting a number of varied instrumentals that show an incredible range to fritch s diverse talents. in addition to the composition and production, fritch performs virtually everything on the album, playing piano, guitars, violin, viola, cello, flute, clarinet, sax, trumpet, marimba, vibraphone and dulcimer to name but a relative few. this is seriously impressive stuff, and chamber pieces such as too anxious to dream , shadows like despondent ghosts and tongues that chatter like pigeons sound like the work of a large ensemble rather than just one man. the variety exhibited on the album is breathtaking too, switching between large-scale productions complete with multilayered strings and percussion to more intimate pieces like eggshells and the manipulated piano drone minimalism of chewed their nails to caustic red pads .

u-roy was a true reggae pioneer, dubbed the originator for good reason. bursting onto the jamaican scene in the early 1970s, he pioneered the vocal approach called “toasting,” which in addition to bringing jamaican music into a new era, was also heavily influential on an american vocal style also in its infancy: rapping. following up the record store day 2017 release of u-roy’s classic dread in a babylon, traffic entertainment group now brings us a very welcome reissue of the vocalist’s 1976 full-length (and fourth) album, natty rebel, which has been out of print for more than 30 years. produced by tony robinson (known for his work with big youth, lloyd parks, the gladiators and many more), the album’s 11 cuts range from bouncier and sometimes even disco-tinged grooves – “have mercy,” “go there natty” and the album lead-off, “babylon burning” – to the classic roots stepping that drew fans to the legendary jamaican vocalist over his long career – including “so jay jah say” and “natty kung fu.” at its core, this is a deep journey into the heart of rasta living, spoken by one of jamaica’s most underrated dub and roots legends, and it’s one of the strongest full-lengths in his expansive catalog. whether you are experiencing u-roy for the first time, or replacing your decades-old original lp, diving into this reissue of natty rebel is one hell of a way to spend an afternoon. or, if you’re not careful, a week or two.

for fans of the italian avant-garde, few names inspire the loyalty and devotion offered to the percussionist and composer lino capra vaccina - a perfect emblem of the country’s extraordinary movement of musical minimalism. he first gained note as a member of aktuala, a project which laid the groundwork for a entire generation of practitioners following in their wake - creating a hybrid of rock, avant-garde, and ancient musics, while incorporating a diverse number of sonic traditions from across the globe - african, middle eastern, indian, etc. vaccina’s career as composer has been marked by two distinct features, an incredibly high bar of quality and ambition, and a tragically slim amount of recorded output. following his departure from aktuala, he worked extensively with others - juri camisasca, franco battiato, etc, and within the short lived super group telaio magnetico, but his astounding solo efforts have been slow to emerge. in 1978 he released the legendary lp antico adagio, and wouldn’t be heard from again until 1992’s equally extraordinary l attesa. fortunately, over the last few years, the milan based imprint die schachtel, has embarked on a multifaceted project - reissuing vaccina’s hard to find lps for a new generation, as well as offering a range of stunning archival recording which had never before seen the light of day. their latest release, an lp entitled echi armonici da antico adagio, falls into the later category. it is nothing short of a momentous even

roots vocalist barry brown has an inimitable style that has long made him a favourite of reggae enthusiasts. drawing from the popular phrasing of horace andy, but morphing it into his own delivery through the kind of wordless slurring that occasionally resembles the sound of a quacking duck, brown found his way into the jamaican music scene through the many amateur west kingston talent contests of the early 1970s, along with fellow aspiring talents such as johnnie clarke, sugar minott and the african brothers, and the mighty diamonds. he also honed his vocal skills on local west kingston sound systems such as tape tone, together with other young dancehall-oriented youth such as barrington levy, sammy dread, roy taylor and tristan palmer. there are still conflicting claims as to who was the first to record brown, with production veteran bunny ‘striker’ lee and sugar minott among the contenders, but in any case, during the late 1970s and early 1980s, he produced a range of captivating work for various producers, much of which is rightly coveted today. ‘ital rock’ appeared on barry’s 1983 lp i’m still waiting, issued by rocktone international, a spin-off of sugar minott’s black roots outfit, based in queens, new york (with a further branch in toronto), the b-side has dean fraser’s previously unreleased electrifying saxophone cut, rescued from dub plate obscurity by jah fingers.
