canadian paolo rocco kickstarts the new year with his &#8203,,,judgement ep on hot creations. the first release of 2017 is an international affair, with manchester born trevino and one of the most spoken names of last year, greece native detlef on remix duties. initially making a name for himself through his djing skills back home in montreal, paolo s productions entered the market in 2012 with instant international support. his releases on real tone, one records, saved and others were all met with high acclaims as were the compilations he mixed for defected and get physical. the creation of, ‘judgement’ and ‘that’s it’ prove paolo truly understands what works on the dance floor. 2016 saw detlef reach new heights whilst also debuting on hot creations with his ‘kinky tail’ ep. he returns to the label with a devastating edit of ‘judgement’ and his rolling signature sound. trevino aka marcus intalex &#8203,,,ramps up the ep with his remix, centred around shimmering high hats and a freaky groove. a champion of how a dj can achieve success in two different genres, trevino has released on several of the most praised drum & bass and techno labels for a number of years.

2016 has been a very fruitful year for krill music. the habitat series places focus on shedding light on budding new talents and seasoned veterans alike through solitary tracks. the year kicked off with an ep from those that fall into the latter category - those of whom need little introduction, in stanislav tolkachev, i/y, +platfform and stefan vincent. throughout the course of the year, we then saw the likes of matrixxman, ilario alicante and mental resonance contribute to the now infamous concatenation.

august 2016 saw running back release a first volume of live tracks from redshape, but january 2017 sees the much loved artist return to delsin, his most regard label, for a second offering of the same. this time the ep has one track made in paris, and one in london, and both are filled with the sort of beautifully bleak and lo-fi sounds that have made this man such a standout artist over the years. up first is london, a chugging track that builds in pressurised layers of coarse hi hats, gurgling bass and pinging kick drums. it is a hypnotic groove that teases you as elements drop in and out and hisses of static and broken little guitar riffs add some cheeky funk. on the flip-side, paris is much more playful, with colourful pixelated melodies dancing about the mix, industrial drums working down low and steppy synths fleshing things out. overall it sounds like a future disco for inebriated robots and is one of redshape s more party starting tracks.

it has been a year since we last heard something from him, but in the meanwhile things have been sweltering beneath the surface. last we saw him, he vanished into a sculpture that bended the rules of our three dimensional reality. finally, here we are. being stuck inside a rusty hypercube trying to find your way out, crawling around the different tunnels all leading to new spaces that puzzle the mind. tangible, tactile shapes forming a comprehensive physical world without containing a discernible contour. flat pictures that once inspected transform into multidimensional spaces. the room fades into infinity, and all that’s left is an overdose of sensory stimulation. but dont worry. quince is here to help you find your way out. after an album on delsin, releases on music man, kompakts speicher series and his track europe on our somewhere compilation, quince is back after a short hiatus on something happening somewhere with a four track killer no filler ep that oozes character out of every sweaty pore. making the kind of records you still remember after an intense club night slowly comes to an end, quince presents a diverse pallet of sounds to choose from. rif provides perfect sturdy dance floor material with quince’s compelling groove trusting alongside splintered melodies and detroit influenced synth sounds producing a sense of undeniable optimism. b1s coitus shares a similar punch, combining raspy synth stabs with a detuned bell pad giving the feeling that youre sucked into a wormhole propelling you towards an unknown location.

