attempting to pigeonhole 79.5 into something as narrow as a single genre would be an ill advised, if not impossible task. the new york city band sounds like someone spinning a radio dial with such passionate intensity that all the stations blend together into a single, transcendent, almost spiritual force. its disco to the beat of modern house, its a supremes cover of a cardi b banger, its roland kirk playing jazz through one saxophone, funk through another, and the most earwormy pop tune the 1970s could muster through a third. its an experience one so effecting that with only a self-released 12inch single in circulation, 79.5 had been written up twice in the new yorker on the merit of their live sets alone. their debut album predictions is produced by leon michels and was recorded at the diamond mine in queens the old school way, with the whole band playing the songs in one take and captured to analog tape.

after the great success of his new-classsical album voyage de la planete last year marc romboy releases a special 7inch single according to the album. and once again as he experiments with his sound pushing the boundaries between classical and electronic music to create both an emotional and atmospheric experience. the title track voyage de la planete was especially taped at the robert-schumann-saal in düsseldorf to create a highgrade recording of each classical instrument. the difference between a studio roon and a concert hall is remarkable. another highly acclaimed track, la lune et letoile comes along with an outstanding piano only version which improves once again that less can be so much more.

too $hort’s legendary 1992 effort “shorty the pimp” is back in effect on vinyl thanks to the hip hop preservationist at get on down. though many don’t consider this to be one of too $hort’s strongest releases, the project did move well over 80.000 in its first week of release landing at number 6 on the billboard top 200. taking the title from the incredibly rare 1973 blaxploitation film, too $hort does what he does best on shorty the pimp: funk beats, oastful braggadocio, a few conscious rhymes and layers of straight up pimp talk. the lyrical content can certainly be considered comical and entertaining. “shorty the pimp” is also a stand out project for producer ant banks who did many of the beats for the project, his first works with too $hort with many more to follow over the next decade. oddly enough, one of the best comments on “shorty the pimp” comes from a random guy on the internet who commented on his experience listening to the release, “i ran my car into a tree after listening to ‘it don’t stop’ definitely made for cars with the booming systems!”

children of tomorrow will celebrate soon its 10 years anniversary. the label was created by emmanuel ternois back in the day and being joined by arnaud le texier in 2011. since then they focused on techno producing amazing artists, to name few: terrence dixon, zadig, tensal, antigone, oscar mulero, jonas kopp, samuli kemppi etc... children of tomorrow is now presenting the first album from arnaud le texier. after almost 30 years dj-ing around the world and almost 20 years producing. signing many releases over the years and always busy delivering dance floor releases, it s been a long wait to finally get an album from arnaudon his first album we can feel that he wanted to tell a story and to express something deeper with his production experience. there is a different variety of techno that stretches from ambient / broken beat / hypnotic / raw techno along with subtles grooves, wondrous atmospheres & sonic textures. on a side the album opens with dusk, an ambient atmospheric mid-tempo track with sonic sounds that is a perfect intro.pattern 2 starts with drones and blip sounds and a broken beat groove follows with a pad that sounds like a voice coming from the space. the track ends with some modular click sounds that make the whole track clever. followed by the album title granular therapy, a deep techno track with modular bass line and melancholic pad. a perfect track to play in after or to warm up a party.the b side is more dedicated to the dance floor with black nympheas that is a proper dark modern techno with a grinding bass line and magic drones. a simple beat makes the track evolve in a nice way. blade pass frequency is 4/4 effective techno with a 909 kick, a syncope acid bass line and a pad that sends you to another dimension. it is a powerful track but with a sense of deepness and sensibility that arnaud can achieve sometimes. this side closes with binary sun dawn which is an ambient track with melody that has a jazz feeling mixed with dark atmospheres, sonic drones and water drops. the c side opens with mono driver, a minimal track with a little synth that stays until the end repetitively until it makes you travel and lose your mind. deep and dance floor at the same time.

articulat is the (new) artist name of ovidiu stanciu, a romanian dj/producer living in rotterdam. under the moniker manikin, he worked on several concept albums with titles like popular mechanics, taxim and grandma s attic revival over the last couple of years. while selecting tracks for this debut ep it felt like curating a best of , and we chose to put three thriving and pounding slow-beat bangers on the a side, and to show more of articulat s versatile style on the b-side. expect experimental electronic songs inspired by themes like steampunk and romanian folklore, very precisely engineered to experience storytelling in the most physical way.

