since 2015, james welshs contribution to phantasy as kamera has delivered a series of releases shrouded in mystery, injected with the personal energy of both a hardcore and club heritage. two eps, arc and ventoux, set a distinct tone, with the latter complimented by head-turning remixes from artists such as george fitzgerald, throwing snow, truncate and yaleesa hall. now, the key phantasy artist emerges from the shadows under his own name, in order to continue his uncompromising musical journey. returning with a new, two-track ep, standing/slip captures the finely tuned tension and euphoric release of welshs sound in arguably its strongest form to date, showcasing not only the dancefloor mettle firmly established under his prior alias, but a new sense of wistfulness that coaxes his typically outstanding machine work into altogether more reflective territory. standing throws listeners headlong into welshs formerly anonymous industrial complex, generating a churning, relentless rhythm offset with a dry female vocal that recalls the sardonic stance of vintage electroclash. following this, slip is an initially unexpectedly spectral diversion, transmitting a curious synth line into space, and receiving a choral, sombre frequency in return. without losing its emotive qualities, the track succumbs to a hailstorm of welsh’s sharp, potent drums, before collapsing in understated catharsis.

following two radical reinterpretations earlier this summer from truncate and yaleesa hall, which earned plays from roman flügel, laurent garnier and ben sims to dusky and huxley, kameras ventoux ep is further expanded with two remixes that tastefully expand the producers original vision of uncompromising body music. festival and club favourite george fitzgerald is on hand first, delivering a blistering remix of cosignia, one of his personal favourite club records in recent times. here, fitzgerald continues his masterful streak of production, knowingly blending the somewhat menacing machine throb of the original with a suspenseful bassline, eventually culminating in a heavenly, ethereal breakdown, one thats certain to leave bigger rooms in throes. meanwhile, throwing snows remix of title track ventoux deconstructs the bright, idm inspired anthem into something equally frenetic yet utterly different. punchy live drums begin to escalate over a deeply satisfying electronic snarl, recalling throwing snows noted fascination with post-rock, while maintaining the tempo with naturally evolving elements of industrial and ebm

forceful, industrial and acidic, kamera’s ‘consignia’, taken from his ep ‘ventoux’, arrives reworked by two producers each as uncompromising as the source material. truncate steps up to delivers a remix that further encapsulates his precise vision of deep, raw techno. choosing to boldly strip back the foundations of the original track, his powerful rework performs subtle but precise surgery, creating a tense masterpiece of sustain and release, enveloping the dancefloor in thunderous claps and jittering rave samples. meanwhile, the so far elusive yaleesa hall is tapped for an offbeat, dub version of consignia, twisting the track into something altogether darker and stranger. a muddied, dare we say filthy bassline supports a chaotic framework of unpredictable drum patterns and mechanized noise, while still maintaining a hallucinogenic groove as the track’s original elements gasp for air underneath.

arriving on phantasy in april 2015, arc is the debut ep from kamera, a singular new artist creating unique and vital electronic music within its own form and context. a four track introduction to an already expansive sound, arc relates as much to the boundary pushing experimentation of the likes of autechre or sabres of paradise as it does to any open minded, contemporary dancefloor.

sub concious was originally conceived as the exclusive track for erol alkans fabriclive 77 mix, which was released to major critical acclaim back in august. a highlight track within the mix, sub conscious has now been remixed by tin man and new phantasy signing kamera.

nagamatzu were the british duo of andrew lagowski (seti, legion, terror against terror) on synths, guitar, and programming and stephen jarvis (pure motorised instinct, terraform) on synths and bass. formed in 1982 after messing around with old tape machines and drum boxes, making numerous contributions to international compilations and erratically releasing their own cassettes. their name comes from a character in jg ballard‘s “atrocity exhibition” and their music reflects his influence. nagamatzu self-released their debut cassette “shatter days” in 1983 after messing around with old tape machines, drum boxes and effects.

the sound of young dÜsseldorf. in the last three years, lucas croon, nikolai szymanski and martin sonnensberger have created a cosmos of driving bass lines, danceable rhythms, floating pads and shimmering electric guitars. using repetitive lyrics with double meanings, analogue synths and icy cold clackering computers, stabil elite revive krautrock and the avant-garde moments of the german new wave.
