repress alert! matlock s finest rhythm plate resurface brandishing a new label in pressed for time, and what better way to inaugurate it than revisiting one of their key tracks. released back in 2002 on the mantis label run by atjazz, lean part 2 was a wonderfully sleazy slab of deepness notable for the lascivious vocal hook that hung slinkily over the production throughout. it still sounds superb some 13 years on and is backed with an unreleased version that was done in the same period, along with deliciously freaky new leaner mix from the pair.

naïf 008 opens a series of five eps that will be released around the release of the dj-mix-cd also named naif which has its release in april 2018 the first strike comes with two blinding techno tracks: running man is a contribution by the gentleman of techno steve bicknell. the other comes from the young swedish producer that goes by the name of kuf and who is part of the arsenik crew. besides that we find two compositions by phillip sollmann himself that show his abstract and experimental approach. while aliasing bells is a texture of sampled tibetan bells tag3 by his side-project autolyse is a jam on a light-sensor-controlled custom-made synth. perfect for layering on top of a mix. after more then three years of silence as a producer, efdemin aka phillip sollmann returns with a striking hybrid concept that merges the album format with the continuous dj mix format, presenting completely new material in a seamless manner. the cd-mix, named naif, officially reinstates his label of the same name and is a sprawling tour of inner space featuring 19 distinct tracks from fellow producers along with an additional ten that feature efdemin himself (either as soloist or collaborator). the release condenses his decade-long dj-ing journey and evolution as a producer into a single potent elixir of contemporary techno. naïf consists of completely unreleased material from both himself and valued collaborators, all of which will eventually manifest as ep releases: five on his own naïf label and two more on curle.

kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of congo beat the drum, but on this second release for his label brush & broom, he s decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. honda is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while yamaha takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. suzuki is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of up-for-it early trax records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. toyota finishes the ep off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage

matt flanagan has been making music as defekt, ess and tinfoil for the past few years, so who better to put out the debut release on first cut? we decided early on that there was no point in repeating his admittedly fine back catalogue, so matt went off one evening and did a 30-minute live jam on his machines. there was no real plan, but between us, we picked the three best bits, which you now own. then we had to come up with a name. initially, we toyed with the idea of calling it ‘fekt’ but then decided that only a local audience would appreciate the joke and that it wouldn’t travel well. octal step then emerged as the clear favourite. we sealed the deal to release ‘toner head’ over a cup of takeaway coffee on a bench in the stephen’s green cente in dublin. and why is gunter walraff on the other side of this sheet? well, he seems like a cool guy. plus he’s german and has a moustache - what’s there not to like about that?

this is music that comes from playing records. dj fiskars have done it for 15 years, subconsciously gathering an assortment of ideas, vibes and moments on the job. it’s only now as he’s starting his career as a recording artist those ideas start to materialize in an accessible form on wax. it’s fair to suggest that the record has a day side and a night side. “filippa” is a somewhat balearic piece: on the shelf it lands somewhere between your omar s records and a mario kart disc. on the flip, “key largo’s” mellow yet banging house grooves drop especially well at the after hours party. the release also marks the dawn of fiskars’ new vinyl-first imprint leave the man in peace with his kit – be on the lookout for more releases in 2018.

new yorks marcos cabral steps up for his first full release on dimensions recordings, with the nature walk ep. following on from his epic prochainement masterpiece on dimensions 002, the ep provides a glimpse into the mind of a well-established and hugely respected artist. nature walk is a broad ep that demonstrates just why marcos records have been finding their way into a multitude of djs bags for the last fifteen years. from his work with jacques renault as runaway, and his coveted hamilton dance records output to his more recent deeper and darker leanings for leading labels such as clone, l.i.e.s. and mule musiq, marcos has quietly and studiously worked at developing an impressive catalogue which most folks who have brushed with house and techno will have heard, whether they know it or not. the ep provides a snapshot of some of the tastes and styles that marcos has experimented with over the years, the rolling, energetic and optimistic sounding, not quite house, not quite techno of wishful gives way to the brooding, dub techno of title track, nature walk. cape cod sees marcos in classic, house mode with a cut that could easily have dropped on nycs nu groove records, whereas rice a roni is a no nonsense nugget of twisted, grinding, acid. the ep rounds off with lets see how the light goes through it, a spacey hypnotic workout for the late hours and a fitting end to a stand out ep from the self proclaimed, hardest working man!

