leaving meaning ist das fünfzehnte studioalbum von swans und das erste nach der bekanntgabe der auflösung der band in ihrer letzten formation. es folgt dem 2016er werk the glowing man und wurde von michael gira geschrieben und produziert, aber schafft dennoch den brückenschlag zu aktuellen und ehemaligen swans-musiker*innen, mitgliedern von angels of light sowie anna und maria von hausswolff, ben frost, the necks, baby dee, jennifer gira und anderen. das teilnehmende, musikalische kollektiv wurde sehr genau von gira ausgewählt, wollte er doch seine vision des neuen albums aus eben den individuellen kreativstärken der musikern schöpfen. gerade diese impulse formen leaving meaning zu einem der spannendsten alben in der diskografie von swans.

giant swan are debuting on mannequin records through the death of the machines serie, the dancefloor/experimental oriented side of the label, dedicated to new artists. robin stewart & harry wright team up to create an acerbic marriage of energised, aggressive dance music, quaking bass and hypnotic electronic noise. across a table of machines and pedals, incorporating abused guitar and liberal vocal manipulation, giant swan create a cross-breed of hypnotic bass, industrial percussion and disorientating energy delivered with telepathic intricacy.

contort yourself continues to explore the crossover between decrepit 80s industrial and the modern artists drawing inspiration from those heady, experimental times, and the results are as thrilling as ever. haydees no gouvernance is a brutal charge of drums and distorted yelps, while 1983 jam de omnibus dubitandum by hunting lodge fuses layers of distortion and proto acid with live bass and brittle drums. catriel lays out a sinister but seductive message on nbdymksmefeellowlikeudo, giant swan bring their raucous avant-techno styles to dare and then gotshell remix hunting lodge into a thunderous industrial techno charge.

danish composer the swan and the lake is at it again with his trademark widescreen soundscapes wrapped around eight new tracks of exquisite scandinavian balearica. with the release of his first album -moments- last year on copenhagen’s music for dreams, we were introduced to a unique artistic vision. with one foot in the ambient chill out spectrum and the other in everything from classical avantgarde, idm and jazz, the music of emil svane breum under his alias the swan and the lake is both very accessible yet complex. on his new album -clouds- we see him expand on those same ideas and with seemingly simple means achieve extraordinary strong emotions. opening side a, the jazzy intro of -fresh food- leads us into a sublime piece of hazy ambient groover that could easily be mistaken for a lost 80s production from japan. -clouds over Østerbro- keeps things playfully cool and adds elements of scat singing and xylophones, layered over breum’s shimmering bright chords. while the title suggests we are still on danish soil, this feels like a five minute vacation to a tropical paradise. guitarist johan liepstack makes a guest appearance on -summer in december- which comes off as an understated anthem that could break out into euphoria at any second, but manages to stay in a sombre state all the way through. on the track -plastic pacific ocean remake- we are visited once more by airy vangelis-like vocals which assume the role of a nurturing angel, guiding us to a comforting state of relaxation and healing, as breum lays down an overwhelmingly beautiful synth serenade with chords that hit you right at the core of your most vulnerable state. flip over for the mallorca inspired track -port d andratx- which comes in two versions - part 1 (sun) shines like a perfect escape into that cafe del mar/ hostal la torre sunset while the more deep and melancholic part 2 is aptly named rain. the gentle trickling of -waterfalls- sees breum mimic the eternal cycle of water, creating an organic and ethereal composition that stretches out seemingly without beginning or end. and finally on -heaven’s voice- we see breum in his most epic and emotional mood, as he steers us through a slow explosive force of cinematic sounds. it all ends with a heartfelt spoken word contribution by guest vocalist neonbi.

die re-issue von swans -the great annihilator- bietet ein komplettes remastering des albums sowie das komplette solo-album -drainland- von michael gira als bonus. beide werke entstanden in der gleichen schaffensperiode, so dass es sich anbietet diese inhaltlich zusammenzufassen. -the great annihilator- erschien ursprünglich1995, das remaster erscheint von den orginal-aufnahme-tapes. diese aufgabe übernahm mit viel detailarbeit doug henderson, sehr zur zufriedenheit von michael gira, der das ergebnis als -a revelation of great sonic effect- beschreibt. wer das majestätische -i am the sun- im neuen sound hört, weiß um die kraft der aufnahme.

marking a clandestine arrival out of, seemingly, nowhere, black swan emerges from the shadowy billows of smoke to immerse listeners in a lucid, cavernous dream, tracing silhouettes in the darkness with drowning ambience and orchestrated drones that screech and howl intermittently amongst the disorienting magnetic tape disturbances. black swan operates under a guise of far-away sounds traveling through murky waters, drowning the listener in its heavy-handed layers of ghostly resonance.

the enigma that is black swan has emerged from the shadows to deliver its second work. awash with chilling ambience, found sounds and haunting samples, the quiet divide reins in the phantasmagoria, examining the blurred in-between, the darkness that lies at the divide. creeping ever so slowly out of the confined spaces of its previous work, in 8 movements, black swan moves further into the crevice, mining territory unbefitting to most composers. upon surfacing from the muck and grime, the resulting work is disquieting and poignant, exposing the listener to the inner workings of the desolate in hope that they will never have to plunge themselves into it.