last year saw casablanca-based cosmo records launch its most ambitious project todate, celebrating five years of cross-cultural collaboration. the three vinyl releasesfeatured producers such as san proper, radiq, pier bucci and dandy jack working with moroccan musicians to create a true fusion between modern electronics and ancient traditions. the purpose of cosmo has always been to find a natural meeting place between thesedistinct musical forms, bringing out the best strengths of each practice through real time spent together in the studio, where each artist can truly understand the other in a shared quest for sonic harmony. as such, this latest release marks a step forward in exploring this idea through a new series entitled cosmo jam. as the title suggests, the focus here is on live improvisation. in late 2014 parisian producers masomenos and vadim svoboda travelled to morocco and set up their equipment at the coda casablanca music center. they were joined by m’hamed el menjra playing bass, abdessamad boussahfa on violin and sanhaji on darbuka, and the ensuing jam sessions between these musicians now make their way on to vinyl. no editing or post-production took place – the music you hear on the record was created entirely in the moment. each track highlights the magic of a different instrument – on “be” menjra’s double bass comes twisting through effects processing and subtle distortion, meeting with a low-slung broken beat groove from the visiting french producers. sanhaji’s thrilling percussive flair on the darbuka flirts perfectly with the crisp programming of drums and bass on the uptempo “kaled” and the more laid-back “petit”. boussahfa’s violin makes for some of the most arresting moments on the release, meeting with intricate minimalist rhythms on “mon” and shining in the heart-rending ambience of “frere”. presented across two 12”s, this collection of six tracks tells a most honest account of how gifted artists from entirely different disciplines can find a common ground and create something truly unique. without any studio trickery to hide behind, this is the concept of cosmo records laid bare, and the results prove it is a concept worth exploring further.

back in the days at the west-saxon highlands there was a missile, which marked the starting point. when credit 00 saw the legendary rocket rise on tetris’ final screen, it was the first time he became aware of electronic music at all. since then it actually hasn’t changed that much. he keeps pushing that buttons that belong to the impressive pool of music machines towered up next to his bed. after moving to dresden in 2000 to study fine arts, his passion for synthesizers and drum machines got nurtured through visits of dresden’s club-canalisation. he quickly made himself a name as a dj, who is just doing his own thing and got popular for that reason. as a part of the idealfun-crew he started hosting parties always in the twilight zone between legal and illegal. this led to “robo dance”, dresden’s only and (also for some other reasons) best electro club night featuring guests like dmx krew, luke eargoogle or imatran voima. the track credit made with randy barracuda of imatran voima has probably been created some time after the show. apparently, randy was not in good shape anymore and so “lebensraum” unmistakably bears credit’s hallmarks. for his own music he’s inspired by cannibal movies, number theory and birds. still, his music is not easy to pigeonhole. after all, he loves synth wave, electro, afro, kraut, kosmische, disco, italo, miami bass and other proto stuff – a lot of machine music.

jamie roberts is no stranger to the more experimental tenets of the techno genre, and much of the british artist’s output of late has hinted at more leftfield leanings. a recent return to will bankhead’s trilogy tapes imprint saw a brace of meditative, post-detroit workouts - employing the same heady, hardware aesthetic as much of his work on ternesc - though at a drastically reduced tempo. it’s this same willingness to break down perceptions regarding his own music that marks walk type – roberts’ debut on the avian label, as a notable chapter in the artist’s discography.

u is a producer and dj currently living in london. previous records for man make music have proven suitable for the club as well as home listening, while a collaboration with babe, terror as btu for erol alkan’s phantasy label was varyingly described as “pleasure with a sense of dread” (the line of best fit) and “akin to having five songs playing simultaneously on your computer” (the guardian). 2014 saw u’s debut ‘haven in a heartfelt world’ ep described as -giddy electronic fuzz that packs the subtlest of punches descends into dense glitch noise then returns triumphant gritty and melodic” (crack magazine) and “distorted dreamstates” (ransom note). after the deranged chamber­edits of vienna for where to now?, u returns to the well­trodden path between flattery and irreverence in dance music with a special edition 2-­track 12- for phantasy sound. friendly ghost enters with a splay of combat­bongos, a thin synthetic aura draws over the fluctuating rhythms before a strangely negative bassline sets the pace in nu­wave perpetual motion, inevitably spiraling back on itself into a clattering reversal. on the flip ascension hymn rushes headlong into a mechanical shunter, abruptly dragged back by a frail and singular voice reciting an uncertain mantra of self­fulfilment over this blunted hardcore epic spanning 13 minutes. pressed to heavyweight vinyl, designed and printed by the artist in an edition of 300ish.

