some johannes’ words about his work for artcub records: “the title track “sawtooth novel” is my little hommage to the old sägezahn sound. there was a sägezahn renaissance in the rhein main area end of the 90’s, which was a huge influence for me when i went to clubs during this time. “counterbalance” has a rather subtle approach, the track lives from its effects and filtering. for the others tracks i want to express the more darker and dramatic side of techno, which is also well-equipped for the more excessive dancefloor hours.”

dieter meier, heir turned conceptual artist, joined boris blank to form the electronic synth group yello in the late 70s, but it wasnt until the late 80s that they had their biggest success with the international hit the race, which was used in advertisements and (sports) programs all over the world.
combining samples and beats with meiers deep and distinctive voice, yello became experts in combining the suave with the eclectic. 1998s flag contains the hit the race next to a number of experiments on afro-cuban rhythms, such as on tied up. this first vinyl re-release since 1989 comes on 180 grams audiophile vinyl with an insert.

dalmata daniel s next up is a collaboration with the bristol-born „weirdo disco guy- antoni maiovvi and also a contribution of heinrich dressel who is an unavoidable column of rome s electronic music scene. maiovvi s pleasure model project is all about youth – replaced by blade runner-esque replicas. his first release under this moniker was „kendo dynamics- on 100% silk in 2016. it aimed for presenting a persuasive world of fiber optic paranoia and technoid effacement. dd006 is the next level of the concept and the first time on vinyl. the tracks are driven by the characteristic haggard drum machine s sound on side a with a melancholic or dark synth themes what becomes a dreamy melody in the „prism riot- on side b. the remix by heinrich dressel is a turn back directly into the darkness, but it is faster and more like a film soundtrack with his own characteristics, of course. the whole ep has a strong vintage mood and sound. it can be said that update 1.1 is definitely dystopian, coming from the future of our past.

they expect me to write something informative about the tracks on this ep here but i find it really difficult to express music in words. on top of it i went out last night, to club der visionõre, and i feel hungover and empty inside my head. so now im sitting here and all i can think of is, cant you just take a listen to the music?! the ep contains 5 tracks all made in the last couple of lousy summer months here in berlin in nostalgia for the better days. itÆs about house and a bit of electro, no gimmicks.

combining forces, audiofly and patrice bäumel draw on unique inspirations from the desert to deliver the monumental atacama on crosstown rebels. having focused solely on his own productions in the past, label boss damian lazarus steps away for the first time to complete this exceptional release with a profound re-shape. the hypnotic atacama intricately builds with a certain intensity that never drops, stimulating the senses and transporting the mind as deep, grumbling pads drift in and out of play. damian lazarus remembers the first moment i heard this track i knew there was something very special about it, not only did it strike me as a killer club record but i also felt the textures completely appropriate to my own experiences in the atacama desert. on the flip, damian changes gear as a deep, chugging beat leads the way through an impressive re-shape of the original. anthony middleton and luca saporito aka audiofly have established a creative empire, which includes two record labels and their flying circus global party brand. they met patrice during a us tour and immediately hit it off. it wasn t long after that we decided to invite him to barcelona for a session that proved to be nothing short of inspirational. internationally renowned dj and producer patrice bäumel has had a busy start to 2017 with a release on tale of us’ afterlife imprint, plus remixes for sasha & policia and depeche mode amongst others. he truthfully said of the this release, it s a labour of love that came together within a few hours of jamming in the studio, unlike many collabs this one really felt like we all equally contributed to the end result.

...and in the end, not a great deal is known about the spanish duo futuro. the saga begins with the discovery of a cache of test pressings deep within the shelves of a very dusty record shop near the plaza del toros de valencia. as is the case with these things there was no promo sheet or any other information outside of three clues etched into the run-out groove: futuro, jollyman, mcmlxxxvii. through deduction and reasoning it was soon realised that jollyman was a short lived italian record label that closed it s doors in 1987. there were rumours for a while that jollyman was a mafia wedding gift to a music enthused female family member, but as the journey continued it became slightly more likely that this was a tax write-off for it s owners, as the label itself was never very successful, and was more likely an afterthought rather than a full on passion project. that is not to say that there were not gems hidden within it s small catalogue, most notably from noted library musician, composer and arranger alessandro signoretti, without whose help this release would not be presently in front of you. alessandro s assistance led us to the infamous hafenklang studio in hamburg, germany. the very same studio used by boytronic to record their classic lp the continental (some of the same dx presets can easily be heard on both albums) and despite the insane amounts of musicians that have passed through those doors the owner clearly remembered the duo and finally the mysterious futuro had names: javier c rayón and raúl láynez.

