cia records is an imprint who has remained at the centre of drum & basses history, with esteemed producers total science creating it during the genre’s formative years in 1997. the forthcoming ep on cia, field’s ‘intention dub’, highlights the eclectic mix of artists who have joined the roster since its first release. featuring a variety of collaborative producers, the six-track ep exemplifies the talented intricacies of fields and his masterful song compositions. the names that run alongside fields stand out within their own right, with underground stalwarts mako, and mcleod, roller top dog break, frequent partner villem (who go under their pseudonym mute) and forren, who also makes an appearance. as a collective, they represent many of the artists who helped cia build their impressive back catalogue.

seeking the overwhelming vibration of the genuine sound wave and its profound echo on the soul, kenneth james gibson has spent his career experimenting under a variety of aliases like as many brushstrokes to an ever polymorphic palette - successively releasing as apendics.shuffle, bell gardens, reverse commuter, dubloner, kenneth james g., kj gibbs, bal cath, eight frozen modules, and premature wig… the list is long. near to two years after his first incursion on kompakt with his third studio lp the evening falls , gibson returns with in the fields of nothing , his second full-length delivery for the cologne-based imprint.

e ruscha v, who has previously released on the label under the secret circuit moniker, comes back with his first full-length under his given name. ruscha describes who are you as spanning states “from calm to ecstatic but mostly in-between these.” this description points toward the liminal atmospherics of the music, which dispose of the many hallmark genre traces that informed secret circuit’s galactic journeying. for who are you, ruscha was content to wander more intimate environments, in search of an uncharted music rippling with humble discovery. the vinyl release includesd a download code.

d.ko records regular mad rey joins rekids with a pair of deep house cuts this march. the parisian producer and red lebanese co-founder started releasing music as mad rey in 2014, providing d.ko records with their second release (having already contributed to the d.ko01 various artists ep under his real name quentin leroy). he now joins rekids with a solid two track package initiating with in my house no6, a lively slice of house featuring funky bass licks and jazz influenced melodies complete with a compelling groove. on the flip, lorage (dub) lorage (dub) slows down the tempo whilst exhibiting sampled strings, crunchy snares and twinkling effects.

for our second ep, we are shifting from manila, philippines, to our other home city, bangkok, the thai kingdom’s capital. hailing from here is dott, one of three founders of more rice, a truly home grown bangkok electronic producer, dj and the talent behind mah noi ep. dott already has a number of releases under his belt and is now a regular on the asian circuit, playing gigs around the region. at 26 years old this is quite impres- sive and we are very proud to be releasing his first pressed record under more rice.
mah noi ep embodies dott’s sound, which is deep, driven and moody, whilst keeping an organic twist throughout and clearly inspired by his home country, the key to setting the release apart and making it tasty for more rice. the careful and precise placement of vintage thai samples gives it that extra flavour and mystery that can engulf the listeners and dancers, whilst the remix by eric volta truly transports you to another dimension.

insolate, formally known as miss sunshine, is a true techno veteran with 20 years in the scene under her belt. with releases on dj deeps deeply rooted label and her very own out of place brand, insolate now moves on to proletarijat with a significant release in more than one way. proletarijat 005 is wholly dedicated to her grandfather who was a yugoslav partisan during wwii.

the next collaborative release between freeride millenium and pauls musique is a terrific two-tracker from manchester artist joseph louis harland manning under his new alias los angeles with the 7? vinyl release artwork designed by daniel rajcsanyi as part of his ‘baby exhibition in austria. joseph louis harland manning was the drummer of the band wu lyf and is involved in projects like los porcos, the mancunian boyband menage a trois and dream lovers. under his other aliases he released on aficionado, cracki, ocean records and is it balearic? sub label u?ber as well as having made music videos for molly nilsson. here he is fine form across a pair of delicate and moving synth tracks. opener ‘lamour is a gentle cut that starts with celestial chords and wide-open expanses of synth before a buried deep groove slowly comes to the fore. breathy vocals also add to the loved-up, dreamy feel and the whole thing carries you away in a majestic reverie that shifts from ambience to new age house. the track features the artists own field recordings from the streets of berlin, twisting up sounds from the sidewalk into percussive notes that give an organic feel. the perfectly soothing second offering is ‘i wanna go to heaven is a gorgeous synth piece that suspends you in a crystal clear blue sky on a warm summers day. chords are smeared and stretched whilst angelic, wordless vocals drift by. it is the sound of a blissful passage to the afterlife and will leave you feeling cleansed.