the grooves of thomas white and pete williams aka natural rhythm, have been a mainstay in the sets of robsoul boss phil weeks for more than a decade. today he pays ‘tribute’ with a special re-release of some of his favourites. born in a garage in the late 90’s, natural rhythm was a meeting of passionate musical minds. working together the pair sought to create their own style and sound, influenced by the tracks they were regularly spinning in their own dj sets across the country. creative sampling and their own raw beats, together with live instrumentation and regular guest vocalists, saw natural rhythm create a strong catalogue that, as we know, are still getting played today. with three albums and over 35 ep/single releases to their name, there more than enough music for label boss weeks to select from for the tribute ep. a tough job? of course. however, phil went straight for the four that never leave his box. leading the ep are the sun-drenched vocal vibes of ‘something big’, the title track of natural rhythm’s 1999 release on under the counter. our a2 is the lead track from 2001’s last call at the martini ranch ep, ‘chicago nights’, with its quaking bassline and disco dalliance. on the flip we’re treated to a choice selection from natural rhythm’s 1999 double album contrast in nature. first up with its celestial chimes and thumping kick is ‘smoldering island’, taken from the original part 1. closing the tribute release and taken from part 2 is the devilishly funky and suitably titled feelgood jam ‘energized’. we definitely are!

long-time london based friends and regular collaborators ethyl & flori have been foraying between the blurred lines of house and techno with releases on labels like secretsundaze, aim and fear of flying for the last 6 years - and with a glowing reputation under their belt, 2015 saw the duo launch their own imprint e&f records. this time however, their most recent venture is a release with london label mutual friend recordings and combines the duos talent with enigmatic label owners and friends of ours london party curators our mutual friend, their solo ep on brooklyns voodoo down records earlier this year was tipped by such luminaries as levon vincent and dj october.

after completing his debut 12- for 100% silk (which saw a release in feb 2016) hubert clarke jr spent most of 2015 focused on pushing the music of others, through sydney s newest record store, outer time inner space. owning and being surrounded by a literal shop full of records provided motivation and inspiration but left little time for writing.

fuckthegovernment.ltd, a.k.a. f.t.g (alfredo trastulli) and music box head honcho, marco riff, return to the skylax fold in 2016 with a cache of house nuggets for our listening pleasure. their last venture on skylax saw f.t.g collaborate with a bunch of his friends, resulting in some of the best tracks we’d heard all year, including the unforgettable fuckthegovernment theme. their tracks have been celebrated and hailed by some of the best djs in the game, names such as derrick may, ricardo villalobos, raresh, and dj harvey. the bar set by the first record remains sky high, and somehow, these two manage to raise the bar even higher. it may be the biggest cliche going when talking about an album, but the duo certainly do take us on a journey, through the past and present of house music. it’s a record not too dissimilar in tone to paranoid london’s from a few years back, but f.t.g and marco strip things back even further than those guys did, in our opinion, the sound is more raw with less frills, and no track names to predispose feelings in the listener either. this eight track project is cohesive and elaborate, with movements through sounds both acid and jazzy, minimal and maximal. it explores sounds that came to prominence in famous house locales such as detroit and chicago over in the u.s., but the underground european influence is definitely present, from paris to berlin, and of course f.t.g and marco’s home of italy. with this album, these guys add to the underground sound that has cultivated in the city of perugia for years now, a place that has seen the likes of simoncino and nicholas hone their craft.don’t miss out on a piece of skylax history

rome native marco piovesan is a dj’s producer. his driving style, pristine sound quality and nuanced tones makes his techno of the variety that draws bodies to the dance floor, and keeps them there. 2013 was his breakout year which saw releases land on gynoid audio, m_rec ltd.. that same year piovesan launched his own enterprise, h.omevvork recordings, as a haven for richly emotive techno music imbued in ‘90s spirit. to date it’s three ep’s have been remixed by luminaries such as giorgio gigli, daub and m_rec ltd’s sadly departed chief max_m. piovesan joined the key roster soon after as part of a split ep with another (then) up-and-comer, hector oaks. his two works, “black paranoid 7” and “black paranoid 10”, were clean, steely dj fodder underscored with a dark energy that made both of them potent club weapons. now piovesan returns with four cuts of surging, remorseless marching material design to tear up strobe-lit basements and big room halls alike. for djs who take no prisoners, who enjoy calling on the old techno ghosts too.

