the next modern hypnosis sees the first official vinyl release from another channel. the young german producer jonas schachners (another channel) has been at the fore front of the new wave of ‘dub techno’ that has been lurking in the underground over the last few years. his dubbed out analog sound has left some accrediting his productions as ‘picking up where rhythm & sound left off’. his debut 12” gives us two very unique tracks. the a side ‘lord 35’ is an energetic synth driven tune which sitting at 135bpm, in a two-step style is made for the dance. the b side ‘corruption’ sees an international connection with the original composition created in germany by another channel, then the overdubbing of vocals supplied by ethiopian vocalist enushu taye (the black jesus experience) in her native amharic, recorded and mixed by mystik in his melbourne studio. the warm analog stabs and punchy bassline accompanied with enushu taye’s haunting vocals makes for a beautiful piece of music.

bugs is aus label owner will sauls first solo ep in over 4 years and follows his inaugural release on new aus compilation series, inside out. heres will on the a side. bugs is inspired as much by dancing at plastic people/co-op to the bugz in the attic as is it is by carl craigs innerzone orchestra track bugs in the bass bin. hopefully i bring my own twist to these key influences. the map room tumbles with big, swinging drums as a fervid sense of tension burns throughout before matt karmill takes bugs off on a linear dubbed out excursion to complete the package.

dop is welcomed back on circus company with a three track heater of an ep with a night in sausalito, and there is no way of taming this one. this time, the trio get slapped on wax with a 12inch that is pitted straight for the dancefloor. deetron comes through with some classy dub work on the remix. kicking things off with their headline track, a night in sausalito, the trio combine their signature and intricate synth work with a mixture of lo-fi hums and percussive flares until jaw fills the mix and takes the track away. rolling on a2 with ischia, the trio drop a straight up meaty drum pattern with a haunting range of vocal licks and delicate synth grooves. on the flipside, deetron strips back the vocals and lays a solid housey dub that purs, intensifies and releases in all the right places.

!k7 are pleased to announce forest swords as the next curator of the ever essential dj-kicks series. following acclaimed albums on ninja tune and tri angle, soundtrack and installation work, and remixes of the likes of bjork, matthew barnes aka forest swords has curated a 25-track compilation that draws a line between past inspirations and his current peers. like much of his own output, his dj-kicks skirts around pristine electronics and embraces more organic textures: 80s post punk (anna domino, dead can dance), classic 90s british electronica (orbital, mira calix), and smokey digi-dub (rhythm & sound), all rub up alongside some of the most forward-facing producers working today (demdike stare, laurel halo, fis). the compilation sifts through rhythms, shifting speeds and emotions: from pop icon neneh cherrys primal thudding to the zombified throb of exclusive forest swords track crow via deena abdelwaheeds clattering deconstructions to the euphoric two-step of djrum. its a collection of tracks that feels as restlessly curious and weighty as barnes own work. the double vinyl release includes a download code.

joseph white aka joe white is a foundation of jamaican music. he started singing in the late 50 s and did his first recordings for duke reid in the early 60 s. joe white formed the group roots, trunks & branches to release several tracks on the label splendour heights. “forward to zion” was released in 1979 and became a truly reggae roots stepper banger for sound system across the globe. probably electronic music fans will appreciate the futuristic dubwise. “forward to zion” is a song of peace, love, freedom and emancipation of people. uplift your selection, listen to the words of the prophet, it s time for us to get together, we are going forward to zion. jah don t care whether you are a natty dread or you re a baldhead, just as long as we unite and stop the fight, we are going forward to zion!

