only one month after the release of their first ep on mt on may 2018, vactrol park continue surprising, this time with a full lp in the shape of “music from the luminous void”.the album sees vp delve much deeper into more atmospheric realms. using modular synths and unexpected drum machine sequencing they leave the 4x4 beats behind in favor of off-world rhythms and ever growing bass. &#8232,,,,, starting with drops’s high frequency tension, laying on top of those heavy kick drums it keeps on growing and growing. from there it moves to the “end of the party” groove that is novikov’s notation, and its trippy monotonic rhythm. the a-side ends with the heavy sampled ambient track macbeth, bringing forward that mesmerizing flute solo by italian artist luca spagnoletti yet succeeding in avoiding the kitsch, and with a touch of class. &#8232,,,,,&#8232,,,,,the b-side delves even deeper into ambience and atmospheric muzak. starting with bells, that features again spagnoletti on flute. then we get into the real gems of the album - anstruther and glove. the first is a pure trip into modular psychedelia and repetitive jazzy-like drum rhythms, creating tension right from the start and plays with it throughout the track before decaying slowly into glove, which is in sense both the catharsis and the decompression session of the album. like a 2018 version of vangelis, this track’s soundscape will keep you dreaming with your eyes closed long after the album ends. &#8232,,,,,

salvador breed and stijn van beek met while studying sound design and music technology in 2006. ever since then the pair have been beavering away behind an arsenal of blinking banks in amsterdam. the musical fruit of their friendship is breek, a partnership that smears the boundaries of styles and sounds with festive flare and a rainbow steaked uniqueness. for their vinyl debut yokai, a candy coloured cornucopia of elements are swirled and whirled. braindance, electronica and neo-classical are festooned with dubby tones and underground grit in a unique sound of diverse textures and deep tones. faster works, like the swooping joy of yokai, are countered by more contemplative ama. hang is a whimsical dreamscape of squirming acid lines, crisp drums and angular notes that combine to produce a brilliantly bright piece. mu-onna and oiwa are more abstract works that melt vocals with sweet strings before the final piano swells and ambient rains of burabura. a daring and dynamic vinyl debut from this eccentric duo with stunning artwork from warren du preez and nick thornton jones.

sami baha is a turkish producer based in south east london. his music was introduced to the world via his 2016 ep “mavericks” (planet mu), recorded while he was moving from istanbul to london where he’s now been living the last 3 years. sami got into producing through being a rapper himself, working with local rappers in turkey and producing beats for them, before setting his sights outside the country.
while his first record was focused around a more familiar trap based hiphop sound, “free for all” expands its range into more unfamiliar territory and also brings his production into focus by featuring a number of mcs from all corners of the globe: uk drill squad 67’s dimzy, stockholm’s yung lean and chicago rapper and singer dj nate (aka flexxbabii) who’s previously recorded on planet mu as a footwork producer. the record also features the rowdy sing-song of egyptian mcs dawsha and abanob from cairo whom sami met while on tour in egypt.

with his solo project jesus is my son, gregory duby, a guitarist from the belgian black country, explores since 2005 another side of his expanded tastes in music. after years in noise-rock bands (the invisible frog, k-branding) both bands being under influence of metal and industrial music, jesus is my son is  clearly on the classical guitar side of things. except you can never forget and always feel the intensity of duby s heavier practice in the soft and peaceful innocence , sometimes in its almost threatening tension, sometimes in its profoundly melancholic relief. on the b-side, insouciance has an oriental feel to it, a lighter face: recklessness after a crash or smiling distraction before a tempest.

bugs is aus label owner will sauls first solo ep in over 4 years and follows his inaugural release on new aus compilation series, inside out. heres will on the a side. bugs is inspired as much by dancing at plastic people/co-op to the bugz in the attic as is it is by carl craigs innerzone orchestra track bugs in the bass bin. hopefully i bring my own twist to these key influences. the map room tumbles with big, swinging drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout before matt karmill takes bugs off on a linear dubbed out excursion to complete the package.