bawrut has had an amazing couple of years. since kicking our label off back in 2015 with the modern acid classic ciquita (12inches of which will now set you back silly money on discogs), the madrid-based producer has gone from strength to strength. last year saw him tear down sets at sonar and farr festivals, drop a feted new ep on hard fist records, and have his music soundtrack numerous adverts for fabric events. other djs have been quick to show their appreciation, and bawrut’s unique appeal can be seen in how far and wide across the spectrum his music has featured. optimo, avalon emerson, patrick topping, jackmaster, artwork, andrew weatherall and many more have all supported heavily. were proud to kickstart bawrut’s 2018 with 4x4, a brand new ep of typically leftfield bangers. these four tracks come on like a whirlwind journey through a bawrut dj set, with something for every time of the night. ghettoscar fuses african chants with burbling acid, building the kind of goodtime dancefloor warmth bawrut is famed for. more cowbell does exactly what you’d expect, giving djs a glorious, cowbell-powered disco bomb that fuses the spirit of incredible bongo band with classic nyc house. i hear voices is a crazy ride, with an expertly cut up vocal sample repurposed into a weird, descending riff that’s quite unlike anything else out there. throw in bawrut’s trademark kitbag of carnival whistles, rattling latin percussion and a creeping acid line that works itself up into a soul-salving joy and youve got a modern classic on your hands. finally, lead track three sounds is probably bawruts biggest moment to date, a peak time jacking techno monster built from the most minimal of elements - drums, claps, a one note bass squelch and a tom drum gone wild. bawrut takes this tom sound and treats it like a 303, pushing far off the rails, working it up and up, twisting it through pitch and frequency like a man possessed, raising its pressure til it tears off the roof. theres no one else making techno quite like it - and you can expect dancefloors to be going crazy to the mania of three sounds throughout 2018 so there you have it - four more missives from the wizard of madrid. play em loud.

next cocoon floor bomb! cocoon recordings is back with a bang after the winter break, cranking up the pressure once again. what s more, we re seriously pleased that we ve managed to land johannes volk for the new season. johannes has been making us smile with his productions for more than 12 years and considering his 2006 debut appeared on jeff mills axis label, it s easy to guess which direction his cocoon release is going. there are no dreamy minimal sounds or deep house trips this time round, instead you ll find headstrong techno pumping out of the speakers. tears & walls drives forward relentlessly with its meaty kick and metallic open hi-hats setting the pace. energetic and demanding throughout, johannes volk certainly takes no prisoners! -a little story about time and space- follows in its footsteps although the mood here is notably more detroit, taking us back to productions on cult labels like red planet, metroplex or the axis records sound. volk layers the track with more prominent harmonies and hypnotic arpeggios, giving it a subtle yet highly effective trance touch. the warm analog strings in the middle section underline this emotional impact and make a little story about time and space a guaranteed sunrise song for the upcoming spring and summer season, heartwarming and dance floor friendly in equal measures!

oblique returns with a highly personal project: 3 tracks from (or with) friends who all helped create/inspire/influence the sound of the label.
ivano tetelepta, roger gerressen and ben buitendijk already had loads of jam sessions when suddenly “dilated pupils” happened. it launched a project that consists of spontaneous studio jams in various formats (involving a dozen of befriended artists on multiple ep’s, remixes and even an label). six years later the original track, after which the project was named, will finally see the light of day!

cyspe’s “reminisce” more than deserves the full b-side to close the ep off. a stunning 14 minute trip through the depths of what this incredibly talented producer has to offer!

