zone records welcome a real legend in the form of cardopusher for their next ep, a five track affair that is arresting from the off. venezuelan born cardopusher is now based in barcelona and co-founded the classicworks label. his diverse and experimental sound takes him from techno to electro to acid to rave to house, all with his own singular perspective. always fusing ideas with great skill on labels like super rhythm trax, zodiac 44 and bnr, he now comes correct for zone. kicking things off is the raw and raucous ‘nothing left to believe in.’ it is a macho tune with fractured vocals, wild synths and slap funk drums all sounding industrial and tortured. then comes blast cut, a more dynamic and stripped back electro groove with a corrugated bassline and metallic synth stabs all sounding informed by the past but looking to a distant future.

house music maestro louie vega returns to nurvous to remix disco hit ‘up jumped the devil’ by john davis & the monster orchestra. originally released in 1977 on sam records, ‘up jumped the devil’ featured music performances from some of philly’s finest musicians, many of whom also featured on albums by the salsoul orchestra. among them were michael “sugar bear” foreman on bass, drummer charles collins and guitarist dennis harris. percussion came from larry washington, whilst don renaldo provided the strings and horns. with a rugged and rough rhythm section and blazing horn parts, the track was an absolute bomb amongst disco djs at the time and continues to shine as a gem today.

jaxx madicine is a jazz-funk inspired house ish outfit from milan consisting of turbojazz (local talk, gamm records), parker madicine (heist, bastard jazz brooklyn, ct-hi records) and the talented jazz keyboardist veez_0 . with an organic and melodic sound collage you can hear influences from classic 70 s jazz-funk labels and artists like cti, mizell brothers, kudu and bob james but also the current sounds of kaidi tatham, byron the aquarius and harvey sutherland. on this their first ep you get three amazing tracks that all are made with a genuine love for analogue synthesizers, fender rhodes, clavinets and some soulful mpc programming...
since the beginning we can see an evolution in jose ricos music. his sound is now more powerful than ever and the structure of his tracks have gained in complexity. the rhythms of his tracks, highly influenced by chicago house and detroit in his earlier releases, now are looking at the european 90 s electronica and dub music, slowing down (even more) the tempo. we can say that the his last releases on into the the deep and off minor are probably his best works and most mature, so far. dé,,jà,, vu, the 11th downbeat installment, continues to explore this route. here we find four emotional and spacey tracks, made by old synths and samplers which takes us back to the early 90 s.
