where to now? records are proud to present beatrice dillons follow up release to the widely well received * blues dances*. this three track 12 inch sees beatrice step things up a gear in terms of intricacy, experimenting wildly to add to her already astute palette of timbre and rhythm. face a leads the record with the unmistakable skronk of saxophone cutting and jamming over the skeletal pulse of beatrices signature dubbed out techno landscape. initially the inclusion of saxophone acts as an aural abstraction or diversion to extract a little freedom from the pumping cavern of dark dub techno atmosphere punctuated with the mechanical juddering saw-bass, but as the piece develops and we become deep into the groove the inclusion of wild sax snorts trips us up and become the focus itself as new levels of complex melodic and rhythmic detail become apparent within this otherwise structurally obedient space. taking its cues from rabih beaini, miles davis * big fun* era, dresvn and keith hudson, undoubtably face a is a compelling, complex trip… heads down but arms flailing. face b continues the theme but takes the listener far deeper into the cavern. here the concern is more the effects of space within song, a moment where beatrice allows herself to move away from the floor to find a little more room for playful experimentation. the saxophone is further treated with a plethora of effects to compliment the array of dub signals that scatter and skip around the basin. the record closes with sonnier (walk in the light) which strangely somehow manages to feel jazzier in its components, even in comparison to a pair of tracks riffing on a manipulated free-jazz sax part. it sounds strangely unsure of its world, adding to this whole loosely slung, loping feel which somehow fits amongst the stern, brooding, and efficient synth play. beatrice masterfully manages to create a piece here that grows in intensity without ever increasing in pace or texture, every drop is intended to stir the listener a little more than the last. theres a sense throughout all the pieces of having rhythm imposed or even inflicted upon the listener but this is certainly not a conflict of ideas… there is optimism, harmony and above all - wild groove nestled within beatrices world of mutant shuffle.

great circles is pleased to present another artist from the philadelphia underground - m//r magnetic resonance. with this debut 12 inch, m//r brings a new dimension to the labels sonic story. on the a-side, adjacent possible is warehouse primed, with its massive kick, rotating squelches and infectious claps, while texas acid patiently seeks you out and finds you huddled in the darkest corner of the room, its delayed synths turning percussive and pattering your theta state like acid rain. on the b-side, honey single deftly weaves dub fragments and metallic webbing into a padded electro structure. panthers 1 slows the pace and opens the doors to a phantom voice and lush melodic strains that slowly merge into a unified ensemble over the extended, hypnotic beat.

after his highly acclaimed sunset in kreuzberg ep, dib001 shifts gears and goes straight into techno mode: constantine is a steady number, its acid bass line slugging around a dark lfo pulse and punching snares. piano chords slow down the pace here and there, adding a dreamy touch to the mood. on remix duties, idriss drafts in gaetano parisio, the godfather of the italian techno scene: his track has a more percussive feel, with a classy swinging rhythm that takes over the original groove.

the third release from wavefreform again comes to us from the east, and this time around it marks a reformation of sound for both the label and the artist. half of the long-running georgian duo greenbeam & leon, boyd schidt is a producer with over a decade of work already under his belt whose first releases emerged in 2007. as a solo artist, his career dates to 2010 with digital releases on georgia’s front rec, fvf records, and emote music, and a track on the new vinyl compilation from studio r°. with the hard, broken kick pattern, elevated tempo, and nods to electro, the a-side ‘phantom’, a collaboration with subex, is a change of pace for the artist and the hardest thing yet to emerge from wavereform. dubwise use of effects shows the same hands still at work, but the sound elements, granulated blasts of static and drop-based structure of the track hold strong parallels to the rejuvenated techno sound currently emerging from the uk. the b-side, ‘structure’, recalls the previous work of the artist: subtle, building dub techno rich in detail and with the dancefloor firmly in mind. there is clear experience at work here with his deliberate deployment and manipulation of elements as the track struts along while enveloping the listener in its smaller details. as it pauses and takes an extended breakdown, the details rush forwards, but it finds renewed force to power itself to the close. coming in this case from an established producer with a long history, this kind of control is not surprising, but it is more indication of the riches of the east that have yet to be discovered by audiences worldwide.

ronald burrell s reputation as deep house royalty has long been solidified throughout the years having released on many legendary labels since the late 80 s including nervous, nu-groove, strictly rhythm & many more. working both solo and alongside his brother rheji his output has always caught the interest and ears of dance music aficionados world-wide with a heady mixture of gospel, soul / r&b, jazz, & garage heavily informing his sound. surprising as it is, -it s a boy- was never released, only ever existing as a test pressing! the 4 track ep takes in all the musical influences listed above and flips them into some seriously deep territory. opener -journey- is an epic jam punctuated by an 808 cowbell, beautiful pads, strings and ronald s voice asking us to join him on a journey through our own minds. second cut -feelin jazzy- picks up the pace a little, a stripped back rhythm blessed with some choice, chopped up jazz samples and vocal stabs keeps things moving in the right direction. over on side-b we are treated to the deepest groove of -bedtime story-, which has all the trademarks of a classic burrell production, soulful vocals, melodies and crisp drum programming. closing track -the crib- rounds things with off with a stomping church inspired organ groove, an up-lifting end to the ep. as mentioned above, this is the very first time this underground house classic has ever been released! this record is a real collectors piece and has commanded collectors prices on-line in the past, a real rarity. it has been re-mastered and re-pressed in conjunction with ronald burrell from his original dat tapes and all original label artwork has been preserved.

anthony collins and francis harris keep up the creative pace of their frank & tony project following the recent sprinkles collaboration, and once again a fine selection of tracks from their lp are on offer for deeper, more leftfield kinds of house record bags.love brut is an uneasy burner that uses a minimal amount of elements to create intensity, proving that simplicity is very often the key. the dub mix of resistance is exclusive to the vinyl, and it too keeps a stripped attitude in place with its plain and simple drums peppered with poised melodic content. villa seurat has a fuller range of percussion at work but there are no more fireworks to be found here than there are elsewhere on the ep, appealing to a more subtle kind of taste

always at the top of their game, hot creations this time call upon torontos nathan barato for the next release on the label. the unique and fresh sounding *everytime i see you* is a real groover with a low slung bassline creating deep swing and flow with the vocals from room 303 taking it to the next level. brazilian volkoder is first to remix, picking up the pace for the dance floor he adds a new killer bassline, stripping down the vocal but holding onto the groove. last up drumcode favourite nicole moudaber brings her techno touch to the release with her remix making this a wholly satisfying package indeed.

as the autumnal nights draw in, futureboogie show off a slightly darker edge to their ever expanding roster of artists, welcoming re-edit king mark e to the fold. the birmingham based dj and producer has risen steadily through the musical ranks over the last few years, cropping up on a multitude of top drawer labels like sonar kollectiv, running back, golf channel, his own merc imprint, and most recently a brace of albums for the us label spectral sound (home to matthew dear, osborne et al). title track, *activity* chugs at a house music pace but with plenty of techno swagger, bridging the gap between the two genres with ease. a simple and minimal beat is doused in a pacey acid bassline riff that is constantly morphing and transposing, layers of synths join in the infectious melody whilst soaring pads rise up with all the familiarity of a detroit techno classic.