the ecstatic sounds of a fruit machine spewing out winnings or a computer game bleeping a player upwards to the next level chirp and bleep all over ‘true beauty (and other things), a jubilant and chaotic tape from philadelphia’s nah aka michul kuun. his first release under new alias michul kuun, the seven track album lurches between church bells, angsty video game chimes and battered drums (kunn pummelled drums in punk band 1994! in the past). there are flashes of mutated house and techno (“threes, threes, threes” and “written house”) as panicky, stammery rhythm structures are built up, battered down then kicked around. “taking station” seems like it’s going to be the most mellow, almost melodic jam, then rounds off with a solid minute of air horn, before exiting on what sounds like a motorbike through a swooshing traffic for jittery finisher, “follow thruu”. - claire sawers, for wire magazine

copenhagen s tartelet is returning to their roots with a dancefloor-focused ep, pizza trance, from dirk 81—a.k.a label head emil m. nyholm. having previously dropped a slew of tracks as muff deep and ctepeo 57 (with max graef), the dj and producer is blessing the universe with three cuts of dancefloor heaven under a new moniker lifted from his days tagging concrete walls in the 90s. influences draw everywhere from disco, to african hi-life, dub, underworld, a few old trance records, and timeless house music.

recorded over a year in berlin and copenhagen, the record kicks off with -m.f.c-, a disco-afro-house hybrid oozing with roland jupiter 6 keys and some funky drums processed on old equipment from the former ussr. the b-side spreads things deep and delicious with -pizza trance (main mix),- a euphoric serving of sounds that substitutes pepperonis and pineapples for glittering sequencers and a bangin bass drum.

the ep s closer tastes like a bit of both, mixing up some more acid sounds into the recipe for a retro-sounding house track. it s another tasty delight from the label that will fulfil any and all late-night cravings, especially if you fiend for neapolitan pizza.. leave room for seconds.

long-term soma collaborator tony scott drops his debut album with the label under his edit select alias, the perfectly crafted experience, “cyclical undulations”. having released with soma under his percy x moniker for years and having countless hits under his belt, scott reinvented himself as edit select. known for his dark, expressive and expansive music, edit select has become once of the most well respected and renowned artists in the genre. with this latest full length, he continues to explore the furthest reaches of the deep techno spectrum.

frame of mind is back with a re-issue of another unknown gem from the early 90 s. uk production team dave campbell and viv beeton are most known for their uk techno, rave and bleep classics as ubik. it is under the alias of timenet they released an obscure white label in limited quantities in 1992. this untitled and one-off 3-tracker remained fairly unknown up until today. it shows quite a different side of their stunning production talents. dishwasher is a rough drum machine work out topped with a wild bleepy sh101 synthline a la mr fingers. dx moods is a spaced out techno tune combining mysterious pads and crazy dx-100 programming. with on the move the uk pioneers come closest to their ubik sound: mad uk techno with a hint of rave. a previously unreleased and stripped down version of this track is included as well.

this sought-after rarity presents a blend of ambient, new-age, 60s inspired folk music. the melancholic lyrics of singer-songwriter suzanne menzel are transformed by danish new-age pioneer, klaus schonnings, futuristic soundscape. schonning, not only produced goodbyes and beginnings, menzel also credits him as giving her the artistic courage to self-release her first and only album. goodbyes and beginnings sits at the cross-section of many genres. menzels voice is as timeless as her heartfelt, somber lyrics. while schonnings synthesizer, organ and rhythm computers offer a playful contrast. the beautiful tension between them creates a fresh, unique sound and makes goodbyes and beginnings hard to categorize even today.

