repress - brainwaltzeras debut lp poly-ana follows quickly on the heels of the producers aescoba ep also released this year via film. across thirteen tracks of both previously released material and fresh excursions into the artists world, brainwaltzera explores sounds ranging from luscious, downtempo grooves and expertly reduced braindance cuts with nods to early 90’s experimental idm to harder, more caustic outings all bound together by a recurring theme of otherworldly ambience. taking its name from a variety of sources dear to the artist, including polyphonic analogue synthesizers and the pol-lyanna principle itself a theory that suggests individuals recall pleasurable experience more acutely than displeasing ones the title represents a meeting point in the artistic process between creative method and conceptual choices. production techniques range from more traditional hardware synthesis to the incorporation of a modified dot matrix printer acting as a modulation source for midi parameters. sample sources include vhs material from the produ-cer’s own childhood and ambient bullet train samples from an on-the-fly production session traveling from tokyo to kyoto. according to the enigmatic producer, memory and its fundamental role in the human experience is one of the central themes of the record. while the artists own experiences shaped the sound of the record, there is no attempt to impose them on the listener through blatant exposition.

utopia cloak arrives on film with six track ep, marina gardens. utilising both electronic & acoustic components, the british producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. the music explores a curious production aesthetic - at once half sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls & glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, utopia cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore - riffing on downtempo & idm with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks & rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure & songcraft. contrast is the key here, though - and utopia cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic per-cussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favour of a lush, rewarding lis-tening experience.

focusing on low-slung idm, acid and atmospheric electro with nods to krautrock & ambient sounds, steve hy-lands attraktta project gets an extended outing on the film label. across eight beautifully produced tracks, hyland - one of the founding members of ai records and subsequently concrete plastic, explores vibrant synthesis and intricate drum programming, with the music arriving at a sweet spot between home listening material & club-ready workouts for more intelligent dance floors. eschewing straightforward synth sequences in favour of blissed out - almost disharmonious sonics, hyland trans-mits a curious psychedelia on his debut lp. sounds pitch and warp organically, buoyed up by saturated low end and punchy drum machine percussion. there remains a decidedly accomplished precision to the work, though - with the music bearing all the hallmarks of an artist of some considerable experience - testament to the british pro-ducer & label heads 19 years working in the industry. a colourful, exquisitely composed lp that riffs on a timeless production aesthetic with considerable style, echo principle is a fantastic entry into the film records discography.

shadowy multidisciplinary artist & videographer denial.of.service returns to film for an extended ep of wrought iron electronics, channeling the spirit of classic electro, industrial & noise. the artist, active since the 1980’s producing video work for a host of high profile names - including not least david bowie, currently transmits sporadically from an undisclosed location, though contemporary work has appeared on the creators project, as well as making the vimeo staff picks on an almost regular basis. recently, video commissions for minimal wave & jealous god affiliate in aeternam vale have ap-peared online, showcasing the artist’s trademark crushed, hallucinatory visual aesthetic.

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

marvin horsch debuts on berlins film with an ep of exquisitely produced, cinematic electronica. the cologne based producer develops the colourful house found on previous work for the dorfjungs la-bel, with three playful compositions that draw as much on jazz and krautrock as more contemporary strains of alternative electronic music. opener omnisession 1 marries a beautifully shifting organ with live drum work before segueing into the glorious softness of sun after rain, a rich synth solo drenched in tape hiss. closer negobebo 2 wraps up the ep an energetic, looping recording replete with staccato drum-machine strikes and warm, wet verbs carrying a spirited lead across its six minute duration. an honest record, open and expertly executed fukushisha is an admirable addition to the film cata-logue.

following the excellently received dilation lp on film, the duo return to the berlin based imprint for a remix package featuring faltydl, grand optimist, djrum & portable sunsets. erol sarp & lukas vogels ingenious use of the grand piano has won them many plaudits over the years. working solely with the sounds of the grand piano and a set of 20 self-built hammers hitting the piano on different parts - filtered & warped in an extraordinary fashion, the pair craft dense, rousing music - kept fresh & current with nods to idm, ambient & techno. as such, the original recordings are fertile ground for remix opportunities, and the film label call on a whos who of left-field electronica to reimagine the work. nyc native faltydl takes on newtons cradle, flipping the original and turning in a stepping, psychedelic slice of half time proto-footwork while both phillip otterbach, operating under his grand optimist alias, and 2nd drops djrum offer tripping, ambient reinterpretations. 1080p s portable sunsets reimagines key lp cut neon as fuzzy beach house jam, reseting the original & eeking out a wholly different energy with driven drum machine hits & a soothing vox line.

ok, we are quite slow on releasing records, but here is our next release on film. we stumbled upon the artist on a reseach for a music video - in the end we didn t discover a video director, but denial.of.service, an artist in many fields including music, video and performance art. as he ist active since the early eighties, he was involved in numerous projects, doing productions, remixes and videos for and with artists like david bowie, attrition extrawelt and daf. if you take a closer look on his artistic activity since the early 80ies ever then you will quickly realize there is a whole universe to uncover foald from around this artist. our suggestion: start with this fine ep, featuring a hidden secret artwork that unveils in the dark.

erol sarp and lukas vogel are grandbrothers. all their music is composed and recorded on the grand piano. erol plays the keys, while lukas creates the beat by using small self-made and programmed hammers that hit the grand piano. he captures these sounds on the computer, then manipulates and loops them.
