mr. k returns to the 12inch format for the latest in his series of edits for most excellent unlimited, making the most of the long-playing wax with two contrasting cuts. first up is ike strongs boogie land, an obscure side that was originally released in 1981 and saw plenty of action at the paradise garage. krivit s edit is inspired by larry levan s technique in running the tune, focusing as larry did on the late-song breakdown before dropping into a stripped-down rendition of the undulating main groove, a boogie bomb to be sure! don t let the name fool you the enigmatic boogie man orchestra, stars of the flip side, are all about disco. the instrumental lady, lady, lady first appeared in dj sets in the summer of 75, the prime breakout year for disco, making its way from chicago all the way to clubs on both coasts despite having no national distribution. pre-dating the introduction of the 12-inch single, the song never saw release on the larger format, until now. krivit s edit takes advantage of the extended playing time by easing into the philly-style orchestral groove and letting it breath for a dramatic, building dancefloor moment.

no matter where the winds may blow, what storms may come or what pirates will do, the transatlantyk ship is still sailing. navigated for the last three years by zambon out of berlin, ultimately avoiding the shallow waters of the generic and constantly patrolling the seas in search of exciting sounds. after all that sailing the label just had to replenish its ranks with some fresh faces - those still capable of voyaging into the unknown. joining the crew is a young gun tamten, who by day serves as a vinyl pusher in warsaw s finest side one record store. what he does by night is not the matter of this short text, but we are sure he does a lot of it. hence his love for all things distant - from subaquatic pads and floating riffs, to new-age-y siren voices, otherworldly effects and percussion drenched in reverb. there is a lot of similarly distant, sun-bleached material on this five tracker, full of a druggy and hippy balearic feel. beautiful ambient jam przebudzenie is the stand out track, but znaki czasu is equally as good with its simple, yet memorable melody, reminding of dawns and sunsets on some god forsaken beach. sultry deepness of nieznajoma is followed by enchanting digital exotica of wyrocznia and wavey trip-hop cut po burzy . overall its one of the strongest eps that transatlantyk managed to co-opt into its growing catalogue. definitely one for the dreamers.

coming hot off his rather expansive cognitive dissonance 2x12inch for love notes, and also an ep for axetrax, tape_hiss herein continues his impressive run. on jacob s ladder, the artist pushes his emotionally wrought sound over cooking percussion and bubbling acid undertones. maspeth ave is quite honestly the nastiest bassline we have heard on a deep house track in some time, sure to cause spontaneous bass face in the listener. life as an echo uses soaring chords and synths to prove its point, and forests of my mind finishes the ep off with a pitch bending chord that pushes the track right along. yet another extremely cohesive, emotionally charged effort from this artist.

hot on the heels of the smash release from superlover, mother recordings welcome back simion to the label with his the rhythm ep. simion presents two cuts of upfront house music that are prime for the dancefloor. first up is title-track, the rhythm , a nod to the 90s chicago sound with jacking drums and a sensual female vocal. backed up by a funk-fuelled bassline and a lush piano breakdown that lead into a deep house groove. the b-side feeling good is true to its title. tight percussion, chopped vocals and a catchy synth line all come together in a fluttering climax. this one is sure to leave any dancefloor shaking.

londons chocky joins the dessous recordings label and shares four tracks of sublime house music on steve bugs imprint. self knowledge is a deep, techy roller clocking it at nearly 10 mins plenty of space to expand into its full potential the groove grows ever more hypnotic and engaging as the track unfolds. next up is �a reefa - a non too subtle reference to a certain herb that might have inspired this loose yet highly funky deep house jam. casa de estrela changes the vibe up with a more direct and jacking track even though it would work at prime time, chockys feel for space and drama make sure the track will be heard in many diverse surrounding and sets this year.

repress , swedish disco aficionado drop out orchestra has been plying his trade in the world of slick edits and on-point party fodder for the best part of ten years now, and now he comes to riot gear with a sure fire club classic to share. there s no prizes for guessing the source material on -holding on-, but in this context the evergreen crossover jam gets a modern steroid injection, having never sounded more contemporary than here. yam who? sidles in for a remix that does a subtle job, simmering down some of the familiar vocals and making a slinkier cut that still hits hard. -knucklehead- brings a little more jacking drum machine action to the table, but still disco is the main order of the day, while -where is my man- takes the prize with its on point jazz funk licks and stomping beat.

a software engineer at ableton by day, sieren�s love for uk influenced bass music and field recording and experimental soundscaping resulted in his apollo debut �static polymorphism� a masterly ep of spaced out street-rave soul.

