the aim of „métamorphose“ is to offer a voyage to the listener. the pieces really often start quite dark and then the mood turns into something intimate to catch the audience from the deeper spheres. sometimes it goes the other way as well: the track starts in a happy way and turns into a deeper vibe. by doing so the listener should notice his own feelings and try to completely let himself go. further he should be aware of his emotions: on the one hand the happy and melancholic and on the other hand the dark and rather monotonous side. in addition to the musical part to each track there is a specific artwork which was made while listening to the tracks and is based on the emotional expressions which were triggered by the sounds.

firstly, a huge thanks to everyone for supporting us so far - 2016 has seen the dext label continuing to go from strength to strength, with our callahan and mella dee ep s backed with remixes from hodge and endian which have been been super well received. now for the third ep of the year from our resident comedian bodyjack. bodyjack has been an integral part of dext since he remixed dubspeeka on our 2nd release and headlined our label takeover of privilege in ibiza last summer. we are very excited about his return to the label with this 3-tracker (and our first full solo artist ep!), and we think you re going to dig this... the title track cobra effect is one of those tracks you aren t going forget in a hurry. intense and brooding, we are hard-pushed to categorise this, but layers of sinister bass coupled with dark, driving snares and eerie synth work culminate masterfully, making this the perfect dext track. hydra effect lifts the vibe with a straight up peak-time house jam with a sting in the tail. a raw-but-infectious bassline winds along under bodyjack s signature killer drum programming, before blasting off with something you aren t going to expect. rounding the ep off is slowine effect: a proper dancehall workout (reminiscent of bodyjack s earlier work) and a real cross-genre party starter. the most upbeat of the 3 tracks, this again takes all the elements of what we love about the music from the past and cleverly works them into something special for the rave. and that s not all for bodyjack on dext this year - he will be back with a one-off ltd record called -hot shot-, backed with a very special remixer...but more on that soon!

rediscovered 80’s british acid house gem ‘cortina kidz’ recently made a serious impact on andy butler’s mr. intl with remixes from factory floor and juan maclean & tim sweeney. hot on the heels, moscow’s lipelis’ steps in to remix with striking results. pitchfork enthused of the recent reissue being “a chilly acid-house track operating the influence of both soft cell and the specials,’ xlr8r as “drenched in dark and sleazy overtones, the track encapsulates a downtrodden time in london”, while ransom note noted “cortina kidz is more than just an old skool oddity- it s a banger that s stood the test of time”. originally recorded on london’s stoke newington road in 1987, produced by a young tim brinkhurst ahead of his imminent record deal with virgin records with his band soho, and long before his current role as manager of mercury prize winners, young fathers, ‘cortina kidz’ remained undiscovered and the eccentric spoken word overlay and weird lead vocal made it very unlike the prevailing dance music sound of the time. leonid lipelis explains that “since it’s a reissue of a relatively unknown record it gave me a certain freedom of expression (when it’s something well known and classic you re likely to produce something more serious). i came up with more of a pop song, structured with a vocoder for the main version and had fun playing with vocal samples for the dub mix, paying homage to the 80s sound in both.- lipelis’ recent release on lies records has gained him support from four tet to dimitri from paris. he also runs a side project for hardware jams called tmo and co-runs low budget family records.

having been on something of a hiatus following the birth of his kids, milton jackson is back and in best form ever on songs without words. his most recent releases have been on uk label tsuba and is responsible for remixes for recloose on planet e, al kent, and m a n i k. kito jempere debuted on freerange in 2013 but quickly got soon after got snapped up for ep s on dirt crew, let s play house and most recently room with a view. he also owns and manegs the fata morgana label from his base in saint petersburg. pittsburgh track authority are the genre bending trio releasing some of the finest house and techno from the east coast of the us on their own label in the machine age as well as esteemed imprints such as azuri, argot and finale sessions. kuniyuki is something of a japanese enigma, staying resolutely below the radar despite being heralded by many (including derrick may) as a major inspiration. the multi-instrumentalist has collaborated with henrik schwarz, vakula, dj nature and jimpster and has released on mule and sound of speed and remixed dj sprinkles, joe clausell and ananda project.

crosses genre to find its own space, & soundscapes, downtempo, ambient, & house music all find a place. the record flows like a vague narrative, a non-specific sort-of passage, a meditative jazz-house trip.

that night, we answered a regular call, something about crazy loud noises coming out from a basement. while driving to the area all i could think when i first heard the bass stomping was: “man, whatever, this doesn t even sound like music to me.” and we were at least a 100 meter away from the source of the sound. when we got there, after knocking several times on the door, we decided we had more than enough probable causes to bust in. after a warning, we kicked the door open. what we saw inside was a five feet tall woman jumping around in that cacophony. we screamed and she ignored us, my colleague then panicked and shot her with his taser several times – she then simply pulled the probes out of her body shouting moments moments – and continued to jump around..