2018 repress - bicep make their way home to feel my bicep records for their first 12” on the imprint since their collaborative ‘dahlia’, recorded with hammer, back in september of 2015. fmb006 is a notable addition to the label - a reimagining of blaze’s seminal recording ‘lovelee dae’ - originally released on classic back in 1997, before a string of subsequent re-issues and remix packages on playhouse, true and urban tracks that included carl craig and 20:20 vision. the remix was originally designed to be included in their essential mix in 2014, but a lack of space has meant that its pressing on fmb is the first time it sees the light of day. using ralph lawson and carl finlow’s classic aforementioned acapella version as the basis of their work, the bicep lads ensnare an air of swooning euphoria in their remix that stays true to both their original productions and their dj sets. shortened vocals suffuse galloping 909s and a gleaming synth riff that certify it as a festival fail safe

bruno patchworks hovart is one of the top producers of todays groove music scene. after playing as a bassist and guitarist for various bands, he started producing in the mid-nineties and has kept on mixing todays technologies with the raw spirits of house, electronic, disco, funk, soul, reggae & jazz musics golden years since then. following the trail of success left by his various projects as patchworks, and under many aliases, hes proved his musical ubiquity and unexpectedly stroke in various genres. today, hes back under the edr records umbrella, following up to his various ep for the label, and meanwhile pursuing a comeback to his early love for house music. many house music diggers would indeed remember that before favorite recordings was launched in 2006, patchworks and pascal rioux produced many deep-house tracks on the rotax disques imprint. besides since the late 90s, patchworks has also collaborated with labels such as q-tape, or still music, delivering many clubbing hits such as million toes, sugar, or minautor. on this 5 tracks ep, he delivers 4 killer tunes again, inspired by the michael jackson’s classic hit, rock with you.

it s the fourth go round for monsieur blue, who steps back up to the plate with another three surefire jams from the slinkier side of the minimal house spectrum. -track 1- is an exquisite trip through blue-hued keys and shuffling drums, striking a fine balance between the lounge and the dancefloor. -track 2- takes a moodier approach, eking out mysterious chords and injecting a little juice into the low end to suit a more rugged situation, and then -track 3- jettisons the ballast and pings off into a dubbed out sphere of house music perfectly crafted for the times you want to get lost at sea.

julian sanza and andre espeut, are two very familiar names in the scene. julian, who hails from argentinian/cuban roots and andre with his french/caribbean heritage, come together to merge electronic dance, modern funk, soul and boogie, creating their own unique melting pot of goodness! there s something distinctly anthemic about perfect system . low slung, synthed up funk, with a house tinge driven by those sweet soulful vocal harmonies - sure to get stuck in your head for days. opolopo opens up the e.p. adding his trademark disco remix magic touch to the original - upping the tempo, laying a shuffling beat behind, pumping up the bassline and getting spiritual on the keys. on the flip the situation remix channels the inner improv funk, keeping the vocals to choice snippets before the sare havlicek dub rounds the e.p. off reworking the bass synth to the point where it exudes the sleaze. this is the first in a series of collaborations between these two… keep those eyes peeled!

drum union is a new series documenting the different shades of leftfield house. london based tony nwachukwu (aka attica blues aka wah-chu-ku) provides a deep broken dub techno monster. manuel fischer presents a beat-driven disco-influenced track to make any dance-floor burn and mitsubishi galaxy, who are also known as jack pattern take us into a wavy trip to another dimension. look like rounds it up and is merging afro-cuban rhythms with modern electronica soundshapes. a journey wider and deeper than most of the average 4/4 business!

next up on baum is no other than mike schommer of deepchord fame who is back after a 15 year break, with a three track ep. his first release after his break was out on steve o sullivans mosaic records, and now his second one is released on baum records. mike s sound does not need any introduction, the music speaks for it self, but one thing to say, dub techno does not get any better than this!

amsterdam-based artist and format-label honcho juan sanchez himself delivers a quartet of tracks carrying his signature sound for the label’s thirteenth release. never one to settle for the ordinary, juan sanchez’ latest outing follows a more conceptual approach to techno. each track adds its own flavor to the mix, with the ep as a whole being a combination of dubby and dancefloor-fused material. synth and bass arps, stripped grooves and driving drums are the main ingredients of juan’s sound, all of which come together across this ep’s four-track canvas. the result is a balanced mix of both dubby and dancefloor-tinged techno laced with experimental twists and turns. with his new release, juan adds another quality slice of techno to the format roster.