hmot aka stas sharifullin is siberian-born, moscow-based musician, curator, educator and multi-disciplinary artist from siberia. using modular synthesizer, field recordings and visual programming languages, hmot collects sounds and organizes them into structures, pushing traditional electronic music genres beyond their comfort zones. “permanent imbalance” is his ep debut on the berlin imprint oqko following a single contribution to the label’s “form_1” compilation. structurally, “permanent imbalance” is disorderly and elusive, it’s a techno record which has undergone a gregor samsaesque metamorphosis. embedded with dizzying polyrhythmics, the discontinuity at the heart of the record might also be its central directive – interrupting the ecstatic clubbing experience in favor of a contradictory reality which is impossible to describe with regular rhythms. boldly submitted to the niche of dance music deviations, “permanent imbalance” also reveals techniques directly derived from early institutional electronics and musique concrete. but where others would pile on the layers, sharifullin keeps it trim. these are just some finishing touches enhancing his rickety and multifaceted soundscapes. subject to constant deviations of its own temporality, this music proves to mirror the crisis in which modernity resides – a state of life out of balance which now appears to be permanent as never before.

thoma bulwer returns with jandaze , his latest ep via parasol culture featuring long-time partner in crime anna wall. it follows parasol 001 their first joint vinyl release, that sold out on the shelves gaining support from the likes of mood ii swing and cab drivers plus on the airwaves via nts. their jandaze ep has already been doing the rounds on the dj circuit in hackney wick and beyond. ‘patience’ was the result of a late night jam session with sync boxes, groove benders and the classic tr-909. after much fine-tuning, it’s been tried and tested by cinthie on her recent australia tour and is set to be a staple club cut for this summer. although ‘insouciant’ means a casual lack of concert, a lot of work went into making this one. it’s the most laid-back of the bunch, with smallville-esque juno 106 melodies perfect for the afterparty or warm up session. this goes out to the post-nyd loft party crew in the wick where it was played for the first time. try pronouncing this one at 7am in the morning… ‘fridge speed’ is a minimal house cut influenced by thoma’s garage roots. think rudely placed analogue synth stab melodies, ‘tuff’ skippy drums and big subs ideal for early hours and “it’s a london thing” house sets. ‘egress’ was made with long jam takes from thoma’s modular system. deep, dubby beats, evolving synths and textures make up this track thats been road-tested on the world famous fabric room 1 sound system by voigtmann in his extended set before ricardo villalobos. current support comes from maya jane coles, archie hamilton franck, roger, cinthie, voigtmann, john dimas.

after putting out kito jempere s well received sea monsters album last year, hell yeah now serve up another selection of remixes of it. accomplished musician jimi tenor, plus miskotom and max essa all contribute before a 7inch, also taken from the album, lands later in summer. first up is jimi tenor, the legndary finnish musician who has released on warp, collaborated with tony allen and has his own band as well as occasionally playing sax with kito jempere band at live gigs. he flips puzzled into five minutes of stripped back and moody electronics with plenty of his own flute playing in the track. busted drum sounds, spooky sci-fi synths and scattered hits make it woozy and late night and utterly absorbing. miskotom—a newly emerging pair made up of mik and his wife andra, both based in vilnius, lithuania with credits on pleasure unit and balearic —then reimagine ampa as a beatdown but of deep house with trudging drums staying low and shimmering synths drift out in all directions. crunchy hits bring a subtle sense of funk and reverb drenched vocals bring a heavenly feel to the soul drenched grooves and summery keys. then comes max essa, the japan based brit who is a regular on this label as well as the likes of is it balearic?. his first remix is a huge one that is sure to soundtrack many a boat party this summer. it s a gorgeous rework of ampa that puts achingly blissful vocals front and centre as low slung bass and slowly turning drums sink you into a pan-pipe laced reverie. secondly, essa offers a dub reprise that removes the vocals and places all the focus on his churning drums and new age grooves. this is another perfect package of masterfully electronic horizontal sounds.

for phonicas landmark 20th release on the main label we go back to a classic from the same year the shop opened stereofuses casino ep, originally released on berlin label salo in 2003. the casino ep marked the first collaboration between martin wörner & thorsten diegel as stereofuse. they followed it up with a string of other 12inches for other labels but its this initial 12inch that has been fetching high prices second-hand as one of the most sought after releases on salo and for very good reason. a timeless ep sitting somewhere between house and techno (before tech-house became a disputed tag-line!) with the likes of ricardo villalobos & craig richards playing it regularly in their sets.

