phonokemi are one of the most exciting electronic musical exports that denmark has to offer. and that means really a lot, if we think that since many years now a very innovative and exellent techno music scene is growing up in our neighbour country. it is also no wonder that the duo regularly provides berlin label highgrade records with some of our most exciting new releases. the pair has repeatedly demonstrated that the combination of an experienced producer (jacob phono thiessen) and a first rate dj (kim kemi) is a winning combination that ensures the production of intelligent tracks that always make more than their share of revolutions on the worlds turntables. this latest ep is no an exception.

dachshund is a living example of a musician who doesnt take himself too seriously: his lively productions, where his passion for experimentation in rhythm and sound are clearly evident, stand out as a welcome departure from the sterile work of so many other heads in the scene. besides humor, an easy-going jamaican feeling characterizes his sets and tracks: the swiss dj, producer and label owner has his musical roots in reggae, which he has followed all the way to the sunny caribbean. no wonder then, that we can hear the dub influence in his current musical output. true to form, dachshund presents his latest release on the berlin record label, highgrade records, where the beats will blister through the speakers in unexpected combinations and grooves. around every corner there seems to lurk a new mad idea or sound sequence from dachshund, who leads his listeners equally as he misleads them on the dancefloor. with a sly musical wink, he offers us three tracks >shall we<, >soul free< and >tell me< produced with sophistication and elegance. these tunes switch almost imperceptibly into a grooving mind-trip that perfectly fits the title of the ep. this is the equivalent of a relaxing invitation to dance: >shall we<? … but, of course!

daniel dreier has been one of the most active members of the berlin techno scene for over 10 years. as a resident dj at clubs like watergate & panorama bar has has created his own wobbly minimal funk and delivers beats that keep the dancefloor in a state of jiggling suspense. as a producer he has made his name synonymous with highgrade as a core member of the labels family. it comes as quite a surprise when he says: >when i was young, i had absolutely no interest in music - i just felt like i was missing it.< but that sentiment has clearly changed. in the early 90s dreier began recording songs form the radio and mixing them with the help of a double cassette deck. his hip-hop mix tapes from this period made their way all around the former west berlin. fortunately for all techno fans, a visit to the legendary bunker club gave his musical taste a new direction. daniel dreier dived into the depths of electronic sound, and by the end of the 90s was playing his first dj gigs at berlin fashion shows. from then on its been an upward journey, whether on radio, at festivals or in clubs all over europe. his success has surely come from the very special dreier sound that has always stayed fresh, deep and energetic. little wonder then, that this latest highgrade release, featuring the tracks black madonna, last dinner and angeldust, is a record that moves your hips from the very first beat.

mikael the skull stavöstrand is one of the better known artists in the swedish techno scene. deconstructed sounds, experimental tones and minimal changes are the base of his comprehensive works

the spaniard manuel fernandez llorente had a classical musical upbringing, studying at the music conservatorium in madrid. he has been composing and producing electronic music since 1996, not only releasing on his own label >7noise< but more importantly also being licensed for various major compilations. now he is releasing his first tracks on highgrade records. at first, >addiction< unspectacularly plods on towards house heaven, but then the sparse vocals and timeless organ sounds give you a warm and soft electro shock. the first track on the b side >the gull< shows off prompts talents as a composer. a very discreet melody blankets the straight beat, taking away the coldness of the bass. a beautiful dream track that should never really end. >mechanic< brings it home and is right in your face, a journey into minimal techno country, where you meet the sound ghosts that prompt has summoned. a single drum beat here, a voice there and a now and again a sound shred that are all meticulously arranged to make the perfect atmosphere.

andromat 3000, aka dj mahatma makes a thrilling return on highgrade 72. this is a release featuring three great tracks, with real hit potential. >beatroot< opens the show with a classic aural landscape and a secure sense of style. >brique< weaves its intoxicating rhythmical magic into indio- eastern vocals which make the atmosphere impossible to escape. and >cheepnis< is the offspring of funk. wide basses meet a chic disco fanfare sample for maximum effect

here comes a highgrade split ep. marcus homm and ludwig coenen share the honours on one record, and instead of competing for the glory, both producers compliment each other perfectly. markus homm, the global player, starts off as assured as ever with another great track. golden glow rolls towards a dramatic stage for hysteria. homm takes the listener in with a heavy and richly sweet narrative style. matches brings even more excitement, pushing forward with brilliantly entangled sounds that hit you more in the hips than the stomach, telling a tale of promise in the early morning hours. ludwig coenen, the man from infamous frankfurt, brings dancing into the realms of the zoo! with its not a zoo he manages to combine various sounds into a funky and functional harmony. the 2nd track mind your head breaks the standard mould and uses a broad sound palette to construct a new and unique field of maximum funk.