when looking for music to be released on magazine, our guideline has always been energy. the key question remains the same: does the artist have something important to say? does it have a sense of urgency? alex played us these tracks while visiting the magazine studio in cologne earlier this year and we were consumed by unadulterated rage. this is anything but a conceptual release, alex has not released this kind of music before. a side of alex manifests itself through these techno tracks, that most might not have known before. brutal yet beautiful, furious yet fragile. a berlin native who shaped his sense for techno by striving through his hometown and its infamous raves, alex is now one of the prominent protagonists of that scene – not only when regularly playing at berghain. the ep harnesses this experience perfectly, fully preserving the energy of the creation process by recording directly to tape. most productions may have suffered from this primitive method of locking sound into position, but not these tracks from a techno master.

some time around 20 years ago, the artist known as dub surgeon made an absorbing album of beautiful dub infused with ambiance, found sounds and horizontal rhythms. the lost future was recorded at the former amsterdam film academy where dub surgeon. the recording engineer for the project was ricardo villalobos. dub surgeon and ricardo villalobos then mastered it together, putting it through several vintage mixers and recording it to 2 inch tape. then, tragedy struck: a storm surged and ignited a fire that ravaged the studio. the master copy was thought to have been lost forever. dub surgeon stopped making music and disappeared into the shadows after just two eps on future dub in 2002/3. but one day 15 years later, totally out of the blue, he received a demo of the lost future. pay attention to this, it said. attached was a demo version of the long lost album and now, finally, it has a perfect and impossibly poetic home on dubais ark to ashes, which is named in homage to the story of lee scratch perry burning down his black ark studio to rid it of demons. sounding as fresh as ever, the lost future is an authentic dub experience with a story as special as the music itself.

“no security” captures a stand-out stones show, with the band on searing form during the closing leg of their american tour in san jose. treating the crowd to an up-close and personal experience and leaving a frenzy in their wake. the set list spans from the mid-sixties hit singles to the bridges to babylon album, including a bluesy, dramatic version of ‘midnight rambler’, a dark and swaggering ‘out of control’, and the rarely performed live, ‘some girls’ and ‘saint of me’. the show was an electrifying, anthem-packed, cross generational hot ticket, concluding yet another chapter from the band that wrote the book on rock ‘n’ roll.

repress: this is the sort of record that could only have been made by someone with a vast amount of experience. producer nick dunton has a decade s worth of releases behind him, and it shows. sketches of my life veritably skips between electronic sounds and styles. it s deeply rooted in techno and electronica and specifically the clean futurisms of detroit s belleville three but steadfastly refuses to stick to one particular groove. once offers heady dub techno enriched by cascading piano figures, lost love bittersweet electro. fallen and abandoned virtues, meanwhile, evoke memories of teenage nights lost in the otherworldly sounds of warps pioneering artificial intelligence compilations.

while ant plate has been insanely busy with a plethora of aliases on a multitude of labels recently, he s still found time to turn out some surefire heaters in the studio with long time sparring partner matt hunt. this release marks the first appearance of rhythm plate on vinyl only, but it s worth the wait. there s an epic scope to apathetic empathy, which features bashy 80s drum hits and squelchy bass front and centre, but soaring vocal licks and piano stabs that widen the track out beautifully. observed privacy is a more emotive cut laden with illustrious keys, abuser experience is a bright and bashy deep house belter and prototype night takes things down a slinky, acid-speckled route. rhythm plate still serving up the house music realness after nearly 20 years.

coming back for another round after his first ep for figure last summer, shlomi aber continues to explore different avenues of his multi-faceted sound, tying it all up in a nicely rounded package. setting the pace is driving opening track whistler, the producer showcasing his ability to craft something big but undoubtedly refined. he then lets old school drums cruise along gentle sways of washed out ambience, giving the deep heads something to really get into… back with more techno on the b-side, this time in true figure-style: lean, sharp, and utterly effective penetrate the system is sure to leave its mark and comes complete with an extended, separate intro, making for quite an experience. staying atmospheric to the end, aber chooses to step out in half-time, taking cues from dubstep as hollowed kicks carve out an endless tunnel that leads only ever deeper down the rabbit hole.