about this release *first 10 tracks only come with the limited edition. nijmegen s eshu welcomes co-founder ivano tetelepta for his first solo release on the label. it is also the imprint s first full length, but tetelepta s second album after the hypnotic drum workout that was true colours, his debut on fear of flying in 2012. it comes as a double vinyl release with the first disc being limited, and finds the producer casting himself free from the dance floor and serving up a beautifully atmospheric soundtrack that would be a perfect companion for a nature documentary. when making eps and 12 s, tetelepta s smooth and infectious drums are always front and centre in his work, whether solo or as producing with label mates under the eshu alias.

finnish visual artist and filmmaker hannu karjalainen s music draws inspiration from ambient, drone, modern classical and dream pop. his first album worms in my piano was released in 2007 on osaka records and the second album, hintergarten in 2009 on simon scott s kesh recordings. a handful of dust is a desert, his third album – and the first under his full given name - arrives after a prolonged break.

calling in the favors: marcel dettmann, roman flügel and scuba under his scb inversion disguise, take apart songs and tracks from tuff city kids debut album adoldesscent. dettmann, submisses to his new wave and em callings, keeps the song that is scared intact, but mangles it into a fast-paced pogo piece, while flügel uses his second take of rmancer (see the happy gerdy remix for reference) to push it into the k-lauer abyss, before scb inversion tones down the rockism of nordo and makes it inherently his own. to complete the picture, you get thorarium by tck themselves. a previously unreleased track that is basically a remix of a previously unreleased track

this is the first vinyl release for genau recordings, a brand new independent techno label born in torino (italy) from the unfamous genau party series. four pure techno tracks signed under the collective artist name genau that put together the experiences of two local artists as gandalf and kessa and the already well known (production wise) duo noizyknobs (also active with their new project exilles). this ep is the result of one year of intense work from these four artists and it s the perfect synthesis of their ways to see techno music.the ep opens with pac-man, a dancefloor killer featuring a strong acid bassline and a paranoid modular synth on it. -genesi is the deepest of all tracks, and it s one of the first productions ever recorded by the genau team. side b features pressing plant, another dancefloor oriented techno track with a solid drums section and a driving bassline, while dont speak is a minimalistic bass orented dark tunnel.

lp maxime daoud, a much sought after musician accompanying forever pavot and his brother adrien soleiman, has released under the alias ojard a first album of soft and delicate instrumental vignettes. if euphonie calls for cinematographic comparisons (vladimir cosma, basil kirchin), the minimalism of the arrangements, the simplicity of the melodies conjure up to erik saties furniture music and brian enos thinking music.

intergraded is a new label started by midland to focus on releasing music by new artists, whether unknown, emerging or established but working under a new name. the first release sees body in the thames, peach, jay and webstarr help inaugurate the label. the idea for the label came about after being sent unreleased music and ideas by a number of artists over the last year. as i plan to focus graded on my own midland solo work for the foreseeable future, and with regraded occupying a different aesthetic plane altogether, the logical step was to start a new label that could help introduce this music to a wider audience. harry agius aka midland

rebolledo’s you and your hippie friends imprint grows its groove footprint on international dance floors with the full-length debut of gÜero, the latest vinyl outing from the hippie dance sister label and also its first fully fledged album project. to attentive hippie friends, the artist name should ring a big, funky bell – one that sounds exactly like the cut “convertible ride” from the notorious “a very nice combinado volume uno” 12” release (yayhf 01). back then, our hero was travelling under the somewhat more convoluted “el güero fresa” monicker, but has since dropped some of those conceptual pounds in an effort to reach maximum sleekness. in the same vein, his debut album is a testament to ultimate funk-a-ficiency, digging deep into fizzy arpeggios and chunky basslines - and the occasional guitar cameo, giving tracks such as bubbling synth opener elektronique, the neon-lit night cruising, bouncing electro disco roller alto final or the programmatic space drifter just that little extra riff.

