alix perez and spectrasoul have earned their stripes as pioneers of the deeper and more melodic side of the genre. these gentlemen are known for their versatility, and their progressive attitudes toward music. both acts came up through shogun, and their first collaboration forsaken quickly became a benchmark for quality in drum and bass. the synergy ep is 4 tracks of concise, stripped back, mature and soulful music that bumps. perez and spectrasoul have recently formed their own imprints, and as a celebration of this, the synergy ep is a joint release between the artists labels - ish chat music (spectrasoul), and 1985 music (alix perez). the ep has seen repeated support from dbridge, skeptical, lsb, lenzman, marky, ivy lab and others.

‘in time’ is the new album from renegade roots and reggae producer wrongtom and hackney’s veteran breakbeat/jungle mc’s the ragga twins. ‘in time’ strips back the jungle, d&b, garage sound that the ragga twins are recognised for pioneering today, to take you back to the ‘80s reggae and dancehall landscape where they started out. throughout the record, the ragga twins recall and explore a 30-year-long journey, where they uncover prescient lyrics and stories of their youth. wrongtom provides the beats and riddims as a perfect setting for this celebration of the dancehall and reggae scene.

with additional successes under such labels as taub, latence releases once again on play label records for his fresh superheated ep. collaborating ideas from his teen years in belgium through the 90’s, with more progressive inspirations, latence has materialized a unique style, which is a celebration of timeless dance music and it’s continued influences on forward-thinking artists. kicking things off with his title-track, pablo flaunts a subtle build of off beat chords injected around playful and erratic acid house influences. a busy and varied concoction of sounds topped with provocative whispers. deeper amplitude is the second of this four track ep, and as the name suggests, we are provided with ample bass, accompanied by snippets of melodic discord and a boisterous snare, fearless and rhythmic. metastable lays a minimalist percussive foundation, sporting a retro 70s synth that steals focus with its quirky pitch shifts, a classic example of latence’s immense talent for blending influences across eras. latence closes with acido basic, an eccentric finale to this eclectic ep. using exotic vocal sampling centered around chemical compounds, he simplifies his percussive layers to a clean texture, which form the bedrock for his experimentations.

after the successful calypso roses far from home album, because music will release a two remixes ep for the record store day. those remixes are made by the south african mo laudi. his work is considered to be in the vein of jamie xx’s music. forget the thorns, because she has them, and without delay pick this (calypso) rose who, at 76 years old, looks fresher than ever. calypso rose was always a fighter and had to overcome hostility from her father, a baptist preacher thoroughly opposed to her pursuing a musical career. and she was sexually abused as a teenager, as she bravely confessed in calypso rose, lioness of the jungle, the 2009 documentary about her. a tireless worker, she composed almost 800 songs, starting at age 13, and spent 17 years singing on cruise ships for the new york-based company celebration at sea, before playing on the legendary stages of the apollo and madison square garden with two of the greatest calypsonians, lord kitchener and mighty sparrow. calypso rose is a fighter indeed: you dont survive cancer and two heart attacks without a solid dose of grinta.

cascades is the music collaboration between two montreal-based musicians, neo-classical pianist jean-michel blais, and genre-defying grammy award-nominated electronic producer mike silver (pka cfcf). building off their sold out performance during the globally-celebrated 2016 red bull music academy, cascades is a stunning 5-song, 30-minute meeting-of-minds that navigates the spaces between the artists’ respective crafts and tendencies toward playful minimalism. featuring new versions from the duo’s catalogues, a reworking of john cage’s “in a landscape”, and a brand new, classical-meets-trance original composition, “hypocrite”, cascades is a celebration of the traditional and experimental, dissolving the old into the new.

2022 black repress / green velvet makes his circus recordings debut with bigger than prince, his most talked about track in years!
bigger than prince was born out of a conversation between label boss yousef and green velvet when both played the indonesian leg of the annual circus tour. the idea of the chicago legend contributing a brand new track for the circus x // part 1 compilation was floated and soon he was joining nine other friends of circus who were all to feature in celebration of ten years of events.
*bigger than prince* is a classic green velvet vocal number and sharper and fresher than anything we have heard this summer. quirky and driving, its set to be one of the tracks of the season. to back the original, yousef has drafted in more friends of circus on remix duties, hot since 82 and the martinez brothers.

discodromos ever-essential cocktail d amore label launches into action once more with the ear candy of komodo in tow. magic hour manages to work classic piano house tropes into a suitably cosmic headspace that s loaded with reverb and all things trippy, but its relatively grounded compared to the exotic meditation that the backwoods manage to conjure up on their oriental dub of the track. lizard dance channels early trance vibes to great effect in a celebration of early 90s rave mysticism and then sand dunes offers up a bubbling, friendly twist on acid house. using familiar tropes but still maintaining originality, from start to finish this is a classically rooted record with something to say.

vactrol park is an honest outpouring of thematic obsession, a celebration of championed studio components and the mastery of their nuance, an avant garde collaboration between kyle martin (land of light, spectral empire) and guido zen (gamers in exile, brain machine). simply entitled i (the first of a 2 part series), this debut ep opens the door to a world of ebb and flow, layers of oscillation falling in and out of sync, keeping us on the brink of vertigo and, as cliché as it may sound, we find solace in its chaos. this homogeneous release plays with the notions of systems as beautifully symbolized mario hugo s capsule of cardiologyyet another visually arresting module in the esp institute catalogue. some music is made for drugs, some is made on drugs, these tracks simply are drugs.

having checked our records, its been a few years since the shelves at juno were graced with some music from the studio of italian dub techno exponent fabio scalabroni, so the arrival of a new 12inch brandishing his work is cause for celebration. the rohs! records label operated by belgium-dwelling compatriot andrea porcu is who we can thank for coaxing some new cuts out of scalabroni with the roots ep suggesting he s lost none of his production verve. root a will appeal to fans of the punchier tracks from the giegling discography whilst the b side track has a real slinky vibe to the groove that really gets in your head and stays there

the faze action brothers released their fifth studio album entitled body of one last year and to continue the celebration they have recruited some heavy weight talents to give their spin on three tracks from that album. first, the brothers take on the remix duties of magic touch, giving it a dub house reboot that could be the sound track to countless sunsets this summer. next up is a deft dub mix of the same track by maxidiscs cohort and globe trotting dj, dicky trisco. on the flip side we have the balearic powerhouse that is phil mison, remixing echoes of your mind into an electronic, down tempo feast with additional bass, guitar and keyboard played by the man himself. the final mix on this 12inch is provided by emotional response curator and head honcho stuart leath under his chuggy guise, delivering an organic dub mix of faze actions floating world
