eine einfache, lichtdurchflutete hütte mit direktem blick aufs wasser. arbeiten, kochen, schlafen: alles in einem raum, dessen zentrum - zwischen leinwänden, Ölfarben, fotoapparaten, stativen, werkzeugen und pinseln - ein großer, mit farben bekleckster eichentisch bildet, auf den die im kühlen nordostwind schwankenden Äste ihre wandernden schatten werfen. in diesem stillen setting entsteht -mare-, das zweite album von christian löffler. zwei große, gläserne schiebetüren hinter dem tisch können geöffnet werden und lassen so das grundrauschen der umgebung von außen nach drinnen durchdringen. ein kleiner ofen spendet wärme auch an kalten tagen. field recordings aus dem umliegenden küstenwald treffen bei -mare- auf synthesizer sounds, aufgenommen im draußen-studio, der terrasse. umwuchert von dschungelartigen weiden stehen selbstmodifizierte synthesizer, eine vererbte marimba, eine mandolinzither und viele weitere kleinere klangerzeugende gerätschaften auf freier flur, bereit, um melodien inklusive der umgebungsgeräusche, rauschen, knistern und knacken, aufzunehmen. das mikrofon überträgt nicht nur die auf einem glockenspiel angeschlagene melodie, sondern auch die natürlichen nebengeräusche, das leicht wahrnehmbare rauschen der brandung, die rufe vorbeiziehender vögel, das rascheln der blätter oder den plätschernden regen. manche stücke basieren auf einstündigen klangcollagen - verschiedene scharf geschaltete mikros nehmen alles auf was gespielt, geklopft, gesungen oder gezupft wird. analoge drum machines und provisorisch eingespielte rhythmuselemente geben den kompositionen ihre struktur und helfen die improvisierten versatzstücke zu ordnen und in form zu halten. -mare- erzählt vom verwundet sein, betört werden, dem etwas, jemanden oder sich selbst verlieren, aber auch dem sich öffnen und gewinnen.

fast hätte es an dieser stelle keinen neuen release von ki records zu verkünden gegeben, denn die beiden jungs hinter colo, nick smith und ben corr, haben mal eben so in der hochphase der albumproduktion ihren laptop verschusselt. backups? fehlanzeige! da war der debütlangspieler schon fast fertig: zehn tracks mit 150 bis 200 audiospuren – viele stunden feinsten bastelns und schraubens, einfach weg. zum glück ist nicht die ganze welt schlecht und so manch ein finder ehrlich und das gerät gelangte unbeschädigt in die hände der besitzer zurück und das erstlingsalbum *ur* doch noch in die pressung und in den katalog von ki. der name des albums ist ein wortspiel und verweist nicht etwa auf undergroud resistance, sondern auf das englisch wort colo-ur.

before the release of his debut album on ki, monokle throws in an ep to show us what to expect. the beautiful track >swan< pretty much describes perfectly what monokle means when he says that simple rhythms and catchy beats get him bored quickly. being influenced by the music of the british imprint warp for example, the sankt petersburg based artist has pretty much developed his own interpretation of well, what should it be called? it is monokle! he has his very own aesthetic approach to music and has a very fine hand for sublime melodies and atmospheres. on the b side he teams up with his friend and partner milinal. >swan< gets a proper retouch by daisuke tanabe, who shares monokles deep soundscapes and is just the right member of the ki family to get his hands on this ep.

>aspen< is the name of christian loefflers single before his debut album on ki called >a forest<. the name of the single is not to be misunderstood as a dedication to the ski resort in colorado. its rather a dedication to christian loefflers home region in the north of germany. loeffler walked out into the forests near darss, to take field recordings of the trees that commonly grow in that area, which are called >aspen<. the landscape near darss is characterized by signs of storm and rough sea climate, but is also considered as a popular health resort in germany. the tracks on >aspen< create this contrary atmosphere: noise and silence, destruction and peacefulness, electronic sounds and traditional instruments unite in harmony. the cover artwork for >aspen< was taken by christian loeffler himself in the forests of darss.

following the debut lp on ki, we have put together a few of our favorite artists to remix some tracks of their choice. it was important for us, that the artists kept their individual approach to their genre, so that we could get a very diverse release. first up is the japanese producer stereociti, who just released his debut album on mojuba records. he gives the title track >reisegefaehrte< his very own deep touch. second up is our close friend glitterbug, who seems to create a very own genre with his interpretation of >barracuda<. on the flipside stundman goes straight to the dancefloor. jacking beats and pounding basslines are his >reminder<. and as if p.laoss knew what the real deal is, he turned >subsistence< into a fata morgana trip back to the time when dub was really dub. perfect completion of what we expected from this remix ep.

the second part of the ki split series is a feature of our homegrown talents christian loeffler and steffen kirchhoff. the two friends are part of the ki family since the beginning (loeffler was responsible for the first release on ki and kirchhoff for the third). both artist have a close connection in sound aesthetics and atmosphere, since they still inspire each other every day. on the ki split series 2 you can listen to christian loeffler and steffen kirchhoff experimenting with beautiful samples and underlining the whole piece with their unique sound structure. both in their respective very own romantic approach to deep, melancholic techno music.

the two hamburg based acts me succeeds and arp aubert are responsible for the first part of a ki records split series. on the ep named after the city in the north of germany the two acts combine their friendship and musical preferences to remix each other and contribute one very own track on each side. me succeeds, with their members mona steinwidder, sebastian kokus and lorin strohm, is a part of hamburgs labelcollective i saw music and their songs combine indie pop with electronic beats and chords. arp aubert consists of the two founding members of mirau records: stephan lorenz and marco niemerski. niemerski is better known for his productions as tensnake, but keeps arp aubert running as a matter of heart. the ki-split 1/3 (hamburg) is truly a family matter. because of their close friendship, me succeeds and arp aubert have created a very intense and emotional record. by remixing each other and combining their musical background this release turns out to be a very special one for ki and the acts themselves. the cover was created by me succeeds in well known ki tradition to make this piece of music something special and memorable.

for the second release on ki records we invited a very special and talented artist from japan to join our label. daisuke tanabe, who studied art in tokyo and london, has been producing music for the last 13 years. various releases on zero dbs fluid ounce label and an impressive amount of remixes for gilles peterson’s brownswood imprint have proven daisuke tanabes versatility and talent for modern experimental electronic music. as a live act and dj, he performed with gilles peterson, onra, tim exile, hudson mohawke and clark. we decided to dare a leap into a more experimental way by publishing his outstanding flowers on a wall. the four-track ep will be released in august 2009 (500 copies ww on limited vinyl), simultaneously to his first album on japans circulation records.

ein take, ein track. so schwingt im vocalpart des songs doorframe noch der raumklang der session mit und ueberzieht den sound mit einer sproeden, verwaschenen note. auch das vocal von holiday ist en passant entstanden, aufgenommen wurde es mit dem mikrophon einer spielekonsole, war halt grad nichts anderes da und das ergebnis gefiel den jungs von colo und ki records so gut, dass der track vorab als 7inch veršffentlicht wurde, remix von christian loeffler inklusive.