things are getting grim. the good guys and the bad are determined to settle their escalating dispute in the ring. after the bookies have taken their bets, the bad guys are taking the upper hand in the first few rounds. the nefarious comment about their beloved mother seems to have sparked uncontrollable rage in the pair. dont rule out the good guys just yet though, as they seem to be plotting something their opponents from the dark side wont see coming. for the second outing in the quartet series, french fry and parisian concrete resident s3a (sampling as a n art, faces) infuses the good guys with some positive energy.

forceful, industrial and acidic, kamera’s ‘consignia’, taken from his ep ‘ventoux’, arrives reworked by two producers each as uncompromising as the source material. truncate steps up to delivers a remix that further encapsulates his precise vision of deep, raw techno. choosing to boldly strip back the foundations of the original track, his powerful rework performs subtle but precise surgery, creating a tense masterpiece of sustain and release, enveloping the dancefloor in thunderous claps and jittering rave samples. meanwhile, the so far elusive yaleesa hall is tapped for an offbeat, dub version of consignia, twisting the track into something altogether darker and stranger. a muddied, dare we say filthy bassline supports a chaotic framework of unpredictable drum patterns and mechanized noise, while still maintaining a hallucinogenic groove as the track’s original elements gasp for air underneath.

all good things take time, aussteiger said once. and indeed, it took a serious amount of time to get everything set for what soon will be known as dub disco s first release! we’ve been digging deep inside his tune collection. not only to make sure that the first three-tracker is a belter, but that it also showcases exactly the kind of musical approach we wanted as our personal imprint: to hell with a boring and homogeneous release that only represents one genre! we were looking for something that stands for itself, something that tells a story, something that is representative for what the artist stands for in a musical sense. and after a tedious quest, we carefully curated something we think is dope! kicking off the number one is a track disclosing the joint forces of berlin-based collective of musicians los wawis and aussteiger s capabilities as a remixer. here appears a psychedelic version of the track, which is carried by gentle guitars, a dubby bassline as well as the funky-trippy synthesizers that usher a tropical vibe onto the dancefloors. the starter on the flip is entitled “heimat” and comes around as a melancholic interpretation of aussteiger’s time in exile, a period that enabled him to craft his very own style. there is not much to say about this bomb that the ear doesn t catch instantly: this one is an honest earworm, with it s irresistibly arranged horns and a pervasive and driving bassline. to finish everything off, we went for a nasty banger, that carefully blends different aspects of the raving side of dance music. the electrifying broken beat and it’s haunting bassline are blended with an intense influence of acid.

restored and re-mastered from the original tapes comes gigi masins much sought after first album wind. never commercially released the lp was in fact only given away at a number of small concerts, with many of the remaining copies destroyed during floods in the venice based musicians house. quickly becoming seen as something of a landmark ambient album in recent years, ‘wind is now lovingly presented again in its entirety. true to its original private issue it is once again being made available through gigi masins very own the bear on the moon records.

the hidden meaning of number 13 is change, the death of something and its rebirth. this is the idea behind gabriel dor & bordoys new album 13, which is meant to be a turning point on their career. influenced by old school techno but also by modern sounds, after 6 years of production partnership, theyve decided to release their first entirely unpublished lp. the album, made out of 13 cuts, starts with a dark intro that paves the way into a forceful kind of techno, followed by vintage sounds with gloomy touches and sometimes even emotional ones. they have used many instruments and samples discovered along the way on this composition process, plus lots of others found in the previous years. the sounds put together on this album have been carefully picked to preserve their uniqueness, while trying to walk on a different path.

“ode to eskapism” is dedicated to all of those that use techno as a way in to escapism. to those that use techno as a mental diversion from the perceived unpleasant, boring, arduous, scary, or banal aspects of daily life. those that cannot subsist on the scanty satisfaction they can extort from reality alone. those that feel the need to dissociate from reality in order to experience it. to all of those that emerges recreated, stronger and full of life after a weekend escape into techno. the label bond is the brainchild of swedish techno dj and producer petter b. the concept of the label is “music by djs for djs”. the label focuses on releasing tracks that enable the dj, rather than the producer, to be creative. it is based on that special bond which is created every time a dj combines tracks, loops and sounds live into something new and unique.

