gravitas, talib kwelis sixth solo album, began to take shape in may, during the weeks following the release of kwelis fifth solo album, prisoner of conscious. loaded with guests, prisoner of conscious was well received and reviewed, and gained talib many new fans to add to his already large following. however, kweli soon found himself wanting to record more personal material and really document his journey thru music. when singer ryan leslie, who created the platform that kweli is using to sell gravitas, approached him with the idea of selling direct to fan, songs that were just rough ideas began to fully form in kwelis head.

when luke solomon got in touch and said he wanted to work with local talk we felt both honoured and happy, especially since we have been fans for a long time and mats actually booked him to his raw fusion club in the late 90s. he has been around long enough to be considered a legend within the scene. we couldnt agree more. lost channels, a 130 bpm piano driven and punk-dubby new york inspired house track comes in two versions. the raw & stripped version is exactly what the name says, sharp snares & hi-hats, piano chords, a driving rhythm with lukes trademark percussion sprinkled on top. the live piano version is actually the original version and is peppered with more of everything. bubbly fx, more of that staccato piano and of course that muscular bassline. for remix duties it is the return of an old local talk friend, wil maddams. it seems like wil has spent some time in detroit since last time. this remix sounds like something that would come straight out of the d, his clever drum programming holds this track together with its deep pads and bubbling bassline. it is a retro (but fresh) techno jam for 2014.

datassette aka john davies has been recording music for over a decade, carving out a niche as a respected purveyor of electro and electronica. he has recorded and self-released an impressive discography from cd-r, net-labels and small independents, but it was his album for ai records in 2008 that first brought him to our attention. he has also remixed the likes of röyksopp, mark archer and al tourettes. datassette continues apollos tradition of releasing rich, musical electronica and follows on nicely from classic releases from the likes of robert leiner, biosphere, david morley and andrea parker.

a few words by steffen bennemann: i was in loose contact with aggelos (dream weapons) for a few years, watching him from a distant with great interest. in 2012, he sent me his debut lp on inner ear under his fantastikoi hxoi moniker and it quickly became my favourite album of the year. when i told him our plans for holger he sent me some of his more electronic leaning music. i was instantly captured by the driving, trippy kraut techno songs which show homage to the psychedelic sounds of the 60s and 70s while holding their own in the here and now. exactly our cup of tea.

churches schools and guns. a provocative name for a provocative album of techno from one of the genres most consistently intriguing producers, lucy. this, his second solo album, pushes forward from his debut full-length, 2011s wordplay for working bees, and firmly establishes him in a league of his own.

for over 12 months thomas feriero aka avatism, our friend and label partner, has been staying at home and working on his album. he moved to berlin to work on it and now sadly (for us) yet (gladly) for him he is moving back to milan. poof! just like that. so what did this year entail exactly? well for some of us not much. we got to see him in his studio comfy pants a couple of times (he wears slippers) we heard his studio woes, ate pasta with him, drank beers and of course got to hear his album at every juncture. while this self-imposed exile may have been a little worrisome the result is fortunately spectacular. adamant is a glimpse into how a city shapes a life and how intrinsically life then shapes music.

with a self-proclaimed goal to showcase newcomers as well as established artists, melodymathics hands out their second punch with a killer track by detroit veteran gari romalis. gari is at the forefront of the detroit techno scene, working close with terrence parker, mike banks, cliff thomas and labels such as tresor, transmat, soma and many more. his productions clearly show that his 30 years experience djing made him realize what works on the dancefloor. the web on melodymathics ltd.002 is a sublime example of soulful keys combined with funky rhythm, resulting in the ultimate dj tool.

scalameriya is already a name that any techno fan should have heard of. his recognizable and infectious sound design has scored him enourmous support from the leading names of the scene. this time we have a special, limited vinyl edition with 4 of his solo originals. the track names suggest exactly what we can expect: broken, post apocalyptic techno tracks from out of space

gacha is a young artist originally from georgia, now operating in berlin, this second ep for apollo records is an excellent six tracker that fits the apollo chillout manifesto perfectly. his music is a cinematic, glacial mix of beautiful melodies, treated guitars and tender drum programming, and two tracks on this release see him working in tandem with natalie beridze who adds her ethereal vocals for standout tracks *saysea* and *atlas*. elsewhere on the ep gacha continues the form of his last ep, working his influences from classic electronica to garage into his trademark deep and atmospheric sound.

janis guckes is a friendly musician from frankfurt. his love of music has led him to many a band and project. socialized in the robert johnson club, where he found his way to club music in the late nineties, he now produces excellent house in his own kitchen. he also runs a label with two friends, >house is ok<, where he released his first records.