too late for the italo boom, and too early for the sonido de valencia craze, the recordings of futuro have sat on master tapes since 1987 finally awaiting their much deserved audience. bordello a parigi are more than proud to present this lost late slow-mo synthesizer italo masterpiece onto the world.

here at quantize we simply love confounding expectations cos, guess what? we love all kinds of music and don t like to be stereotyped. but this one even surprised the hell out of us so much so that we figured it deserved a 7inch vinyl release in tribute to the original format. think (about it) was originally recorded 45 years ago in the summer of 1972 by the fiery lyn collins. produced by the godfather of soul, james brown, it barely scraped into the rnb top 10 at the time and normally would have faded into time as just another great james brown produced record but in 1987, it started to get sampled by a new generation of hip-hop artists like roxanne shante and robe base and dj e-z rock. suddenly the world woke up to the possibilities of sampling and since that point, think (about it) has been sampled 1908 times and is the no.3 most-sampled record of all time. so we decided to cut a new version of it with real musicians and one of the few vocalists that would be capable of matching lyn collins firepower - dance music s diva supreme, the incredible barbara tucker. we wanted barbara to really cut loose on this and she didn t disappoint. and yes, those are real keyboards, real guitar and real horns. believe us, this session was off the scale! so when we finally got our breath back we decided we had to get this out on a 45 on its 45th anniversary! it seemed the most appropriate way to do justice to a record that simply jumps outta the grooves. we believe think (about it) will have universal appeal pretty much everywhere since the song is now implanted within the dna of dance music across the world.

total science are back to grace their own imprint cia records, and this time they enlist the musical and technical prowess of fellow bristol associates hydro and war alongside themselves on the reign ep. made up of four killer slabs of fast paced, moving and deep drum & bass, the influence of each party is immediately obvious in each track. total science are infamous for their breaks and rave influences that have often been present in their music since they first started releasing in the early 1990’s. hydro has been releasing music since 2007, working with a slew of respected producers such as break, dlr, fd and halogenix amongst many others. he is infamous for his epic sample collection and the deep and deadly vibe that he brings to tracks. and the young french extraordinaire war has already shown he is a force to be reckoned with, consistently releasing music with a sublime depth and musicality that belies his age – and also a power and punch that consistently rips clubs to shreds. the reign ep brings the finest attributes of each of the parties to the table, and results in a well-rounded collection of music that offers something to a wide range of listeners. whether you want to lock them into a groove, tear the roof off the club, or get them thinking about what will come next in this world, the reign ep has it in spades.

a year after danger, their debut ep on blank mind, durban-based crew audioboyz join forces with hypermedium to deliver another instalment in the growing chronicles of gqom, the darker deviant that grew out of south-african house and whose shockwave is still resonating across western dance floors.

cult duo rework are next up on my favorite robot with a five track ep that shows off their brilliantly inventive house and tech style. the production outfit of daniel varga, michael kuebler deal in left of centre and freaky house with a mischievous afterparty slant. they have been active for more than a decade now and have credits on great labels like visionquest, items & things, meant and the institution that is playhouse. the brilliantly sleazy “talk it off” opens things up with popping drums, playful lyrics and a steely sound that is designed for wonky basement parties. “valencia” goes deeper with warm drums and synths surging along next to an elastic groove that is propped up by energetic and incendiary chord stabs. it’s a subtle but high impact track that will raise the energy levels on any floor. “think about you” has vocals coated in echo and delay and trippy synths that are lively and off kilter. it makes for a track that is brilliantly loose and undulating and cannot fail to get under your skin. final track “attractive” heads in a much more techno direction with surging drums and hypnotic slithering synths that burrow deep into your brain and seep into the night. it is trance inducing for sure, and shows another side to this accomplished outfit. this is a versatile ep stuffed with killer cuts for many different moments in the night, and each is as standout as the next.

running a label with the ambition to push new and unique voices isn t always an easy task. while finding new artists is about as hard as finding a black t-shirt in berlin, most budding artists seem pressured to conform or mimic the already established, only to be heard. performing under the artist name bleie, oakland resident sarah bly is not one of them. originally hailing from seattle, she indeed works with the mortar of techno form, but uses different bricks altogether. it s a hard sound to articulate, at first, it s almost alienating to ears worn by years in dark clubs. its mercurial, yet still surprisingly club compatible nature makes it an aural tiger balm – it burns and soothes at once. this compositional depth is perhaps a result of bleie s background as a trained pianist and violinist, by which she transmutes the commonly associated tropes of the genre. bleie lets the elements rule over the form, giving the tracks a morphing and unpredictable feel. obviously we were instantly intrigued when stumbling across her music, and now extremely proud to present her vinyl debut certainty is only a feeling . four tracks of unique techno so brimfully suggestive that it s nearly peerless. we can t imagine this leaving anyone unaffected.

