for this release metrist delves into a set of carefully constructed and deeply rhythmic but ear-grabbingly idiosyncratic, mixed fidelity dancefloor-geared oddities. the first three tracks are united, in a fashion, by the artist’s skill at programming a series of drum tracks that set a definite tone for the productions. within a quite partisan field of often microscopic generic variety, largely pinned down to the tempo and timbre of electronic drums, here metrist has pursued a tricky-to-define path. the bounce of new jack swing is twisted amongst stripped back polyrhythms, equal parts groove and glitch seasoned by some futuristic acid filters that create a constantly shifting aura of space and textural nuance around the individual drum hits. quite often arrhythmic interjections punctuate these ‘grooves’, be it the sawing bursts of noise and snarled, incoherent vocals on ‘an soaep’, the non-language and playful, bubbling bass surrounding the half time feel of ‘on golden seize’ that builds to something approximating an industrial take on uk funky or the brash sub-wobbles that intrude ‘pantomimer tongue’s juddering knife-scraping-on-a-balloon stutters. ‘caaacel the horze’ closes the record in a less weighty style, with crunchy arpeggios running on a synth that sounds like it’s picking up interference from a radio channel, as snatches of moaned vocals allude to a deeply ambiguous yet chilling narrative behind the music. thudding kicks intrude on the skittish melody but in a non-rhythmic way reminiscent of someone trying desperately to snatch your attention by banging on the adjacent wall. gauzy melodic textures in the background provide a calming counterpoint to the uneasy qualities of the composition

yaleesa hall is back on his home label will & ink with two eps in quick succession. after releasing his debut album in 2016 this is the first solo output from the amsterdam based producer on the label. this first ep is entitled zoe hayley laura and features a trio of tracks that melt electro, techno and broken beats in arresting ways. opening up the ep is zoe price, a silky electro track with shooting synths and big downward bass strikes that add real depth. it s a urgent and arresting affair to wake up the floor. hayley roach then has much more forceful drums that come in one two punch combinations to the gut. synths writhe and gurgle up top as pads rise up and down the scale and the whole thing is brilliantly large. laura pomeroy then rocks back and forth on its heels, with train track like percussion and malfunctioning machine stabs. it s a real tussle between different elements and locks you right in as a result. once again then, the irrepressible yaleesa hall leads from the front.

reissue of eblen s fourth album, wonderful experimental music here. tip! mexican guitarist and ambient artist eblen macari s música para planetarios (music for planetariums) was originally composed for weekly performances in the luis enrique erro planetarium in mexico city to accompany a voyage through the galaxy. the album, released in 1987 was based around macari s solo performances using ensoniq esq-1, a korg poly 800, two guitars and pre-hispanic ocarinas. the expanded arrangements recorded for the album include a full stable of pre-hispanic percussion and beautiful baroque harpsichord played by macari s wife. this expansive interplanetary soliloquy is undoubtedly macaris masterpiece. remastered from the original master tapes

fausto messina is a veteran dj and producer from treviso, a small town on the plain between the gulf of venice and the alps. fausto has been releasing music for more than 10 years and pica pica is his debut e.p. on cadenza. in the track named pica pica a recurrent evocative voluminous chord is convoyed by a classy powerful kick drum and an organic symphony of fluffy percussions and metallic bonks, with a triumphant layer of dense whistles and shimmering cymbals. the extremely intense vibrant rhythms of idiophono contrast with the gentle reverberating harmonies of an ensemble of struck idiophones, angelically flowing in the background of the track. the smooth magnetic flux of planets ballet concludes the e.p. with high style. this jacky stride over a stack of steamy synthesisers and bubbly bleeps is a golden tune for a quivering late-night dance-floor.

