album of the week (mixmag), album of the week (the independent), the drive soundtrack with a rocket up its arse. (dj mag) - just three of the reactions to john bs latest >light speed< album from earlier in the year, a neon-soaked journey into one of the most epic drum & bass lps of recent times.
now the title track is about to be unleashed with a package of remixes that go beyond the norm, ready to hit all corners very hard indeed. for johns most ambitious single release yet, some of the most exciting young producers from around the world have been drawn in to offer their take on the uplifting stadium anthem >light speed< featuring the vocal talents of nsg.
from the totally re-worked club house mix through to hyper-boiled drum & bass smashers and electroid dubstep, no holds have been barred and if hi-rolling drumstep is what you are after, johns even got that too. a massive dynamite release from one of electronic musics most flamboyant figureheads.
over the course of the past 15 years john b has become one of the most eclectic, unique and respected artists in electronic music. his ability to stretch the elastic of drum & bass over the past decade has brought him together with an array of figureheads from all corners of the scene from metalheadz boss goldie, to legendary global dj paul oakenfold. defying categorisation, johns catalogue straddles electro, punk rock, trance, latin, techno and drum & bass. now as we enter 2012 he is ready to drop his brand new album >light speed<, a full-force electro/trance d&b hybrid of truly epic proportions.
some seriously heavy drumstep monsters here from daniil kormshchikov aka hectix, a talented young producer from nizhny novgorod, in russia – picked up by john b when he was on tour out there earlier this year. he’s already had releases out on labels such as ammunition, artist recordings, talkin beatz & drum orange. overnight starts with an epic trance build up then hits you hard with absolute killer bass and drums and a phat mixdown. love rader has more screechy synths, and even moar heavy drumstep bizniz, both instant rewinds…
hectix is also working on a remix of >light speed< the title track from john bs new album out in 2012.
a pair of huge, juicy, ripe bassy beasts here. the original mixes are still doing damage on international dancefloors and now its the time for the remixes. bare smashes >lockdown< with another drumstep megabass monster, and j.rabbit comes with a full-on dubstep remix of the mighty >up in the club
john bs beta recordings label follows up its recent return with a new single from high rankin.
high rankins music is a celebration of eccentricity. brimming with character and personality, rankins tunes never fail to raise the bar musically and always cause an inevitable dance floor riot.
john bs first single in over a year, the last one – >red sky< got sampled by us rap giant nicki minaj and was on her 2million selling album >pink friday<. wahayy. this is the sampler to john bs eagerly anticipated new album >light speed<, out a week after this single. picking up on his now-trademark 80s/electro flex this is, as the title suggests future retro electro d&b at its finest. john bs robo voice on the vocoder je suis un robot lover, i dance like a machine, erotic, robotic. there has also been interest from the trance scene – dj mag top 100 #13 dj, gareth emery has played it on his hugely popular podcast.
this young new trio from tallinn, estonia, consisting of andrus, markus, kaarel, is putting their stamp on drum & bass. picked up this year by beta, toolroom & have-a-break recordings, they have managed to get play support from scenes biggest djs such as netsky, lynx, london electricity, crissy criss, b-complex, dj ss, kg & john b.
their sound is characterized by illustrious ambient chords mixed with polished fresh drum sounds with a strong deep foundation of warm bass. from dancefloors to chill out nights at home, indivision brings it all. big things to be expected from this talented trio in not too distant future.
gmorozov debuts this monster electro dnb ep on beta recordings after his successful initial foray on john bs nu electro label earlier in the year with his >internet=hate< ep. again opting for a minimal electro & acid influenced style of dnb here with tracks >acid #2< and >generation=0< gmorozov manages to forge forward with a new, distinctly russian, aggressively synthetic sound, a little reminiscent of camo & krookeds mighty remix of john bs >numbers<.
some facts about gmorozov: he lives in kazan, 800km away from moscow he played violin for 10 years. when he is not busy working on new music he is a phd student of the physical chemistry department of ksu his favorite composers are alfred schnitke, f.i. chaikovsky, bernard herrmann, danny elfman.
two absolute beasts here on this exciting double a side - both leaning towards a more ‘trance & bass’ sound, but with a deep, refined edge, and uncompromising dancefloor power. without you is a beautiful, refreshing, trancey dnb roller. deadmau5 vibes and an almost 4/4 break keep things pushing on with a progressive synth chord pattern and subtle, building pads. perfect transition track, great in the mix - but with a breakdown that really makes the crowd take notice & progressively builds them up again to a mighty crescendo.
terravita are back with a huge follow up to their last smash on john bs beta recordings label >up in the club<. the last release dominated dubstep & dnb charts alike with its prototype drumstep sound, and now they return and take things up a notch...
at the forefront of the genre one again, terravita nail it with the awesome >nail in the coffin<. everything is leads up to the monumental bass drop, distinctive vocals from matt of terravita, and rising synths draw you in, and then the whole world collapses as the monster bass shakes the walls down. truly a drumstep classic in the making.
nice price deal !!! originally from poland, young drum & bass producer xilent now resides in edinburgh, scotland. after first breaking onto the scene in 2007 he has steadily risen through the ranks with his intense, muscular yet funky and uplifting style.
receptor is no stranger to an array of styles, this eclectic talent has been helping him make his mark since 1997. hailing from the east the russian producer certainly brings with him an electric twist.
on >princess< - dont let the title fool you - this track is no fairy tale. the beat kicks in like no other with a raw undertone that will have the crowd bouncing along. its sure to be the one tune everyone is talking about after the weekend.
john bs beta recordings label makes a welcome return with a new single from terravita. made up of chris barlow, matt simmers and jon spero, they are putting their electro powerhouse alterego hot pink delorean to the side for just a second for their debut release on beta, >lockdown< and >up in the club<.
the single is best described as drumstep, a sub genre the boston boys have been a part of from day one. pioneers in the field, drumstep is proving to be one of the most popular rising genres to date.
hot on the heels of camo & krookeds >edge of mind< ep comes a debut single from polands xilent, another bright new talent unearthed by mr. john b.
>killing spree< opens with swirling atmospherics that conjure the mood whilst a snarly melodic bassline whirrs into action, underpinned by charging percussion and some extremely slick edits.
>dislocation< takes a more straight forward approach with an arpeggiated synth hook reeling us into a drop of epic proportions before xilent unleashes even more edit abuse, twisting and contorting his sublime soundscape into a new beast for the second drop.