assertiveness can be virtue. hence, boss moves - luca lozanos debut for running back - is aptly titled. generously spread over two vinyl plates, lozano investigates the hybrid sound that once was embodied by groups like future sound of london, labels like guerilla and djs such as sasha or dave angel. blessed with the production of skills of today, the eyes of a tailor and the chemoreceptors of a perfumer, the klasse wrecks and grafiti tapes man delivers nine tracks that do it all: tribal, trance, breakbeats, house, 303s, bleeps, rave, dubby deepness and pianos. like a trip down the 3d-visual-kaleidoscopic-artwork* hole or a snake charmer without a flute. intake as a whole, record it to your tape desk and feel like tuning into on a pirate station in ‘95. happiness is just around the bend. *none of that can be found here. see explosive black-and-white sleeve for further reference.

‘family horror x good times’ is an extensive 15 tracks compilation, where the leipzig label reflects on an intense and impassioned decade. kann asked close friends and long time idols to play their part to the full to complete the third edition of the label’s family horror compilation series. the outcome is a clear snapshot of the musical inclinations of the three label founders, sevensol & map.ache (aka manamana) and bender, encapsulating an idiosyncratic, modern house sound that demands an emotional response. the compilation comes rounded off by a booklet of photographs from ria aka lux which just like the music captures some of the beautiful ‘good times’ from this very special period, this time on paper.

22 digit ltd is the vinyl only off shot of uk based 22 digit records, and this new release is upfront house music in the style of artists like mr. g. this 22 digit ltd release is a collaboration between uk stalwart moodymanc and label boss william welt with solo remixes from appleblim and alland byallo. moodymanc also known to many as dubble d, is a manchester based artist who boasts seminal releases on labels including tsuba, local talk and 20/20 vision among many others of a similar calibre. william welt is a young artist who now based in manchester, cut his teeth in newcastle upon tyne, and has releases on labels including traum and construct. the first of the remixes comes from appleblim, whose bass heavy sound has been a regular feature of imprints inclouding r&s records, aus music, tempa and skull disco. second of the remixes comes from alland byallo, who has previously released on labels including third ear, get physical, poker flat, moodmusic, dirt crew and rawax.

as a polychrome composer, laurent perrier is developing his work through a large number of projects which, although they often share many common points, are all built on a strong identity. thus, zonk t has always been a way of exploring the most ambient fringes of dub, and the transition from the all-digital to compositions made entirely on modular synthesizers has overall not changed its approach in depth. yet, banburismus, whose unlikely title comes from the crypto-analytical process developed by alan turing during the second world war, begins by taking us by surprise with a long luminescent drone that seems to rise endlessly before dissolving little by little in a wall of echoes, glitches and distorted voices then make way to round and deep basses disturbed by metal peaks on which float distant blips, like farway echoes of the secret messages decoded by turing. real master stroke, this track occupying the first face of the lp is a trip in an ether much more populated than it seems. shorter, the three pieces of the b side participate in the same atmosphere, but still extend the sonic field. more stripped, more airy, more cosmic, banburismus achieves there new heights with ease. we could be tempted to play the game of references and try to put zonk t somewhere amongst the great experimenters of electronic dub. but who cares,, banburismus is well beyond categories, and laurent perrier, by cracking the code, opens for us the doors of a universe of disturbing and fascinating vastness.

nat wendell launches the depth of my soul label with a confident slab of deepness that should draw plenty of heat on the peaks and troughs of the house music landscape. -the way- is a crisply produced pumper, revolving around a seductive little lead line and the haunting titular vocal hook - there s a whiff of tech in the make up of the track, but the groove is all house. -theoretics- follows down a similar path, keeping things moody and mechanical without disposing of the funk, and then it s down to -release your soul- to bring a little light into proceedings with some mellow keys and dubby flourishes.