not too long ago a jiffy bag arrived at parkwest hq. in it was a scratched tdk case with a sa-x tape containing a musical message from years past, simply marked the tape i lost! we sat and listened, able to pinpoint influence and reference but yet hearing something totally new. that this tape surfaced and made it across the years and the miles to us was fortunate. when the synth part came through clear on a later version on the tape, allowing us to remix then it became destiny. emotion, melody and rhythm will always be timeless and these tracks, selected from that tape, are as relevant today as they ever were.

over the course of four albums, manchester based trumpeter, composer, arranger and band-leader matthew halsall has carved out a niche for himself on the uk music scene as one of it s brightest talents. his languid, soulful music has won friends from jamie cullum and gilles peterson to jazz fm and mojo as well as an ever-growing international following. his label gondwana records is home to gogo penguin and his own albums have found halsall exploring the modal jazz of john and alice coltrane, paying tribute to the hard bop of the late ’50s and early ’60s or most recently on fletcher moss park drawing on eastern influences in his most personal statement yet. his latest album when the world was one is something of a companion piece to fletcher moss park (much of the music was written at the same time) but draws more explicitly on halsall’s love of spiritual jazz and eastern music as well as his own studies in meditation and travels in japan. beautifully recorded at hasall’s favourite studio, 80 hertz in manchester, and engineered by brendan williams and george atkins it features the recording debut of halsall’s large ensemble, the gondwana orchestra, which utilises the exotic flavours of harp, koto and bansuri flute and eastern scales to create a global palate for halsall’s life-affirming sounds.

2016 is shaping to be a fantastic year for rebirth records, the 10th year anniversary and the 100th release…to celebrate this special date the label owner shield and his right arm robytek get in the studio to collaborate with two of the most innovative figures of the end of 70s / early 80s. the a side is the the pyramids with isabelle antena, french singer and songwriter, founding member of electro-samba pioneers antena. in the 1990s she also led another group, the powaga sisters, for three albums between until 2004. alongside these projects she maintained a solo music career, selling over a million albums and earning musical acclaim across the globe. from camino del sol (1982) to bossa super nova (2010), her cool latin, bossa, jazz and funk vibes have delighted ears and feet worldwide. the pyramids is something really special, a cosmic and balearic song with a timeless meaning, with the collaboration of martin ditcham (sade s percussionist) for the drum and paolo mantini, a real italian talent, for the bass and chords. the aa side is now, a collaboration with salvatore principato (sal p.) and dennis young, known as the vocalist and marimba/percussionist of (for the legendary early 80 s nyc band liquid liquid) seminal nyc minimalist-funk band liquid liquid. the experimental sounding band emerged from new york city s vibrant downtown scene in 1981, developing their own unique sound which they called big beat, a fusion of irresistible basslines, junkyard percussion and urgent, free-flowing lyrics. the group s successes included club hits such as cavern (sampled by grandmaster flash in the making of white lines), bellhead and optimo in addition to sold-out concerts worldwide. sal p and dennis still explore today new ways of writing & performing music. now is the experimental way to combine the live drums played by snacks (the berlin based duo rene corbett & aljoscha babel), with the electronic world and the unique musical textures from sal p and dennis young.

this compilation should enrich everybody’s soul with a mix of something for everyone who likes or wants to explore the variety of early soul tracks which are finding new favour on today’s uk soul scene. from the lesser known tracks from big name artists like aretha franklin, otis redding, gladys knight and the drifters, to established hits from the valentinos, sam cooke, steve alaimo, chuck jackson and timi yuro.

after a five year absence the illusive cottam label returns. since the original series paul has travelled the world djing, released on labels such as aus & versatile and started his own imprint ruff draft for his own original productions and tracks from other producers. currently taking a break from djing & concentrating on production it felt like the right time to reactivate the label that started it all with some new under-the-counter specials. first up we have ‘mixing tool’, a heavy beat and percussion setting the dark & foreboding tone, the unease increasing like something is creeping up behind you until the distant war cries reveal themselves - a deep track that is much more than the title suggests. next up, the long awaited vinyl release for the cottam re-wiring of a classic film title track, mixing the best elements of the originals synth score with a club ready beat and acid that adds to the original - this is one of the finest carpenter reworks you ll hear.

london based punk duo black volume are not easy to classify. their delirious industrial post punk sounds at times like proto house and at times becomes some sort of mutant electro. their b series sound is made of a conglomerate of filthy percussions, unexpected samples and something with the appearance of melody, with a weirdly addictive result. black rubber is james brown wearing black leather at 40ºc (in the shade) while suffering a mental breakdown. excentric melodies sliding down rhythmic dislexia. negative return blooms from an improvised beat with no traceable sequence, on top of which we find rubbery synth lines, creamy interferences and mysterious sampling, everything sounds like melting from old vhs footage with the future we enter a romantic dystopia. sensual and passionate but equally crunchy, it rises up through cheap calculator arpeggios, pitched vocals and obsessive bass lines. streetfight evoques a desolate landscape, devastated and radioactive. distant echoes from an extinguished human race that left behind only majestic rusty ruins.

