kalbata joins perlon-contributor maayan nidam for a superbly ambidextrous ep on brush & broom. both are known to be highly versatile artists, and when joining forces in the studio the results are equally kaleidoscopic. the town is an instant club favorite featuring a hypnotic tone bouncing over a zappy electro beat with hints of old-school disco. chrome moon is a deep and dark techno voyage, with constant movements of metallic underlays and industrial overtones. more to come from this newly-formed duo so keep em peeled!
kalbata has turned his hand to many styles over the years, not least the excellent soundsystem explorations of congo beat the drum, but on this second release for his label brush & broom, he s decided to fling himself into the fiery pit of acid while paying tribute to 90s motocross bikes. honda is dripping with 303, punctuated by a twitchy set of drums, while yamaha takes a diversion into moodier territory, letting hazy chords set the tone for an energised but defiantly heads down acid workout. suzuki is a bit spicier, capturing the essence of up-for-it early trax records but edging it into more hypnotic, looped up territory. toyota finishes the ep off with an atonal bleep out with an electro undercarriage
fortuna records boss kalbata launches his new record label brush & broom with this impressive ep, featuring two acid-tinged african percussion excursions for the late hours. obskuur is a ritualistic percussion journey reminiscent of old-school warehouse days while rumoured is a high-tech conga roller layered on top of analog drum machines and an acidic bassline. crucial and limited!
the penultimate release on optimo trax (at least for now) comes from tel avivs mighty kalbata. i was already a big fan and was so delighted when he got in touch to see if i would be interested in releasing something by him. unusually for optimo trax this is one track in 3 versions but each version is so different that often i play them all in one dj set. originally there were two versions but as kalbata is a renowned master of dub (check out the documentary online about him recording in jamaica), i gently persuaded him to do a no-holds-barred dub mix too which appears here as enkuan pt 3. a few words about the record from kalbata i went to ethiopia in the beginning of 2017 to record musicians. the most memorable one was mulugeta teshome who plays the washint flute on this record. its a traditional ethiopian flute made out of wood, and mulugeta came to the studio carrying a whole bag of them, each one in a different key. we chose the scale and started the recording session. i ended up taking the tracks a lot further with the three cuts on the record but really it all started that day, in a small studio shack in addis ababa.
fortuna co-founder kalbata takes the controls for this new, middle eastern techno banger! al-shark is a banging arab farfisa excursion played frantically on an analog techno rhythm section. it s the first release from the fortuna camp which is not a reissue, but worry not, this could easily be an ancient lebanese proto-house experiment unearthed from a dusty reel.for the b-side kalbata takes things even further with a tribal relick of the original, placing us in a voodoo ceremony where ghosts of sinners come to dance. already on heavy rotation by gilles peterson and acid arab, this anthemic 12- is not to be missed! limited vinyl!
kalbata is a techno & 2-step producer who previously released on labels such as soul jazz, brownswood and greenmoney. kalbata did a string of high profile remixes for artists such as fat freddy s drop, spank rock, the count & sinden and roll deep, collaborated with warrior queen and is also the man behind reissue labels fortuna and spring hill records. mixmonster is the man behind funk band the apples as well as a member of cut-n-paste duo radiotrip.
deep dancehall dub bomb!
kalbatas new tune was recorded in kingston, jamaica, with two legendary jamaican mcs, jah thomas and little john, using live musicians and analog equipment. the result is a seriously heavyweight bass-heavy monster.
this is the latest project from 2-step/dubstep producer kalbata continuing on from his earlier cuts of tunes like courtney melodys >ninja mi ninja< and previous tracks on soul jazz with warrior queen and mc clapper priest. here he takes it to the next level with this heavyweight discomix 12 inch featuring two vocal tracks plus a killer dub. superb!

about a year ago four swiss brothers smashed it with a couple of eps featuring heavyweights sizzla, cutty ranks and underground legends oddatee and sensational. bbc1s host mary anne (we re missing you!) hobbs took notice and dropped the debut on her show - positioning talen amidst the cream of the bass scene. instead of basking in the limelight and peacefully riding out the wave, the duo holed up in the studio for another year to create an even thicker package - comic book is the end result! the ep features the vocal talent of lady saw, turbulence and ward 21. remix duty is handled by the bass mafia international: stereotyp, kalbata, robot koch, reverse engineering, son of kick, filewile, i-wolf and king aron.
the package covers the chew-your-bass-cabinets-off type of future dancehall, explores detail filled post step and of course touches on some sounds that are just impossible to categorize!
the vinyl includes all 3 talen originals and remixes by robot koch, son of kick and kalbata. the rest of the package is available only as download (included with vinyl 12 inch).