since his last appearance on hemlock (2015 s double ep hek025) hodge has produced a seemingly effortless sequence of celebrated eps and collaborations for livity sound, berceuse heroique and no corner. equally comfortable squaring up with heavyweights such as randomer and peder mannerfelt as he is maintaining a prolific solo production output, hodge has cemented himself as a leading voice in uk dance music and a champion of the elusive sweet spot where functional techno resonates with soundsystem culture. a quick listen through his recent ra mix is a great way to keep up to speed with his recent output. one for the hemlock fans who have been patiently tolerating this year s more experimental cuts. swing for the fences is straight down to business getting the kicks in below one of those ear-wormer percussive atonal toplines hodge does so well… the drop is one of the heaviest we ve heard this year and tipped to raise some fingers, open mouths and spill drinks across dancefloors and tv studios worldwide. less pool cue more pool party aomame is a breezy melodic (patio) heater powered by tough drums and intricate percussive work. arranged for both the dancers and the heads it freely refreshes and translates the main theme with a precision and playfulness that few producers can match. medway will warm up or cool out the dance with big room sirens and some rude detuned drum work. still no messing about on the b2: it s a hodge thing all the way.

didier allyne embodies a certain kind of underground already in the mid 90 s : a record store clerk, distributor, artist and dj, he cross-cuttingly approched the scene even back then, when -french touch- was massive. embracing the new trends from a sideways perspective, he emerged with his own blend of broken beat, soul jazz and warp style electro, always keeping the groove in sight, basicaly what techno is all about, as deep and singular as it gets he began the parisian shop traffic records in 1998. this compilation will be in several volumes that have been flagship pieces of this shop influenced by fat cat records, wally s groove world in others ...this first techno volume highlights the influence that didier received at fat cat by the introspective piece stasis -so-lar- on time in right in 1993 & ritchie inkle, one of the designers of nu loop & whose piece - happy face -represents the techno sound represented by traffic records

the exaltics are back with new transmissions from their universe in form of the second part of -das heise experiment-. the first part from 2013 on abstract acid will see his follow up end of 2017 on 2xlp inclusive a comic book about the story of the heise experiment. this amazing looking shape picture disc, developed with the dutch artist godspill aka mehdi rouchiche, is -the prequel- release and sees the exaltics in assault mode. side a brings a stomper in typical exaltics style with deep strings and a pumping bassline like an alien invasion which is on course to earth. side b begins with a cryptic alien speech signal transmitted direct from the universe whilst the second track is a collaboration track with non other than dopplereffekt s rudolf klorzeiger. both artists together create a timeless electro voyage with sharp snares and fast running basslines and combine their both styles perfectly together. every record comes with a download code for the release itself and 3 exclusive bonus tracks. this release is strictly limited to 500 copies. the outer contour of the picture is also the contour of the record and makes this release to something really special and to a high collectable item.

it had been four years since juxtaposition, radians last record. chimeric is not a polished album. within the context it is raw, broken, even dark sometimes. steady, multiple rhythms, layered on top of each other disappear into chaos and turn back into discreet structures in the next moment. references of rock music, executed with the precision of a sequencer, mutated, restructured. a lot on this album is about control and the loss of control. the risk of failure. but chimeric is much more free. some of the longer pieces are composed of very different parts and different colours along a continuous timeline. they tend to evolve in a narrative form and are moving through various scenes and surroundings, which is also present in the spacial relationship between the instruments.

home is procol harum’s fourth album, released in 1970. with the departure of organist matthew fisher and bassist david knights and the addition of the remaining musicians (gary brooker, b.j. wilson and robin trower) former bandmate bassist/organist chris copping from the paramounts, procol harum was, for all intents and purposes, the paramounts again in all but name.

copenhagens music for dreams comes with yet another strong release - a double album of personal favourites compiled by jan schulte. according to all maps and witness accounts, germany does not officially have any tropical forests. this is of no concern to schulte however, who has unearthed many stunning examples of tropical drum music recorded there. perhaps the number of botanical gardens and palm houses in germany confused musicians into mistaking the climate, or maybe it was just a happy blend of escapism and multi-cultural integration within musical scenes that spawned such a curious output of undefinable tribal folk jazz. most of the tracks picked by schulte were released on small labels in the late 80 s. the musicians involved were mainly traditionally schooled, born and raised in germany. at that time to be interested in foreign folk music might have seemed a gimmick to some, what with the emerging -world music boom- already snowballing into the mainstream. but these songs, while they may be based on musical traditions from foreign lands, deal much more with introspection than exploitation. schulte himself points to his -general fascination for music that describes places where the artists have never been. songs about the jungle or the rainforest made by people that know the rainforest only from television and books. somehow i think you can hear their mythical imagination and fantasy in those tracks,- he explains....