berlin based producer zigan aldi has always been open for different cultural influences in his music. an openess that might go back to his own background since zigan had been brought up in the eastern part of turkey, before he moved to germany when he was 14. apart from working in various jobs it was always the music that kept him going and let him experience his true passion. after releasing music on bedouin’s label truecolors or 3000 grad it was about time his diverse music finds another home on underyourskin records. therefore zigan delivers four exclusive tracks that depict his approach to electronic music with a mostly downtempo vibe. ‘luton’, ‘seems to be’ and ‘olin’ follow the path of the label’s as well as zigan’s philosophy: a slightly oriental influence that meets darker multi-layered synth chords to create significant atmospheres that can work at any time at the club. ‘miracle’ featuring sandeck is just what the track title suggest: a musical miracle. as the track slowly enfolds its groove to the audience, it is the guitar riffs and the vocals that sum up magic of this track at this very intimate moment.

instrumentalkompositionen. mit dem in den siebzigerjahren beginnenden siegeszug elektronischer tanzmusik hat sich der remix als produktionsmethode fest im musikbusiness etabliert. dabei ist die kunstform, bereits vorhandenes material neu und vor allem ganz persönlich zu interpretieren, ein phänomen, das es erstens schon vorher und zweitens in der klassischen musik gab. der new yorker pianist bruce brubaker ist ein künstler, der seine gesamte karriere diesem konzept gewidmet hat. er wurde dafür bekannt, stücke anderer künstler nicht nur nachzuspielen, sondern in deren kompositionen seine persönlichkeit originär einzuschreiben, so dass sie eine neue, einzigartige form annehmen. zu seinen besonderen stärken zählt die interpretation der musik von philip glass. auf seinem album -codex- geht brubaker einen schritt weiter, indem er gleich zwei originale auf künstlerisch editierende weise miteinander in dialog bringt. zum einen werke aus der -codex faenza-, einer erst in den 1930ern wiederentdeckten sammlung mit instrumentalmusik für orgel, klavier und harfe aus dem frühen 15. jahrhundert, zum anderen stücke aus terry rileys 1964 veröffentlichter zusammenstellung -keyboard study no. 2-.

a quartet of heavy reworks. reginald omas mamode iv truly does what he does best, bringing a percussive, low-slung funk to one of the most ethereal and beautiful pieces of soul on the album, sunshine. glenn astro, elevates bossa b to a jostling, bouncing shuffler that eventually turns around and heads skyward with uplifting chords and irresistible bass. deoke heads into the darker regions of the original for his hugely loved remix of bossa b. the bass on this one is ridiculous and has caused damage to a couple of sound systems were aware of (genuinely). finally the ever exceptional mr beatnick simply took the stereo track for kalimba 2 and edited it into a mind-opening dub. handling bass and harmonics as only he can, a true highlight of this high quality remix package.

kampana delivers once again with a pair of dance floor gems that will please lovers of funk, disco and gospel alike. on the a-side, aroop roy means serious business with reason to dance. driven by an outrageous slap bass, infectious horn stabs and a limb-shaking vocal refrain, its no surprise that this has been the secret weapon of his recent sets around the world. on the flip, detroit native peter croce, fresh from the huge success of his razor-n-tape ep, comes in equally strong, with the gospel-fuelled disco cut just like heaven. the track builds patiently, lingering on a raw disco groove, honing in on a powerful brass section and spirit-lifting vocals, and eventually climaxing with epic strings and thunderous piano.

following the reissue of his cult album ti jan pou velo, hs decided to continue their collaboration with edmony krater and record a new album! the first one in 30 years! comes with insert. as an avant-gardist percussionist, singer and trumpet player, edmony krater has always worked to develop and promote the gwoka music of guadeloupe and to feed it with different influences, from jazz to reggae.

recorded while gerald was in jamaica working on a project with lee perry in 1980. the master tapes of the four tracks that were recorded at the harry j sessions were only recently discovered. utopia was the only track that had been given a final mix back in the day. it was released on 7- on the black star liner later in the year and then reissued on partial records in 2014. the other tracks were never mixed until early 2017 when this task was undertaken by dougie wardrop. as well as mixing jerusalem (gerald did a later version of this tune for rej forte s jah works label in the early 1990s), working for the dollar and constant spring , it was decided that utopia should also enjoy a fresh mix.