sacred summits returns after a two-year hiatus with an album of interpretations of the music of eric satie by acclaimed composer morgan fisher. active for over 50 years morgans career has moved from 60s number one hit wonders love affair, to 70s rocknroll keyboardist in mott the hoople, before finally on to 80s ambient, improvisation and soundtracks, working with the likes of yoko ono, haroumi hosono and dip in the pool. based in japan since the mid-80s, fishers long-standing admiration for erik satie (1866- 1925) led to these inside satie recordings. satie’s unique work as a precursor to artistic movements such as minimalism, surrealism and repetitive music are acknowledged but for long periods he was not given the accolades his music warranted. a strange, eccentric, surreal man, he was never as acclaimed as the established masters, but influenced not only the likes of debussy but also many of the dada artists. on this album morgan played his music freely after just a brief look at the scores. recorded in just three days, it features piano, melodica, synthesisers, and morgans favoured tape delay system. inside satie is one of the first albums i recorded in japan shortly after moving here in 1985. in three days i improvised on several of my favourite satie themes. mostly i played piano as well as the rich, analog-sounding yamaha gs-1 (precursor of the dx-7), and sometimes used long tape delays to build layers of sound. all the pieces were recorded in single takes no overdubs (no time!).

everything begins with changes, whether you re moving geographically or emotionally. aera’s album „the sound path” tells the story of this sentiment.
born in the high north of germany and now a berlin resident, ralf schmidt aka aera first appeared on the electronic music map when he established his own aleph music label back in 2010. with only a handful of releases, aera was able to lay out his very own musically topography on the cutting edges between house, psychedelia and breakbeats. this colourful mix culminated on his debut album „offseason traveller” in 2013, resonating the past forty years of electronic music, which brought him the attention of a wider audience as well as fellow djs and producers. so it was a logical consequence that his talent also attracted other labels and lead to widely praised releases on innervisions, maeve or john talabot’s hivern discs. with these, aera’s sound bloomed further into bubbly acid and trancey territorries and his fine reputation as a singular producer, travelling dj and remixer flourished. with „the sound path” aera continues his musical travels and permanent vacation is gladly hitchhiking on that ride. his second album is the most coherent and definitely most personal work to date. here, he has perfected his sound even further - adding nuances from the meadows of new age, kraut cliffs and high-flying kites of ambient. complete with the cinematic and nature-esque qualities of ralf’s music, it will draw you in deeply through a great variety of landscapes before your inner eye. however, you’ll never lose track, because this path is beautifully illuminated.

with many writers a theme develops in their works that, over time, reveals color and definition previously unseen, not just a new perspective, but a new understanding. “lofeye” is a concept album and personal testament that philadelphia rapper lojii (fka uhlife) has been piecing together over the last three years, giving only hints with 2015’s no ebola, 2016’s dutti, and 2017’s acclaimed collaborative album due rent with producer swarvy on portland-based imprint fresh selects. in lojii’s own words, “lofeye is about working with limited resources and making the highest quality life out of what the f**k you got. it’s when you’re ‘lo-fi’ by circumstance (not just for aesthetic) but your aim is always higher. in essence, this is an lp about being rooted in the dirt you come from but reaching for the sky above you.”

vyvyan wants to keep his real identity secret, which is something i can’t help but respect (i did the same for a couple of years). without the context of personality, the music really does do the talking, and in this instance it has a lot to say.

over the past few years orchestral instrumental music from outside the classical establishment has become huge, and neil leiter and margaret hermant of the belgian echo collective have witnessed the evolution and extraordinary rise of this movement right up close. they ve worked with some of the most important players, including stars of the lid, dustin o’halloran and adam wiltze’s a winged victory for the sullen and o’halloran’s solo projects, as well as jóhann jóhannsson. and though the echo collective members themselves very much do come from within the classical music establishment, they don t care which side of the fence they are seen to be on.