real name takeshi fukushima, takecha has been a key figure within japan’s electronic music scene for decades and belongs to the same pioneering crew as soichi terada and shinichiro yokota. now in his mid- fifties, ‘deep soundscapes’ is an album encompassing fukushima’s sound with every track written by the producer between 1990 and 2013. intricate percussion and crystalline chords set the tone in ‘deep drive’ before a funky bassline joins serene synths in ‘midnight things’. appearing in soichi terada’s mix for resident advisor (under its promo title ‘deep loop c’), ‘gradual atmosphere’ is comprised of a galloping beat and saccharine chimes, ‘factory 141’ sees takecha demonstrate a murkier aesthetic, whilst ‘rhodes detox’ is a definitive example of takecha’s flair for expertly balancing elements within his productions. an homage to shufflepuck cafe&#769,,, an old mac plus video game takecha would play on a black and white 9- inch monitor back in the day, ‘shufflepuck’ blends ghostly melodies with clicks, whirrs and pops. ‘calm imagination’ is a poignant affair from start to finish with its hypnotising atmosphere, contrasting to the more up-tempo ‘warm rondo’ with its soulful keys and purring low-end. tying it all together, ‘genuine innocence’ is a cut that takecha made two versions of, one with a solo from a pianist and another with more emphasis on the beat, the latter of which appears on this album.-

the first track on annas debut ep for novamute , razor was born while playing with her roland mks-80, a synth from 1985 and one of annas favourites. you can hear the fat, juicy sound on the breakdown and ever evolving throughout. the track has already been getting a great reaction when played out in her sets. escapism plays with trippy arpeggios that lay down the atmosphere for the whole track, it feels really dense and trippy but still powerful, making use of heavier drum sounds for the groove. the last track on the ep dreamweaver, is a simple track that always works well on the dance floor. anna reworked this track many times before deciding to strip down the beat and focus on the final sequence, sometimes the simple ideas are the ones that work the best.

word of advice to funk lovers, there is not a minute to lose. get on board of the big hustle’s spaceship. before we take off, let s do a little history. the band was founded in 2014 by bass player and composer sébastien levanneur and its aim is to bring together 70 s old school funk with the hippest actual sound laced with influences spanning from steely dan and headhunters, to snarky puppy and soulive. with mighty horn players, a rock and funky rhythm section, the big hustle s music has a very large variety of soundscapes. the first destination takes us to the washington, d.c. area with “turn up”. the groove is clearly go-go music flavored with the trademark sound of cowbells and of course it reminds us of zapp by the use of the talk box on lead vocals, performed here by saad el garrab. and don t miss out shaun martin (snarky puppy, erykah badu, kirk franklin amongst others) as a very special guest performing the talk box solo! second stop is “a curse, a blessing”. it’s an instrumental very much in the freddie hubbard vein during his cti years. the last leg of the a side ends with an instrumental interlude titled “flying donut”. double tribute to jay dee and flying lotus, the music is a simple hip hop loop based on samples. the b side takes us back into the past with two brilliant covers, involving rod temperton the late great british songwriter who scored some of michael jackson s biggest hits. now the idea for this b side is to do the opposite approach from the a side. taking 70 s and 80 s original music and make them travel into time to 2018. we first land with a heatwave song named “the star of a story” from their 1976 central heating album. track 2 is a herbie hancock song named “gettin to the good part” from his 1982 lite me up lp. this time traveler ep journey ends with an interlude. called “gimme dat”, the song deals with the need of new music, new sound. again, this blend of deep rooted funk laced with a contemporary edge is to be consumed without moderation. and do not forget that e.p. also stands for extended pleasure.

gerry read steps up for the sophomore release on finns 2 b real label, mass media - four booty-indebted house tracks, as freaky as they are straight-forward. the a side lurches into action with a huge buzzy bassline on mass media, followed by eerie pads, pops and whistles on big boobs. the b side provides some breathing room with dreama that girl’s spacey chops and sauntering bassline, before pinky reaches a bouncy filter-house climax to close the ep.

mad dancer ep is freda’s second offering through sydney imprint moonshoe records - the record maintains the raw crunchy nature of his debut whilst he progresses into more dissonant atmospheres. wobbling jazz loops guide the a side through 2 up-tempo yet calming house tracks. the title track mad dancer is kept alive by crunchy, swinging hi-hats and bouncy synth melodies. smoking causes is a slow burning take on disco. on the flip (breakfast) is the curveball of the 3 tracks. a darker mood is established before a syncopated break drives the ep home, exemplified by a sliding dissonant synth melody.