echocord’s colour sub-label returns early june with a four- track ep from eindhoven’s albert van abbe in the shape of ‘klangbilder’. dutch techno artist albert van abbe has nearly two decades of experience under his belt in various forms of musical and visual expression, releasing on his own vanabbe imprint, figure jams, semantica and no comment, as well as playing live and djing at hot spots across the globe such as berghain, tresor, dgtl and awakenings festival. ‘klangbilder 1’ leads with a robust rhythmic drive, employing bumpy toms, shuffled hats and lumpy kicks at its core as vacillating synths, tension building drones and menacing pizzicato strings develop throughout. ‘klangbilder 2’ takes things deeper next, retaining the dusty drums sound of the previous cut whilst stirring in airy ethereal pads and choppy, resonant stab sequences. ‘klangbilder 3’ kicks off the b-side with modulating synth whirrs, emotive organ tones and a muted drum tones throughout before ‘klangbilder 4’ closes the package, taking things beatless and cinematic via emotive synth leads, droning subs and expansive echoes.

allfeelings is releasing a 12- in dedication to his love for early dub techno coming out of berlin. the idea behind the title “untitled” is to give the listeners more space to interpret the tracks themselves rather than being distracted with any track names. as allfeelings music label is about the amalgamation of sounds and rhythms to bring about a visceral experience, this can be observed in the african inspired percussion on side a and the subtle changes and movement it has throughout its length. side b focuses more on easy listening with sounds and dry textures meandering slowly demanding the listener’s attention at all times. the other great thing about this record is it works really well pitched down which can be used to great effect during warm ups and after hours. this release has the support from ario and o:utlier from astral industries.

spring has finally landed and we have the perfect soundtrack for those long sunny afternoon in the park. we are glad to present explorer of the humankind for his first release with us. starting with stars in her eyes, a gentle track where the lyon newcomer use his voice as well as real drums for a smooth listening-experience. following in the same vein but a touch more upbeat is just a tool, a more playful funk-inspired piece. closing the a-side, share the love takes the tempo a bit higher and and shifts toward more club-friendly territories, houses goodness. turn that disc and get awake for i know, a disco-edit piece with trace of french heritage and filter action. lastly, deep inside takes us into a gentle profound dreamy state, moving more on the inside than with the feet.

when michaela meise performed at westgermany at kottbusser tor in berlin-kreuzberg on march 20, 2015, accompanying herself on the accordion, i was perplexed. i knew her first album from 2010, which was about hymns (»preis dem todesüberwinder«, originally released on clouds hill, available as a download and stream through my label from july 2018 on), but what she was playing weren’t spiritual songs?! i wanted to put this music out on my label: the songs sounded sad, aloof and wistful but also proud, determined and unerring. the album title »i am greek« is a tribute to melina mercouri’s album »je suis grecque!«, which was released in 1971 when mercouri was deprived of citizenship by the greek military junta. mercouri lived – like mikis theodorakis and many other cultural workers – in exile. meise’s album is dedicated to the chanson scene of post-war europe, whose songs were popularly folksy, but also political. some talk about the experience of war, the shoah and labor migration.

(recorded from 1993-2000) they were incredibly kind in saying it was the best demo they had ever heard and passed it on to octal records for release, sadly, that didn t materialize and since then these masters have been collecting dust in our cassette rack for nearly 20 years now. we ve spent months doing our best to restore the old tapes from our tascam 688, an 8 track cassette recorder purchased and abused since 1992 and to our ears still sounds quite impressive even by modern standards. we ve had nearly every component replaced and re-calibrated to bring this obsolete machine back to life, it s been a truly nostalgic experience re-visiting and redesigning these masters. we truly hope you enjoy reliving these magical times of music, very inspired by all that was happening in those years, there was just something in the air, an undeniable energy, long may it live on..

out-er sub-label pregnant void is proud to announce the release of hi.mo’s debut album “urtiis”. landing on double vinyl in june 2018, it is a fantastically absorbing showcase of the italian’s weird and wonderful fusion of various strains of sound from jazz to hip hop to classical. “the alteration of conventional musical patterns thrills me”, says the artist who is classically trained in piano and uses that knowledge to play with rules, structures and forms. influenced by idm, african drums, jazz and the interplay of chords, rhythm and harmony, hi.mo infuses his electro-acoustic productions with found sound samples and analogue and digital tools. this is a spelling-binding and intimate album that is filled with invention, but never at the expense of the overall experience, which is beautiful and beguiling throughout.