a few years ago i saw a documentary about the audio trickery employed in ww2. i was totally flabbergasted and soon absorbed anything i could find on the subject. artists and scientists alike cooked up incredible situations to fool the german army. inflatable tanks and trucks stacked with speakers projecting recordings of an imaginary reality were used to deceive and deviate the opponent. this odd scenario influenced me profoundly and drove me towards composing music that related these feelings. the project only collected dust inside my head until radio bongo heard of it and encouraged me to finish. sveinbjörn bjarki jónsson aka sonic deception

the main ingredient is the second album by pete rock & cl smooth, originally released in 1994. characterized by sultry soul and jazz samples, the album saw a more polished sound than the duo’s debut “mecca & the soul brother” movlp1633, building on the praise that they had already garnered. the main ingredient is notable for its snappy, crispy drums and extensive use of vocal scratches. it contains some of the duo’s best known work, in the form of tracks such as the upbeat “in the house”, and the catchy “sun won’t come out”, which features a lush vocal sample from the song of the same name by harvey scales.

the third release from new imprint dama dama, is another offering from label co-founder pedestrian, following the label’s well-received debut ep - ‘circadian rhythms’ . ‘pick your shots clean’ is a track inspired by this spring’s european dama dama label launch tour, which saw founding members pedestrian & maribou state take to the road, curating bespoke parties with back to back all night dj sets. as ever, the music itself is hard to categorise, but we would say that it sits somewhere between a rugged 90’s chemical brothers track and a 70’s arabian psych-rock record. the flipside - ‘airs & graces’ - serves as a counter-balance (a kind of yang to the ying of the a-side), that picks up where circadian rhythms left off, taking the listener off on a melodic 5-minute trip. currently gearing up to release a new signing in the dama dama camp, the team also have their sights set on the curation of festival stages, more intriguing night endeavors and a new mixtape series, all set for delivery over the coming months. pedestrian now with his sights firmly set on writing his debut lp, will be found at a number of festivals over the summer.

the second of this year’s smd singles on their own delicacies label is features another two original tracks, leading with the hypnotic, late night techno loping of “remember in reverse”, drenched in glistening synths. the second track, “soft attack” takes a much more direct approach, with a brash battering of crash cymbals on every 4th bar marking time as a sinuous synth melody curls around the rhythmatic trunk. “soft attack (drum version)” pares it down even further, excising the melody for a minimal dj tool. also included here is a remix of ‘remember in reverse” from 90s mid west techno legend, dj hyperactive, who we’re super excited to have on this release. he extensive 11 minute rework transforms the track, sprinkling it with subtle doses of acid. after a short hiatus following their modular-only, desert recorded last album “whorl”, during which smd s james ford found himself on production duties for everyone and their dog, smd are back with bunch of techno cuts on their own delicacies label. over a couple of months in jas shaw s newly re-located synth-dense studio in leafy kent, which saw smd once again experiment with live jams as the basis for their production, they’ve pulled together a selection of eight tracks for release as a series of four singles over the coming months. smd fans will note that the earlier naming convention of delicacies has fallen by the wayside – for the simple reason that we’ve pretty much run out of weird and wonderful food stuffs to steal names from. instead, a semi-random automated process has been used to create the track names.

um:bros project is back from 1984, they played mainly live during mid-eighties in one of the first italian electronic club called suburbia (perugia). they signed for the legendary house of music italian label but this album never saw the light (due also for the short life of the label). um:bros put togheter elecronic, new wave and italo-disco in a modern and updated style!