wah wah 45s will release orange whip, the new album by their latest signing, honeyfeet. the outfit, who have received praise from the likes of the guardian, have also set festivals alight up and down the country with their unique melange of sounds. for the last couple of years the honeyfeet (who name from a line in the blues brothers film) have been a conduit for the ideas and expressions of an exotic mixture of manchester based musicians. this genre-defying band incorporate styles including jazz, folk and hip hop into their music. someone once called it folk-hop and barrelhouse-pop, and that’s just vague enough to make sense.

after the sublime triple 12inch re-issue of the sonar bases 4-10 album on deeptrax records, it s now time for the second installment in the sonar base transmissions series: the album dark matter . all 6 tracks were produced by frank de groodt around 2004/2005 and were only released in the inner circle, never released on vinyl. this mini lp still sounds as fresh as it was produced 13 years ago, experimental on the drums and synths. when listening to sonic discharge and velvet sky of sonar 6 , the link with drexciya is easily made. sonar base takes you further into outer space territory with the dark sounds of polygone suffering and the title track dark matter there is the clear idm feel of tracks like meet you at tower 3 on sonar 7 . dark matter is a hypothetical type of matter distinct from baryonic matter (ordinary matter such as protons and neutrons), neutrinos and dark energy. dark matter has never been directly observed, however, its existence would explain a number of otherwise puzzling astronomical observations the mini lp is limited to 400 black versions and 100 on limited edition purple marbled vinyl, pressed by deepgrooves and fully remastered by thee j johanz. you know the drill!!

octave one announce their new album under the much loved random noise generation guise. the first rng release was falling in dub in 1991 and sounding just as fresh 27 years later, endustry is due for release this spring. something of a new take on their creative process the burden brothers made most of this music on the road while they toured over the past year, using the country they were in at each time they recorded to influence and inspire each track. we were tucked away in so many hotel rooms that we decided to make sure we brought enough extra equipment so that we could set up a true lab to create from country to country and make the grooves that we wanted to experiment with on the dance floor. comments lawrence. this body of work encompasses 7 full length cuts, naturally all with that classic octave one emotion. alkaylze, more than any of tracks on this project, embraced the original spirit of random noise generation in so much as the machine seemed to be really guide the creative process. adds lenny much of the foundation of the composition was very accidental, but inspirational, with various musical devices interpreting data in a very unexpected results. it actually came together quite quickly but things just fell into place so naturally. after touring and making music for decades the spirit and essential energy of the craft is what keeps them eternally inspired to keep creating and touring the globe. once it takes hold of you you cant stop even if you wanted to. says the pair, and so endustry is born.

amsterdam based label anagram readies label co-founder sinfol s first solo release in three years entitled pull back . the release, which features four passionate tracks, sees the light of day in the beginning of april. since the launch of anagram three years ago the label has put out a steady flow of releases from artists such as anetha, octual, stefan vincent, elad magdasi and haze. however, the imprint has also acted as the main platform for sinfol s own productions. blurring the line between various subgenres, the dutch artist is an eclectic one and meanders between acid, house, techno and more. the chords and arpeggios set the mood in life off measure where robotic elements rise to meet them, carving the way for result with its oscillating tones, clap fueled percussion and three-o-three licks. pull back is packed with a thunderous energy that s intertwined with sinfol s soulful vocals and ethereal synths, before swaying into deep house territory with exhale . the track s rolling bass, broken drums and twinkling melodies round off the latest instalment on the rising amsterdam label off in a graceful manner.

second transmission from distant worlds comes courtesy of derek carr (for those that knoe, where we met, why so series). his music has been turning heads since the turn of the millenium but only in the last few years has he been getting the recognition he deserves. his productions have a timeless, celestial quality and reward multiple listens, there is always a hint of subtle beauty about his work and this is no exception. scisor and wraith are built for the club whilst fading fast and sunrise in system will work equally well in a club or for home listening. more than a nod to detroit in these productions but all unmistakeably carr productions.