does the world need more acid? yes it does! the r-a-g trio aka dutch producers ma spaventi, g-string & aroy dee deliver three raw acid-jams with aroy on the couch working the mic. the lyrics of dreadfully nervous are based on a edgar allan poe story. . dreadfully nervous (aryd s acid mix) is a gurgling brew of squelchy acid with dark vocals and pinging cowbells pulling you in all directions. coarse claps and ever more wild synths encourage you to cut loose and make for another timeless cut. dreadfully stoned is more stripped back, with a rubbery arpeggiated synth the main hook over subtle, supple drums. those dark spoken word vocals are back again and the whole thing is freaky and unsettling as a result. last of all is the bright and glistening no soul with metal hits and claps and prickly acid all bursting out of dusty chicago drums. it s raw and sure to fire the synapses just like r-a-g productions always do.

jeph1 uses hand-made spring reverb devices, east african traditional instruments, tube delays and field recordings all amalgamated in order to create a piece of music that pays tribute to the principles of uk sound system culture.

new leipzig label kontra s inaugural record presents a richly diverse collection of music that spans from world music infused house in the vein of many sex tags releases to break ridden, hard hitting, low-fi techno through to considered ambient music. despite the variation kontra is held together by a unifying underground style that every track shares. an excellent first release from a label that s sure to become a major underground player.

does the world need more acid? yes it does! the r-a-g trio aka dutch producers ma spaventi, g-string & aroy dee deliver three raw acid-jams with aroy on the couch working the mic. the lyrics of dreadfully nervous are based on a edgar allan poe story. dreadfully nervous (aryd s acid mix) is a gurgling brew of squelchy acid with dark vocals and pinging cowbells pulling you in all directions. coarse claps and ever more wild synths encourage you to cut loose and make for another timeless cut. dreadfully stoned is more stripped back, with a rubbery arpeggiated synth the main hook over subtle, supple drums. those dark spoken word vocals are back again and the whole thing is freaky and unsettling as a result. last of all is the bright and glistening no soul with metal hits and claps and prickly acid all bursting out of dusty chicago drums. it s raw and sure to fire the synapses just like r-a-g productions always do.

lady chann & rapha team up for �hard drive�� the uk�s �number one dancehall queen� returns with a storming carnival heater called �hard drive�. �back it up, hard drive� is the command from the lady on this minimal dancehall rhythm, which packs in solid sub-bass, a bark, and some well-placed/spaced-out percussion. the producer is the bern, switzerland born and raised raphaël �rapha� gasser, who became hooked on dancehall after hearing a mixtape by berlin-based supersonic sound and has gone on to collaborate with the genre mainstays like i-octane, sheba, kiprich and more. on the flip b-side is the remix by newark-based jersey club original r3ll, upping the bpm and sure to keep forward thinking dance-floors bubbling. kick n clap is the record label founded by django django�s dave maclean.

invisible starlight is a ripping tune by an unknown midwestern funk outfit with a driving backbeat and soaring horns. it sounds like ohio to us, but we can t be certain. however, we are sure that this band must have rocked local bowling alleys and lounges wherever they went. universal cave is proud to present our edit to our fellow 45 loving movers and groovers. on the flip, the beat broker rounds out the original with his signature style and an impeccable ear. the kind dub s sun drenched delay and reinforced drums ensure that invisible starlight will shine on any dancefloor.

cult duo rework are next up on my favorite robot with a five track ep that shows off their brilliantly inventive house and tech style. the production outfit of daniel varga, michael kuebler deal in left of centre and freaky house with a mischievous afterparty slant. they have been active for more than a decade now and have credits on great labels like visionquest, items & things, meant and the institution that is playhouse. the brilliantly sleazy �talk it off� opens things up with popping drums, playful lyrics and a steely sound that is designed for wonky basement parties. �valencia� goes deeper with warm drums and synths surging along next to an elastic groove that is propped up by energetic and incendiary chord stabs. it�s a subtle but high impact track that will raise the energy levels on any floor. �think about you� has vocals coated in echo and delay and trippy synths that are lively and off kilter. it makes for a track that is brilliantly loose and undulating and cannot fail to get under your skin. final track �attractive� heads in a much more techno direction with surging drums and hypnotic slithering synths that burrow deep into your brain and seep into the night. it is trance inducing for sure, and shows another side to this accomplished outfit. this is a versatile ep stuffed with killer cuts for many different moments in the night, and each is as standout as the next.

this is my best album for sure, says todd. we cant be exactly sure on that one, all three albums from todd bodine have been great. forms however, is perhaps the most complex and mature album that the berlin producer and dj has accomplished to date. and its also out with us! todd has worked at full speed over the last six months to bring us this fine piece of work. as a dj playing around the world and as a producer in the highest ranks of consistency, todd bodine has constantly developed as an artist. releases and remixes on respected labels, and collaborations with various artists have made him an internationally popular electronic musician. in 2007 he finally began to perform as a live act, and what club would better fit todds new live premiere than the panorama bar in berlin!? todd shows with forms, his innate knowledge of the two sides of electronic dance music. this is a meeting of peaktime euphoria with the relaxing bliss of the hazy morning light. a meeting of hypnotic natural rhythms and driving cut-up sounds. todd can impress you with dancefloor bombs and also with his sophisticated sound visions. the sound of detroit would probably be the best comparison.