parisian veteran dj deep and romain poncet (well known for his traumer allias) released their first sergie rezza album on desire records in 2015, the album received heavy support from dixon, laurent garnier, hunee, antal to name a few. they now decided to start sergie rezza s own imprint. sergie rezzas sound is heavilly influenced by ambient, electronica, dub, jazz, industrial, funk, and also techno and house roots.

the finnish tropical troupe maajo is back with a two-track ep. in contrast to the afro-balearic sound of their 2016 debut tropic of tulli, the new defo / mansaba ep is a step in a deeper and sometimes darker direction. defo kicks off the ep with a driving 5/4 rhythm. reminiscent of mark ernestus’ ndagga sounds, it is a tribal tune with maajo’s signature ethereal disco elements. trevor deep jr.’s version straightens out the original’s unconventional time signature and focuses on a four-to-four beat and plenty of berliner dub. the remix is a solid dancefloor tool, traversing the original like a train making its way through a dark rainforest. the b-side is entirely covered by mansaba, a 14-minute long journey into inwards. this studio jam, recorded largely live, is a wild mixture of polyrhythmic sequences, krautrock guitar licks, equatorial forest percussion and violin synths. the trip starts slow and soothing, sneakily picks up pace and keeps grow and growing, eventually exploding into a full-on tribal dance.

following two previous appearances on the -contemporary dance- and -quiet eye- compilations the elusive lyubocha makes their first full ep release through black opal. -noblask- opens proceedings and instantly energises with a bass heavy acid jam, sitting on a simple motif and crunching away into the dance.-berzerk- pushes with a slow burning, deep and dubby tech sliced open by red hot hats. -nenavist- proffers a floral counterpoint to the earlier acid, bejewelled back drops host a perfectly wonked 303 line popping off to the horizon. closing track -nikogda- rolls re-pitched kalimba/xylo styles into a ball and jacks it against the wall, hard. simplicity is a powerful tool when used correctly. lyubocha nails a warm, lo-fi techno minimalism on this debut release.

its taken almost 3 years to get the man like medlar back on delusions following his 2015 release with dan shake but finally its come together. that release, along with his regular output for wolf, riverette and for discos only has helped cement medlars reputation as one of the leading uk underground house producers and led to official remixes and approved edits for legendary labels tk disco and west end no less! the medlar seal of quality has led to support from such influential heavyweight selectors as dj harvey, gilles peterson and dj koze. kicking things off we see medlar in straight up dance floor mode on title track nrg, coming through with a drum-heavy workout that utilises a gnarly bassline, echoing synth stabs and rasping hats to excellent effect. flip over for his own dub version which strips things back further placing all the emphasis on the bassline and going heavy on the space echo for a tripped out, dubby warehouse vibe tailor made for the freaky hours. closing the ep we have the aptly named tripped which drops the bpm’s for a low-slung mood-setter to warm up the floors with. a simple groove lays the foundation for a rolling bassline while chiming synths weave in and out of the spacious mix.

american producer dustin zahn readies the next release on rekids special projects this april with four vigorous cuts entitled take the throne. dustin zahn has been flying the techno flag for two decades, releasing on labels like rekids when not helming the berlin-based enemy records, a label which has released music from artists like fellow us techno stalwart ambivalent, arts boss emmanuel, and innervisions producer yotam avni. zahn is also respected for train wrecks, his weekly podcast series inviting members of the house and techno community to discuss a wide variety of music and industry related topics and stories. the release opens with the thumping kicks and sci-fi melodies of take the throne before rolling into the dubby tones, infectious claps and rattling white noise of decorum. the atmospheric nameless midnight then follows, packed with echoing synths, tantalising effects and a twisted vocal sample that weaves throughout, arriving at the final track subtle flex where escalating synths meet syncopated percussion.