these things take time keep it close to home on their 3rd release to wax. the split ep with b. hayes and the enigmatic dj dre debuting what the flora sound truly means.
a1 leaves no further introduction with dance floor stomper with abnormal percussion that keeps it outside the box. following in the shared a side comes b. hayes’s wax debut with ‘inside the outside’ delivering wavey synth line splashing over a relentless electro pattern leaving just enough room for the bright, refreshing female vocal. dre’s ‘215’ kicks off the flip keeping the determined drum vibe present around smooth glittery 808 patterns.
‘flora’ closes out the ep with deep hearty kick blending truthfully under a kinky nonstop bassline moving through each threshold. true to tha philly sound, true to tha flora sound.

for our mythical number 13 were bringing back the spacey minimal to our catalog. com sin is cosmin trgs alter ego for the experimental, minimal project. although he is one of the grand figures of the techno scene, under his com sin alias he presents a different side of his musical inclination.

sole and epic 12 of orlando voorn under his defence moniker. this little (discogs.com) known ep focuses on the producer trancier side with a strong early 90s electronica / dream-like flavor. released in 1994, this reissue has been remastered by former dubplates and mastering engineer frederic stader for music matters mastering and cut at former deutsche grammophon studios emil berliner. how can it be better really?

pale blue, the duo of elizabeth wight and mike simonetti, released their debut album too much critical acclaim back in 2015. they come together once again with their latest ep you stopped dying due to drop on crosstown rebels in february. the you stopped dying ep takes influence from shoegaze groups like slowdive and my bloody valentine and moves it to the dance floor. the result is a strange hybrid that some have called technogaze. this would never work if liz wasnt such a strong vocalist. her amazing vocal range makes it easy. mike simonetti pale blue is a hypnotic affair, the driving bass sitting perfectly under wight’s powerful yet ethereal vocals. daughter of babylon takes the record into heavier techno territory with its thudding bass and wights breathy vocals delicately layered over the top. on the flip side love is an unapologetically industrial number with screeching synths that echo around wights vocals. simonetti and wight have each earned their musical stripes in their own rights. simonetti founded the hugely popular italians do it better as well as his own successful record label, 2mr. he’s released a slew of records on highly regarded imprints such as me me me, correspondant and public release, and enjoys a fruitful career as a touring dj, which shows no sign of abating. wight has previously lent her exhilarating vocals to the west coast band, silver hands of which she was once one half

‘that jazz’ is coops first official offering since signing to high focus records back in october. by no means a debut, having already released two critically acclaimed albums ‘lost soul’ & ‘god complex’ under his own steam in 2014 and 2016, the london mc is putting his best foot forward - a no nonsense masterclass in smooth rhyming and soulful boom bap, produced by long time collaborator talos. the beginning in a long line of releases planned for coops this year, ‘that jazz’ serves as the perfect introduction. limited edition of 300 numbered copies on 7 inch vinyl.

the was/is crew have proven themselves to be dab hands at burrowing away at the hidden folds of the 90s electro scene and finding some truly unsung heroes worth of a reissue. following on from excellent work supporting the likes of archetype, the us label can now be found shining a spotlight on the work of can oral under the 4e moniker. originally appearing on labels such as force inc and mille plateaux, 4e s sound was quintessentially mid-90s, but only surfaced over a short period of time between 1994 and 1998. this record originally came out on sockett in 1996, and it s been sought after as avid diggers pull out every thread of dope, adventurous electro they can find. discogs pirates laugh no more, because now this essential record is back in the hands of the real music fans!

the people at antinote are always excited to introduce new names to its roster and sign libra, its latest addition, makes no exception to the rule. released under the moniker sign libra, closer to the equator is the work of latvian artist and composer agata melnikova. composed for a contemporary ballet at latvian national opera in riga, the music on this record strongly relies on melnikovas appreciation of bbc-produced nature documentaries. projecting the life of each creature that inhabits the british tv-program into her very personal and highly synthetized world, sign libra lends these microscopic beings her own voice. each song works like a musical tableau in which the main protagonists plants and animals come on stage to play their part in a ballet carefully choreographed by the latvian artist.

after being named the ‘best breakthrough label’ of 2017 by dj mag and following on from the ‘techno disco tools ep’, warehouse music launches into 2018 presenting a three track ep, this time under aitchison’s given name ‘ryan aitchison’. this new project gives the more experimental, darker sounds he is producing an identity.