we are really proud and honored to present espectrum, a year-long effort to put together a compilation of the best dub techno. the idea was simple, but ambitious: ask some of our favorite artists for one track to epitomize dub techno—the style of music we’ve loved and continued to develop since our birth as producers and a label. with a very precise idea of what we wanted to collect, the compilation was carefully built with hypnotic, obscure, dense, and magical sounds with an eternal hook. these are the kind of tracks that will never lose their appeal, because they go above and beyond labels, styles, and trends, resisting the passage of time. after the first tracks starting coming in, the idea grew more and more special, and the concept even stronger. we knew we were onto something really big. and, finally, here it is.

british producer reformed society is on a steadfast mission to dig deeper by going against the grain, standing up to the status quo and daring to do something different. a self proclaimed goal that is easily noticeable in his first release for “made of concrete”, wherein he reveals three original tracks and a remix by gathaspar, one of the label’s regulars. kicking things off with “high tension”, a high strung stripped back piece with an aerial feel, the artist builds up the entire mood of the ep from scratch. a clear-cut, steady groove whose versatility makes it relevant as an intro, outro or interlude. gathaspar’s rausch remix is a sub-bassy reinterpretation of the initial piece, filled with contorted whirs and whizzes that give the track a sub- aquatic feel. on “volgende halte”, the opening vocal sample shifts from a seemingly conventional soundbite to a recurringly haunting snippet that remains etched into the listener’s brain. rhythmical rolling pads galvanize the groove, making for an eerie yet relaxed overall vibe. movement inducing from the get go, final offering “orbiting jupiter” centers around wavering bass leads, while playing on a blend of spacious synths and timbered percussion patterns.

bjarki is from iceland. born and raised. despite the fact that bjarki is known for making extremely powerful dancefloor tracks he doesnt seem to belong to any particular genre. something this triptych of lps demonstrate very well. his music is at times cinematic and theres a story behind each track. bjarkis music always has something to do with him personally, but hed rather the listener lose themselves in the music than pay much attention to the man behind them. either on a record or to one of his ever evolving live sets

as the climate cools down in australia, temperatures are rising in europe and one of italys finest selectors has taken charge of people must jams eighth record. deja vu is a ep that has been a long time in the making. the result, we hope you will agree has been worth the wait. the title track kicks the ep off with a killer funk groove that riccio works into something we think mark e would be happy with. dyson jam is an original cut that channels some of his inner moodymann vibes - heads down, lights down, fader up... for the b side we asked the incredible payfone (who has been racking up a solid string of releases on golf channel) to remix dyson jam and he has created a perfect contrasting remix to the rest of the tracks of the ep. a deep journey that takes the original into sub-dawn territory. 4am vibes! the final cut of the ep mystical stretcher, is a late night jazzy funk number. again a little mahogani inspired...

something special from camp critical as two of electronic music’s leading lights lock horns for a vs battle of epic proportions. taking the jungle fleck of “mind & spirit” from sam’s “wasted days” lp of last year and one of breakage’s most memorable cuts from way back when (2005), the results are as you’d expect from these two. utterly essential listening.

those familiar with the world of dub disco and modern balearica should know all about layne fox, a san francisco-based producer who has released some killer records over the last decade as part of noted collective 40 thieves. the bay area ensemble has been responsible for some killer records, including gems on rong music and leng, who released their expansive debut album the sky is yours back in 2014. now, fox has decided to go it alone for an outing on magic feet that marks his first solo outing since 2005 s move me under the tuffy alias. its something of a gem, too, effortlessly combining many of his familiar influences with nods towards druggy italo-disco and horizontal pop.

meshing together brass blasts with bumping house beats and techno dirge, 14 drops is an inspiring experiment in joining together the organic and the synthetic. it s easy to imagine -14 drops uniting a crowd with numinosity: its spiralling dance rhythms, thick swabs of sub, guitar twangs, and warped vocals congealing into something that s completely its own

novoline makes music with equipment that was manufactured in 1988 and 1989, controlled via midi by two atari sts. as a sequencer he is using an algorithmic composition program that is 25 years old. with this program he creates sequences that he modulates live by shifting numbers and settings while recording. the process is improvised and contains a good portion of randomly generated melodies and drums, carefully selected and combined by novoline. the result sounds a little like something between a dark 80’s sci-fi soundtrack and an endless marching new beat extended version.