2018 repress - bicep make their way home to feel my bicep records for their first 12” on the imprint since their collaborative ‘dahlia’, recorded with hammer, back in september of 2015. fmb006 is a notable addition to the label - a reimagining of blaze’s seminal recording ‘lovelee dae’ - originally released on classic back in 1997, before a string of subsequent re-issues and remix packages on playhouse, true and urban tracks that included carl craig and 20:20 vision. the remix was originally designed to be included in their essential mix in 2014, but a lack of space has meant that its pressing on fmb is the first time it sees the light of day. using ralph lawson and carl finlow’s classic aforementioned acapella version as the basis of their work, the bicep lads ensnare an air of swooning euphoria in their remix that stays true to both their original productions and their dj sets. shortened vocals suffuse galloping 909s and a gleaming synth riff that certify it as a festival fail safe

the nyc and berlin based group were invited to aurally explore the archive of the seminal french director jean-luc godard and release their interpretations in an innovative new album what we leave behind. drawing on godards personal collection of shot film, reel- to-reels and historical ephemera, the recordings reveal the moments before and after the camera rolls, from stage directions and on-set asides to rehearsals, false stars and outtakes.

julian sanza and andre espeut, are two very familiar names in the scene. julian, who hails from argentinian/cuban roots and andre with his french/caribbean heritage, come together to merge electronic dance, modern funk, soul and boogie, creating their own unique melting pot of goodness! there s something distinctly anthemic about perfect system . low slung, synthed up funk, with a house tinge driven by those sweet soulful vocal harmonies - sure to get stuck in your head for days. opolopo opens up the e.p. adding his trademark disco remix magic touch to the original - upping the tempo, laying a shuffling beat behind, pumping up the bassline and getting spiritual on the keys. on the flip the situation remix channels the inner improv funk, keeping the vocals to choice snippets before the sare havlicek dub rounds the e.p. off reworking the bass synth to the point where it exudes the sleaze. this is the first in a series of collaborations between these two… keep those eyes peeled!

taking inspiration from music, nature and the elements that surround them, jukka hänninen and mika hanka aka shuffless have quickly garnered the attention of many within house and techno since making their production debut in 2016. written at the vislampi studio, located in ruutana city, finland, using a combination of hardware gear from the likes of roland, korg and arturia, here we see the duo reveal their latest work with four diverse and expansive cuts set for release this spring as they return to syncrophone s in-house imprint. opening up the ep, hänninen and hanka fluently introduce chi , a complex and evolving cut that effortlessly fuses deep, rich chords, and delicate, skipping hi-hats, before easing into the flowing groove of lahti with its jazz-tinged melodies and heady tones guiding the production into lighter territories. on the flip, nime Ñvailla introduces a matrix of hazy textures amongst crunchy percussion licks and dubbed out atmospherics as the duo return to deeper, darker realms, before title cut puollaskel punctuates the package in classy fashion, laying down gritty analog percussion, resounding kicks and subtly programmed nuances to conclude an excellently worked ep.

mount liberation unlimited strikes back! after releases on tim sweeneys beats in space label and everyones favourite oddball house institution studio barnhus, the swedish duo, consisting of tom lagerman and niklas janzon, land on planet permanent vacation. body language is the fifth release for mlu and you can feel that they have been places and come some ways, since their debut ep in 2014: this ode to dancing sees lagerman and janzon heading into more pop-y territories than before. the swedish version is a full on pop disco track with rich instrumentation and infectious vocals that underline mlu’s status as one of the best disco and house live acts around these days. while the mouth mix is the swedish interpretation of chicago house and gets even more physical with its drum-heavy beats and computerized vocals. for your karaoke party and to round up the package, we also included the instrumental of the swedish version. rocka din kropp!

farron gets back on shaw cuts with his fourth record, invincible shaolin a tale of double-dealing, rivalry, royalty and bad blood. manchu general pus evil quest to eradicate the shaolin tradition unfolds, cunningly pitting north and south shaolins against each other. spring break ya neck opens the clash with its rhythmic shifts and whirling synth pads. the northern masters prevail. after pus henchmen secretly kill the southern shaolin, the general blames the masters from the north, unleashing chaos. cosmicaph restores order, its pounding drums and floating melodies giving new strength to the southern shaolin. revenge must be taken. to prepare for conquer, the southern master sends three of his disciples to three masters to learn their secret weapons. sir hatch sets the pace with rolling punches, dirty synths and sharp percussion as the three disciples transform into lethal fighting machines. just before the final encounter between the shaolin, leibniz lands on the scene with his fresh interpretation of spring break ya neck, revealing to both schools that they have been deceived. joining forces, north and south battle the general and his men, led by leibnizs funky drum patterns and turbulent synth action. and the shaolin spirit lives on