all the way from new zealand to the urban landscapes of berlin, simon beeston is a man who likes diversity. this is not just evident in his choice of residence, but also in his musical output. following an ep on highgrade digital and a track on our various artists vol. vi record, simon now presents dusty back room, his first solo 12inch release on highgrade. the ep opens with the title track dusty back room, a track of strings and stabs, and a sound not exactly typical of previous highgrade releases. but when the music comes with such compelling energy and provocative atmosphere, were prepared to make an exception. new zealand meets berlin as we cast an eye over green landscapes and ocean swells, while the bumpy groove intoxicicates us with its magic spell. that simon beeston is a man of great contrast is clearly evident on the b-side with neon cringe and cymbolic. the percussive heat of the club brings us back from the organic landscape of his homeland and into the neon lights of the night. neon cringe resonates with a healthy dose of acid pump, while cymbolic provides a bass driven journey complete with cut up vocals and blistering cymbal rolls. this is a release that richly deserves its round number: highgrade number 70. especially with the addition of the bonus digital track tough luck, another highlight all of its own.

eijajei - aye ya yay! this is a hit record! but what else would you expect when two of berlins hottest dj and producers, guido schneider and jens bond, are working together!? following the duos major success on pokerflat in 2004, we have managed to get the two of them back together for this exclusive release on highgrade. the results are well worth it. >getting sleepy< pulls us comfortably into the musical world of jens bond and guido schneider. without being obvious, and certainly not lazy, the track reclines into a laid back groove that hooks straight into the rhythm, creating a perfect atmosphere for the psychedelic vocals and hypnotic groove. you wont be able to escape the mood, making this the perfect techno weapon for the late night hours. we like! >eijeijei< is the highlight of the record: warm drums, siren like vocals, the whole thing seems to come from a long way away with incredibly smooth beats which make this track so special. maybe this is the sound of a table dance bar in the jungle? its incredibly sexy in any case

with this new ep tom clark makes an impressive return to the highgrade release program. following a collaboration with marcus schatz and most recently with benno blome, he now comes back as a solo artist. after only a few beats, you’ll be sure to recognise his signature sound. tom needs surprisingly few elements to build a unique atmosphere and his matchless grooves. on the title track “scorpio“ we find a deep, rolling bassline and a slightly orientally influenced vocal, combined with the typically unique clarkish synth leads, and we’re ready to go. it’s a track that continually keeps the excitement moving while never letting the cat out of the bag, and more than deserves the a-side. then we come to “albino“, also featuring sparkling synths and rolling drums that create an impression of fluidity and an unhurried beginnings, but we also end up in a waterfall… who would have known!? in conclusion comes “sand flea“, as lively as a box of fleas, but not nearly as aggrivating! mister clark is again at his best, with a love for detail, an innate sence for strange sounds and an a significant quantity of leisurely energy, this tune also really hits the mark. this is not the work of a newbie who produces an aggressive sound to prove his talents. the result is the feature of this ep: seldom has an understatement sounded so fresh. + digital-only bonus track “12 notes“!

raise the curtain once more on a very special orchestral performance. how could highgrade records better celebrate its 100th release than with twelve tracks from the highgrade disharmonic orchestra? the creative combo featuring both label bosses tom clark and todd bodine, alongside philip bader, daniel dreier and dale, began over a year ago with the intention of celebrating the tenth birthday of the berlin label. and the resulting gift: a musical experiment. the five artists have bundled their creativity together into a symphony unparalleled in the techno scene. every performance is like a jam session: all five laptops are interconnected, so each of the artists has the opportunity to react to the others and modify each track as desired. thus, new arrangements are created and constantly re-interpreted. drum machines and synthesizers are also in play, to further stretch the improvisational possibilities. no wonder then, that the 100th release follows in this creative vein. the highgrade disharmonic orchestra, with multilayer, kiddnaps us away into vastly different musical worlds: from deep influences and custom recorded vocals to an array of technoid sounds and effects. then back to groovy, swinging beats reminiscent of a balmy summer evening on the beach. therefore the record is something of a rollercoaster ride, where we never know what might be waiting behind the next curve. typically highgrade

this is my best album for sure, says todd. we cant be exactly sure on that one, all three albums from todd bodine have been great. forms however, is perhaps the most complex and mature album that the berlin producer and dj has accomplished to date. and its also out with us! todd has worked at full speed over the last six months to bring us this fine piece of work.
