experienced crate diggers are no doubt familiar with new birth, the 17-piece funk ensemble sampled on classic hip-hop records by wu-tang clan, de la soul, junior m.a.f.i.a., black sheep, lil wayne, ice cube, and many more. the genesis of new birth can be traced back to the nite-liters, a louisville-based instrumental outfit. founded in 1963 by motown songwriter/producer harvey fuqua and saxophonist tony churchill, the nite-liters released a handful of albums in the early 70s, scoring a few minor hits and perfecting the sound that would power new birth to further success as the decade progressed. while much of the the nite liters’ early material has been overlooked, their self-titled debut album is worth revisiting. originally released on rca records in 1970, the nite liters is a raw, soulful masterpiece that has been sampled by kmd, ghostface killah and others.

if you re going to beat em down, you need the right tools. on the label s second release, grimy trax has given you a couple hammers. the a-side, dejay cease s the fixer is straight chicago. we re talking banging 909 funk that might be found buried on a particularly unhinged ron hardy mix. a simple bass line and two notes of acid are all it takes to make the floor go wild. this is functional heat with enough atmosphere to engage the mind, body and soul. on the b-side, rising chicago son boogienite proves he s earned the hype. boy, ok is an instant classic thanks to some recognizable disco strings and a funky escalator of a bassline. the producer uses a trippy, rubberband synth which eventually turns into rhythmic, teasing vocal. the mixdown is ridiculous, especially as the lengthy track passes the halfway mark. boogie brings the bassline in and out in between beautiful ambient rhodes and a call and response male and female vocal. those strings hit again and you feel no pain.

the third instalment for nightime drama returns with infinite loops presenting something special again with his non conformist sound. the title track dirt, a what could become a staple in the dub techno world. a mission in a sandstorm.. espionage in the desert.. moody, driven with gritty stabs and textures surrounded with experimental atmospheric elements. deep and dubby, a real masterpiece and a must have track! if you loved ntd001 then you will find persiflage takes it to the next level of what you would call the infinite loops hypnotic groove. beautiful,sparse,unpredictable chords that hide and jump out backed with driving beats! both tracks complimenting each other on this high quality release topped off with mastering by the brilliant stefan betke (aka pole).

music is strongly linked to memory, sometimes just a simple note will trigger a deep feeling of nostalgia or emotion. the new homesick series was created by music enthusiasts who are living half a world away from their birthplaces. their concept is a play on memory, to re-edit and rework songs from the past into something which is timeless, tracks which feel fresh but retain their memories. for the first release, the homesick team have curated three pieces by drop out orchestra, late nite tuff guy, zimmer, and amadei. doo have carefully reworked -no scrubs- into a warm, bass driven, disco jam suited for the dancefloor, alntg has provided a solid groove theory lesson as only he can, and the ep is rounded-off with a special (double) bonus track for all the people who love 80s-era french pop music, reworked by zimmer and the asia-based newcomer amadei.
