falk records will be releasing spaces from icelandic experimental producer aaiieenn this august. aaiieenn is the solo project of electronic musician hallmar gauti halldórsson. halldórsson first came to music though being a mover and shaker in icelands punk and hardcore scene where he was the harsh noise guy with local band distill the world. with aaiieenn however, halldórsson moved away from the guitars and screaming to a fully electronic world of experimental synth music and gorging on the mathematical possibilities and expanses of arpeggio/sequencer driven ambient music. calab-yau and continuous property 1 drip shards of pure crystalline sound into deep crevasses as harmonic droplets ping of gleaming surfaces coated with spongiform bass. the light and effervescent euclidean evokes classic ambient works aphex twin, while manifold is more direct with a muscular and sturdy bassline. spaces closes with the fluttering and lush ambient sounds of zariksi that are carried into the skies by a pulsing and gliding techno beat.

hulled is a 25 minute journey spread across 4 tracks of glacial abandon. all tracks were recorded directly to tape with no overdubs, made at converses home studio. bill says these tracks represent ocean waves in stormy conditions, dark grey blue water, or more generally speaking something ominous and beautiful. the songs on this album reveal a sublime influence from detroit techno, idm, and acid. built around vintage synthesizer lines and gritty drum machine percussion, the tracks ebb and flow like the effect of sun shimmering on water, woozy, gauzy and ephemeral. all songs were mastered for vinyl by george horn at fantasy studios in berkeley. each ep is housed in a die-cute jacket designed by eloise leigh with peachy pink patterns landing on an alien water planet and seeing mysterious playing forms under the turquoise water. and the. each copy includes a postcard featuring photo of bill with notes.

hot shots of reggae is an recording on which a bunch of popular reggae songs are brought together. the album was originally released in the autumn of 1970 and compiled by the legendary chinese-jamaican producer leslie kong. he had enjoyed many hits in in europe and selected some of the true pearls from the reggae music to shine on the album. the album includes the maytals hit monkey man, the sparkling so much love by joe white and the fine rythms of ken boothes freedom street. the influential producer leslie kong once discovered jimmy cliff and recorded him on his own record label beverleys. in 1962 he recorded bob marleys first single and through the 60s het became known as the producer of many big artists, like desmond dekker and joe higgs. he died of a heart attack, at the age of 38, in august 1971.

the jamaican sonia pottinger was once called the most important jamaican woman involved in music business. dancing down orange street is a collection of some of her famous productions for different artists. the album captures the moment when rocksteady transformed into reggae by speeding up a little and moving towards a more jerky and less smooth musical palette. famous singers as delano stewart and ken boothe are present on the album with multiple tracks. the vocal trio the melodians (known for their hit rivers of babylon) provide a couple of beautifull songs. even after all those years (released for the first time in 1969) the compilation remains a treasure of showcasing some of the finest songs produced by sonia. sonia pottinger was married to music producer lyndon pottinger and started to record musicians in 1996. during the late 60s she produced songs for joe white, the melodians and toots & the maytals.

a much in demand reissue of two of nyc born-and-bred, pal joeys, classics from his joint label with reynald deschamps, loop dloop. first up, party time which harnesses that 90s nyc underground house energy with a rawness that was to emanate through many of pal joeys subsequent productions. scalpel in hand, joey expertly crafted this sample laden groover, his trademark stuttering, off-kilter rhythms, loops and fills keeping listeners on their toes throughout, never knowing how the next phrase might unfold. on the flip, raw love utilises a seminal disco classic as its main sample source, looping it in a way only pal joeys mind knows how, adding percussive hits and extra effects to create an innovative, animated and exhilaratingly rhythmic dancefloor bomb. both tracks are perfect examples of the simplicity and seeming effortlessness that pal joey maintains in his productions, adhering to the mantra that less is more but with a resonating rawness that touches deep down in the soul.

heat in two belgian flavors! check out the zaïrian electronic dance floor banger nakombe nga by les choc stars. comes with the dope, largely unheard belgium new beat version on the flip from the teknokrat s. both tracks were originally released in 1989 and this is the first time they appear together on 12-. reissue co-curated with renowned record fiend john gomez. the music on this winning double-sider was written by tony baron and gery françois, two belgian producers that were involved in several musical projects on the new beat scene in the 1980s. they worked under many aliases and recorded the teknokrats haunting what did she say? at the famous studio madeleine in brussels in 1989. prompted by jean martin from espera records, baron adapted the music into a further two songs to be released that year, virginitys melancholic the key, and the surprising but ear catching collaboration with the labels soukous stars, ben nyamabos les choc stars du zaire. it is still a mystery how the seeds were planted for the one-off pairing that culminated in the electronic soukous bomb nakombe nga. what is certain is that it is set to light up dancefloors worldwide.
